Despite the information that the trolls had given him, Hans knew that he needed far more information before he even considered planning his revenge on Arendelle in general, Elsa and Anna in particular. Which was why he was travelling to as many Isles as possible, gathering as much information as he could on Rohandor and on magic, specifically. So far, his findings had not been encouraging; Elsa had been born with her magic, as far as anyone knew, and she was quite powerful.
To fight magic, one generally needed magic, and he didn't have any. If he was going to have to figure out a way to obtain magic of his own, then he really was going to need to know as much about the subject as he possibly could. And that was the reason why he was in this book shop (small though it was), trying to find out whether or not the shopkeeper had anything that would be of use to him.
Hans approached the old man, a charming smile on his face.
"Excuse me, sir," he started, forcing himself to remain calm and polite, despite the fact he completely doubted that there was anything useful here. The bookshop was minuscule; Hans had had more books than this shop contained, simply for the use of his tutors.
"I was wondering if you could help me," he added, though he fully doubted that it was possible, in such a small place, that they would have anything he needed.
It wasn't entirely uncommon for Belle to make her way to the small town beyond the forest. For all her longings for adventure and new places, there was a certain sense of comfort in returning to the familiar surroundings. At least once a month since her Beast's spell was broken, Belle would make the trip out of the forest and to her old home.
Leaving Philippe at her father's cottage with plenty of room to graze and roam, the young woman had begun a familiar route towards the bookshop. Though she didn't tend to borrow books from him any longer-- the library in the castle containing more books than Belle had ever even knew existed-- she still enjoyed visiting with her dear friend.
Stepping into the modest shop, Belle was a bit surprised to find a man she had never seen before speaking with the elderly owner. Strangers were, admittedly, not something one saw a lot of in the town-- she had to wonder where he had come from, observing him out of the corner of her eye as she made her way towards the shelves of books. Trying to keep from eavesdropping, she gave a small wave to the shopkeeper and wandered to the other end of the shop.
"Yes, of course. What is it I can help you with?" The shopkeeper set aside what he had been working on in exchange for giving the young man his full attention, a bright smile on his face.

The last Prince of the Southern Isles had looked around a little bit before he had decided to ask the shopkeeper if he had anything of use; if he had been able to locate what he needed without drawing too much attention to himself, so much the better. He wasn't exactly a forgettable figure; there weren't many tall, attractive, green-eyed redheads wandering about. Which was one of the reasons that his clothing was currently rather ... nondescript. The more he did to blend in, the better.
But he needed information. And he hadn't been able to find anything on his own, which was why he'd turned to the shopkeeper.
The old man seemed friendly enough, but Hans had learned to doubt everyone's motives; there was always something more beneath the surface, some sort of hidden agenda. Just because a person seemed friendly didn't mean they always were. And he'd learned that the hard way, at the hands of his brothers.
"I'm looking for any books you might have on magic," Hans said, pulling an eager expression onto his face. "There's so much that's new about Rohandor and I want to learn about everything," he explained, as though he really was simply interested in learning. Unless one knew him, it would be very difficult to tell that the Prince had an ulterior motive. And he aimed to keep it that way.
"There's so much that's new about Rohandor and I want to learn about everything."
The young man speaking with the shopkeeper sparked Belle's curiosity with that statement, causing her to lift her eyes from the book she'd pulled off the shop, glancing back at him silently. The shopkeeper, on the other hand, gave a bit of a light laugh before shaking his head with a sympathetic sort of smile, "I'm afraid not, sir. You'll be hard pressed to find anything like that around here. My apologies."
Books on magic? Belle scoured her mind, trying to recall if she had ever seen anything like that in the library at the Castle. While nothing immediately leapt to her mind, she knew there was a fairly good chance that somewhere, amongst all those books, there had to be something like what the young man was searching for. What could be the harm of inviting him up to the Castle to take a look at the library? He seemed to be just as curious as herself-- perhaps they could share information.
As the man left the bookshop, Belle took a brief moment to say a quick exchange with the shopkeeper, apologizing for her not having time to join him for tea that day and gave him a promise of returning within the week. With the date settled on, she hurried out of the shop, making quick work of catching up to the young man in the square. Giving him a gentle tap on the shoulder, Belle offered him a sweet smile.
"Pardon me, monsieur, I couldn't help but overhear your discussion. In the bookshop? You said you were looking for books on magic, and I think I... I may be able to help."

