Peter Pan had lost Alice. He hadn’t FORGOTTEN about her, he’d just hadn’t remembered to remember her. Then, when he had remembered, he couldn’t find her. Things changed often on Rohandor and sometimes time and the stars did funny things. Sometimes Peter wondered if Alice was lost somewhere with Wendy too, the other person he couldn’t seem to find. How would he ever find them? Especially when Tinkerbell wasn’t there to help?
Then, one night, Peter flew past a HUGE clock and felt a little tickle in the back of his mind. This giant clock tower looked familiar. In fact he was sure he had been here before. He started flying low over rooftops, pausing to peek into a window now and then. He had just begun to wonder if he’d imagined it when he heard voices coming from a window below.
Peter snuck closer and peeked in. There was a woman in a dress with her hair all on top of her head and she was speaking to a blonde girl, telling her it was time for bed. Peter’s clever brown eyes squinted at the girl and when she spoke he knew for sure that it was Alice.
He was so excited he almost crowed, but just managed to duck out of sight as the older woman came to close the window. After a few more minutes the light was put out and Peter was left sitting on the roof in the darkness.
Peter waited for what he was sure was seventeen hours (but was in reality all of fifteen minutes) before going to the window and pushing it open. He couldn’t wait to tell Alice that she wasn’t lost anymore!
Once in her room, Peter paused to look around. He couldn’t help but compare this room to the nursery Wendy Darling had shared with her brothers. His first observation was to note that Wendy, Jon, and Michael had many more toys than Alice seemed to have.
It was at that moment that Dinah rubbed against Peter’s ankles. He had not expected a cat at all, and in the darkness hadn’t seen it approaching. Peter howled in alarm and pulled his dagger before jumping onto Alice’s bed, blade held high, ready to protect her from whatever thing had just grabbed him from under her bed!

Alice's days had been relatively peaceful for some time now (which was to say, not very interesting). Her sister had been keeping a close eye on her, leaving her with few opportunities for adventure. Sometimes she'd considered writing a letter to Basil, the mouse detective; or even trying to send one off to Arendelle, to see what exciting things might be happening in the life of its royal sisters.
There was one boy, however, who Alice truly hoped to see again (partly because she wasn't sure there was even a way to get a letter to him), and that was Peter Pan. He'd promised her such adventures, and even offered to protect her from the Queen of Hearts upon her return to Wonderland, but it had been some time since she'd seen him. She expected he was busy with some manner of exciting heroic boy escapades; she just wished she could hear the stories.
That night, however, as she settled into her bed upon her sister's exit, her thoughts were elsewhere. Mostly, she was wondering how birds knew where to go when they migrated. Did they have maps? Were birdsongs simply complicated sets of directions, the kind you'd give an out-of-towner looking for the library? Before she could come to any conclusions about the matter, her bedroom window swung open and a figure entered. At first, Alice couldn't make out who it was in the darkness- but as he jumped onto her bed with a shout of surprise, she caught the glint of a familiar dagger. "...Peter? Is that you?" she asked in her loudest whisper. If Peter hadn't woken her sister, she didn't want to make things worse. "What are you... doing?" She'd almost asked what he was doing here, but at this point she was more interested in why he was standing on her bed with a dagger.
When no under-the-bed-creature came out to get them, Peter slowly lowered his dagger. By then Alice had sat up in bed and whispered to him, asking what he was doing. Peter slowly sheathed his dagger, knelt on the mattress, and leaned over to reach under the bed. He hauled out Alice’s tiny red kitten and held it up in the dim light, glaring at it accusingly.
There was the sound of footsteps outside the door and Peter froze, cradling the cat to his chest. For a moment he and Alice sat in silence, waiting to see if her sister would open the door to investigate the sound. After a few tense moments, the footsteps moved on.
Peter heaved a relieved sigh and put the cat down. Then he turned to Alice and smiled brightly as if nothing at all was amiss.
“Alice! I found you!” He spoke in loud whispers too. The first time he’d met the Darling children their parents had been away at a party and Nana had been chained up outside. There had been no need to keep their voices down. Here it was quite a different thing, with grown ups in the house. That was one of the very-important-rules that Peter had to follow. He could not be seen by adults.
Peter sat with his legs folded up, his hands resting on his ankles, at the foot of her bed. He looked her over, noting that she now wore a night gown instead of the blue dress he’d first met her in.
He leaned forward a little, eager to ask a very important question. “Did you find the way back to Wonderland?”
Peter still wanted to go there and see the strange things Alice had described. He especially wanted to have a duel with the Queen of Hearts and chase her off for good. Pan had heard of many terrible adults, mostly pirates, but the Queen of Hearts was undoubtably one of the worst.

