Princess Anna was halfway through trying to look especially innocent when she noticed the crumbs speckling her skirt. Hurriedly, she reached down and flapped the fabric, sending the evidence cascading down to the polished wooden floor of the entrance hall. Anna winced, recalling that the staff had just cleaned them that morning. To alleviate some guilt, the young woman reached down, looking around cautiously as she did, and pulled up the corner of one of the running rugs. With one foot she kicked the crumbs beneath them, then straightened quickly and began humming a nonchalant tune just when two guards marched into the hall at her back.
Anna flashed them a quick smile and salute, then jogged towards the grand stair. They were still recovering from their bow when she was bouncing up them.
The castle chef wouldn't have been too pleased to discover that Anna had sneaked into the kitchen and stolen one of the freshly made tarts that were supposed to be for dinner. He couldn't (or... wouldn't... one of the two) tell her off properly - being the princess did have its perks. The head chef did have a way of making Anna regret her mischief, though. Mostly in the way of not making her favorites, or anything truly tasty for a while afterwards. Beings that he'd also explicitly told her not to steal the tarts that she just had, Anna wasn't keen on being discovered.
Now that all of the proof had been disposed of, Anna was looking for Elsa. She was still debating whether or not to tell her older sister of the little bit of fun she'd just had - Anna could never tell whether or not Elsa would be amused or cross. Once on the second floor, she went first to Elsa's room, but no one was there. From chamber to chamber Anna wandered until finally she stopped before the double doors to the royal library. She slipped inside and stopped once over the threshold, surprised by what she saw.
Elsa was seated at one of the tables. Piles of books were around her, like she was studying for a test from their tutor. Anna blinked, then fit a lopsided, teasing smile on her lips. "Bit of light reading, eh?" she asked. What the princess didn't know was that the red fruit filling from the tart she'd just ate was smeared rather obviously at one corner of her mouth.

“I wish I knew what I was looking for,” Elsa muttered to herself. Even though she spoke quietly she could hear her voice quite distinctly in the silent library. It was oddly muffled as if the towering ceilings were too far away for the sound of her speaking to properly reverberate off the elegantly designed walls and beams high above. Every page she turned crinkled and fluttered with a similar feel and cut rather sharply through the silence.
Silence was something Elsa was used to. Certainly there were times when her parents would come visit- Anna too, before she’d stopped knocking- or she’d hear the townsfolk moving around outside or children playing. More often than not, though, she spent her time alone with her thoughts quietly listening to the birds and other odds sounds of the creaking castle. It felt familiar and comfortable.
What did not feel familiar or comfortable was sitting in the library. After you'd spent three fourths of your life cooped up in your room and unable to leave it, the freedom to go wherever you'd like was almost stifling. Elsa would glance up from her studies every now and again and scan the empty room warily as though someone might come and tell her she couldn't be in there, or that she should be in her room. Of course that was a ridiculous notion considering she was the queen which ultimately meant that there was no one anywhere in the kingdom that could tell her what to do and that was frightening and exhilarating all at the same time.
But Elsa wasn't thinking about that just then. Just then, she was trying to find some answers for the pile of questions she had that was still growing rapidly. I know where we have to go. How? How did he know? She very vividly remembered her father collecting a thick red tome before she and her sister had been spirited away into the night. Where was it? What was in it? Nothing she'd found so far had been even remotely helpful. Her father, though she loved him so very much, had always insisted she try to suppress her abilities rather than learn exactly how they worked which lead her to believe he'd hidden or disposed of the books containing information on her powers.
At the sound of Anna's voice Elsa flinched, so much so that she almost actually jumped out of her chair she was so startled. "Anna." She said as if to reassure herself that it wasn't some horrible monster or angry mob come to lynch her and felt strangely relieved. "I didn't hear you come in." Oddly enough, she added silently. "Yeah..." She responded to her sister's question as she leaned back in the chair, crossed one arm across her body and pinched the bridge of her nose with the other. She sighed. "I just, I was looking for... something." It wasn't that she didn't want to elaborate, she just didn't know what she was looking for.