Hans couldn't say that the shopkeeper's words surprised him; in fact, he would have been more startled to discover that the old man did have what he was looking for. It was such a small shop, after all; Hans doubted there was much in the shop beyond novels and storybooks to entertain. Which had their time and their place, of course, but he was looking for something useful, at the moment.
He pulled a disappointed expression onto his face, seeming to wilt slightly before the shopkeeper's eyes.
"I thought it might be too much to ask for," he said, clearly dejected, "Thank you for your help," Hans added, turning to leave. Hmm, he didn't want this trip to be wasted; surely there had to be something on this Isle that would give him what he wanted. He paused in the square to consider his options.
Hans had only been stopped a moment before he felt someone tap his shoulder. His first instinct was to go for his sword, but he wasn't currently carrying it. Instead, he fixed a slightly surprised expression on his face, blinking when the young woman addressed him.
"Really?" he asked with a bright smile. "I've been looking all over Rohandor and only a handful of places have been able to help me," he explained, obviously excited by the young woman's words. "I would be in your debt, mademoiselle, truly."
"I'm not certain I'll have what you're looking for, but... well, I think you'll have a much better chance in my library than you will in town." She was glad to see that previously saddened expression she'd seen in the bookshop gone from his face, replaced with an evident excitement. It was refreshing, meeting someone who could get so excited by the prospect of this sort of thing.
Hearing him call her mademoiselle brought her back to the moment, and she shook her head with a warm laugh, "Please, call me Belle. And it would be my pleasure, really-- I'm actually on a similar expedition, to learn all I can about Rohandor. It would be refreshing to spend time with someone who shares such an interest."
Not that Adam didn't share her interest-- it was just that he didn't embrace her search for knowledge in the same way. He was more the sort to go racing off, to witness things for himself whereas Belle found herself occasionally more comfortable with her books.
Taking a moment to push a lock of hair out of her face, Belle glanced back in the direction of her father's cottage, where Philippe would be waiting for her. "It's a bit of a ride from here, through the forest. If that's not too much trouble?"

The fact that the young woman had approached him surprised Hans, but her words were even more unexpected. She had come after him to try to help him. People really were far too trusting. But right now, that was going to work in his favour, so he couldn't disparage human nature too terribly much. Not at the moment, anyway.
"Belle," he repeated with a smile. "Such a lovely name," Hans murmured, taking the young woman's hand and bowing over it. He had been raised as a Prince, after all, and he had impeccable manners, when he wanted to.
Once he'd straightened, he released her hand, charming smile still spread across his face. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Belle. I'm Hans. Really, I cannot begin to thank you enough."
If he kept gushing gratitude while his mind was quickly calculating, he had no doubts that he could keep this young woman off of his true intentions. After all, he was simply a young scholar, traveling from Isle to Isle, soaking up what information he could. There was nothing sinister about that.
She said that it was a bit of a ride and then smile on Hans' face was actually genuine. "Oh, it's no trouble at all. I was just about to get my horse, actually." Sitron was only a few steps away, snuffling at the ground around his feet, looking for something upon which to graze.
Hans took Sitron's reins and led him back over to the young woman with a smile. "This is Sitron," he said, stroking the horse's neck. The horse was perhaps his only friend; he'd been there for him when none of his brothers had been.
In truth, Belle hadn't been expecting such a display of gratitude from the young man, and she couldn't quite help but let out a light laugh. It was a bit different from what she'd come to expect in the town, but not unwelcomed. With her hand released, she shook her head once again with a happy little smile.
"Hans. It's really no trouble, I promise. It's better to share what knowledge people have of the Isles, otherwise we'll never learn anything about them." She let her thought trail off lightly, not wanting to bore the poor dear with her interests in the other lands and what they might hold. Hans stepped a short ways away to gather his horse, returning with the lovely creature.
Gently, Belle reached out and stroked the steed's neck, looking him over with curious eyes, "Sitron... Like citron?Oh, he's just beautiful... A very loved animal, I'm guessing."
It wasn't so much as a simple guess; the horse was clearly a prized possession, judging from the way Hans spoke with such pride. "I'll need to stop by my father's cottage to retrieve Philippe, and then we can be off."
A light gesture was given to the path that lead to Maurice's modest cottage, visible even from their spot in town. With a light smile, she headed off down the path with what she hoped would prove to be a new friend.

