Participating Characters:Sally , Goliath , Jack Skellington Forum Location: New York Town Time of Day: late at night Weather: Pleasant Thread Location: Central Park Premise: Jack and Sally tour Rohandor and stop for a rest in the deserted park.
The residents of New York Town had seen just about everything. So, when an old black hearse drawn by an invisible horse made its way through Times Square, some of them didn’t even bother to give it a second look. They saw what they expected to see— weird street performers or maybe puppets or animatronics. There was probably a person inside the hearse part, controlling all the movements. All in all it was just another night in New York.
“Can you believe it! The SIZE of it! Simply incredible.” Jack gestured with his free hand as he spoke with Sally, the other hand loosely gripping the reigns. “They’ll never believe us when we tell them THIS is actually only a tiny model of the real thing.” Jack gestured to a tiny Statue of Liberty souvenir in Sally’s hands. Jack had purchased it from a man with a curious shop set up on the street. (That man had run away, but Jack had left behind a very well preserved rat to pay him for the statue.)
Jack turned his head to look at all the people again. Many of them were staring at little screens or pausing to take photos. Some were even taking pictures of himself and Sally. Jack waved happily at them. “Hello! HELLO THERE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK TOWN!”
Jack was thoroughly enjoying himself. Soon the massive buildings gave way to a sort of well manicured forest within the city. Jack gave Bob’s reins a little tug and directed him onto this path that led into the trees. It was very late out and the spookiness of the park felt almost like home. It was quiet and, Jack felt, quite romantic.
After a while they came to a huge fountain. Jack jumped nimbly from his seat. “Lets rest here for a while.” The Pumpkin King went around to Sally’s side of the hearse and offered her his hand to step down. He grinned brightly at her. “Are you happy you came with me?”
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

When they had set out from Halloween Town to tour Rohandor, Sally hadn't rightly known what to expect. If anything, she supposed, she had hoped to start off small. Sally should have known that that was not the way of the Pumpkin King. What a place to begin! New York Town! While Jack spoke animatedly, laughing loud, eyes as bright and dazzling as the many lights around them, Sally took in the sights in a different manner.
Her large eyes were contemplative, drinking in the scene, and altogether Sally didn't know if she would really have enjoyed the hustle and bustle without Jack sitting beside her. She gasped often, or would comment on the ever-evolving marvels to her companion, or reply to one of his grander proclamations of amazement. After their hearse ambled down countless roads, they reached a crossing point that was the largest, loudest, brightest and busiest yet.
One thing that Sally was surprised most about was how well she and Jack were received. Other than a street merchant, not a single person had screamed or ran away, though Sally knew that was just because the Pumpkin King hadn't deigned to try to scare them.
Jack remarked, gleeful and entranced, at the size of it all and Sally craned her neck to look up at the tops of buildings so very far away. "It smells like the drain pipes by the lake," Sally observed, talking louder than she would've liked to be heard over the din. Whatever it may have sounded to the lay person, Sally wasn't criticizing or complaining about the odor. Quite contrarily, she was fond of it, and found the likeness of home in the stench soothing.
Jack indicated the small trinket that Sally cupped carefully between both hands on her lap. She glanced down at it and frowned in thought. "I still wonder if we should've left the shrunken head," she mused absently. Sally didn't know the exchange rate on rats in New York Town, after all. She noticed at the same time Jack did that people were taking photographs of them. Sally giggled at Jack's excitement and waved more sedately beside him.
"What a treasure," Sally gasped when the hearse bore them out of the crossroads and toward a domesticated forest of some sort. "All of these trees in the middle of the city." Jack guided their horse, Bob, through one of the gates and onto an ambling path beneath the darkened trees. Sally watched the branches whisper in the wind and conspire among each other wistfully and wound up leaning against Jack's side while she did.
The hearse came onto a wide, paved area with a giant, circular fountain nothing whatsoever like the Gothic sort that was in the square of Halloween Town. "That sounds lovely," Sally sighed, when Jack proposed they stop for a rest. She had seen and experienced much and the moment of private would be nice to recharge with and reflect on everything. Jack came around to her side of the bench and held out a hand to help her down. She accepted it, leaving the statue on her seat.
Once on the ground, Sally paused to sling both arms around Jack's neck - she had to stand on her tip-toes to do so. "I don't think I've ever been happier in my entire life," she answered quietly to him, staring at the empty sockets of his skull adoringly.