She dropped her arms and placed them on the table in front of her before glancing over at Anna and really getting a good look at her. Elsa presented her sister a weary smile, "Did you just decide to save time and put your whole face in the bowl of filling this time?" She reached up a hand and swiped a finger gently along the side of her own mouth that mirrored where the incriminating red filling was smeared across Anna's face.
Anna was either still too content with her victory over the cook, or not perceptive enough to rightly notice just how startled Elsa was when she gave her greeting. Likely a combination of both. She pursed her lips. Her brow furrowed gently in the thought that Elsa's comment inspired in her; unknowingly the same, or similar to the Queen's own. "That's weird," Anna said, vaguely dismissive, while she looked distantly interested at her own fingers. "I can't usually sneak up on people." The way that the princess said it was as though she had no idea why that may be the case. Anna was usually pretty aware of her verbose eccentricities, but sometimes she was relatively clueless.
Elsa went on to counter the princess' original statement and Anna shifted her focus back to her sister, blinking thoughtfully. Only then, as Elsa appeared at a loss for what to say and then tentatively apprehensive about what she was going to did Anna really begin to realize how bizarre the scene she'd walked in on was. Elsa was definitely the bigger reader between the two of them, but this was extreme by anyone's measure; obsessive even. Anna's expression creased in less innocent and more deliberate thought while she watched Elsa lamely formulate a response.
Obviously whatever was happening, whatever Elsa was looking for was important and made her feel less than inclined to be honest with Anna. That intrigued the princess, surely but it also sobered her heart. She wouldn't budge or pry; or she'd try not to. Anna liked to think that she had become very good at not being nosy during her and Elsa's estranged upbringing. Yet Anna did notice that since their reunion and Elsa's ascension to the throne she had been overbearing at times like she was trying to make up for lost time. Sometimes that enthusiasm crossed over the threshold of Elsa's personal boundaries or patience, both of which were still quietly growing after a lifetime of solitude and fear.
During this particular instance Anna had the forethought to attempt to wrest control over herself before she went too far. Whether or not her attempt would hold once things got going, or curiosity grew more powerful in her was to be seen. Anna smoothly changed her deeply considering look into one of nonchalance while she ambled absently to the ring of books piled around Elsa at her central table. Anna's casual air was on the verge of looking smug as she slipped her bottom onto a narrow strip of clear wood at the edge of the table. Her back went rigid, her eyes wide as she was caught.
Several rapid blinks later and Anna forced the casual attitude from before back into affect; though this time it was much more awkwardly in place. With one finger she brushed the bit of filling off of the corner of her mouth and sucked it off the digit. "I have no idea what you're talking about." With that taken care of she slowly looked over to Elsa and couldn't help but appear a slight bit mischievous in the feigned innocent way she asked, "So whatcha' lookin' for, exactly?"

Life's too short to never let you see who I am, the queen of the ice and snow.

The curve of Elsa’s lips slowly faded back into a rather stern line as the amusement at her sister’s antics was replaced once more by her growing apprehension. She placed her hands on her lower back and arched her spine slightly to stretch her shoulders and back, feeling it crackle slightly. It felt good and served as a welcome reminder that no matter how different she might be from the others in her kingdom, she was still mortal just as anyone else. Given her recent circumstances however, being reminded of her mortality also served to motivate her search.
“I’m… not sure exactly.” Elsa admitted raising her eyes to her sister’s face. As much as she knew what she was hoping to find, she had no idea what paths she would need to traverse in order to get her there. “I just feel like I need to try and learn all I can about my powers.” She turned her palms towards her face and looked at her hands as she had done so many times before, “I’ve spent so much of my life trying to hide and suppress them that I don’t really know how they actually work.”
