By the time Sally had joined them with his jaw bone, Jack had pushed himself up into a sitting position. He rubbed at the back of his skull with his boney hand before letting it fall into his lap. He looked at Sally, his eyes full of gratitude, and held still while she lifted his jaw back into place. Once it popped back in, Jack moved it around to test it, cleared his throat, and nodded. “Yes. It’ll take more than that to crack this thick skull.” As if to demonstrate, Jack rapped on the side of his head with his knuckles, making a dry, hallow sound. “The only thing wounded is my pride.”
Jack leaned to the side a little to see past Wildwing and saw that the puck had somehow made it into the goal. HIs brow flew up as his eye sockets widened and a grin spread across his features. “It went in!” Obviously it was a lucky shot, given his terrible form and even worse landing on the ice. He was still sitting there, his long, skinny legs stretched out before him, but the ice and the cold didnt bother him in the least. He was, after all, undead.
“I’m afraid we won’t be able to stay until next Tuesday, Captain. We have to see as much as we can and I promised to be back in a few days. Summer is nearly over and Halloween will be here before we know it.” While he spoke, Jack was looking about himself, his brow furrowed, trying to determine just how he was going to get back on his feet. Realizing any attempt he made would probably end with another spill onto the ice, Jack looked up at Wildwing with a somewhat sheepish smile. “Could I trouble you for a hand up?”
Wildwing relaxed slightly as Sally seemed to....force the jaw back on with little difficulty, and Jack was ruefully accepting of his slip; apparently this was something of a common occurrence. He nodded as he looked at the goal. "Well, I'd be lying if I said that was the worst first time I've ever seen someone have on the ice; you should have seen my brother when he was a kid." He chuckled as he remembered those innocent times, poor Nosedive having almost no coordination whatsoever. More than a couple broken limbs had happened on the ice of Puckworld.
He took the hand, attempting to pull Jack back up to his feet as he listened to the skeleton's schedule. "Well, that's too bad," he said. "But we've got plenty of games coming up, and you can always come visit in the off-season. I could show you some pointers."
It seemed that, whatever Halloween Town was, Jack was quite an important figure in it, and that this vacation would have to be an all-too-short one.
Wildwing could relate; this was the first relaxing conversation he'd had on any subject in quite some time. "So what exactly do you do in Halloween Town? You just...celebrate Halloween?" There was an ignorance in his question, of course, but also an honest curiosity.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally pursed her lips at Jack in shrewd, somewhat exhaustive amusement when he could speak again and gave a knock on his own skull to prove he wasn't injured. "Well, I'm sure it'll bounce back," she said teasingly when Jack mentioned his pride. Craning his round head, Jack looked around Sally's still-kneeling form at the net strung on its frame behind her. She chuckled quietly at Jack's excitement that, slip and fall aside, he'd managed to get the puck into the netting.
The ragdoll turned toward the contemplative when Wildwing spoke next. "You have a brother? So are you hatched? Or born? Or made?" Sally stopped in her questioning suddenly. She covered her mouth with both hands and looked distinctly awkward and embarrassed. Lowering them slowly to both rest, clasped, against her chest, she asked tentatively, "I'm sorry. Were those rude things to ask?"
Sally really didn't know how customs would vary between realms of Rohandor. In Halloween Town any of the queries she'd just posed were casual and proper - showing a polite interest in someone's haunted origins. She didn't want to offend Wildwing, though, and after he'd been such a gracious and gentlemanly host.
Wildwing helped Jack to his feet and, after they discussed how to arrange his and Sally's attending one of these games of hockey, the duck-man moved on to take his inquisitive turn. The ragdoll was still a little uneasy that she had said something insensitive to Wildwing, but when he asked about Halloween Town Sally looked expectantly toward Jack. Deferring to him in this case as she had earlier.

Jack was very grateful for Widlwing’s help up and managed to regain his feet again without another slip. He brushed his coat tails and pant-legs and straightened his tie to put himself to rights while he listened to Sally and Wildwing discuss the later’s brother. Sally voiced a question that had not yet occurred to Jack, but now that she had he was also very curious. If they did hatch from eggs, they would certainly have to be quite large.
Jack tilted his head to the side, watching Sally become suddenly silent, her hands covering her mouth. It took a moment for Jack to realize her worry. He followed her gaze to Wildwing. “Forgive us if we have offended you, Captain. We don’t get out of Halloween Town much… er… off season.” Jack liked the term Wildwing had used and thought he would use it more often.
Speaking of Halloween Town, Wildwing asked to know more about where they were from. Jack smiled, lifting his head proudly. “Halloween Town is home to all creatures, ghosts, and ghouls who bring about the Halloween Holiday ever year in the realm of mortals. Scares and frights are our specialty and we work very hard to make every year better than the last.” Jack paused to consider all the things Wildwing had said to them thus far. “But… you are not originally from the “human” realm, are you, Captain?” Jack did air quotes with his long boney fingers. “Where in Rohandor are your people from, if I may ask?”