Hans knew that the woman's laugh was intended to be good-natured, and he kept his temper in check. It wouldn't do to overreact to something like that, especially when Belle had just offered to help him. Right now, he needed all the help he could get, as much as he hated to admit it. The Prince was used to relying only on himself when he needed anything; having to rely on other people was strange, and he didn't much like it.
But, considering the fact that he barely had any resources, he would have to take what people offered to him. And this young woman was offering him something that could potentially turn the tide. If she really did have books about magic, he could at least have a basis from which to start plotting his revenge.
He pulled a bright smile onto his face, nodding when she said that knowledge needed to be shared. "Oh, I quite agree," he said. "It's one of the main reasons I'm travelling; I'd like to share everything I learn on my way so that people who can't or don't want to travel can still know about the rest of Rohandor." Or at least, it would be if that was what he was really intending to do.
Sitron brought his attention back to the matter at hand when he wuffled, his ears twitching slightly at the young woman's voice, though it was very clear that he was enjoying her attention.
"That's right," Hans agreed when Belle repeated the name, glancing up at his horse with obvious affection. "Sitron's more than just a horse," he said, stroking his neck once more before falling into step behind the young woman. Well, today was looking up. He might finally start to get what he needed to take Arendelle for his own.
"I take it you don't live with your father," Hans commented, considering she'd said that her home was a bit of a ride through the forest. And if he was correct, she'd indicated that that little cottage up ahead was her father's. Interesting.
It seemed she truly had found a kindred spirit, if his words were any hint, and it was refreshing to know that for once it wouldn't just be her sitting alone with her books on the lands and histories. While she rarely was alone in the library, what with Adam and Chip both sharing her love of stories, neither of them seemed to care much for her in-depth research and more often she found herself left to her own thoughts.
As the pair started off down the path towards her father's cottage, she gave the man a little nod, unable to keep herself from smiling, "No, not any more. He lives here alone, now, but... well, he comes and visits me often. I think he gets a bit lonesome."
She was only a short distance from the cottage when Philippe spotted her and trotted his way over to the pair. He gave a light-hearted snuffle in Sitron's direction, before turning his attention to Belle. "And this would be Philippe." His attention earned him gentle strokes along his neck, and the horse made a contented noise as she pulled herself up onto his back.
After a brief moment of adjusting her skirts, Belle looked to Hans and gave him a more shy smile than her previous had been, pushing a stray hair back behind her ear. "If you're still sure you want to come along, it's just through these woods. Shouldn't be too long a ride-- Philippe knows the way by heart, by now."

Interesting. The young woman had lived with her father, but she didn't, anymore. Where, he wondered, did she live? And with whom? He hated to admit that he was actually curious about her, but he remained detached, objective; he was here for one purpose, and that was to gather information, not to make friends. Still, an ally couldn't hurt.
When they reached her father's cottage, Hans smiled at the horse; a creature that looked as though he was meant to be a work-horse, but it was obvious that he was much more than simply that. He was loved and cared for, and for that, Hans was glad. Horses were one of the few animals you could trust, and people that didn't treat them well didn't deserve any of his time, even if he was just using them.
Hans held out a hand to Phillipe, smiling and rubbing the horse's sleek neck as Belle climbed onto his back. He was a beautiful horse; larger than Sitron, but equally as well taken care of.
He saw the smile that Belle offered him and he gave her one of his own, rather inwardly amused that all it had taken for him to gain her trust was to pretend to be genuinely interested in learning about all the isles, as opposed to just one. Well, that wasn't quite true; he did want to learn about all of them, just in case one would better suit his needs than Arendelle.
The Prince climbed onto his own horse, reaching down to pat Sitron's neck. The horse, for his part, flicked his ears back at Hans and wuffled once more, delighted to be off again.
He offered her a little laugh, shaking his head, "I grew up around woods; it'll be a nice change from all the cities, especially for Sitron."
Philippe set off at a good pace, still going slow enough to ensure that Hans and Sitron would be able to keep from getting lost. Belle hummed in thought at his comment, glancing back at him with a curious look on her face.
"Oh, that's right-- I never even asked you where it was you actually came from. I'm sorry," She felt a bit foolish, now; really, she did have a tendency to get too excited over new things, without stopping long enough to ask the appropriate questions. At least he had been kind enough to introduce himself, or she may not have even known his name.
He did say he had been all over Rohandor in his travels, so it was possible he could have been from any of the Isles; and as she had never even ventured too far from her own home, it was entirely possible he could come from a land she had never even heard of. Though, a small, prideful part of her doubted it. She had been reading all she could about the new lands that had formed since she had arrived in Rohandor, and did her best to keep up to date. Still, she wouldn't go so far as to consider herself an expert by any means.

