Xanatos counted down the last few minutes. He'd chosen to arrive at a very precise time just before sundown. Any later and the target of his attentions would have departed before he could get a word in. The CEO was currently on the tower of Castle Wyvern just before the nocturnal defenders were due to emerge from their stone sleep, the wise Hudson, curious Angela, loyal Bronx, the younger warriors Lexington and Broadway, second in command Brooklyn and their leader Goliath.
Given the considerable gallery of rogues who had it out for the Clan, Xanatos had put together a lot of day and night security to protect them while they were in their defenseless state. Fast response teams with state of the art weapons and helicopters (plus absurdly thorough background checks), guided by the best surveillance and monitoring equipment all over the castle. As an unintended but useful side effect there was little that went on in the building without Xanatos knowing about it, which led him to this situation.
Goliath and Detective Maza had met recently and exchanged some tense words. They had been close friends since the clan were revived in modern day Manhattan, in fact the detective had exposed Xanatos less than noble intentions to Goliath, since then they had grown closer than that. Goliath had asked her if it would make things easier if he sought out a way to make himself human, or at least gain a human transformation like Demona had been 'cursed' with by Puck. With Oberon's Children and their 'gifts' this was risky enough, but in Rohandor there was no end of magical entities, individuals and groups that could not only help him but dangle it in front of him for the rest of his long or short life depending on how they dealt. As a friend, he didn't want Goliath to risk his life or freedom, as a father he didn't want any of the many villains of the world to potentially gain control over the Clan who he trusted with his son.
Fox had decided to meet with Elisa earlier, so Xanatos decided to talk with the other half of the troubled couple. He was under no illusion that Goliath would take relationship advice from his old nemesis (surprising since Xanatos was married to the best woman in the world), but at the very least he could offer his years of business experience so that the Clan leader could find the best negotiation position to get what he wanted.
The sun dropped over the horizon. The stone figures started cracking, beginning with blazing white eyes. Xanatos stood casually as they burst from their stoneskin and roared as was their custom. As soon as they finished Xanatos walked towards the leader and held up one of a pair of cups he was carrying.
"Latte? Thought I should bring something to make sure you're refreshed before we discuss things."

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Aug 29, 2014 23:56:26 GMT -5
The stone sleep was supposed to be one of rest and rejuvenation, but there were times that the dreams served to make one feel more ... lethargic, upon waking. Of course, it was generally a trick of the mind; once the gargoyle shook off the remnants of the slumber, he would be as good as new. That was the point of the stone sleep, after all.
Once Elisa had left the previous night, Goliath had gone to patrol the city, ever watchful, ever aware of the dangers his protectorate faced, from without as well as within, now. Even during his patrol, though, he'd been distracted, thoughts of his conversation with Elisa filling his head.
What was he going to do? She'd said that magic wasn't the answer, but the more he thought about it, the more it seemed that it was possibly their only answer. Goliath was stubborn; he wasn't going to let this go without looking into it a bit more.
The patrol had proved relatively uneventful; there were a few minor crimes that he and the clan had stopped, but the bigger issues had seemingly ... stopped, for the moment. Which was potentially worrying. Were the larger crime bosses planning on working for the villains that had been trapped in the Forever Stone? Or were they simply trying to escape a similar fate?
Either way, it didn't much matter; Goliath and the clan dealt with what they could. Morning had arrived quickly; he'd been so distracted by his thoughts and patrolling that he hadn't really noticed the length of the evening.
Goliath's dreams during the stone sleep were of the possibilities that could be had through his choice. He and Elisa...were together, truly together. He was able to meet all of her family, to meet her friends, her co-workers. And the children. Even in slumber as he was, Goliath could feel his heart swell at the very idea of being able to have children with Elisa.
Even as he was dreaming, he could feel the night approaching and, for once, he didn't want the stone sleep to end. He could stay wrapped in his pretense for quite some time. But it still wouldn't be true, wouldn't be like having a flesh-and-blood Elisa by his side.
The sun set and the stone encasing the Gargoyles began to crack. Goliath burst forth from his own stone cocoon with a roar, eyes flashing white.
Even as he stretched his wings, Goliath was looking around, taking in the sights, the sounds, the smells of the night. He noticed right away that Xanatos had been waiting for him and he frowned. What could it be that Xanatos had chosen this night to choose to talk to him? Elisa was supposed to be coming tonight, after all, and Goliath didn't want to miss her.
