Couriers and third parties were a common way for others to deliver requests for the aid of Basil of Baker Street, even courier pigeons occasionally dropped by, but the last delivery method was a little unorthodox. A seagull had turned up carrying a letter outside the Detective's door, but rather than hand the letter over right away he insisted that he was delivering some sort of portable shelter, or that the paper could be properly folded to serve as a boat or hat and all while using various gibberish words that the mouse could barely keep up with.
Eventually, after reluctantly humouring the seagull (Scuttle was his name apparently), Basil claimed the letter and was free to bring it inside to read. It was from the Pearl Kingdom, a coastal human city who required his aid in investigating a recent attempt on the life of their Princess. They'd heard of Basil through reputation and had asked for him to take the next ferry over to help, and he had to admire their intelligence in seeking him out for the task. Unfortunately Dawson was elsewhere and Gadget Hackwrench was busy on other matters so it would be just Toby accompanying him on this case, plus he was a little reluctant to climb into another home made aircraft just yet.
The village had the strong smell of salt water in the air as the detective disembarked the ferry, riding atop his faithful hound with his luggage. The cases contained a few extra items that might be useful if the investigation took him onto a ship or near the water where all kinds of elements could contaminate evidence. For now though the detective adjusted his hat and coat, hoping he'd make a good impression when meeting royalty. Surely they'd send some sort of envoy to escort him to the client.
Erik's castle was in uproar after the attempt on Ariel's life by an unknown assassin. Nobody saw him come and nobody saw him go but someone clearly tried to shoot her and just barely missed. Guards were stationed at every door and kept a close eye on Ariel, who was already terrified by this event. She was walking around in circles, keeping her bodyguards close in case the assassin should return. Few hours earlier, she had sent her servants to seek out any detectives available, who could help her bring the law-breaker to justice. She even sent Scuttle, who told her of a skillful detective he heard about, to request help from Basil. Hours went by and Ariel finally noticed a ferry docking and Scuttle flew to her window.
"Scuttle, am I glad to see you. Is this man on that ferry?" Ariel asked, worried but relieved.
"Yes...well, technically he's a mouse but I know what you mean" Scuttle replied. "He's here now, sweetie. You can send one of them wagons for him."
Ariel thought for a moment. "No. The assassin could still be around here. If I make his arrival official, he might attack him as well. I don't want to endanger him. You must fly him over here. In case he has any luggage he can't carry while on your back, I'll send for it."
"Be back in a tick, sweetie." Scuttle said and flew to the docks to explain the situation to Basil.

A short time later Basil was once again conversing with Scuttle by the waterfront.
"So if you'd like to hop on we can be there in no time."
"I'd....rather not if it's all the same." Flying anything that he didn't have control over was a sore point for Basil. "You see I have all this equipment I should stay with. Perhaps I should just follow you?"
"Suit yourself. Don't think I could have carried your dog in any case."
The detective mounted up and Toby followed the seagull at an eager pace, not fast enough to tire him out given that the lack of tall structures gave him an unobstructed view of the sky. Soon enough they were at the castle, Basil stepped down and strode up to the entrance confidently. The guards eyed him warily given their orders.
"Basil of Baker Street, detective and agent of the crown reporting for duty."
"You're the detective?"
"That would be correct."
"The London detective?"
"Baker Street in London. Yes."
"Is there....anyone else coming?"
"Just Toby here. I feel this conversation is going rather roundabout so perhaps I should just go inside and get to work?"
"Alright..."
Reluctantly the guard allowed Basil and Toby entrance to the castle. A long hallway was protected by yet more guards and members of the local constabulary or military. Whatever had happened had clearly shaken up those in charge enough to really pull out all the stops. Hopefully they hadn't trampled the scene of the crime too much and destroyed any lingering traces of evidence. Despite the usual apprehension over his size Basil was at a perfect level for detecting the signs that most humans would overlook.
Ariel stood in her bedroom. Her guards had advised her to keep away from the window, so she stood by her bed waiting for Scuttle to report and for Basil's arrival. This was not the human life she wanted at all, she was not only concerned for her life and Eric's safety but also anxiously wondered why anyone would want to kill her. She had no man for an enemy and had done nothing to deserve to be murdered.
As Scuttle arrived to inform Ariel of Basil's arrival at the castle, she heard a knock on her door.
"Your highness, Basil of Baker Street has arrived." The guard said through the door.
"Come on in." Ariel said, forgetting all formality and rushed to the door as it opened. "Welcome, Basil of Baker Street. Welcome to my castle." she continued, bending down and kissed Basil on his forehead.
