"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Apr 26, 2016 16:18:26 GMT -5
Everything that had happened at the mansion, dealing with ghosts, helping to reuinte the lovers that had been so ruthlessly torn apart so close to their wedding, it had set Goliath back on his path. He was more determined than ever, now, that he would find some way that would allow him to be with Elisa. But he still wanted more information before he went barrelling headfirst into such a permanent solution. There were times that he acted first and thought about everything later, but this was not one of those times. He needed to make sure that he had thought of almost every possible outcome.
And in order to do that, he needed to talk to someone who would understand his situation.
He had heard of this Prince Adam on the Isle of the Beast, a man who had been turned into a monster, and then somehow, he had turned back. True, it wasn't quite the same situation that he found himself in, but he figured that talking to him might help. He might be able to find out who had changed him into a beast in the first place and go talk to them for help. Or it might turn out to be a bust, but either way, it was a starting point.
Goliath set out as soon as the sun set and he had shed his stone skin, putting Brooklyn in charge of the clan for the evening. They had surely noticed how distracted their leader was, and it was certainly no secret that he and Elisa had been ... rather more distant, recently. He needed to get this figured out as quickly as possible, for the good of the clan, as well as himself and Elisa.
It didn't take long for the ferry to arrive on the Isle of the Beast, and Goliath looked around, hopeful for any tall buildings that might allow him to catch the air currents so that he could glide to this castle. The mast appeared to be the tallest thing around, and he scaled it easily, his wings unfurling to catch the wind, much like the sails of the ships.
He glided through the air, catching higher currents to get a better view. Surely, a castle would not be an easy thing to miss. And soon enough, he spotted it. Goliath used the air currents to glide closer to the castle, setting down in the courtyard, beyond a set of very large gates. He should have let this Prince Adam know that he was coming first, but he hadn't had the time, once he'd made up his mind. He just hoped that the prince was the forgiving sort towards unexpected and rather late guests.
Caping his wings around him, Goliath made his way to the castle doors, knocking firmly in the hope that someone would be up and about at this late hour.
Belle had a terrible habit of staying up far later than she intended to. With her husband long since gone to bed, she would find herself swept up in stories, histories or her own writings. This night, she was reading up on the very drawn out history of the Silver Kingdom of the Mirror, the oldest kingdom in Rohandor. There was no true point to her research, nothing outside of her yearning to know all that she could about the lands that surrounded her.
She had been nestled up on the rug by the fire when she heard the loud sound from floors below, the sound reverberating through the castle walls. Someone was knocking on the front doors?
Knowing just how late it was and that everyone was, with any luck, already asleep, Belle took it upon herself to leave her research on the rug and begin the walk down the long flights of stairs to the main floor. She took a moment to smooth her dress back into a presentable fashion before pulling the heavy door open, peering out into the night.
The sight of the creature standing outside her door was a shocking one, and Belle clasped a hand to her chest in surprise, a gasp escaping her. Catching her breath as quickly as she could from the shock, she exhaled a short laugh at herself for such a reaction. If the being standing there had meant any harm, she doubted he would have bothered to knock.

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Apr 28, 2016 0:08:17 GMT -5
As he waited, many scenarios went through his head. It was true that most humans were not used to gargoyles, if they believed they existed at all. Hopefully, Prince Adam would be the sort that would not be frightened of him, considering the ordeal he'd gone through himself. Still, there was always a chance that he would be afraid of the large gargoyle, and if that was the case, Goliath wasn't sure what he would do.
He had almost made up his mind that he should leave, that he should come back some other time, when the Prince was expecting him, when the large doors opened.
A young woman was the one who answered the door, and by the way that she reacted to him, with a gasp and clutching a hand to her chest, it was obvious that he'd frightened her. Not that he could really blame her, though; it was the middle of the night, and he cut an imposing presence. Still, even Elisa had been surprised upon seeing them, at first, so surprised that she'd fallen off of the building.
And this woman seemed to recover quite quickly, letting out a little laugh even as Goliath watched. After another moment, she asked if she could help him.
His wings were caped around him, but he offered the young woman a little bow nonetheless; he didn't know what her position was in this household, but it wouldn't do to be impolite.