"Brooklyn, you will take command of the patrol tonight," he commanded the younger gargoyle, stepping to the side to talk to Xanatos.
Goliath ignored the latte, folding his arms over his chest even as his wings remained unfurled.
"What is it you want, Xanatos?" He would be civil, for now; Xanatos was their host, after all, but he still didn't trust the human.

The awakening was always a spectacular display, especially given that the Gargoyles could go from a petrified state to fully awake in a matter of moments, but Xanatos had seen it enough times that it had become pretty casual. Though there was the advantage of having a quickly replenished supply of stoneskin fragments to gather every night, they were a potent resource in various magic circles (of course Xanatos made sure to keep a proper check on who his company was selling to).
Goliath looked less than impressed to see David waiting for him and quickly sent the rest of the clan on their way. It was understandable considering their previous animosity, beginning with Xanatos and Demona tricking them into stealing from several rival companies to aid in the construction of the Steel Clan and branching into various other schemes along the years. David had usually managed to keep one step ahead of the law except for a minor charge of receiving stolen goods and planned things so that even if he lost he was profiting in some shape or form. He'd tried to mend things though, the younger clan members were fond of Alexander and he'd had words with Angela a while back when she expressed interest in one of David's many combat classes. Perhaps Goliath would benefit from some other kind of instructor to help him lighten up, Tai Chi, painting or Origami perhaps?
Seeing that his peace offering wasn't accepted right away, Xanatos placed one of the cups on the castle wall and took a sip from his own. Goliath seemed in no mood and it would be best to choose his words wisely.
"It's about you and Detective Maza. I want to make sure you, and don't take this the wrong way Goliath, aren't going to do anything you'll regret."

There could be any number of reasons for why Xanatos wanted to talk to him before patrol, but whatever it was, Goliath knew he wasn't going to like it. Though he'd come with a 'peace offering,' as he was sure to term it, Goliath knew the billionaire well enough to know that this conversation was not going to be pleasant. Xanatos would have his own reasons for asking any questions, and Goliath didn't trust the man as far as he could throw him. Which was rather far, considering.
Sure enough, as Xanatos spoke, Goliath's eyes narrowed. He unfolded his arms, taloned hands clenching into fists. How dare he presume to know what was going on between himself and Elisa? He knew nothing of the struggle through which Goliath was agonizing, wanting to do the right thing by Elisa, but also wanting a chance at happiness.
"And what exactly do you mean by that?" he asked, eyeing the human with distaste. Come to think of it, how had Xanatos known what he and Elisa had been discussing the previous night? He supposed he really shouldn't be surprised, though; they were currently staying in Xanatos' home and Goliath knew from experience that he had multiple surveillance systems in place.
Come to think of it, though, why should any of that concern him? It wasn't as though he had any stake in the Gargoyles, now. Well, not really. He was housing them, but beyond that, Goliath had warned the clan, once more, about his treachery. Xanatos was not a man to be trusted, no matter how much the rest of his clan might enjoy little Alexander, himself included.
"What concern is it of yours anyway, Xanatos?" Goliath queried, caping his wings over him for the moment. Whatever he had in mind, it certainly wouldn't be altruism that made him approach the Gargoyle.
Post by David Xanatos on Oct 5, 2014 16:52:08 GMT -5
"There's that famous temper of yours. Just hear me out before you do something rash and embarrass yourself."
David couldn't help poking the bear a little, relying on Goliath's strong moral code winning out over any desire he had to put his head through the nearest wall. Though come to think of it he would be more upset by damaging the castle than the owner.
"My concern is that a good friend of mine is clearly in love. He wants to make things more, pardon the phrase, normal so that a relationship between the two of them would be easier. What he wants doesn't come easy and while there are a lot of people in this new world that could give it to him, he may be too hasty in taking it before thinking about the cost. Everything has a price Goliath. Take it from someone who weighs the cost of everything he seeks."
Xanatos wasn't the most romantic person despite considering his family life. His proposal, while full of reasons that Fox was the perfect woman, would be considered somewhat blunt and overly analytical by others, lacking in passion. It would be hard to convince Goliath using any example from Xanatos life, which is why he'd looked over some files from his research teams on the history of the other Isles and Kingdoms.