Alice smiled as Peter pulled Dinah from under the bed. For all his bravado, he was spooked by a kitten! She couldn't really fault him for it, though. The same thing had happened to her on occasion when it was dark; and for all she knew, they didn't have kittens in Neverland.
As the footsteps passed by the door, Alice was worried- she didn't know about Peter's particular rule, but just wasn't sure how exactly she'd explain the strange boy's presence to her sister. She hoped they would be able to meet sometime, but not tonight. So when the steps faded, she was just as relieved as Peter was.
"Yes, you did- and at home, too," Alice replied to Peter's excited whisper. She didn't remember telling him where she lived, so he must have figured it out some other way. Did he just fly by all the windows looking for her?
She drew herself up to a seated position in bed across from the boy as he asked about Wonderland. "I'm afraid not," she answered. "I haven't been able to look as much as I'd like. Sometimes, I nearly forget to think about it! But... now that you're here," she continues, starting to look more excited, "we might be able to start looking again, together." After all, he could fly, which was always a good thing to be able to do when you were looking for something.
If Alice had voiced her question to Peter— just how had he managed to find her anyway?— Peter would have shrugged his shoulders, told her it had been easy, and left it at that. It was an aspect of his magic, something deep inside him like a homing beacon, that led him to lost children. Not all lost children were literally lost or even orphans; some were sad or lonely or frightened. Some just needed a friend. Most importantly, the child had to believe in Peter Pan. This was not something Peter would have been able to explain very well. It would have been like trying to explain why flowers bloomed or water flowed down hill. They simply did and always had. What more explanation did you need?
Alice moved to sit facing him and admitted that she had not found her way to Wonderland. Peter frowned thoughtfully, nodding solemnly when she explained that sometimes she forgot to think about it. He looked back up at her when her tone changed with her excitement, and he felt a grin tug across his face.
“Well, sure!” Peter hopped off the bed and held out his hand to her. “Let’s go!”
Except, something seemed to occur to him then. His grin faded into a little frown and he crossed his arms, his brow furrowed. “But… where do we start looking…” He began to pace back and forth across her room. After a few turns, he stopped and snapped his fingers.
He turned to Alice and put his hands on his hips, his head high. “I know how we can find the way: Captain Hook. He has maps on his pirate ship. Loads of maps. Tink’s seen ‘em. I bet one of them will tell us where Wonderland is!” Peter was speaking in excited whispers, but it was clear he could barely contain his excitement and how proud he was of himself. “Oh, the cleverness of me.”
And if Captain Hook didn't have a map that could help, they could probably ask the mermaids or the fairies.

As Peter grinned in response to Alice's suggestion, the girl couldn't help but smile back. They were getting each other pumped for adventure already, and Alice hadn't even left her bed. She soon did so, however, taking Peter's hand as he offered it and climbing out from under the covers onto the floor.
Even though she was still in her nightgown, Alice was eager to get going, but Peter seemed to have some thinking to do about where they'd start. It'd certainly be hard to search for something at night, Alice thought. She was relieved, therefore, when he seemed to have an idea- if a rather audacious one. "A pirate ship? How exciting," she said. "And this captain and his ship are... oh!" She clapped her hands as she realized where they must be headed. "They're in Neverland, aren't they?" Everything was coming together now. Peter had said they'd have to go there on a starry night, which a look out the window confirmed was the case tonight. If going there- which Alice was hoping to do anyway- might help them get to Wonderland, then it'd be a two-for-one bargain!
Of course, there was one problem, and that would be that they'd undoubtedly have to face the pirates while they were there. But Peter wouldn't have suggested it if he hadn't thought he could handle them. Even if he did occasionally get spooked by kittens, he was a strong boy after all.
Alice was obviously very pleased by his proposal. Peter crossed his arms across his chest with a smug grin, which only widened when she clapped her hands. “Of course they’re in Neverland.” Peter said this confidently. Then he paused and rolled his eyes upwards, considering. “Well… they were when I left, anyway.”
He shrugged this thought away and took Alice’s hand, pulling her toward the window. “C’mon, Alice! You’ll love Neverland. It’s gotta be ten times better than Wonderland’ll ever be.” Peter was about to lead Alice right out the window, but she was still very much on the ground and not flying at all. He gave an impatient little scoff. “Oh. Almost forgot.”
Peter dropped down to stand on her window seat and pulled a small leather pouch from his belt. He carefully undid the knots and as the bag opened a soft golden glow lit up the boy’s face. He reached into the back and pulled out a pinch of glowing golden Pixie Dust. “Ready?”
Peter sprinkled the glittery dust over Alice’s head and shoulders with a grand gesture. Then he took care to tie the bag up and return it to his belt. Once the Pixie Dust was secure, he looked to Alice and put his hands on his hips, watching her expectantly.
“Do you remember what to do?” Peter had taken Alice flying the first time they met. It had been daytime and he had been unable to take her to Neverland (there were no stars visible), but he could show her how to fly— well out of sight of any grown ups, of course.

The time had come, as the walrus had said- with Peter's answer, it was clear that their next stop was Neverland.
Caught up in the excitement, Alice also nearly forgot that she couldn't fly on her own. "From what you've told me, I'm certain it will- oh!" she said, stopping in surprise as she realized that she'd almost ended up walking out the window. Peter was already on it though, as he stood at the window and brought forth the pouch of pixie dust. Alice tried to get a better look at the substance itself, but Peter was already sprinkling it all over her before she could.
"How could I forget?" Alice answered when Peter asked if she remembered what to do to fly. She was proud of her memory, but it didn't take much to remember an experience like that one! "I have to think happy thoughts, of course." That wouldn't be so difficult. She could just think of the first time she'd flown- that was happy enough! And even without it, she had many other happy memories to choose from, or even happy imaginings. She got so caught up in her happy thinking that she started floating away on her own- Dinah gaping at the sight from the floor.
"Oh! It's started! I'm flying, Peter!" By this point she was too excited to keep quiet. Flipping over in the air, she held out her hand to Peter. "Now then, could you lead me to Neverland, please?" she asked with a smile, as if giving her destination to a carriage driver. "We mustn't be late!"