Jack struck upon an idea. “Oh! And will you show me on the map I’m making? It’s out in the hearse.” Jack gestured the way they had come, but seemed to deflate when he realized he would have to make his way back across the ice the way he had come. Now that he’d rattled his bones with a fall, he was a little less confident than before.
A laugh and a hand wave. "No, no, it's fine, I just....nobody around here asks questions like that much." Even Phil hadn't pressed very hard when he'd been made aware of where the ducks hailed from; all he cared about was if they could play hockey well. That detective had been more concerned and skeptical, really.
But now these two were curious, and if he'd learned anything in their short meeting, that curiosity was insatiable. And he didn't mind telling the story, but it was....a little painful.
Wildwing sighed. "My brother, my friends, and I are from a place called Puckworld. It's in a different dimension than this place; we came here to stop a tyrant named Lord Dragaunus who conquered our planet."And took away Canard, he thought to himself. "It wouldn't be on any map. And there's not really any way to get back there right now without tearing up dimensional gateways. Which, ah, obviously we don't wanna do."
A sense of melancholy briefly came over him, but he snapped out of it and looked at the pair. It wouldn't do anyone any good for him to be in this funk.
This Halloween Town sounded interesting enough. They liked to scare people, but it seemed like it was in a fairly innocuous, fun way rather than legitimate mortal terror. "I'll definitely try and visit when I can, then."
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally sighed in relief when Wildwing assured her that her questions weren't untoward. She lowered her hands and finally rose from her kneeling position to stand alongside Jack on the ice. The Pumpkin King radiated pride and joy when he explained more about Halloween Town and Sally found herself smiling just watching how wide his skull grinned or how much light came from the shadows of his eye sockets.
Jack mentioned his map, back in the hearse and Sally noticed how apprehensively he measured the ice between him and the edge of the rink. She opened her mouth, ready to offer to guide Jack on his way by offering an arm, when Wildwing began to answer her former question. While he spoke, Sally could feel the hurt in his words and the discomfort skirting along his avian face.
She watched him attentively, but also compassionately. Sally was really regretting asking her question in the first place. Even though Wildwing was willing to answer it, she didn't want to cause him any distress. Mention of other dimensions wasn't as mystifying to Sally - and, perhaps, Jack - than it would've been to other audiences. Doctor Finkelstein often spoke of them and had several experiments that had attempted to open portals to them that had always flopped.
Wildwing closed his answer and spoke of visiting Halloween Town. Sally tried to judge what to say, if anything, that would be of help. "I'm sure you'll be a scream," she smiled. "And it looks like you've made a great life here, even if it's not... home." Sally prayed that her mindfully phrased words were more tactful and soothing than the haphazard question that'd gotten them there.

“A different dimension.” Jack echoed Wildwing’s words, his eye sockets widening in awe. He had long suspected that something similar had been in place between Halloween Town and the rest of the world. This theory had only been supported when he stumbled through the door into Christmas Town. Of course… Halloween Town had moved, somehow, to help form Rohandor, and now things were quite different. More direct. He didnt need the power of Halloween to come here. He could have walked.
Jack’s mind was spiraling away, chasing ideas and questions. After a moment his mind settled on the concept of a conquered planet. Jack considered this carefully and tried to imagine what it would be like if he had lost his home and perhaps everyone he knew. It had never been a possibility before and the idea put a chill into his bones that had nothing to do with the ice under his feet. He turned his eye sockets to Sally, watching as she gently tried to reassure Wildwing. To be forced from his home... and never see her again…
Jack looked to Wildwing, his empty eyes full of empathy, which quickly melted into grim determination. “Where is this Dragaunus? I, Jack— The Pumpkin King!!— will help you defeat him!” As he spoke, Jack’s voice took on a deep and commanding tone and the lights flickered overhead.
If Dragaunus could destroy a planet, if he had come here… what if he tried to destroy Rohandor, and Halloween Town along with it? Jack wouldn’t stand idly by and let it happen!
"I think I'd have to get a costume first, but thanks, Sally," he said. "And...well, honestly...Even if we never get back to Puckworld, we can protect our new home now. All of us can."
And it struck Wildwing that he actually believed what he was saying. It had been hard, yes. It was still hard. Every day, there was some small part of him that wished everything had stayed the same. That Dragaunus had never resurfaced. That Canard was still with them.
And yet....he'd made a life for himself here. They all had. The thrill of the hockey crowds had become as regular to him as the sounds of sizzling lasers.