"Forgive the late intrusion," he rumbled, standing to his full height once more, "but I am unable to make any appointments during the day," he explained. He'd give her more information if she wanted it, but hopefully, that would suffice for the moment. "I was hoping to discuss an issue with the lord of this castle, a Prince Adam, I believe."
He realized just how .... awkward this was, really, barging into someone's home unannounced, without knowing them, to discuss a ... highly personal matter. Perhaps he should have at least written this prince a letter, first.
Belle was quick to respond to the little bow she was offered, a curtsy coming as something of a reflex by this point, and she found herself having to force herself to focus on his words, instead of taking in the features of the being standing before her.
He was tall, much taller than she was, and had piercing eyes. His skin was a stone-like grey colour, and if her eyes had not already been adjusted to the night time, she suspected that the only part of him she would have been able to see where those eyes. Large wings protruded from his back and wrapped loosely around him, and she found herself comparing him to fantasy creatures from the stories in her books.
He didn't look unkind; if anything, he reminded her of a certain someone in her life.
"With Adam...?" She repeated curiously, opening the door a bit wider than she previously had, before taking a bit of a step backward and gesturing for him to come inside, instead of standing outside for their discussion. "I'm... I'm afraid that isn't possible, right now. He's actually been away, on a business of sorts with the other royalty of the Isle. But perhaps someone here will be able to help you? What was it you wanted to discuss... if, if I may ask?"

The young woman replied to his bow with a little curtsy of her own. It was clear that the gesture came easily to her, which meant that she was used to performing such a motion. Of course, that didn't help him figure out whether she was a servant of the household or part of it; all would have to be familiar in the etiquette of the day.
She listened as he spoke, but more and more, he was wishing he'd written a letter, explaining his business, before simply showing up at the Castle. This was one of those times that he had acted before thinking, and he did not want to do the same sort of thing in this situation. It was why he was here, after all, to gather more information.
Even as he was thinking these things, the young woman explained that Prince Adam was unavailable, that he was away on business, which was another point in favour of writing a letter. Goliath would learn from this situation, but for now, the lovely young lady was offering her own assistance.
"I wished to discuss his ... situation with him," Goliath said, almost haltingly. It was potentially awkward and personal, he knew, but..., there were very few people he could seek out for advice, and he thought that this Adam might have been one of them.
"I am sorry for the intrusion," Goliath rumbled, offering her another slight bow, "I should have written first. I can go, if that's what you'd prefer, Miss...," he trailed off, realizing that he didn't know the young woman's name, nor had he introduced himself. "Forgive my lack of manners; I am called Goliath."
The more Belle explained the situation, the more she saw a sort of meekness come over the creature. Not to say that he himself seemed meek; she somehow doubted that was at all possible. It was more that he seemed... awkward, suddenly, not as confident or in control as he had a moment prior.
At her offer to help, he explained why he had come, and the young woman couldn't help a knowing little nod as a laugh escaped her, "You want to ask about the Beast."
She couldn't say she was entirely surprised; it was a commonplace topic that Adam had had to deal with since the curse had been broken, even more so since their arrival in Rohandor. She hoped this creature before her wasn't going to be disappointed to find that the Beast was no more.
He offered to go, and then seemed to realise at the same moment she did that neither one had properly introduced themselves. Another little smile, Belle lifted a hand to stop his apology before dropping it back to her side. "Please, don't apologise-- I'm clearly no better. Goliath... It's a fitting name. I'm Belle, and really, you don't have to go. I... might be able to answer any questions you have, after all."

Goliath shifted slightly as the young woman laughed. Clearly, this was a situation she'd dealt with before. Then again, he wasn't terribly surprised; it was the sort of thing that drew attention when people knew anything about it.
A small smile slipped onto his chiseled face and he let out a little laugh of his own. "Is it that obvious?" he asked in a rumble. He was rather a Beast himself, or so some would say. But those were the people that knew nothing about Gargoyles; they had been around for quite some time and they were actually quite an advanced race. Or had been, before most of them had been wiped out.
The young woman had stopped him from leaving, introducing herself as Belle and again offered to answer any questions he might have.