Elsa sighed and dropped her hands back to the table, looking over at her sister. She felt a pit in her stomach even now. Anna was lucky to be alive, no thanks to her. She’d nearly killed the person she loved most in all the world not once, but twice. The first time she had panicked hit Anna in the eye due to her lack of experience. The second time her powers had worked of their own accord shooting ice out around her, hitting Anna in the heart. Both times had been accidents, certainly, but ultimately it came down to inexperience and not understanding how her abilities worked.
“Just because I managed to thaw out the kingdom this time doesn’t mean I have any better control than I had before. What happens the next time I get angry? Or frightened? Our people have accepted me for now but how long will that last? Especially if I have another …episode.” Reaching out, Elsa closed the unhelpful book in front of her and ran her hand across the cover. “The trolls told me that I needed to learn to control my powers and I intend to do just that.”
Honest to goodness, Anna had been expecting Elsa to avoid the question. Try to smoothly disregard it and move on to other things that would distract her younger sister. Anna wouldn't have given up there, of course. Depending on how great her intrigue had been sparked, the princess might have struggled a little before ultimately giving in to Elsa's wishes. Imagine her surprise, then, when she didn't see the cornered look in her big sis that usually came about before Elsa sidestepped an issue. Anna's mischief turned to wide-eyed and pleasant surprise when the queen actually started to address the inquiry.
Anna tilted her head as Elsa told that she didn't know, exactly, what it was that she was looking for. She listened intently, kicking her legs back and forth over the edge of the table absently while she sat on her hands. Elsa sounded like she was trying to say something that had the potential to strike her strongly emotionally in a matter-of-fact way. Anna watched her carefully, not even knowing herself that she had just adopted a very protective attitude toward Elsa. What kind of sister was she if she couldn't be there for Elsa when things were troubling? Anna's heartbeat began to flutter as the queen became gradually more intense.
The princess listened, and she struggled with her impulses to do nothing more for a while. Anna reflected upon how she constantly felt naive or childish in comparison to Elsa. The princess hadn't thought once about any of the quarrels that Elsa was describing. Anna... Well, she didn't rightly know what she'd been thinking. Since Elsa banished the eternal winter she'd accidentally conjured and the people had accepted her, powers and all, Anna thought that these kinds of unknowns were in the past. Wrapped up with a pleasant "happily ever after". But they weren't, were they?
Anna had more faith in her sister than she did in the rising of the sun. But their adventures previously had shown the princess that her own faith couldn't provide a cure-all for the tribulations that Elsa experienced. If Elsa felt like she needed to learn more about her powers, then Anna was behind her. It made sense, really, and once again Anna felt very foolish for having dropped at once into her daydreams in the aftermath of their story. While Elsa appeared lost in verbalizing her thoughts, Anna slid off of the table and moved around to her. Once she'd finished, Anna bent over and gently furled a firm embrace around her sister. She didn't care if Elsa would have preferred otherwise. This was a moment of selfishness for her.
Once the hug was over with, Anna leaned back again. Her face was sincere and bright, but reserved. "I get it," Anna said with a shrug. She felt that reassuring Elsa that this desire was entirely reasonable, and necessary may be a good thing. Even if Elsa could have done without confirmation. "So we'll both have to search until we find the answers is all." Her smile brightened. Anna's contentedness with this moment was upset as a thought struck her. "Hey..." she thought back on what Elsa had just said a moment ago after closing the book she'd been perusing. "Trolls..." Anna muttered. With an air of epiphany she grew in volume. "The trolls!" she looked eagerly at Elsa.

The hug was unexpected but not completely unwelcome. Elsa let Anna wrap her in a hug and she in turn put her arms around her baby sister. It was still taking some used to, that human contact. It was an odd contradiction the way Elsa craved the presence and touch of others and yet still shied away from it. There was still some deep-seated feeling that she was doing something wrong.