"Have you ever heard of Hercules? Son of the Olympus Gods. No relation to the New Olympians but similar. He was in love, then he found out the target of his affection was the hostage of a dark God. To secure her release he agreed to give up his Olympian strength for one day. Permanent freedom against one day without his abilities, too good to be true right?." David made weighing scale motions with his hands. "After Hercules agreed God raised an army of Titans to conquer Olympus a few hours later. Only blind luck saved them."
Goliath wasn't a fool and Xanatos knew that all too well, but emotions had a way of messing with your head and making you rush into things. Lexington wanted to befriend humans so badly that he fell for a trap by the Pack, Brooklyn handed the Grimoir Arcanium over to Demona trying to mend fences and Broadway's excitement about modern films caused Elisa a near fatal injury when he tried to play with a loaded weapon. The last thing anyone needed was for the clan leader to go for a quick and easy deal for love without considering the long game. Goliath had taken on the power of Odin, freed Puck from Demona's control rather than making his own demands of the trickster and protected a city that was still struggling to accept him. This situation with Detective Maza was different however.
"We'd both do anything for our loved ones Goliath. I'd like to have a clearer idea of what you're planning."

The Gargoyle was hard-pressed to keep from lashing out at Xanatos over the man's words, but he'd been around the billionaire enough to know that that was exactly what Xanatos wanted. He wanted to get Goliath riled up so that he would do something rash.
Instead of reacting to Xanatos, Goliath crossed his arms over his chest as he listened to the billionaire go through a speech he thought would sway the Gargoyle. What Xanatos didn't know was that Goliath had been doing his own research. If he was going to do this, he was going to do it properly. There wouldn't be any rushing into things; he would do his research and make his decision based on that research.
He hated to admit it, but Xanatos did have some good points. And he, too, was remembering the way each of the trio had his own rash actions behind a current trigger. But he had learned from the mistakes of his clan. He would not make the same mistake and make this decision lightly.
"I am not planning anything," he growled, forcing himself to uncross his arms and take a step away from Xanatos. Looking out over his city, he added, "And even if I were, I would not discuss it with the likes of you." There was still too much bad blood between them for Goliath to call Xanatos anything more than a reluctant ally, and that only occasionally. There was too much at stake for him to risk trusting the billionaire with what he was thinking, even if he wasn't quite sure what that was, himself.

"Lying doesn't become you Goliath."
Goliath was closed off, making for a difficult conversation. Xanatos could try a few psychological tricks, appeal to the Clan leaders morals or beliefs, find common ground to converse over or try to relax him with another topic. None of it would work though, Goliath had experienced David's trickery before, formed his opinions and was sticking to them. It would be a hard fought debate likely to end with the Gargoyle leaping from the tower to go off on his patrol rather than listen to his once enemy.
"The likes of me? A man who knows how to protect his investments? Who knows how to work any deal in his favour and make it airtight? The man offering to help you out despite how stubborn you're being?"
Goliath had very good reasons not to trust Xanatos, even despite his attempts to make amends for past problems and had offered the tower as a safe haven with the chance for the Clan to once again watch over the castle they considered home. Their allies were free to come and go while their enemies were held off with every legal (in some cases barely or not so legal) resource Xanatos could provide. David could see why the detective was occasionally frustrated with her boyfriend, though outwardly he kept up his usual smile. Angela would have been handy to play peacemaker, though she would then be privy to her fathers situation. Perhaps Goliath's knew Xanatos had thought such a thing as he sent the clan away without him?
"Of course you're planning something. I just want to know that you're planning properly. Yes, you're the strongest man around, but a truly strong man knows when to ask for help."
If he just said the words then David would set Goliath up with his legal team and they'd put together a contract in his favour that even Puck would have trouble deciphering, magic was mostly words after all. The problem was his pride. Hopefully Fox was having as much trouble with Detective Maza, otherwise she'd rub this in David's face for a long time.

There was too much at stake to ignore Xanatos completely, especially when he was attempting to appeal to Goliath's rational side. The problem was that this was Xanatos, the man who had betrayed the clan time and again, in this new world. Thankfully, Goliath hadn't trusted him quite as much as he'd trusted the Captain of the Guard, all those years ago, but the fact remained that Xanatos had had the Gargoyle's trust once, and he had broken it.
