As many knew already the world had gone through a massive geographical transformation practically overnight, combining dozens of cities once thought fictional and rumors were common that the greatest villains of all these realms and cities had banded together to form an alliance of pure evil. There were some people that didn't let this interfere with their need to have some fun once in a while. In this case the protector of the jungle and king of the apes, Tarzan. As far as his daily patrol told him there was little if anything to interest criminal types in the jungles, other than a few poachers which Tarzan could handle easily. Sure he could have been off exploring some strange new lands but sometimes home just had everything you needed.
Quickly and effortlessly the ape man scaled the thick tree trunks, pushing aside the leaves and coming to a stop on a wider section of a branch to look over his destination. The area ahead was full of great climbing and swinging routes for beginners or experts. Best of all there was no risk thanks to a criss crossing series of strong yet spongy vines lower down acting as a natural safety net. Terk had shown Tarzan this place when they were growing up and the young human wanted to emulate his cousin, the best way to fit in with his adopted family as far as he knew. The only danger to the 'net' was the risk of getting tangled up in it like some kind of massive spider web, so the children made sure never to play alone or risk getting stranded for who knows how long. However if someone did get stuck they would likely only receive help on the whims of the playmate that was with them, usually the promise to scavenge a few meals or be 'it' in the next game. No harm done in any case.
Today Tarzan intended to introduce this area to the figure currently pursuing him. It had started off with a pretty uneventful patrol, checking with the other animal packs and explaining away the new strange thing they'd seen like 'boats' or 'aircraft'. Around mid day however Tarzan had picked up the sounds of someone following him, letting them get just close enough before he shot off into the Jungle.
"Not fast enough. Catch me if you can."
He waited until his 'predator' was reasonably close then jumped off the branch, swinging off a few more, hiding himself among the foliage and looking back to see if they managed to follow. A little practical lesson on trying to keep up with the man who had been doing this his whole life. Using his old proving grounds made him feel a little more at ease with being the prey, though not without a feeling of invincibility.
"You able to keep up or am I too fast for you?"
ooc: Needed a Tarzan post so an open thread seemed right. If anyone needs more to work with before they join in PM me.
Shan Yu had found himself traveling today and not with any particular destination in mind. Rohandor was a vast, unusual place with many hubs and cultures that he'd never encountered before. And, even beyond thoughts of conquest, they interested him. It was wise and instructive to know one's enemy before they attacked, but it was even to keep one's mind broad and well-learned.
You never knew when information might be useful in your life, after all.
Such as right now, he mused, as he found himself in the jungle chasing a strange half-naked man among the trees. The sight of the man had intrigued him, so he followed, attempting to remain as quiet as he could given his bulk.
That was not to last, it seemed, and the man noticed him, taking his interest as a challenge and opening up the floor to a chase.
Hayabusa was elsewhere at the moment (he could be a capricious bird when he wanted, but he always returned), but he swiftly moved through, climbing trees with less unnatural speed but a steady pace than the one he pursued.
The man taunted him as he disappeared into the foliage, but Shan Yu felt a strange smile sliding across his face. "Hardly," he intoned. "I haven't had a proper challenge like this in some time. You're quite skilled, jungle man."
Whoever the man was he was fast and agile, even with the armour he was wearing. Tarzan recognised the design from the history books he'd read, though he didn't know enough to make an exact guess at the origin it looked like his pursuer was from the far East. In a short time he'd made it up into the trees, though not as fast as the unencumbered Tarzan.
Growing up in the jungle had given Tarzan a whole different perspective when it came to meeting others. Some animals just wanted to make a meal out of you and wouldn't waste time with words before attacking. Humans were more complicated, hiding bad intentions behind kind words, but this man in armour gave the ape man a really bad feeling that caused him to start running in the first place.
He needed a weapon. His spears and stone daggers were back at camp and he couldn't lead this man back there in case Jane or the Professor got into any danger. For now he pulled up one of the hanging vines, slowly to not startle his opponent with the sudden movement.
He wanted to reply to the taunts, demand to know why he was being followed. This wasn't a game with Terk however, giving himself away could lead to injury or even death. For now he was going to keep quiet and see what this man in armour could do and what his intentions were. If Tarzan was lucky he might even fall into the vines and trap himself.
