Mittens padded down another dark, crooked alleyway. She had been thinking this a lot. Before, her family had moved away and left her outside to fend for herself. Then she had been adopted by Bolt's family and found a home… but now she was separated from them. This time (she hoped) that her family was missing her and looking for her.
Mittens didn't know where she was. A city full of shadows and strange smells and heavy, wet air. It was very different than New York. The Pigeons had a variety of colorful accents that Mittens found difficult to decipher. She doubted very much that she would be able to manipulate any of them in to getting food for her… she'd have to come up with something else.
It was late at night and the stars were out. She had been wandering from trash can to trash can, trying to get lucky. So far nothing filling.
Turning another corner, she carefully walked over the cobblestones, avoiding puddles, her head hanging, ears askew. Unexpectedly a shiver went down her spine and her hair stood on end. She fell still, peering around with wide green eyes. The alley was eerily silent and still.

The Shadow Man had been spending a great deal of time in Andalasia, but after everything that had happened with the ghosts and the Phantom Mansion, he decided that he wanted to go back to his shop, to see how things were doing, obviously. It wasn't because he missed New Orleans, not at all. He wasn't the sort of person that missed things.
Still, it was nice to be back in the Cresent City, he had to admit. He was used to the heat, to the humidity. Everywhere else was too cold, too dry; Facilier liked New Orleans. After all, he had spent ... pretty much his whole life here. And he had worked too hard for his shop to simply abandon it.
His shadow was behaving for the moment as he headed towards the shop, hoping that everything would be as he had left it. Facilier had to doubt that anyone would disturb his Emporium; it had an atmosphere about it that tended to send shivers up the spines of thieves, and he had done that very intentionally with the way he'd decorated. Also, it helped that the depictions of the different loa, if you were unfamiliar with them, tended to seem a bit ... spooky.
He moved quietly through the streets, and when he reached the turn for his own shop, he knew that there was someone or something already in the alley; his shadow had sensed it first.
Taking a deep breath, Facilier pulled his cane, ready to use it, should he needed. He rounded the corner, determined to defend what he'd worked so hard for.....and all he saw was a black and white cat.
His cane disappeared as though it had never been, and he smirked down at the creature. "Well, what's a pretty thing like you doin' all the way out here, sugar?" he asked, tilting his head at the animal. She was quite the pretty little cat, he had to admit. Facilier quite liked cats; he'd just never had the chance to own one, himself.
Mittens didn't have words to describe what she was sensing. The shadows were too dark here, the silence too deep. Then, she heard footsteps approaching. Crouching down, she pressed herself low to the ground, her ears pinned back, her eyes wide. Every hair on her body was standing up. Curling her tail tight to her body, she waited and watched, poised to run away if she was seen.
A human stepped around the corner, a cane in his fist, and Mittens knew she had to run-- but she felt frozen. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself to be hit when--
"Well, what's a pretty thing like you doin' all the way out here, sugar?"
Mittens slowly opened her eyes and looked up at the human. He was looking right at her. She didn't know anything about human clothes-- certainly not enough to judge Facilier's as odd or to recognize him as a Shadow Man. But his voice was gentle. His eyes seemed kind.
Mittens had, unfortunately, known more cruel humans than kind ones in her life. So even though Faciliar spoke softly to her, she hesitated. … but her empty stomach was gnawing inside her and… maybe this man would give her some food. It was too bad she didn't have Bolt around to charm dinner out of the human-- she'd have to try herself.
She slowly got to her paws and warily took few steps toward Faciliar, her nose twitching. He smelled like so many things she had forgotten and at the same time everything she didn't know. Looking up at him she gave a sad little meow.

