The people of Nottingham had come a long way since the days when Prince John had ruled over them. The miserly prince had crushed their very spirits and gone so far as to imprison most of them. To look at all the smiling faces now… it seemed like another world entirely.
It had not been Robin’s idea to have this fair, but he had eagerly approved it. There were booths selling delicious food and all sorts of hand made items. There had been tournaments all day for all ages, everything from foot races to archery to even a joust. The mead and the ale were flowing generously, a stage had been set up for a play and a fire-eater, and rumor had it there would be fireworks after dark.
Robin glanced up and judged the time. He was needed to judge an archery contest later. It wouldn’t have been fair if he himself had entered, but he was happy enough to judge.
A throng of small animal children rushed past him, some wearing make-shift helmets and wielding wooden swords while others had toy bows. Robin watched them fondly, but noted that a few of the children were from Zootopia and other lands of Rohandor. He’d been surprised to see how many had traveled to Nottingham for this event. Most of them kept calling it a ‘Renaissance Festival.”

Wildwing was in refreshingly good spirits as he looked at the festival around him. They didn't have a game for another two weeks, Dragaunus had been mostly quiet lately, and, frankly, they'd deserved a vacation. News of Nottingham's summer celebration had spread throughout Rohandor rather quickly, and it seemed like a pleasant enough place to visit, so the team had talked Phil into letting them go.
He'd agreed, albeit with the caveat that they promote themselves as much as they could. He was pretty sure some of the others were handing out flyers and brochures. For the moment, he was eyeing an archery game as the wind whipped through his civilian clothes.
The wolf-like attendant seemed to catch his eye and spoke in a high male voice, "Ah, I see you want to test your luck?" He gestured at the succession of large and small targets behind him. "If you hit them all, you win that!" A point at a finely crafted bow, one quite different from the smaller, utilitarian one used for the game.
Despite its primitiveness, Wildwing couldn't help but be attracted to its simplicity. And there was always the possibility of Tanya modifying it or building a new weapon based on it.
He picked up the bow and blunted arrows meant for use in the game. "Sure, I'll give it a shot." They both chuckled at the unintentional pun.
He started to aim.

Robin lifted his nose, breathing in the scents of freshly baked pies from a nearby stand. It brought back memories of an archery tournament. He’d dressed as a Stork and competed for a kiss from Marian. Thinking of his wife now, Robin couldn’t help the lopsided smile that crossed his face. Even though they were together now and happily married, he still got caught up in daydreams about her.
Robin continued on his way, ambling down the path, greeting those he knew as he passed. As it happened, he turned down the isle of gaming booths just in time to see Wildwing pick up the bow. Robin recognized the serious way in which Wildwing took aim and approached the booth to watch.
The wolf behind the stand gave Robin a little bow and an overly friendly grin. Robin recognized him as one of the Sherif’s men… or at least, he HAD been, before King Richard returned and threw the Sherif and Prince John into prison. “Yer Lordness.”
Robin ignored the wolf and spoke to Wildwing instead. “Bit of advice? You’re elbow is too low.”
“Oy!” The wolf glared at them. “That’s cheatin’, that is! Getting help from Robin Hood!”
Robin spread his hands innocently and flashed the wolf a smile.
As Wildwing took aim, his thoughts were interrupted by first by the attendant addressing someone who'd come up behind him as a lord, then a pleasantly accented voice.
He turned to see a red-furred fox dressed in simple green clothing, a long tail poking out behind him. Completing the ensemble was a jaunty yellow cap with a red feather adorning it. And this fox, this "Robin Hood" appeared to be known for archery knowledge, given his advice and that the attendant thought it was cheating
"Little too low, huh?" he said, raising it slightly and firing first at the smallest target. The arrow flew true into the bullseye.
The attendant grumbled something about a "lucky shot," but Wildwing paid it no mind as he turned to Robin. "Thanks for the advice," he said, offering a hand. "I'm new around here. Name's Wildwing. My friends and I thought this looked like a pretty good place to check out."
He wasn't quite sure how to address the "lord" part, admittedly. Robin didn't look like any royalty he'd met, and he certainly didn't act like one, if mingling among those at the festival and offering unsolicited advice was any indication. Maybe he should wait for him to dictate the terms of address.

Robin smiled softly, watching as Wildwing adjusted his posture based on his advice. The arrow hit the target and Robin nodded approval. This was just a gaming booth and the little bow and arrow Wildwing was using was a far cry from the English Longbow Robin himself used, but it was clear to Robin that Wildwing had potential. He had the eye and the strength. It was more than Robin himself had started with.