The man hadn't answered his taunts, and he could respect that in a number of ways. While he certainly enjoyed battles of wits should they happen, too often opponents could think they held the upper hand through wit and sarcasm alone. Such a thing could be easy to overcome should they not have any other skills, and it was often foolish to taunt without reason or purpose.
His own aim here had been to unsettle, and it seems that'd worked to a degree. Quiet now himself, he unsheathed his sword and started slicing through the thick vines and foliage that now presented themselves to him. It had seemed that the jungle man had thought these might slow him down, especially since he was more used to traveling among them.
Hardly. If there was anything that Shan Yu prided himself on, it was adaptability. "You know," he said, speaking again, "I'm honestly curious as to what you want, jungle man. Here I am, an intruder to your home, and all you've done so far is lead me on a chase. What do you get out of this?"
This too was more strategy rather than mere dry taunting. Knowing your enemy was key to crushing them.
After dragging in the vine Tarzan knotted the end into a lasso and coiled it around his arm. The armoured man had drawn a sword at this point and used it to clear a path for himself. The action reminded the ape man too much of his last fight with Clayton, how he'd strangled himself trying to slice at Tarzan while entangled. If he could Tarzan would like to avoid such a grizzly ending for this intruder.
For now he crawled underneath his branch, slowly climbing around to get the drop on his opponent. The man had started taunting him, accusing him of playing games rather than defending his home. A lot of insults were thrown at him over the course of his life, both from animals and humans, so Tarzan had to develop a thick skin and not retaliate without thinking no matter how angry it got him.
The sword looked nasty, a blade that weaved back and forth like a snake rather than the one sided blades other explorers had used to cut through the jungle. Seemingly it didn't matter what way the man in armour swung, he'd still be striking with a sharp edge. The sword had to go.
When Tarzan had circled the man and situated himself on another high branch he uncoiled the vine and hurled it the next time the armoured man readied another slice, landing the loop over the weapon and sliding it all the way down to the hilt before tightening it. Tarzan gave a sharp tug on the vine, both to test the hold and to let his opponent know that he would be in for a fall if he didn't let go.
Shan Yu let out a surprised cry as the vine curled and tightened around his weapon and his hand. He tried to move it, but felt a sharp yank on his arm, no doubt from the jungle man, before he even had a chance.
The man demanded in his deep voice to know who he was and what he was doing here. Well. He supposed he shouldn't disappoint.
"I am Shan Yu," he said first, "from the Land of Dragons." He was curious as to how much this man knew about affairs in the other realms of Rohandor; his exploits in China were rather infamous, after all. Perhaps he'd heard of him to some degree. And if he didn't know, well, he'd be all too pleased to tell this jungle man precisely who he was dealing with.
"As for what I'm doing here, I was.....bored. I've been traveling here and in other parts of this brave new world to test my mettle." An almost wicked grin. "And it appears that in you, I've found a worthy opponent at least."
He tried to take a step back or forward, but noticed that he was in a rather precarious position as it was. Best not to test things for the moment. "And yourself?"
Thankfully the armoured man didn't test the vine too much. Tarzan was only half sure he could hold his opponent given that he couldn't tell how much muscle he was concealing. For now though they both seemed content to stare each other down, though Tarzan dug in his heels just in case.
Shan Yu from the Isle of Dragons. Admittedly he didn't recognise the name, though apparently the Far East had a lot of history to go through. The books Jane and the Professor had apparently covered a few thousand years on the subject, so that was on the back burner on his studies.
"I am Tarzan, from this Jungle."
He didn't want to give any more information right away, especially with how Shan Yu was grinning at him. The implication that he wanted to fight for no reason. Maybe fighting was necessary at times, to defend others or to protect yourself from an animal that wanted to eat you. Even the minor brawls with Terk didn't really count as fighting, that was just a game.
"I won't fight you to test your metals." He gave the sword a wary glance. "You should leave the Jungle."
"Tarzan," Shan Yu repeated. An interesting name, that. One that spoke to strength. And he was from this jungle or at least identified as being part of such. "It's something of an honor and a....pleasure to meet a warrior like you, Tarzan."