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Aug 26, 2017 21:17:51 GMT -5
Night settled over Manhattan, and at the very top of the Eyrie building, something extraordinary was happening. Statues perched around the castle on the top of the tower seemed to crack, and then the largest of the figures spread its wings, letting out a mighty roar as Goliath awakened from the stone sleep.
The rest of the clan followed suit, gathering around their leader, as was customary these days. There was too much at stake to risk New York Town, and Goliath intended to make sure that his city was as safe as it could be.
Which was why he sent the clan out in teams of two: Broadway and Lexington, Brooklyn and Angela, Hudson and Bronx. They could help protect each other, as well as the people of this city. Goliath intended to patrol too, but he needed some time to himself, some time to think. Which was why he hadn't had Bronx stay at the castle so that he could patrol with Hudson himself.
As soon as everyone had taken to the skies, Goliath spread his own wings, taking a moment to look out over the city. So much had changed....., but he was determined to go through with his plan, provided he could find a safe way to do it. He didn't want to be rash about this...., but he wanted to do everything he could to make Elisa happy.
The large Gargoyle ran towards the ramparts, throwing himself off of the tallest tower of Castle Wyvern, diving for a few seconds before his wings unfurled to catch the air currents, using them to slow his descent. He headed towards Central Park, to make sure that all was well as he hadn't assigned anyone to it tonight.
Central Park was one of his favourite places in the city. It reminded him of home, in a way. But at the same time, it was quite different from what had once been his home. Still, he loved the almost wildness of it, deep in the heart of the city as it was.
He glided over the trees, his sharp eyes on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary, but it was the scream that alerted him that something wasn't quite right.
Goliath frowned, listening for where the scream had come from. Sure enough, after just another moment, there was another scream, followed by several shouts. It didn't take him long to locate where they were coming from; near one of the fountains, and Goliath soon saw the reason for the panic.
There were two creatures, human-shaped in appearance, standing near the fountain. One of them was so skinny he looked like he might break, looking rather like .... a skeleton. The other was more human-looking, but it was clear that she wasn't.
A small crowd, likely from some event in the park, was gathered near the fountain, and a member of the group had picked up a rock. From the way he held it and the way he looked at the couple, Goliath knew that he was going to throw it at them. Without a moment's thought, he let out a roar, moving into a dive, before flaring his wings out once more, catching both the air and the rock as it left the man's hand.
"Let's get out of here!" the man shouted, and the group moved to disperse even as Goliath drew himself up to his full height, eyes flashing white. If someone tried to throw something else, he'd be ready.
He watched for a moment longer as the people continued to move away, then caped his wings as he turned towards the others.
"Are you all right?" he asked, his voice a deep rumble of concern. He was deeply curious about these two; it was clear they weren't from here, but the didn't appear to mean any harm. And in his mind, so long as they didn't intend to hurt anyone, they were welcome here.

Jack had brought a notebook to record observations and sketches throughout their trip. He planned on digging this out of his trunk and starting tonight, beginning with drawings of the impossibly tall buildings that circled the park they had stopped in. He had also stowed away blankets and pillows to make a bed in the back of the hearse, should either of them want to sleep. Before he could do any of this, however, Sally stood up on her toes and wrapped her arms around his neck. Jack didn’t hesitate to twine his bony arms around her waist, a wide grin spreading across his skull. She was speaking softly, her eyes reflecting the lights of the city, and Jack wanted to tell her how beautiful she was.
Except before he could say a word, a very human scream cut through the night. Jack wasn’t at all alarmed by this— Screams were his specialty. Actually, like Sally, he was somewhat surprised this hadn’t happened sooner. Usually Jack encouraged screaming, but right now it was very much ruining the romantic mood between himself and Sally.
He turned his head and saw the group of humans that had gathered by the fountain. Bob tossed his head and nickered, also annoyed by the sounds they were making. Jack let go of Sally and stepped toward them with every intention of speaking to them (this was, after all, a diplomatic trip), but one of the humans only let out another scream. Jack sighed, tried again to speak to them, but stopped short when he saw one of them reach for a rock.
His entire demeanor changed. He seemed to grow taller and more menacing, just in the way he held himself. His face contorted into a terrifying scowl of pure rage. Had he been alone, without Sally, he may have let them throw stones (which, after all, couldn’t really hurt him) and continue to try and reason with them, but he wouldn’t tolerate it in Sally’s presence. He inhaled deeply with every intention of giving them the scare of their lives.