It wasn’t instinct just then that prevented her from losing herself in the warmth and comfort of her sister’s gesture however, her thoughts were just too confused and frustrated. She looked up into the face of her sister as she assured her she ‘got it.’ While Elsa didn’t think she could possibly understand anything she was going through she opted to keep her mouth shut and let her sister who she’d nearly killed twice finish her thoughts.
She started to give her a warm smile and thank her for her offer of assistance, ready to tell her that she didn’t have to. That it was her problem but she was stopped mid thought. Elsa raised an eyebrow before speaking carefully, “Yes. The trolls. What about them?” They’d told her that she needed to learn to control her powers. ...could it really be that simple? Was the answer so glaringly obvious it was just staring her in the face?
That Anna had a tendency to get swept up in things was not a well-guarded secret.
Elsa's mention of the trolls had planted the idea in her head and it grew swiftly. It made sense, after all, now that Anna thought about it. The trolls seemed to know an awful lot that they really shouldn't. Particularly Grand Pabbie. Getting so excited over the possibility was, probably, not the best route to go, however. Belatedly Anna realized this. Optimism was one of her strongest traits. Yet she knew that it could get tiresome to others. Some small part of her pointed out that just because the trolls could have something worthwhile to contribute to Elsa's cause didn't mean they would.
Putting unceasing faith in this, the first course of action that presented itself to help her sister with her problem, was her instinctive reaction. Anna caught herself though. She was trying very hard of late to be more reasonable and less naive. That Anna was naive she was not unaware. The fact that Hans had so easily manipulated her the exact way that he wished was evidence enough of it. Anna liked to believe that her and Elsa's quest to end winter had helped her, if not put an end to that naivety, at least make her realize that it was there and something she needed to work on.
The prospect of being ignorant, mislead and directed as others would want her did not sit well with Princess Anna.
Once upon a time, not a handful of months ago, she would have clung to this idea that the trolls would have the answers without relenting. Now Anna liked to think she knew a little better. She understood that this was a good idea. Probably a decent first step. But she couldn't expect everything to be put to rights with one act. Like she had thought that just retrieving Elsa from the North Mountain would abolish winter and everything would be fine again. Anna had grown insomuch as she was now aware that life wasn't so simple. Even if she thought it should be.
Anna strove to check herself. To hold her enthusiasm at bay. To inject practicality into her idea. Elsa probed for her to continue in her train of thought and Anna could detect the glimmer of hope that her older sister was possibly too good (again, too simple) to believe. "Well- I mean-" Anna folded her arms over her chest and used one hand to gesture as she spoke. She seemed to be trying to think of her words carefully. "The trolls sort of have a habit of knowing things. Or Grand Pabbie, at least. The others sort of seem... Lazy? I don't know. Anyway! Grand Pabbie's known quite a bit about your powers so far. Makes sense that he could at least put us-" Anna paused and bit her lip. She wanted to be there for Elsa in this. She would be. But Anna couldn't help but feel like this was important to her older sister. "You," she amended softly, "on the right track."

Anna seemed to be thinking so hard about her answer that for a few moments Elsa feared Anna's head might actually explode. Even as she thought she might try to interject something to keep her sister from doing irreversible harm to herself, the younger girl visibly seemed to collect herself and keep herself focused, choosing careful words. It was a sign that everything they had been through lately had left a changed mark on both of them. While Elsa couldn't help but be proud that her sister was trying to a little more grounded about things, she couldn't help but feel some loss. In some ways Anna was the living embodiment of the innocence and childhood that had been denied her and to watch it slip away and mature felt like losing it all over again.
Anna's words put voice to a very logical conclusion that she supposed she would have arrived at eventually but for whatever reason her sister had expedited the process. Elsa hunched over the table then, resting her weight on her forearms and folding her hands as she considered this. Listen to me Elsa, your power will only grow. There is beauty in it but also great danger. You must learn to control it. Fear will be your enemy. Did he mean that he was going to help her control it?