Sitron nickered, shaking his head as he started off, following the other horse. Hans kept his hands on the reins, but he didn't have to do much to guide his horse; Sitron knew that they were following the other group, and he was perfectly capable of doing that much, at least, without being prompted. So Hans let Sitron have his head, for the moment, while he concentrated on the situation at hand.
How much of his true background could he or should he reveal to this young woman? He'd already told her that his name was Hans; if word had gotten around about the youngest Prince of the Southern Isles, he was done for.
But then, an idea popped into his head. And it wasn't that far-fetched. After all, he was planning that Arendelle would be his one day; if he said that he was from Arendelle, he was just officially cementing his ties to the kingdom early on.
"That's all right," he said with a little smile and a laugh, "You had other things on your mind; namely, helping me. I'm not about to fault you for something like that." There were so many rules, when it came to etiquette, that it was almost impossible to remember all of them.
"I'm from a place called Arendelle," Hans offered, watching her closely. He was venturing into dangerous territory, giving her so much information, but if he didn't, she would start to get suspicious. "That's one of the reasons I'm so curious about everything; Arendelle hasn't exactly been here that long."
Hans was kind enough not to fault her too terribly for her absolute lack of etiquette. Really, Belle ought to be more embarrassed about these kinds of things; but she was the sort who knew that everything would be sorted out in the end. And Hans just seemed happy to have someone willing to help him-- though she couldn't understand why someone wouldn't have wanted to. He seemed kind enough, and was only longing to learn.
"Well, for that, I thank you. I've not always been so... quickly forgiven for my awkward social graces in the past." Belle took a moment to tuck a strand of hair back behind her ear, glancing to her side as Sitron pulled into stride with Philippe.
"Arendelle..." She repeated the name, trying to recall where she'd heard it recently. It was a newer land, of that much she was certain, and she thought back to the books of maps that she had been studying one lazy afternoon a handful of weeks before. "That's... on the Isle of the Mountain, right? I've only seen a few mentions of it-- my books aren't all as up to date as I might wish. I've been wanting to go and see it for myself, actually."

Hans appeared to be doing and saying everything right, so far. This young woman had no idea that he was simply planning on using her to gain the information he so desired, and he aimed to keep it that way. And perhaps he could even gain an ally out of all of this, if he could manage to keep her on his good side. But if she heard about what had happened in Arendelle, then all bets were off. Unless, of course, he charmed her so completely that she would be unwilling to hear any sort of slander against his name. In that case, she would protest that he simply wasn't capable of such duplicity, when they told her about what had happened in Arendelle. But he knew full well that that would most likely never happen. When people heard about the incident, they always sided with the sisters, despite his legitimate claims.
When Belle thanked him for so quickly forgiving her lapse in etiquette, Hans just smiled, waving off her thanks as though it was completely unnecessary. "You're only human," he said with a little laugh. He was a Prince, and even he had his moments when he forgot the proper protocol for certain situations. Not that he could tell her that, of course, but in this case, well, he understood her quite well.
He nodded at her question, pulling a little smile onto his lips, as though he was thinking about home and longing to return. "It's on the Isle of the Mountain, yes," he nodded, "And it's one of the most beautiful places you could ever hope to see," Hans added, completely truthful about that. "It has forests and valleys, shining fjords and high mountains," and this time, it wasn't hard to add a wistful tone to his voice. It really was a beautiful place, which was why he wanted to rule it.
"Perhaps you can come visit someday," he said with a smile, and hopefully, that day would be sooner rather than later.