"And who is your cute friend?" Ariel asked, smiling as Toby licked her cheek. Ariel reminded herself why Basil was there and that the assassin was still on the loose. "Anyway, make yourself at home. But if you don't mind, I would really like to get started as soon as possible." she continued.
Ariel went to the scene of the crime which was the main hall, with Basil standing on her shoulder. The guards were still stationed at every entrance and exits. She then showed him the staircase, the place where she was almost shot.
"Here it is. Few hours ago, I met with my advisers to discuss issues with the harbors when all of a sudden a person shoots at me" Ariel said, pointing at every directions and tried to be as detailed as possible, looking around worrying if the killer was still in the castle. "Thankfully, he missed me." she continued, pointing at the bullet hole on top of the railing.

Basil bowed in respect on seeing the Princess, momentarily taken aback with how friendly she was despite the grim circumstances. Toby maintained his usual hyperactive manner upon meeting new people however.
"Greetings your highness. Thank you for the kind welcome, though I wish it was under better circumstances. This is Toby, I thought his tracking abilities might prove useful at some point. Toby, please stop trying to bowl over the princess."
The detective was anxious to get to work, as was Ariel. He could tell that the attempt had rattled her more than she cared to admit. Perhaps not just for fear of her life but for the lives of her loved ones, the people of her kingdom and how it could affect the affairs of state. She graciously carried him into the grand hall to allow him to inspect the scene of the crime while describing the events leading up to the gunshot.
Basil dropped onto the rail and inspected the bullet hole, performing mental arithmetic to work out the trajectory and trace the shot back to its origin. The round would have to be extracted and inspected as well, Toby dropped one of Basil's cases onto the floor and flipped it back onto his nose before pulling himself up on his front paws to the mouse's level.
"Ah, thank you Toby." He retrieved a few tools from his case and worked on removing the bullet. "Hmm, musket ball. Slight salt water corrosion which could explain the miss. Perhaps you could tell me who was in attendance of these talks? Also who was aware of them and what your eventual decisions would have been regarding the harbours. Changes in policy could affect many factors and it isn't uncommon for murders to be plotted to prevent such change."
Cheap ammo kept near the sea. It certainly wasn't taken from the royal guard stockpiles, but surely closer to the docks or harbours. Perhaps someone was going to lose out on profits if shipping practises were more regulated, or if certain imports and exports were made illegal. More information was required of course.
Despite being uncomfortable knowing her life was in danger, Ariel tried to calm herself by retaining her positive attitude. She observed Basil's investigation with curiosity, with her other eye on the lookout for the windows and doors in concern.
"Oh, uh...the castle was quite crowded with guards and servants after the shot, though the only ones present in the grand hall, at least the ones I was aware of, were two of my advisers, four guards and an architect I hired for the new docks. As far as I know, those are the only ones who knew about this." Ariel recalled. "Should we have them questioned?"
Ariel thought about the detective's words and considered the possibility of this event taking place due to her new policies. If that was really the reason why someone would want her dead, she began to think inconveniently that she still had a lot to learn about how humans behave or that she may have been too quick to jump in conclusions.
"But I was told that the new harbour policies wouldn't interfere with people's lives!" Ariel continued, upset as she misinterpreted Basil's statement as an implication of her being naive. "In fact, they're meant to prevent smuggling and pollution. I'm only planning to reorganize the harbour and construct new docks. No one will be forced from their homes and no one will lose their jobs!!"
Ariel sat on the staircase and thought about the next move. She did consider informing the public of these plans of hers. Surely that would ensure people that this harbour decision wouldn't sabotage daily lives. However, at this point she was too concerned of eavesdroppers to reveal any further plans despite trusting Basil. Which made her regret for shouting at him.
Ariel sighed. "I-I'm sorry, Basil. I shouldn't have yelled." she said, shoving her face in her left palm in regret. "It's just that I've never really felt I wasn't safe in my own home and I don't even know how I can sleep at night while this criminal is on the loose."
Ariel tried to bring back her positive attitude and gave a faint smile. "Would you like to join me for dinner tonight?" she asked.

The list of people attending the meetings was large, as was the number of staff members going about their duties during the assassination attempt. The Princess seemed incensed at the idea that one of them could have been involved, not quite sure why the policies that would help her people would be met with hostility.
"I mean no offence your highness." Basil explained. "Though your policies benefit all of your people, both in regards to their livelihoods and their safety, there are those who would profit from smuggled goods or those who feel that taking steps to avoid pollution would cut into their business practises. Sadly while the well meaning heads of state act in the interests of their people there are those who feel their own riches or convenience trump the well being of the kingdom. Perhaps if you know of anyone who even slightly suggested amending your smuggling or clean harbour agendas it might narrow a list of suspects?"