She tried not to be hurt or angry with her father. She truly believed he loved her and had done what he thought was best for her. The idea that he might have hidden her away out of his own fear was something she could not and would not bring herself to consider for an avalanche of reasons. She wondered what would have happened if that had been true- that the Grand Pabbie would have helped her learn control. Maybe everything would have been different. Maybe her parents would still be alive. It was an unfounded and irrational hope but something that plagued her nonetheless.
Born with the powers or cursed? The way he spoke it was like he knew exactly what was going to happen. Like he'd encountered powers like hers before. Maybe he would know. She abruptly made a decision and stood up in the same way. "You're right," She told Anna, "I've got to go talk to them." She was getting nowhere with these books and until she could find the one her father had been looking through the fist time she and Anna had visited the trolls she was wasting her time.
Anna's idea had an immediate response in Elsa. The queen seemed stunned for a moment and then a great weight settled on her. Anna watched as that metaphorical pressure bowed Elsa over the table she'd been seated at. She could see her sister's blue eyes nearly crackling with the speed of the thoughts that had taken hold of her. Anna fidgeted in the meantime, bringing her hands up in front of her, massaging the palm of one with the thumb of the other. She thought that she could make a good guess at what kind of ultimate reaction Elsa would have to her suggestion, but she was still somewhat uncertain.
Abruptly enough to make Anna flinch slightly, Elsa straightened. The atmosphere changed in the room from contemplative and deeply thoughtful to expedient and determined. Anna's eyes had widened at the sudden movement of her sister, but her own kind of glad resolve manifested in the princess when she heard what the queen had to say. There was a large part of Anna that desired to, in that very instant, call for her and Elsa's horses so that they could ride to the Valley of the Living Rock and see what could be unearthed together. Her mouth opened to suggest just that when practicality struck her.
Elsa did need Anna in this time of soul searching. But, at least in this specific moment, not in the way that the princess most readily wanted. Anna's demeanor softened, but did not lose any of its kindness. She reached out a hand in a gesture for Elsa to clasp it in one of her own. As they moved toward the exit of the library, Anna began speaking, voicing the realizations that she'd made by herself, and her own resolution to do what her sister needed of her. "Kristoff and Sven can take you to the trolls," Anna explained. "Someone needs to stay here and watch over Arendelle in the meantime." The princess looked sidelong at Elsa and grinned, just partially mischievous. "I'll try not to let the power go to my head, but don't be surprised if you return to a newly-christened "Annadelle", mmkay?"

In her mind, Elsa was already making preparations to leave. Her desire to discover the origin and solve the mystery of her ice abilities had been swelling inside her so much so that she feared her heart might burst. After everything that had happened lately, both with her own power mishap as well as her kingdom's shifted reality, she felt it was her responsibility not only to herself but to her people to try and offer answers to some of their unspoken questions.
Anna's words broke through her frenzied thoughts, causing her mind to halt and return to the present. "Kristoff?" She looked at her sister blankly for a moment. Yes, of course that made the most sense. Kristoff should take her. He would be able to guide her swiftly and safely through the mountains to where his home was. That was the most sensible course of action she supposed.
She looked at her sister and felt a smile curling her lips. Anna had been trying so hard to be responsible and to behave like the princess she was. Elsa was so proud of her and the woman she was becoming. She knew their parents would have been proud too.
Elsa's smile faded a little, "Yes, I suppose he would be the wisest choice to take me." She agreed, "But while Annadelle does ring rather nicely, I had thought... you might come with me." Elsa felt silly, even embarrassed mentioning that she wanted her sister to go. Like a child asking for a parents help after insisting they didn't need help. Maybe it was because she'd forced herself to remain in solitude most of her life that made her feel that way. But for whatever reason she thought Anna should be there if the trolls knew anything.
But then again, maybe it was better that she wasn't.