The duck turned and offered his hand, which Robin did not hesitate to shake. “Nothing to it, Friend. I’m Robert of Locksley, but please, call me Robin.”
The wolf was growing impatient. “Uh… Sirs? Will you shoot again?” Robin noted the wolf seemed a little nervous now.
The fox clapped Wildwing on the shoulder. “What do you say, Wildwing? Why not go for the big prize?”
Robin suspected the wolf wasn’t running an entirely honest operation here. He knew most of the carnival games had very low odds of winning, but rigging them so it was completely impossible to win would not be tolerated. Had the wolf done something like that here, to ensure no one won the grand prize?
The wolf's ears swiveled around on the top of his head as he considered his next move. "But... certainly m'lord must have more important things to do...?"
Robin knew the wolf was trying to get rid of him so he could better take advantage of the tourist. Robin gave an easy shrug. "If my new friend doesn't mind an audience, then I can make time."
The wolf stifled a low growl and held out another blunted arrow for Wildwing.
"Robin it is, then," Wildwing said, glad to have a clarification. He took the arrow with something approaching glee, although even this was restrained. "Sure, why not? Go big or go home," he said, recalling a favorite phrase of Phil's, as the wolf was deeply annoyed. And he nodded at Robin asking if he could stay; he was, after all, a duck born to play hockey. And they lived and died with an audience.
Much like the carnival games back in Anaheim that were at every podunk mom-and-pop theme park that wasn't owned by the big guns, this was quite possibly rigged somehow, and Robin seemed to know it too. At this point, it was almost more fun to mess with the attendant than actually getting the prize.
But then again, he thought, as he fired into the middle target and got another bulls-eye, that would be pretty fun too, right?
The wolf ran his hands down his face in utter frustration now. "You're good," he muttered. "Almost suspicious-likegood."
"What can I say, I'm a natural athlete," the duck deadpanned. "One more target and I win, right?"
"Yes." This was ground-out and painful sounding. "Alright, let's do it to it," he said, glancing at Robin. He turned back to the field.

Robin crossed his arms loosely in front of his chest, a mild smile across his face. He wasn’t watching Wildwing, however. Robin’s attention was fully and obviously on the wolf. The wolf and the fox locked gazes for a tense moment, both of them waiting. Wildwing let the arrow fly and the Wolf blinked first. He scowled at the ground, choosing to lose his best prize over getting shut down completely for cheating.
Robin’s smile widened. The wolf obviously wasn’t that clever— who could hope to pull off this scam when Robin Hood, greatest archer in the world, would be there? Still, Robin decided this was punishment enough for the wolf and didnt press the issue.
The wolf grudgingly handed over the prize bow.
“Well done, Wildwing!” Robin nodded his approval. “If you would like to see some real shooting, there is going to be an archery competition on the tourney grounds. I’m heading that way, so I can show you the way if you’re interested.”
Wildwing had won a game and the targets had been tricky but relatively close. The ones on the grounds would be many yards away and experienced archers would be competing.
Wildwing happily took the bow from the disgruntled wolf, opting mainly for a satisfied smirk. "Hey, don't sweat it, you run a pretty good racket here. I have a friend back home who'd love it," he deadpanned, to which they growled and waved him away.
He turned back to Robin. "Thanks for the help there. Pretty sure he was about to do something....not very nice," he admitted. "He said you were a lord, but....you sure don't look or act like any royalty I've met before. Usually, they're all stuck-up and snobby."
Robin, by contrast, was friendly, approachable, and had just helped someone who, for all he knew, was a commoner win a rigged game at his own festival. He liked the guy already, honestly.
He next considered the offer Robin had made. It wasn't like he had anything else to do, and he'd need to test out the new bow. "Sure, sounds fun."
A small cough from behind him interrupted any further thoughts, and he turned to see the wolf looking expectant, holding out a hand. "You may have won, m'lords, but the contest still requires, ah, a certain payment. I believe it's against the law not to? Yer own laws, Lord Robin."
Wildwing dug into his pockets, grumbling as he pulled out a small stack of bills and slapped it into the owlf's hand. "This cover it?" he asked.
Post by Robin Hood on Oct 14, 2017 22:08:28 GMT -5
Wildwing thanked him for his help, which Robin waved off. “Think nothing of it, friend.” However, when Wildwing went on to admit that Robin wasn’t exactly what he expected when it came to nobility, Robin couldn’t help but laugh. He rubbed absently at the fur on the back of his neck, a sideways smile across his maw. “Well… that’s a long story. To simplify things, lets say I married into the job.” It wasn’t the whole truth. Robin was a lord by birth, after all. That said, he’d spent most of his adult life as an outlaw, hiding out in the woods.