Goliath took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as he considered how he could phrase this question. There was much at stake, not to mention that he didn't want to offend Belle, who had been quite understanding, so far.
Finally, he knew he was just going to have to come right out and ask; there was no other way to do it.
"How did he ... become human?" he asked. He realized that, unlike himself, the man had not always been a Beast. But if there was someone who had the power to change a man into a Beast, perhaps they had the power to turn a Gargoyle into a man.
He questioned if the reason for his arrival was so obvious, but in truth, she did her best not to assume anything of anyone, no matter how they looked. It was a lesson she held rather close to her heart, after all. And so, she simply shook her head with a smile, leaning against the thick door a moment as she waited for him to continue.
After a moment of what she could only call comfortably awkward silence, Goliath voiced his question, and Belle began to suspect she knew the creatures reason for coming all this way. Shifting her weight from foot to foot, she took a moment to pull the door open wider, gesturing for Goliath to come inside.
"That... is something of a complicated story, and I'm afraid it might not give you the answers you want..." Pursing her lips, she watched him another moment before smiling, "But if you still want to hear it, why don't we retire to one of the sitting rooms? It may be a bit more comfortable than standing here in the entryway. I can make us some tea... Do you..." She didn't want to ask, because it sounded terribly offensive in her head, but she supposed she had to ask before she just assumed, "Do you... drink tea?"

As soon as the large Gargoyle spoke, as soon as he asked the question that he had come here to ask, he was even more convinced that he should have written a letter to explain his reason for asking such a prying, personal question.
But the young woman (Belle, she had said), didn't appear to be offended by his question. Quite the contrary; she opened the door a bit wider and gestured for Goliath to come inside.
He caped his wings slightly tighter around himself, stepping inside the huge castle doors as she spoke. She suggested that they retire to one of the sitting rooms to discuss what had happened, and he nodded, a smile finding its way onto his chiseled face.
At her question of whether or not he drank tea, it was Goliath's turn to offer a little laugh. "I do drink tea," he answered, his voice an amused rumble. "Thank you for the offer. And for being so .... understanding." He would apologize again for showing up so late, but ofr now, he needed her to know how much he appreciated that she hadn't simply told him to be on his way.
"Can I close the door for you?" he asked, glancing at the entryway. It had to be heavy, and she had been so gracious that it was only right that he offer to do what he could to help while he was here.
Even as he asked, his mind was racing. She'd said that his question required a bit more of a complicated story; what had really happened? Would it be rude of him to ask? Though he supposed, if it was, it wouldn't really be any more rude than he'd already been, barging into the castle (upon invitation, but still) in the middle of the night, with no warning, asking about personal matters. Thank goodness Belle appeared to want to help; it was a nice change, to find someone who wasn't simply frightened of him the moment they saw him.
Belle was thankful for the gentle rumble of laughter that escaped her guest; his humour clearly warm, not mocking at her lack of knowledge of a creature such as himself. At his offer to shut the castle door, she gave a thankful nod, starting off towards the sitting room.
"Thank you... Ah, and as for tea, I'll get a pot ready for you. No need to wake anyone over some tea. Please, make yourself comfortable in here; I'll be back in just a moment."
And without so much as a second thought about leaving the near-stranger alone in her home, Belle hurried off down the long halls towards the kitchen. Taking her favourite tea pot from the cupboard, she set about preparing the tea service as her water bubbled and boiled. Before long, she was carefully returning to the sitting room, the tray balanced carefully in her hands and the sweet smell of cinnamon brewing.
"I hope you don't mind-- I didn't ask what kind of tea you preferred, so I just chose one of my favourites." The tray is placed on a table near the small couches that surround the fireplace, still burning brightly despite the hour. Her books remained scattered on the floor, and Belle finds herself momentarily flustered, hurrying to pick them up and place them out of the way. "Now, you said you wanted to know Adam's story, and how he became human? I suppose, the important thing would be to start with how he became... the Beast in the first place."