(OOC: If you want Anna to come with we can figure something out. Otherwise I can have Elsa go with Kristoff if Christy is up for the thread and then Anna can come with Elsa for whatever the next leg of the adventure is. Let me know what you think!)
Elsa sounded taken aback by Anna's proposed course of action. The princess glanced at her sister, a thoughtfulness in her blue eyes, even if her small, kind smile was not shaken. She wondered if Elsa's surprise was simply a product of Anna tearing her from her thoughts, or at the nature of the suggested plan itself. Anna knew that on the surface Elsa and Kristoff might appear complete opposites; Elsa was the most elegant, composed person she knew, while Kristoff... Well, he wasn't. Anna loved them both dearly for each thing that made them individuals, but she knew that there were integral traits that they shared, too.
The thought of Elsa on a quest with Kristoff nearly made her giggle, but Anna suppressed it. Both of them, she thought, would probably be uncomfortable at the simple idea of spending time alone together, when Anna was usually present to bridge the two more pleasantly. Anna thought that Kristoff was intimidated by Elsa - which, while the princess thought it silly, could understand, intellectually. Meanwhile, by Anna's opinion, Elsa didn't really know how to deal with Kristoff. Even if Anna pretended like nothing whatsoever was anything more than comfortable between them. Admittedly, in the moment she usually was exuberantly unaware of anything less. Only careful retrospection let her formulate her more astute opinions on the two and their correlation.
After Elsa's moment of pause, the queen said something that made it Anna's turn to be caught unawares. The princess blinked several times quickly, looking a little stunned, then a crooked, content smile plucked one corner of her mouth. Anna slid her hand that was in Elsa's so that their arms were linked and she pressed her shoulder against her sisters gently. "I want to come," Anna said earnestly. "More than anything but..." Now she sighed softly and looked with feigned exhaustion at Elsa. Then, with a shift toward the pointedly dramatic, Anna turned her chin upwards gestured grandly and sniffed in mock disdain, "Duty calls."
Anna nudged Elsa. "It's only fair that I have to do the boring parts occasionally. Besides, it'll give you and Kristoff a chance to complain about me behind my back." She wrinkled her nose teasingly.

Elsa wrapped Anna up in a hug and tried not to let the unshed tears that were causing her eyes to shine to escape. She blinked them back before releasing her sister. "You've grown up so much even just in these last few days." She said both immeasurably proud of her younger sibling and immensely sad for the time they had lost. Over a decade had passed since she'd firmly closed the door between herself and Anna in her attempt to keep her safe. There were so many adventures they could have had growing up that they'd never again have the chance for. It pained her to think of all the experiences denied them.
"You're right of course," She regained her composure though she was certain most of her inner turmoil had been kept off her face. If there was one thing Elsa excelled at, it was concealing and suppressing her feelings. "We both shouldn't run off on some quest that may prove to be nothing more than a waste of time." It wouldn't be though. Whether she was thinking with the hopeful part of her mind or that some secret part of her knew that the trolls could have told her more if only she hadn't been too frightened to ask all those years ago, she couldn't say.
"I don't want to make a big deal about me leaving." She said more to herself than to Anna, "I want a quick trip to the Valley of Living Rock and back again. I can't imagine it taking more than a few hours." The last thing their kingdom needed was to think the queen was running out on them again. Also if she made a big to do about leaving taking an entourage and guards, she felt like they would become more of a target. Just herself and Kristoff would be better able to slip out and back in again without much notice. And it wasn't as though Elsa wasn't able to defend both of them.
Elsa started to ask if Anna was sure she was going to be all right without her but then realized how foolish it sounded. Not only had she been without her for so long up til now, but she had proven herself more than capable of handling herself. Instead she slipped her arm through her sister's and made her way out of the library. "Come on. I going to change into something less conspicuous and you need to go find Kristoff. And maybe wash your face." She added, teasing fondly.