Ariel apologised, citing her nerves after the attack had left her tense. Understandable given the events. As the mouse climbed down from the handrail Toby took charge of consoling the Princess, nudging her with his nose. Then there was a dinner invite. While a meal after the long journey was tempting, Basil considered first and foremost that he should secure her safety before going after the culprit.
"Dinner would be nice. I should track down the origin of this bullet afterwards however. Perhaps undercover work in the city. Thankfully I've packed a few disguise items."
Toby made a short 'wuff' noise, showing one of the larger cases on his harness. Easy for him to carry but a small wardrobe by the detective's standards.
Ariel recalled the meeting again. "Well..." she said, looking up while scratching her head. "The pollution ban was my idea...let's just say I have a lot of respect for the ocean. But I informed my confidant of this concept. We discussed this matter and came to the conclusion that new docks would also be required. So I told him to hire an architect. As for smuggling, that was my adviser's idea. Illegal wares were all over the kingdom so he suggested stricter laws on that matter."
Ariel grinned and stroked Toby's head as he attempted to console her. "Very well, dinner will be served in few hours and I'll reserve a spot for you in the dining hall. Though you must forgive me for not having chairs that match your size." she continued, smiling faintly.
"Disguise items?" she asked, worried. "Basil, if you need more clues I can place some of my guards under your command during the investigation but I don't know if masquerading as a commoner during these troubled times is a good idea. Besides, I feel safer with you around." the Princess continued, holding her mouse friend in her palm.
She sighed. "But if you believe this is for my safety, I suppose I should trust you. But let me at least go with you, disguised of course."

Unfortunately Ariel seemed to think the best of everyone, which didn't help narrow the suspect list any. Though the construction was another lead, a royal stipend for a new harbour would attract a lot of potential architects and losing out on it could result in any reaction from a humble acceptance, childish huff or attempt at violence. It seemed that tracking the ammunition was the best course of action.
"Oh, think nothing of it your highness. I don't think anyone plans for a mouse sized guest. Just be thankful it wasn't the other way around. You'd have quite the time getting into Baker Street.
The detective made a mental note to get in contact with Alice Liddell regarding that size changing mushroom. If indeed real it could solve a few hospitality issues.
"Yes, disguise. I'm thinking a grizzled man of the sea. Weathered traveller looking for a supply of ammunition to fight off piracy while in transit. Then perhaps I could find a list of other buyers. It's not uncommon for black marketeers dealing in weapons to keep a list of business partners in case they need to trade information in exchange for leniency. Honour amongst thieves only seems to apply half the time."
Ariel made her intention clear to come along on the undercover mission, citing both her concern for Basil and her faith that he was her best defence against further assassination attempts. It brought to mind a previous journey to the jungle isles, Basil had been investigating shipments of jewels used as magic components and had teamed up with Jane Porter. When he tried to dissuade her from accompanying him she stated quite firmly that she would hear none of his chauvinistic attempts at protecting her and that he had little way to stop her. Hopefully Ariel wouldn't overrule him as well.
"Quite out of the question. Undercover work is very risky and you'd be a lot safer with your royal guard looking out for you."
Toby looked back and forth between the detective and the princess, making small noises indicating his uncertainty about the ultimatum being enforcible. Basil tried to maintain a stoic and firm stance on the matter despite this. As a client he was obligated to maintain her safety if she stayed or followed but despite his intelligence he could hardly back up his demands.
"Basil, I'm not safe anywhere. Wherever I go, whether it be here or among my people, I'm still being hunted." Ariel said, determined. "For all we know, the killer may still be around here and I'm not willing to put my life in the hands of a royal guard, not until the assassin has been captured at least. Not to mention that I doubt any potential criminal would take a mouse seriously, disguised or not. No offence."
"I insist on coming with you." She continued. "I could disguise myself as a commoner and carry you on my shoulder. It would be easier for you move from places that way, after all, dogs are not allowed everywhere. Meanwhile, one of my servants could disguise herself as me and even sleep in my room for the night."
Ariel made herself clear in order to convince Basil that she needed to accompany him, believing it would not only help the detective but also mislead the assassin. Ariel was not a commoner and therefore the assassin would not be looking for one.
After few hours, dinner was finally served and while eating at the table, the princess and the detective discussed the next course of action.