His eyes widened slightly as Jack declared, with great vigor and intensity, that he would help beat Dragaunus. Was it his imagination, or were the lights flickering?
They stopped, and he looked at Jack a little stunned. This was a complete stranger, having only met him minutes before, vowing to help him fight an ancient evil lizard. The absurdity nearly made him laugh.
But hadn't this been the whole reason he'd been meaning to engage in the affairs of Rohandor? Friends? Allies?
A nod. "Jack, any help you and Sally can give would be appreciated more than you can possibly imagine."
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

The ragdoll was incredibly glad that her attempt to soothe Wildwing was met with some measure of success. He wasn't plunged further into dark thoughts, and even looked, to Sally, like her words struck a chord of content conviction in him. Sally's lips pulled upwards at the edges in soft agreement and reassurance. Wildwing spoke of how they all could protect their new home, and that made Sally think of things that, until then, she hadn't.
Jack seized on a different part of Wildwing's words than Sally had fixated on. While she was busy focusing on his melancholy from being cast from his native dimension, Jack latched onto the reason for that casting in the first place. Sally's lips bent downward and her brow furrowed in heavy contemplation when Jack demanded to know where the villain from Wildwing's story - Dragaunus - was, and promised his help in defeating him.
Ordinarily Sally may have been likely to get stuck turning over all of the dark thoughts that came with knowledge of this villain, Dragaunus. Maybe she would... later. Just now, she was busy looking from the fierce determination bending Jack's skull to the astonished gratitude she detected in the subtle contours of Wildwing's avian face.
Sally glided just a few inches in front of Jack and bowed her head to their host. "We're happy to," she said firmly. Sally didn't turn to direct that comment at Jack, too. She doubted he had thought of including her when he made his claim to help against Dragaunus. He was ever thoughtful and paranoid over her well-being. Which was sweet, usually, but just then Sally was glad the conversation had worked around it. She would help, too, if she could in any way, and that was the end of it.

Wildwing agreed that they would be allies. Jack would have seized upon this new mission right away and gone right into asking questions and making plans, but Sally skated forward between the duck and the skeleton and spoke before he could. Jack blinked and seemed to remember himself, looking at the back of Sally’s head.
It was true that Jack had never considered bringing Sally into anything like this. He’d offered his own assistance— not Sally’s or even that of his own people. He was a king, yes, but he did not have an army. He had only his own skills to offer in this. That said, he would not be like Dr. Finklestien. He would not lock her away from the world for her own good. Still, if she was going, he would not leave her side.
Jack put his hand on Sally’s shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. She was always reminding him just how brave she really was. He looked over her head at Wildwing and nodded his agreement to Sally’s words.
“Come to the hearse. I will copy down my map for you so you can find your way to Halloween Town if you need us.” Jack began to slide-step his way back toward the edge of the ice. "It would be better if you had a messenger bat. Sally, do you think Lock, Shock, and Barrel could deliver one to Wildwing?"
Again Wildwing's heart warmed at how instantly and immediately these two had pledged to help him. "It's always good to have friends. Especially in places like this."
He raised an eyebrow at the word "hearse". Wasn't that something they transported dead people in around here. Then again, he mused inwardly, perhaps that wasn't the most inappropriate mode of transportation for a skeleton man and a stitched-together rag woman from a place called Halloween Town.
And he was admittedly fairly curious as to what their map would look like.
The eyebrow inched up a bit further. "Bat messenger?" he repeated, now utterly flummoxed. Somehow it didn't sound like the most reliable mode of contact. And who were Lock, Shock, and Barrel?
"Actually, I think I might have something for that," he suggested, pulling out a communicator, one of Tanya's own design. "This is what we use when we're out fighting crime or Dragaunus to stay in touch with each other. I dunno how good the reception is, but considering that we can get around to different places like that," he said with a finger snap, "I think it should be fine. You just ring that, or we'll ring it, and we can get in touch if we need your help." A grin. "Or just a social call."
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Jack's spindly hand lightly squeezed her shoulder. That he'd support her offering her services without a word reminded Sally how wonderful he was. She focused primarily on Wildwing, who was thanking them in what Sally judged was a very genuine way. Good. If they'd made him feel the least bit less bogged down by the dark memories their questions had accidentally brought to the surface, then she was glad.
Sally twisted her torso to look behind her when Jack's hand fell away from her shoulder and he started to carefully shimmy across the ice. "It's a work in progress, but Jack's been filling it out beautifully since we left Halloween Town. At the least, it'll show you the way from your home to ours," she added when Jack brought up copying the map he'd been working on.