This was not mere flattery, of course, even if his words were genuine to one degree or another. Tarzan the jungle man had immediately registered something of a dislike for him as soon as he'd expressed even a bare hint of what drove him to chase a stranger through an equally unfamiliar area. That meant he probably considered himself something of a hero.
And heroic types were always so much fun to play with.
He followed the look at the sword and Tarzan's comment. A smirk. Apparently there were some language issues here as well. "I'm afraid I meant something rather different," he said and with a sudden surge of strength and sharp movement of his arm, he BURST out of the vine's grip!
Now looking at Tarzan with a wider grin of triumph, he pointed with his sword. "How about we make a deal, jungle man: you give me a proper fight and I'll leave your home in peace."
Shan Yu wasn't taking no for an answer, he wanted a fight and made his terms clear that he wouldn't leave without one. At least he'd be focused on Tarzan, maybe he'd ignore the others dwelling in the jungle and any visitors coming in near the trading post. Any further thinking about trusting that he'd honour the deal he offered would have to wait at this point, the armoured man had already freed his arm and declared a beginning to the fight.
Tarzan wobbled on his branch as the vine suddenly went limp, but recovered quickly thanks to years of jumping through treetops with every distraction the jungle could offer. Shan Yu had strength and weapons, but he didn't have the ape man's knowledge of the area or experience with the trees, maybe that armour could even limit his speed costing him the advantage in agility also.
"The fight is over when someone touches the ground. Whoever stays in the trees wins."
It was an old gorilla traditions to decide the pack leader, one that Kerchek had emerged victorious from many times whenever someone younger thought they could take over. Eventually challengers dried up when they learned to respect the elder gorilla, but Terk and the other children of the gorillas made simpler versions of the challenge as a game, one with less risk of injury. Tarzan himself had won and lost his fair share of the game, so he had some idea of the tricks to look out for. Weak branches, loose vines and (though it was unlikely) Terk throwing fruit at a hanging opponent.
Tarzan made his first move by dropping to all fours and climbing under his own branch, scuttling away like a spider to escape Shan Yu's eyesight, switching branches and doubling back occasionally to keep his foe guessing.
Keeping the sword out, but moving it to a more guarding position, he watched Tarzan scuttle away with not just impressive speed and agility, but *creativity*.
It reminded him more than a little of the clever soldier who'd defeated him at the Emperor's palace. She was a brainy one for sure, and he always appreciated that in opponents.
Now moving himself, he ran into difficulty as he gripped a vine. He knew his own size and how to use it to his advantage, but a concern arose in his mind that the vine might snap in his beefy grasp.
Sheathing the sword for now, he grabbed multiple vines in both hands. That should work nicely, he thought.
And it did, taking him to the next branch as his eyes scanned them for Tarzan. No sign, but....
His ears perked as he heard the slightest, softest crack. Even someone who'd spent his entire life here could occasionally slip up to the law of averages.
He headed in the direction he'd heard the noise from, keeping his other senses in play. What could he smell, hear, possibly even taste to find this mysterious jungle man?
Tarzan kept thinking about the attributes of himself and his opponent over and over again, how strengths could also be weaknesses if looked at from another angle. Speed could be reduced by the available area to move, strength and weight could break the branches you relied on to keep you up, agility was useless with nowhere to jump to, weapons and armour could create dependency. There was a good chance that Shan Yu was aware of these factors as well, or at least it would be foolish to assume otherwise.
The ape man paused as a loose piece of bark cracked under his grip, causing him to freeze as he heard Shan Yu swing to a different branch. Several vines rocked back and forth in his eyesight, hinting that the armoured man require plenty of them to carry himself.
There were no taunts or threats, not like fighting Clayton. Even Sabor would growl occasionally, but this man kept silent so far. The only sign of his approach were his heavy footfalls from the topside of the branch. Tarzan kept still for a few moments longer, then reached one arm up to where he heard the last footstep. When he reached resistance he grabbed and pulled before letting go and dropping to the next branch below. With any luck he tripped Shan Yu if not caused him to lose balance.
Otherwise, Tarzan stayed crouched and ready to move fast in the likely event that blade came his way in response to his attack.