Well, she certainly had no intention of staying at the palace during the investigation. At least she didn't take too much offence at the idea. Basil did not want a repeat of that tree swinging incident with Miss Porter (who he still considered to have chosen that unnerving method of travel as revenge). On the brighter side this case had little chance of a bipedal leopard trying to eat him. Even though he had no choice in regards to her company the detective resolved to at least maintain some control for her safety.
"Very well, but I'll be finalising your disguise and I'll expect you to stay out of any dangerous encounters rather than attempting to face them head on."
Hypocritical and unenforceable by all means, but the mouse needed to say it. Soon enough they were discussing the finer details of the plans over dinner. Basil was served a smaller helping on a full sized plate, though he'd planned ahead and brought his own utensils. Toby meanwhile was enjoying his own dinner from a bowl put out for him, looking like he would need a second or third helping to satisfy him given how quickly he was eating.
"The waterfront taverns will be a good bet. The bullet I recovered has some minor damage from sea salt suggesting it was stored close to the water so at the very least we could overhear, or ask about, the location of such caches or black marketeers. Hopefully from there we could trace the weapon, then the assassin, then any potential people who hired the assassin if he was working for a third party."
Ariel was glad that Basil respected her instincts, she gave him a gentle kiss on his tiny cheek. "Yes, I concur." she said. "If we run into trouble, the first thing we'll do is flee."
The two finished their meal. As the servants came to pick up the plates, the princess and the detective planned their next move. Meanwhile, Ariel got dressed in her commoner disguise. She wore a dusty brown dress, black boots and a hooded gray cloak.
"Hmm...am I a convincing commoner?" Ariel asked, putting on the cloak and hiding her hair in a hood but also allowed Basil to double-check if something needed to be added. She then noticed that it was about to rain for the night. "I...suppose I could carry you in my hood until we get to the waterfront." She said, believing it would be best if Basil stayed hidden inside her hair while on the mission, which would also shield him from the rain.
"I could help gather information once we're there." she continued. "Perhaps I could bribe some of the marketeers to reveal information about weapons dealing or any piece of information we could use. My instinct tells me that the assassin has friends in these areas."

After dinner Basil got to work on his own disguise while the Princess was retrieving hers. Given the waterfront location, large amount of various ships and possible piracy a variation on his sailor costume seemed to be the go to approach (thankfully without Ratigan around to see right through it this time). Heavy work boots, well worn trousers and jumper, matching coat and cap plus an eyepatch and light beard to mask his features.
"I dare say I'll fit right in Toby. Now how about you...." He turned to see the hound curled up in the corner sleeping off his meal. "...you, can catch up later I suppose."
Just then Ariel turned up with her own disguise, wisely keeping herself covered and hooded almost completely. She also offered to carry him around town, a welcome offer considering the rain had picked up and his usual transport was incapacitated after a dinner with a few extra courses. He'd surely track them down with his keen nose when he woke. Hopefully he hadn't put on so much weight that he'd arouse suspicion with his human back in London.
"A lift would be most welcome your highness. Shall we depart?"
The first stop was a shady looking tavern by the docks, a good place to start when looking for the local ne'er do wells. Lips were very loose when several servings of alcohol was involved, or someone had to brag about their criminal exploits to gain favour with their peers. Thankfully they didn't attract much attention on entry, rather than the standard quick looks of those that were afraid of trouble coming through the door.
Basil pointed out a table at the far wall that they could use, a good view of the tavern and their backs to the wall to prevent anyone sneaking up behind them. A barmaid brought the detective and the Princess a pair of pint glasses, though lord only knew what they were filled with since Basil's knowledge of beer couldn't account for the slight green tinge or the violent bubbling. To maintain appearances he pulled and appropriate sized mug from his coat and climbed his own glass to scoop out a drink, thankful that it didn't eat through the mug on contact.
"Cheers." Basil executed a fake sip, knocking the glass back but not swallowing any of the contents to keep sober. Then he leaned closer to his companion and got to scheming.
"Do you still have the musket ball? Play with it on the table, see if anyone notices."
Letting a little hint into the open was useful for startling the weakest of conspirators. Anyone linked with weapon dealing or the assassin might panic on seeing their ammunition again. Perhaps they'd rush out in a panic, or try to contact others, maybe attempt to steal or buy back the evidence. Then Ariel and Basil could follow them to the next link in the criminal chain. Bribery was an option too, but preferably a last resort given how some criminals would say anything for easy coin.
For now the detective pretended to enjoy his drink (even now one of the drips on the table seemed to be corroding the wood) and scanned the room for suspicious characters.