Xanatos' words made Goliath's always volatile temper flare, his eyes flashing white momentarily before he got himself (slightly) more under control.
"I am not above asking for help," he practically growled, "but I will not ask for it from you, Xanatos." His wings flared open, held tightly in check by Goliath's iron will. "You come to me and speak as though you are my friend when we all know that you have only your best interests at heart. As long as what I'm planning doesn't reflect poorly on you, you don't really care what I do or who it might affect."
That was how it was, with Xanatos. He was always three steps ahead of everyone, but the only people he cared for (somehow) were himself, his wife, and now little Alex. The Clan meant nothing to him except that they were useful, and Goliath was well aware of that fact.
How could he not be, after all, with all that had happened between the two of them? Goliath had given the billionaire too many chances to play him for the fool, but it would not happen again. Yes, they were here because of his hospitality, because of his "good will," but that did not mean he wanted to be in Xanatos' debt any more than he already was.
Post by David Xanatos on Jan 16, 2015 19:56:12 GMT -5
"Of course you don't want my help. I can't make you human."
A bit of humor was good to defuse a tense situation, but not when the other party was ready to throw you off a building if you kept bothering him. Still, Goliath could restrain himself better than it looked he could. Xanatos would have to come back waving a loaded firearm to really provoke the clan leader. The stubbornness was frustrating despite David's casual demeanor.
"For once though, I'm not in a position to profit from your success. If you don't go through with this, back to the status quo. If you do then you'll have to think about every detail. Will you age? Will you be able to change back if you needed? Will you or your clan become vulnerable?"
Despite the anger behind Goliath's retort, David kind of had it coming. In most of their earlier encounters Xanatos gained an advantage whenever Goliath won or lost. He recovered several powerful items, eliminated rivals, increased his standing and even built his own fortune through clever use of the Phoenix Gate. Goliath had faced the ire of Reynard after being tricked into attacking his airships and the mercenary Pack were let loose on the world just to make Fox look good for the parole board. Asking for the Clan's help was even a secondary method compared to tricking them into helping. Of course the Gargoyle was looking for the catch in this conversation.
"I'm just saying be careful with whoever you do make deals with. You don't want to end up like Demona. Or end up as a new citizen of New York with no social security number, birth record or job skills. I'm sure the detective would put a good word in with the police academy though."
Demona had her ability to shift from human to gargoyle that Goliath might be coveting, but with her immortality bond with MacBeth she didn't need to worry about age. If Goliath took such a deal without considering the differences in lifespan between the species he could probably die as a human while missing the rest of his 'other' lifespan. On the other side of the coin the lack of stone sleep didn't seem to do much for Demona's already aggressive nature. Not to mention his vulnerability if any of his enemies found out that Goliath was suddenly a more vulnerable human.
"Even if you don't trust me as a friend. I hope we can at least trust each others experience with this kind of thing. We've both seen a lot of strange parts of the world, old and new."
ooc: Tell me if this needs changed. Something seems wrong as I was writing it.

Post by Goliath on Feb 3, 2015 23:15:34 GMT -5
As Xanatos spoke, Goliath's eyes flared white once more as he growled and turned away from the billionaire. Though he hated to admit it, Xanatos had quite a few practical points. Goliath liked to think that he'd considered every angle, but how could he, when Xanatos was there, bringing up things he'd either dismissed or not quite thought about?
Goliath wanted to be with Elisa, would do anything for the detective, but was he being rash? Rash and selfish to make this decision when Elisa had already told him that he shouldn't make any deal that would take away his being a Gargoyle? He didn't know what to do; he wanted what was best for Elisa, wanted to do what would make her happy, but would that be putting his clan and his city in danger?
No, surely not; Brooklyn was an entirely capable second-in-command. He would be able to lead the clan if Goliath was unable to do so himself. And he would be able to protect the city; the clan had fared all right without him when he had been finding his way home from Avalon. If it was necessary, they could do so again.
"And what would you suggest that I do?" he asked, somewhat calmer than he had been moments ago. He folded his wings around him and turned to face the billionaire, eyes no longer white. "With all of your schemes, your plots.....what is it that I should do?"
