Participating Characters:Gadget HackwrenchBasil of Baker Street Forum Location: Basil's Flat on Baker Street Time of Day: Evening Weather: Rain Thread Location: Basil's home under 221 Baker Street Premise: After foiling a sabotage plot at Goldmouse Studios, Basil invites Gadget Hackwrench to spend the night at Baker Street
The rain had picked up suddenly on the walk from the Ranger plane to the flat. Basil unlocked the front door as fast as he could and ushered his guest inside before she caught some malady from the elements.
"Welcome to Baker Street Miss Hackwrench, I can only apologise that we didn't arrive under better conditions."
The detective hung up his coat and deerstalker on a nearby coatrack before inviting Gadget into the main living area. After they solved a mystery together at a film studio that had set up on the Isle Basil had suggested that it would be better for her to get some rest before beginning her flight back to her own home, from what he could tell from his limited and harrowing trips in the Ranger plane it did not seem like the kind of transportation that one used when half asleep.
The flat hadn't changed much since Dawson had moved in. Shelves upon shelves of books on every subject that a detective and doctor required for their work, a series of desk used to set up the myriad of contraptions Basil devised for evidence analysis and a series of high backed chairs near a fireplace. A good sized flame was already warming up the room.
"Perhaps a spot of tea Miss Hackwrench?"
"Mister Basil? Is that you?"
The detective flinched as his landlady burst in suddenly. Wearing her usual blue dress and white apron, spectacles on the end of her nose and carrying a stack of pillows to replace ones previously damaged in ballistics tests (there would be words later). Since Dawson was away on other business Mrs Judson had taken extra precautions to check in on the medical wellbeing of her very stubborn tenant after every case he returned from. After setting down the pillows she stormed up to Basil and looked him over with narrowed eyes.
"You've taken a beating Basil."
"Not so much a beating as a few minor bumps Mrs Judson. Nothing to trouble yourself with. and besides, we have company. Mrs Judson this is Miss Gadget Hackwrench, a fellow investigator. Miss Hackwrench this is my landlady."
"Oh. Welcome dear. Goodness you must be freezing coming over in that weather. Hope Mister Basil isn't intending to drag you out on another of his cases this time of night. How about some tea? and some Cheddar crumpets?"
"Actually we'd just finished our work and I had invited the young lady to spend the night here...
Judson retrieved a spare robe, offering it to the visitor to warm up with should she require it, then whirled back on the detective, thrusting his violin and bow into his hands.
"Mrs Judson?"
"Just...play something." She grinned. "Since you're not injured."
Basil glared back, accepting the challenge and playing a short yet fast tune on the instrument to try and prove his fitness. His face remained neutral and deep in concentration as his landlady studied him for any sign of discomfort. His playing was as awkward as usual but he managed to complete the task demanded of him, smiling back at Mrs Judson as she glared in suspicion.
"See? Fit as a fiddle. Er, violin in this case. Now perhaps you could..could..."
Basil paused and turned his head as the rain had bought on a sudden violent sneeze, over which could be heard a slight cracking from the detective's arm and a short high note of pain.
"Sounds like a minor fracture again. I'll get a sling with the tea and crumpets. and some cold medicine. Miss Hackwrench I'm sorry to impose on you as our guest but if he tries to get back to work tonight would you kindly knock him out for his own good?"
Mrs Judson excused herself as Basil spent another few seconds frozen, wary of moving too fast and aggravating his injury further. Not that he was injured of course, or so he told himself. Eventually he drew up the fortitude needed to get into his chair.
"She means well of course but she's a little overprotective. Sling indeed..."

Gadget had managed to land the Ranger Wing in the bushes beside the building Basil had guided her to. There it would hopefully go unnoticed by any passing humans. Still, despite the relative proximity to his home, both mice weren’t able to quite out-run the coming storm.
While Basil hung up his coat and hat, Gadget quickly combed her fingers through her damp hair and adjusted her goggles. She gave a easy shrug and a grin. “I can’t blame you for the weather, can I?” Gadget passed thoughtfully, absently tapping at her chin. “Of course that’s not unheard of. Even Professor Nimnul managed to create a weather altering device.” Gadget’s eyes surveyed the room as she took a few steps away from the door. “But seeing as you’re not a mad scientist, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.” As she spoke, however, she spotted his chemistry set. She looked over her shoulder at him. “Or maybe I shouldn’t jump to conclusions.”
Gadget very much wanted to take a closer look at Basil’s work station, but before she could move that way a mouse burst in with a very large stack of pillows. Gadget had not expected to find anyone else living here with Basil— he certainly hadn’t mentioned anyone— but she quickly warmed to the older mouse as she began to fuss over Basil. Gadget covered her mouth with her hand to hide a smile as she watched the exchange.
“Nice to meet you! Tea sounds—“ A robe was pushed into her hands and Gadget had to stifle another laugh as a violin was given similar treatment with Basil. As Gadget watched, Basil was duly outmaneuvered by his landlady. It was expertly done. Mrs. Judson whisked herself back out of the room, a mouse on a mission, and Basil and Gadget were again alone.
Gadget looked up at Basil, both of them silent for a few beats, before Basil eventually grumbled a dismissive comment. Gadget laughed softly and pulled on the robe. It was meant for a taller mouse and dragged a little behind her. She would have to be careful not to trip on it.
“Do you have any requests on what I use to hit you over the head?” Gadget gave Basil a teasing grin. “For your own good?”
Gadget carefully took the violin from Basil and examined it. It was remarkably and beautifully made-- just like one a human would play but perfectly sized for a mouse. She shook her head in amazement. In her 'world' something like this would have been very difficult to come by. "I'll be honest... I thought it sounded great. Even with a minor fracture."