Before Jack could make a sound a very inhumanroar came from above. A creature fell from the sky, blocking the rock that had been thrown. The humans ran away and Jack felt the anger seep out of his bones.
The huge creature turned to them and Jack’s empty eye sockets quickly took him in. A monster like this? Here? How surprising. He asked if they were all right, and Jack turned to Sally, searching her face. He put his arm around her in a comforting gesture, holding her to his side, before turning back to their unexpected protector.
“Yes. Screams are welcome. Stones… I had not anticipated that.” Jack held out his free hand. “I am Jack Skellington. This is Sally. We are explorers from another realm.” If this creature knew about Rohandor, then he would understand. If not, Jack would fill him in.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Her Jack was often intrigued, amazed and diverted by various things. His sense of wonder was something that she found both sweet and admirable. Whenever Sally managed to be the object of that wonder, however, she almost couldn't believe her luck. Standing there, their two impossibly tall silhouettes holding onto one another, Jack looking down at her, they were each so lost in the other that even the remarkable place that surrounded them fell away. The moment was perfect...
And, so, naturally, it didn't last.
The first scream turned Sally's head right along with Jack's. She looked puzzled and a little concerned when she saw the group of humans nearby, on the other edge of the wide paved area the fountain was built upon. "Oh, I was afraid this would happen," Sally lamented in a whisper to Jack when his thin arms fell away from her waist and he made to move closer to the humans.
Frustrating as it was for these natives to interrupt what had been such a wonderful moment, Sally tried to empathize with them. She and Jack were a frightful sight - it was in the job description - especially in dark, empty venues like this park was just now. Another scream came and Sally reached out a hand to grasp Jack's elbow to stop him. "Maybe we should just-" she began, when she saw one of the humans snatch a stone from the ground and heft it threateningly.
Sally gasped, but it wasn't for her safety that she was worried. Jack was an undead skeleton and she was a living ragdoll. The stone wouldn't do much to either of them. No, Sally was suddenly very concerned for the well-being and sanity of the humans in question. She knew how protective Jack could get of her and at once her worries were confirmed when the Pumpkin King's air changed from that of a gentleman to a nightmare.
She tried to say something to dissuade Jack again, to urge them to just be on their way and not create a ruckus, when the stone left the human's hand. She knew, then, it was too late. Jack would send them screaming into the night. The rock was mid-flight when a roar broke out over the scene. Sally glanced up to see a shadow fall out of the sky, snatch the rock from the air and land upon the pavement before them. It was winged and draconian and Sally let out a sigh of relief. Another monster! Maybe he could settle this for them?
The humans lost their nerve and scattered, instead. The monster folded his wings over his back like a cloak and asked if they were all right. Jack turned on the spot to scrutinize her and she smiled encouragingly at him. "I'm fine," she promised. He drew her to his side, where she stood with her hands clasped together against her breast. Jack proceeded with introductions, perhaps a little less genially than he would've normally been, still vexed and disappointed about the humans.
"Thank you for helping us. Jack tried to tell them we meant no harm, but they wouldn't listen."

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Sept 20, 2017 23:43:21 GMT -5
Goliath, at this point, was all too used to the sound of screams at the sight of him, an occurrence that still cut him right to his heart, if he was being honest with himself. He had grown up in an era where, if they weren't exactly completely accepted by the humans, they were at least tolerated. Humans and Gargoyles had lived side by side, once, each knowing full well that the other existed, offering each other enough respect to co-exist.
But these days, even though the people of New York Town knew about Gargoyles, he had his clan was still treated with disdain, bordering on outright fear. If he could help keep others from experiencing what it felt like to have someone scream at the mere sight of you, Goliath was only too happy to help out.
The taller of the two beings wrapped an arm around the other before turning to Goliath, stating that screams were welcome, something that the Gargoyle hadn't expected. Then again, nothing about this night was turning out as he'd thought it would, and it was just beginning.
He introduced himself as Jack Skellington, and his companion as Sally, stating that they were from another realm, something that didn't at all surprise Goliath. The large Gargoyle had been learning everything he could about Rohandor since they'd joined the realm, and the skeleton's explanation made perfect sense. His companion thanked Goliath, stating that Jack had tried to tell the humans they hadn't meant any harm, but that they hadn't listened.
A small smile found its way onto his chiseled features at that; it was so very like his own experiences of most humans, until Elisa had shown him that there were exceptions.