((OOC: I'm actually pretty happy with this. Goliath hates trusting and/or confiding in Xanatos, but he realizes he needs help. xD))
Post by David Xanatos on Feb 9, 2015 19:52:22 GMT -5
"First off, exactly what you're doing now. Look at the problem with a clear head. That anger helps you in a fight but this isn't a situation you can claw through."
Luckily Xanatos had invested a lot of money in powered exoskeleton and armour research, otherwise Goliath would have beaten him into a pulp years ago during his supervillain years. Any of the Gargoyles, once sufficiently angered, could tear through their opposition. Tony Dracon, the Pack and the Hunters had found that out the hard way.
"Next, cover all angles. Think about exactly what you want and how it could be twisted against you. We both know how magic creatures love to play with words."
When Demona tried to control the trickster Puck into doing her bidding, he made his own interpretation of every order she gave. As a result Manhattan was turned into a Gargoyle city, Eliza became a Gargoyle to spare her from Demona's 'kill the human' demand and Goliath and his clan were turned human and did battle with animated parasols and plants. All in all a rather chaotic situation and a source of amusement for Oberon's wayward child. Luckily Goliath was smart enough just to ask him to undo his spells before releasing him, the clan leader was very intelligent and when he focused he could plan for almost anything. His first fight against the Steel Clan was proof of that, how he commanded his brethren on the fly, protected the wounded and kept his cool against Demona's fury.
"Finally, bring a friend. Your daughter, the detective, one of your clan. It's a lot harder to slide down the slippery slope with someone holding your hand."
Briefly, Goliath had used the Eye of Odin to try and protect his friends from the Norse God who owned it. The power of the artifact went to his head and made him a more ruthless version of himself until Angela talked him down. Xanatos believed that, strong a leader as he was, Goliath's family and friends kept him from doing anything that he'd come to regret later and he was lucky to have them.
David's advice covered everything, hopefully. Goliath knew these situations first hand and could make his own conclusions from them, no matter what road he decided to take.

The clan leader listened to Xanatos words, his arms crossed and a growl bubbling beneath the surface. He hated that he was listening to this man, and even worse, that he was considering taking some of his advice. Goliath knew that he had a temper, and it tended to get the best of him; he really did need to take a step and look at everything without his emotions clouding his judgement.
After all, Xanatos was able to distance himself (seemingly) from his issues, and he was almost always three steps ahead of anyone else. Goliath uncrossed his arms, clenching his fists instead. Xanatos was right; the Gargoyle took a deep breath, forcing himself to relax. Had he looked at this situation from every possible angle? He thought he had, but knowing Xanatos, he could probably find several that no one else had thought of.
"I have thought about this situation in every way that I could think of," he told Xanatos, his voice a quiet rumble. "Although, I am sure that you will find something that I have missed," Goliath added, a bit begrudgingly. While he could ask for help when he needed it, he wasn't fond of the idea of needing assistance. He'd been leading his clan for years, now, and sometimes that fact went to his head.
Xanatos had some good advice, but Goliath doubted that he would follow the last piece of it; though the billionaire was probably right and taking someone with him would be a good idea, this was something Goliath had to do on his own.
Post by David Xanatos on Mar 9, 2015 18:41:41 GMT -5
"If you can take advice from me without throwing me off this tower I think you'll have your other problem beat easily Goliath."
David wasn't going to gloat over Goliath finally listening to him. For one thing there was no profit in it and secondly it was a true sign of the Gargoyle's character that he actually did listen. Unfortunately it didn't seem that either he or the detective saw an easy way to continue the relationship regardless of their differences in species, even adopting a child would be difficult with the possibility of any adoption agencies having bias against a father who was a statue whenever the child was awake. Xanatos couldn't even compare his own relationship with Fox to theirs, his half fae wife being not as comparable a difference. That wasn't even beginning to factor in how Demona might feel about her former mate 'lowering' himself to love a human.
"Just remember. What's mine is yours and I'll keep my mouth shut."
It would probably be a better option if David just turned a blind eye whenever Goliath needed to look through the library of his collection of relics and scientific resources. Unless he needed a little help working anything it might sooth his ego to work things out without having to directly ask for help from anyone else. David reached forwards and slid the other cup closer to Goliath as a peace offering.
"I'll admit I'm not sure what path you'll take. But you're smart enough to pick a good one. Might want to drink up, looks to be a cold night."