Wildwing agreed to join Robin at the archery fields but before they could go the wolf demanded his payment. The fox’s ears twitched slightly at the wolf’s tone, but his smile never wavered. “Yes… we wouldn’t want any law breaking here. Not on a fine day like this.”
Wildwing paid and Robin gave the wolf a pleasant wave before turning his back on him. “This way. I think we’ll even get there before they begin.”
While they walked, Robin spied a young rabbit. He waved the boy over and gave him a message to carry to a certain hedgehog about posting a guard near the wolf’s archery stand, just to ensure no more tricky games. The young rabbit gave an eager nod and ran off through the crowd.
That done, Wildwing again had Robin’s full attention. “In for the festival, I take it. From where abouts? Zootopia?”
The wolf looked at the pile of bills carefully and regarded Robin's comment about law-breaking with a certain touch of grim humor, but he ultimately shrugged as Robin turned his back. "Ye, this'll cover it, alright. A pleasant day to you and Your Lordship."
"You too," Wildwing muttered under his breath before turning to join Robin as well. "Married into the job, huh? Sounds like you got pretty lucky."
He followed Robin along and witnessed him giving the young rabbit a message. "Seems like you run a pretty tight ship around here. Are scams like that," he gestured over his shoulder with a thumb, "usually a big problem for stuff like this?"
As for Robin's own question: "Nah, we're from Anaheim. It's on the Isle of the Pen right now, I think?" As he recalled, that was the general island area that they'd found themselves transported to, surrounded by other lands. It was hard to keep track of such things sometimes.
"We're a hockey team over there. We call ourselves the Ducks." He chuckled, gesturing to himself, his bill in particular. "For, uh, pretty obvious reasons."
He considered telling Robin about their other activities. He'd told Jack and Sally pretty quickly, true, but Robin was shrewd enough from what he'd seen, and maybe this wasn't the best place to openly talk about it.
Then again....maybe just a hint. "Tell me, what do you know about crime fighting?"
Post by Robin Hood on Oct 23, 2017 20:56:05 GMT -5
Robin was walking at ease, his arms at his side, taking in the festival as they passed with a contented smile. At Wildwing’s comment, Robin gave somewhat of an amused smirk. “Very lucky.” He had a hat with a hole in it to prove it. However, thinking of Marian, his smile softened. “My Lady is cousin to King Richard. I was born a lord but her status was still far above mine.”
Wildwing went on to ask about other scams like that the wolf was running. Robin shook his head and gestured with a thumb over his shoulder back the way they’d come. “Men like that used to run this town. Now things are very different. Some of them are very resistant to change.” Robin smiled and shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t expect any more problems from him. Not with a large rhinoscerous standing watch.”
While Wildwing explained a little more about himself, Robin tried to place the Isle of the Pen on the few maps he’d seen of greater Rohandor. “I have never been there, I’m afraid.” He had a vague idea of what Hockey was. “Is the rest of your team visiting the festival as well?”
At the mention of crime fighting, Robin’s ears perked forward on either side of his hat. He cocked his head to the side and glanced at Wildwing, wondering if he knew more about Robin’s past than he was letting on. It wasn’t exactly a secret. In fact, there would be a puppet show about it for the children later on. Still, something told Robin this wasn’t exactly the case. Robin had fought social injustices more than crime.
“Crime fighting you say?” He chuckled softly, tipping his hat at an elderly dog as they passed his stand. “Depending on who you ask— our friend the wolf, for example— some might tell you I was the greatest criminal in all of England.” Robin said this with another easy smile, imagining what Little John would have to say about that. “So I suppose I’m more familiar with avoiding arrest than fighting crime.”
".....yeah, that's pretty lucky," Wildwing said with a grin. "Glad things worked out for you."
The grin widened at Robin's further suggestions that the wolf wouldn't be running any cons for long. "A big burly guy tends to discourage that in my experience." A certain soft-spoken bruiser came to mind.
"Yeah, they're around somewhere. I don't keep a tight leash on them, and this is supposed be rest and relaxation for us anyway." He imagined most of them were having fun with food, games, or even science to a degree; he was pretty sure Tanya had expressed an interest in the types of medieval weapons they would have on display and for use during the games.
He watched Robin answer the question carefully. "That sounds like one of my friends," he said, thinking of Duke. "I think you'd like him."
Alright, he supposed he should come out with it. He sighed, putting his hands in his pockets. "My team and I....we don't just play sports. We're from another universe-long story, my manager can give you a recap if you ever come to visit-and we came here to stop an evil race called the Saurians from conquering the planet."