Basil briefly wondered if this Professor Nimmul had published any of his work, given that a weather control machine sounded like an amazing undertaking. Then it came out that he was a mad scientist and most likely didn't consider proper use of his inventions outside of his own criminal schemes. A most frustrating sub group of the scientific community.
Moral ramifications of new technology would have to wait though as Mrs Judson had burst through the flat in an unstoppable manner and managed to both be a good hostess while undercutting Basil's expert opinion on his own state of health. As she left to procure the tea and medical items Gadget made sure to tease him about the situation.
"I keep a ball peen hammer in my top desk drawer for experiments, that should be sufficient for Mrs Judsons specifications. Also you're very cruel and I hope that one day the tables are turned."
Teasing turned to compliments though as she complimented his violin playing, to which he handed over the instrument for her inspection.
"Thank you kindly. I use it to focus my thoughts when I've gathered and tested all the information available. I rarely play for an audience however."
"Except for that wedding party in the case of the vanishing groomsmen. Apparently his Mendelssohn’s Lieder brought the room to tears." Mrs Judson commented as she returned with a tea trolly and a small first aid box Dawson had left for emergencies. Basil reluctantly held his arm in place as she pinned a strip of fabric around his shoulder. "Now you keep that arm still Mister Basil, no experiments and no late night cases."
"No chances of that Mrs Judson now if you'll excuse me I think I hear the...I don't know, post man or something."
Basil ushered his landlady out the door before she embarrassed him further, then returned to the tea trolley and put out two cups.
"Please help yourself to some crumpets. Milk? Sugar? Lemon or honey?"
ooc: Sorry, this is terrible. If you need more to work with drop a PM and I'll add to it.

Basil suffered through Gadget’s teasing with as much grace as he could muster. Gadget covered her mouth with her hand, trying to stifle another laugh. She couldn’t help it. It wasn’t often that he was ruffled and uncomfortable. It made him more approachable and each time it happened Gadget felt herself grow more comfortable around him.
They’d started off as partners but she was sure they had become friends by the end of their first case.
Basil explained that the violin helped him focus, but Ms Judson interjected that he had, in fact, played for a wedding. Gadget raised her eyebrows, curious.
Ms. Judson wrapped up Basil’s arm with a practiced speed and Basil shooed her out of the room. He returned to the tea cart and stubbornly began to make two cups of tea using only one hand. Gadget got up and moved to help, picking up the tea kettle before Basil could.
“I’ll get the tea. Tell me about the vanishing groomsman?” Gadget gestured to Basil’s high-backed chair and went about making Basil a cup of tea (to his specifications regarding cream and sugar, of course). She handed him the cup and saucer before turning back to pour herself a cup.
Basil may insist that he was perfectly fine, but Gadget had seen the beating he’d taken at the studio first hand. She had to agree with Ms Judson— Basil should rest. At least for tonight.
With her tea in hand, Gadget settled into the other chair to listen.

Basil awkwardly looked back and forth between Gadget and the chair she was pointing out, hesitant to give up the role of host. Still his guest had the advantage of two working arms and could easily call Mrs Judson back if need be. For now he reluctantly backed down, took the offered cup and his seat.
"It was last spring. My partner Doctor Dawson and I were called in by the constabulary after several individuals were abducted from wedding receptions around London. The victims all turned up unharmed, but their formal clothing had been slashed to ribbons. No connection between any of the married couples involved, but it turned out that each of the groomsmen purchased their tuxedos from the same tailor shop. We went undercover at a few other weddings in various roles, caterers, members of the cloth and entertainers as you've heard....oh don't worry. I made sure to follow proper protocol before I officiated any weddings. Those couples got the union they expected."
Basil paused to take a sip of his tea. Miss Hackwrench had certainly gotten the ratios of the additives right, a sharp and precise mind despite the unnerving way she voiced her thoughts out loud in regards to her inventions and the potential dangers. and the lethal response to salesmen.
"We managed to interrupt several attempted abductions but it wasn't until the third, where Dawson acted as bartender during the reception and I was a hired violinist, that we apprehended the culprit. An unusual confrontation that was, he attempted to fight his way out wielding a cake knife. It turned out that he was an up and coming cat burglar that had recently stolen the Castafiore Emerald, but during his escape from the crime scene he attracted police attention and hid the prize in a roll of cloth being delivered to the tailors. He found out that the cloth was made into tuxedos and intended to search the buyers one by one until he retrieved the emerald. Turned out the whole thing was a wild goose chase. The tailor wasn't careless enough to sew a fist sized jewel into the clothing he made so he'd placed the item in the lost and found box in his shop until we told him what it was and returned it to the owner."
Basil paused as he felt another sneeze coming on, putting his cup arm aside out of reflex and using his wounded arm to stifle himself. The sneeze was followed by another high pitched yelp of pain before he attempted to restore some form of composure.
"Pardon me."
ooc: One IOU for a signed photo of my ugly mug to anyone who can name the Sherlock Holmes story that inspired the case of the Vanishing groomsmen.