"It is my experience that humans often fear anyone who is different," he said, reaching out to shake Jack's hand. "I am Goliath," the gargoyle added by way of introduction. "Is this your first time in New York Town?" He was guessing that it was, but at the same time, well, he didn't want to assume. If it was their first time, though, he might be able to be of some assistance. He could show them around, at the very least, or possibly act as some sort of protector, just in case something like this happened again.

Sally thanked their monstrous rescuer and Jack nodded his agreement as she explained that he had not meant them any harm. Scares were one thing, hurting someone quite another. He was a gentleman, a king, and would never dream of doing something like that. Unless provoked, of course.
Their new friend explained a little more about the humans of New York Town and Jack suspected there was a great deal more behind that statement. He shook Jack’s hand with his massive clawed one and Jack looked at it thoughtfully. Since seeing Goliath, his mind had been spinning through his vast knowledge of monsters as he tried to identify just what Goliath was.
Is this your first time in New York Town?
At this question, Jack gave an enthusiastic grin. “Yes and no! Every Halloween my people and I travel the realms of men and I’ve been here before but…” He squinted up at the distant lights of the tall buildings as they rose above the trees, his free hand raised thoughtfully to his chin while the other still rested at Sally’s side. “… it is very different, on that night. Time is strange. Memory stranger. And anyway I am always very focused on my work.”
Jack focused back on Goliath. "This is my first time traveling outside the Holiday and Sally’s first time all around. So… this is the first time that counts.” Jack changed subjects then, somewhat abruptly. “Forgive me, but are you a gargoyle?” Jack’s brow lifted expectantly and he almost seemed to hold his breath as he awaited Goliath’s reply. There were gargoyles in Halloween Town, certainly, but nothing like him! The ones he knew were made of stone and usually never left the rooftops they’d been built into.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally very thoughtfully observed the stranger's face and general behavior. She was very interested in there being monsters native to New York Town, but more than that there was something about their new friend that intrigued her. A deep kind of wisdom, maybe even melancholy, that Sally saw in his eyes and the set of his broad shoulders. His voice was deep and melodic and soothing and Sally, like Jack, registered a lot unsaid about his comment on humans fearing the alien.
The monster named himself Goliath, and Sally smiled. Well, this was turning out to be just as cordial as she and Jack had hoped their run-in with the humans moments ago would've gone. He shook Jack's hand and, when he asked if this was their first time in New York Town, Sally took her turn to shake hands with him.
The question brightened Jack up. Sally smiled gently while he answered. She was glad that the brooding cloud that'd started to manifest at the humans's reactions was fading away. It wouldn't do to make a poor first impression with Goliath. When Jack was done explaining, Sally quickly tacked on, "The city is lovely. We've really enjoyed it."
Jack asked for clarification on what type of monster Goliath was. Sally's expression became interested again. She looked with wide eyes at their new friend to see if Jack's guess was right.

Most would have been surprised to encounter an ambulatory and clearly sentient skeleton, but then again, Goliath came from a world where magic was common, where faeries existed, where the Children of Oberon were numerous. It was true that he hadn't seen anything quite like Jack or Sally before, but he had met a variety of Oberon's Children during the trip home from Avalon, and they weren't any stranger than some of his previous acquaintances.
And since he knew what it was like to have humans fear him, he was quite sympathetic to these two. Though, the more he talked with them, the less it seemed to him that the human's fear bothered them, something that he found to be quite interesting.
He shook Sally's hand when she offered, giving her a small smile. Goliath made sure to be as careful as possible, keeping his touch as delicate as he could. He was quite a bit larger than she was, after all, and it would be quite easy to hurt her without meaning to. But it was at that point that Jack started to answer Goliath's questions, telling him that, while it wasn't his first time here, it was the first time that counted. When he'd been here before on Halloween, he'd been working.
"Your work is related to Halloween?" Goliath asked, curious. "I have enjoyed my Halloweens here." It was one of the days, after all, that he could walk down the street with Elisa, without gathering the stares of the general public.
"I am glad that you have been enjoying the city," he told Sally, offering her another little smile. "Though if you would like, I could show you around, maybe keep anyone else from attacking you like that."
And then Jack asked if he was a gargoyle. Goliath nodded, uncaping his wings and stretching them, so that they could be seen by his companions. "I am," he responded. "Are you familiar with my kind?" If he was, then that might mean that there were Gargoyles in other places in Rohandor, something that he would dearly love to discover.