He looked at Robin dead in the eye. "And they're not the only ones. I'm hearing a lot of rumors that some bad people are looking to make their mark in Rohandor. And I think people should be prepared to stop them."
Post by Robin Hood on Oct 30, 2017 20:41:56 GMT -5
Robin could tell that there was something on Wildwing’s mind. The Duck was debating on whether or not to trust Robin with a secret. Robin kept a companionable silence and let his new friend make up his mind on his own. Then, with a sigh, Wildwing began.
The first part wasn’t so strange. Everyone seemed to be from a different world these days. However, as Wilding progressed to the conquering planets part, Robin couldn’t help but be skeptical. It was only the look on Wildwing’s face when he turned to look at Robin directly that stopped Robin from asking if this was some kind of joke.
Robin took a deep breath and let it out slowly, a serious frown on his face. The two of them had stopped walking and Robin looked around them, at his people enjoying the fair, while he gathered his thoughts.
“… I don’t know anything about Saurians… but the rest of it…” Robin clapped his hand on Wildwing’s shoulder and got him walking again. They were nearly to the shooting grounds now. While they walked, Robin continued. “The troubles in Nottingham had nothing to do with magic. A greedy prince taxed us nearly to starvation. Still… I’ve heard rumors. If one of those powerful witches came here…” Again Robin surveyed his home. “We’d have no way to defend ourselves. Not against something like that.”
They reached the archery grounds where a few archers were warming up. The stands were filled with spectators. A few of them saw Robin and waved. The fox waved back and smiled, despite the grave topic of conversation he and Wildwing were having.
Wildwing nodded in agreement. Bows and arrows could defend against quite a bit, but wood and metal wouldn't do much against the Saurians. And this place was centuries behind even the technology and defenses available in Anaheim. They wouldn't stand a chance if Dragaunus launched a full-scale assault.
And then there were these witches that Robin mentioned. He'd heard rumors of a "Vile Society", made up of powerful magic users inclined to evil, as well as a "Duke Igthorn" who commanded ogres, and it seemed that he was hardly the only one.
Between them and the Saurians.....an idea was starting to take hold in his mind, even more than it had previously.
"I think we should team up," he said as they reached the shooting grounds. "If the rumors I've been hearing too are true, then we're going to have a lot more active bad guys looking to hurt people. And if I know Dragaunus, he's going to want any allies that'll have him."
Granted, he was the back-stabber type, so any alliances would be temporary, but even those would be deeply dangerous.
He held out a hand to shake, roar of the crowd almost deafening his next words. "So what do you say? Partners?"
Post by Robin Hood on Nov 13, 2017 20:08:21 GMT -5
Robin watched Wildwing closely while he spoke, trying to judge his character. Wildwing was asking a lot, considering they had just met. In the old days, Robin may have leapt at the idea without a second thought… but now he had a township to govern and a wife.
Wildwing extended a hand to shake and Robin hesitated. He had more questions— the first among them to be what other members Wilding had recruited. However, before Robin could move to shake or speak, they were approached by an owl. The owl offered Robin a quiver of arrows and a longbow.
Robin took the quiver and swung it over his shoulder. Then he directed his voice to Wildwing. “Take a seat. This won’t take long.”
Bow in hand, Robin walked out onto the field. The locals all began to cheer and applaud. Robin waved good naturally, an easy grin on his face.
The Rooster, who was running the tournament, spoke in a loud, clear voice. “Welcome to the Summer Festival Archery Tournament! Please give a warm applause for this year’s contestants!” The dozen animals who were there to compete waved as the crowd cheered them on. While the rooster quickly explained the rules, Robin strung his bow and tested it’s pull. When the rooster gestured back to him, Robin was ready. “Now, to begin, Robin Hood will treat us all to an amazing sight indeed! A shot in which none other has been able to reproduce!”
Robin’s ears went askew for a moment as the applause again washed over him. He wondered if he’d ever get used to it. Deciding it would be best to have it over and done with, Robin stepped up and drew an arrow to his chin before letting it fly at the distant target, seemingly without taking the time to aim at all. The arrow struck true to the target’s center. Now, with more care, Robin drew a second arrow and pulled it back, his keen eye looking down its center. The crowd fell silent now, everyone holding their breath in expectation.
Robin let the arrow fly and a moment later came the dull ‘thock’ of it striking the target— except this arrow had split the first perfectly down the center. The split arrow wavered a moment and then fell to the ground.
The arena erupted in applause. Robin gave a grand, sweeping bow and walked back toward the stands. He handed off the bow and quiver, signaled for the rooster to begin the competition, and joined Wildwing in the stands.