The ragdoll skated up to Jack and put one arm around his waist, while the other braced his elbow to help him across the ice. When talk of messenger bats came up, Sally was going to comment, but then Jack asked if Halloween's trick-or-treaters could be trusted to deliver one to Wildwing. She tended to be less trusting or forgiving of Lock, Shock and Barrel than Jack was, and more jaded and skeptic about how reliable they were in any capacity.
Wildwing's intervention kept her from having to comment. By then, the pair had made it safely to the edge of the rink allowing them to exit it. Sally looked down longingly at her borrowed skates, then stepped off of the ice, plopped down on a seat and started taking them off. She looked up while her fingers undid the laces and her mouth opened in wonder at the device that Wildwing showed them.
"Social calls would be wonderful." Sally's smile for Wildwing changed to a puzzled expression when she spoke to Jack next. "Even if it doesn't work in Halloween Town, I'd bet that the doctor could fix it to."
(OOC: If any of my subtle powerplaying, aka ushering them to the edge of the rink and saying Jack accepted the communicator, are unsatisfactory just let me know and I'll change them! <3)

Jack’s brow was furrowed in concentration as he tried to maneuver his way off the ice without skates and without another fall. He didn’t make it far before Sally moved to help. After a moment Jack worked out that the easiest thing to do was simply lock his knees and stop moving and let Sally push him across the ice like. He gave a soft chuckle once they reached the edge and stepped again onto the strange plastic carpet. He had heard of sea-legs and the odd feeling one would have when returning to land after some time on a ship. Now Jack felt something that he mentally referred to as ‘ice-legs’ because he was still expecting to slip and fall at any moment.
“Thank you, my dear.” Jack watched as Sally began to take off her skates, noting the regretful look on her face. Jack made up his mind then and there to somehow get a pair for Sally. Perhaps for Christmas! Then he could speak with Santa and Undersea Gal about freezing over the bog.
Wildwing offered Jack the communication device and Jack held it up, his skull an open picture of wonder. He studied it closely, turning it over in his hands, pressing buttons experimentally and grinning in surprised delight at the static sound it made. He wanted to take it apart very badly to see how it worked, but knew he would not be able to. “Marvelous! And this goes two ways, like a telephone without a wire? Yes, that would be much more convenient than a bat.”
Once Sally had finished removing her skates, Jack motioned with a long boney hand for she an Wildwing to follow him back outside. He led them through the doors, into the dark lobby, and on outside. Bob the phantom horse was munching on a decorative shrub, but had not wandered very far. The invisible animal lifted its head, which of course the others could only know by the way the reins were oriented.
Jack climbed up into the back of the hearse, threw open one of the trunks, and began to rummage around inside. His notebook was in there somewhere…
"I'm sure he has," Wildwing said, tone approving. "You guys seem like you have pretty good heads on your shoulders....I swear that sounded better when I was thinking about it."
He nodded at Jack's next question and activated it, pointing at the various numbers Tanya'd programmed into it. "You just call any of these and one of us should pick up if we're not playing a game. And it should work there? It's not like we use cell service. That's pure duck technology."
He sounded a little boastful, but mostly he was just proud of Tanya; she could be a little annoying or hard to deal with sometimes, but her tech and know-how had saved their necks more times than he could count.
Now he followed them outside the rink, carefully making sure the locks were back in place as he did so. He'd have to remember to unlock them when he came back in or risk setting off the alarms again. And that would be a headache he'd prefer not to deal with, given that the others would be annoyed and on edge enough already.
In front of him was an elegant hearse that Jack had taken it upon himself to jump into, evidently looking for his map. And there were reins floating in mid-air attached to the hearse.
He was pretty sure he heard some whinnying from that general vicinity. An invisible horse.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally was a little slower to remove and return her skates to where she'd got them, thanks to how distracted she was. Jack turned the device Wildwing gave them over in his bony fingers, asking questions while their avian host elaborated a bit more. Sally was sure that Jack would retain all of this information, but carefully committed each instruction to memory just in case.
When she was done, Jack lead the way out of the cavernous room with the ice rink, back into the entry hall, then through the front doors and onto the pavement beyond. Jack climbed into the back of the hearse, where ordinarily a casket would be carried, and started sifting through their luggage to find the map. Sally, meanwhile, was busy with their steed.
"Oh, Bob, no!" Sally strode forward, scowling. "Those aren't for eating!" She waved at the horse, who backed up several steps, noted by the sound of his hooves hitting the sidewalk, and snorted derisively at her, buffeting her face. Sally looked dryly at the place the floating reins made his head out to be, then shook her head. "Here," she said, reaching under the driver's bench of the hearse and collecting a rotten apple from a bag of them there.
Sally passed the blackened, soggy, shriveled thing under Bob's mouth and he ate it - a curious sight to watch. Looking apologetically at Wildwing, she rested one hand on the side of Bob's neck. "I'm so sorry about that. He's such a glutton."