Facilier could tell that the cat was nervous; it was plain in her body language and the way that she glanced at him. She wasn't sure about him yet, and he couldn't blame her. Most animals took a little bit of time to warm up to him, if they did at all. They tended to be able to sense that there was something ... unusual about him, and some just never got over that fact.
The cat got to her feet and took a few steps towards him, and he stayed very still, watching her. He heard the way that her stomach growled and he knew that she was hungry. Well, he wasn't about to let a poor little thing like this go without food.
The pathetic mew she let out decided him; he wasn't sure what, but he was going to feed her. And then, she could be on her way, as cats were wont to do. Still, she would have something to eat, first.
"Wait here, sugar," he murmured, slowly getting to his feet. "I'll find you something to eat." And get himself something, too. He had a few coins left; that would buy them some bread and perhaps some meat, and then he'd worry about tomorrow when it came.
Facilier went back out to the street and quickly found several street vendors. He bought a baguette and two turkey legs, which would do nicely. The Shadow Man carried his purchases back to his alley and headed into his Emporium. He set his own food down in the little kitchen in his meagre apartment quarters, getting a plate for the cat, as well.
He headed back outside, tearing strips of meat off the bone for the cat, and set the plate down. She was still nervous, and he knew she wouldn't come in just yet. But at least she'd have something to eat.
It was always risky to approach a human. You could never guess how they would respond. Begging Facilier for food had been more of a last resort than anything else. So when she looked up at him and meowed, she let herself hope one more time that he was one of the good ones.
I'll find you something to eat.
Mittens' black ears perked forward. Something to eat! The tall man ambled off and she heard him handling a few coins as he turned the corner. Mittens almost raced after him, worried that he would change his mind or forget her. Taking a deep breath, she sat and curled her long skinny tail around her paws, her eyes watching the street expectantly.
She didn't have to wait too long before he had returned with a few packages that smelled delicious. She gave another hopeful, happy meow when she saw him, only to completely deflate when he went inside. Padding up to the door, she tried to see underneath.
"Stupid. Stupid! Mittens, you never learn!"
Dejected, she sat and hung her head.
After a few moments she heard footsteps and scrambled out of the way just as Facilier returned with a plate in hand. He sat the plate down and Mittens looked down at it, her mouth hanging open in shock. He could have tossed the bone out to her, but he'd actually put the meat on a plate. She looked up at him and carefully padded forward. After one last look, as if not sure if this was a trick or not, she dove for the food and ate it hungrily, barely chewing it.
When it was gone and she'd had licked the last bit off the plate, Mittens sat back on her haunches and looked up at him. She sighed happily, her stomach full for the first time in days. "Too bad there aren't more people like you, mister."

The Shadow Man had always liked cats, and this one appeared to be no exception. Whether or not she would like him remained to be seen, however. When he'd come back with the food, she seemed to be quite pleased to see him, but it appeared as though she hadn't expected him to come back outside after he'd gone into his Emporium to set his own food down.
Clearly, this cat had a lot to learn about him. But considering they'd just met and he had left her alone several times to get her food, he couldn't say he blamed her for still being unsure of him.
Facilier sat down on the little stoop in front of his shop, hat perched jauntily on his head, just watching the cat as she ate. She had been hungrier than he'd thought; she had barely stopped to chew the meat at all. Which likely meant that the poor creature hadn't eaten for quite some time. Well, if she stuck around, Facilier would make sure to feed her, somehow.
Just as he was about to say so, though, the cat looked up at him and spoke. Facilier blinked once, then a bit of a smirk slipped onto his face.
"I know quite a few people who would disagree with you there, sugar," he replied, standing up once more. "And if you don't have a place to stay, you're welcome to stay with me. I might not have much, but I'm willing to share." With a cat, anyway. Not with most people, that much was certain.
While she ate the tall man sat down on the step and watched her eat. Mittens didn't mind the company. Whoever this guy was-- she was still very perplexed by all the scents that clung to him-- he was kind enough to feed a stray cat. He had seen her and chosen to help and as long as he didn't do anything to break her trust, Mittens would be comfortable having him nearby.
He spoke and Mittens paused from cleaning her face and rolled her eyes. "People don't know what's good for 'em."
Facilier was already standing and speaking again when realization dawned on the little black and white cat. She had spoken... and the human had replied! In her world, humans heard her speech as meows and a dog's speech as barks. They did not understand their language. But this guy... she was sure he had!
Mittens starred at him with wide eyes. "Do... do you speak Cat?"
Even now she felt ridiculous talking to a person this way. It had to be a coincidence. Or maybe her brain was playing tricks on her. Maybe this was a dream-- maybe she was really passed out under a dumpster somewhere.
Mittens was so caught up in this development that she didn't even realize the kind man had invited her to stay.

It was clear that the cat didn't realize that Facilier had responded to what she'd said for a moment. She continued cleaning her face as though nothing had happened, and then she froze, as though the realization had just dawned on her.
She asked if he spoke Cat and Facilier couldn't help but laugh, looking down at the little creature. He wasn't sure quite what was happening or how he was communicating with her, but he'd experienced things far stranger than talking to a cat in his life. It was best not to question these sorts of things.
"I speak many things," was what Facilier said by way of explanation. He didn't want to let her know that he didn't know why this was happening; she seemed to be all right with his presence and he didn't want to ruin that.
"Did you ever stop to consider that maybe you're speaking my language?" he added with a little smirk. He doubted that, considering he had heard her meow earlier, but well, anything was possible, especially these days.
The cat hadn't responded to his offer of letting her stay, but he figured that she might not have heard him, what with the surprise of the fact that he could understand her. He took a step towards the Emporium door, opened it, and turned back to the cat, head tilted slightly. "Do you have a place to stay, darlin'?" Facilier doubted it, but if she did, he didn't want to insult her.