Goliath easily closed the huge doors before following after Belle as she started off. She said that she'd make the tea, that there was no need to wake someone for something like that, and he nodded. After a moment, they reached a lavish sitting room, a fire crackling away in the fireplace. Belle told him to make himself comfortable, and he was already starting to look around when she left.
The furnishings in this room were tastefully done, all matching in style as well as colour. It was quite different from the way that Castle Wyvern had been in its prime, but that was only natural, of course. This castle was from a different time, a different place; of course things wouldn't be the same.
A scatter of books sat on the rug near the fire, which immediately captured Goliath's attention. That little stack, along with the other signs of Belle's presence, made the otherwise large space feel lived in, comfortable. He reached out a taloned hand and took the top book off of the stack, interested in the various maps it contained.
Goliath was quite the avid reader, and he didn't think he'd seen this particular book before, though he was pleased that it existed. There was much he still didn't know about Rohandor, and he read what he could on it, when he had the chance.
He hadn't managed to get terribly far when Belle returned, carrying a tray set for tea. A smile found itself on his chiseled features when she said that she'd chosen one of her favourites; he certainly didn't mind. "Thank you," he murmured as she moved to place the tray on a nearby table. She'd gone to a lot of trouble to make sure that he was comfortable, and he appreciated it more than he could say; most people would have slammed the door the moment they'd caught sight of him, after all.
Once she'd set the tray down and moved a few of her books, Goliath crossed to the couches, sitting down carefully, mindful of his tail and his wings, before putting the book he'd been looking through on the table as well.
"He was not always a Beast," Goliath said, a statement more than a question. He'd heard that it had been some sort of enchantment, and Belle's words confirmed that. He supposed it would have been too simple if this Adam had been born a Beast; then Goliath would only need to follow in his footsteps to become human himself.
The large Gargoyle very carefully made himself a cup of tea, adding several sugars and a little bit of milk, mindful of his size and his talons. Belle was being so gracious; it would never do to ruin her tea service.
If she were the sort of person to guess, Belle would have thought there was a sort of disappointment in Goliath's eyes at discovering that Adam had not always been the Beast he was so known for. In that brief moment, a realisation dawned over her, the reasoning for his visit suddenly making itself more clear. Was it possible that the creature before her was not the result of any sort of magic? A being like this, natural in the world of Rohandor, did not surprise her so much as it once would have--- however, the idea that, perhaps, he was trying to become something else?
"No, monsieur. Once upon a time, he was nothing more than a spoiled, ill-behaved human." It felt odd, speaking of the man she loved in such a light, but the story she knew had been spoken by his own lips by now. He would have referred to himself as much the same. "It was magic that turned him to the Beast, a powerful spell cast by an Enchantress... but as far as we are aware, she has not been seen in Rohandor, if this is what you are wondering."
Belle watched with faint amusement at how gently the gargoyle set about with making his tea, each motion seeming to take him twice as long in his hesitation. She also could not help but see the humour in so frightful a creature taking his tea with so much sugar, but did her best to keep any sign of amusement hidden. It would do no good to laugh at her guest.
Once he had finished, Belle poured herself a cup of the sweet tea, sitting back on the small settee before the fireplace to continue. "This spell was what had turned him into the Beast, a curse that could only be broken when he learned to love, and be loved in return. But... something tells me, that sort of thing is not what you were hoping to hear?"
Offering him a gentle smile, she took a slow sip of her tea, allowing the meagre story she had told him to settle in, "...If you don't mind my asking, Goliath... what is it that you are looking for? Not a story, I suspect."

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jan 7, 2018 3:58:03 GMT -5
He had known that it was entirely possible that he would not find what he was looking for when he had decided to come here. But he had taken that into consideration, and he had chosen to come here anyway. There was more to the story than he knew, after all, which was the main reason he had come, to find out the truth of what had happened to this Prince Adam.
Belle confirmed that he had not always been the Beast, that he had been human before the creature had existed. It was magic, an Enchantress that had changed him, and before he could even manage to ask about the whereabouts of such an Enchantress, Belle said that she hadn't been seen in Rohandor, predicting that he had been going to ask.
Silence fell between them for a moment as both the young woman and the Gargoyle took a moment to enjoy their tea. Goliath's mind was working quickly, processing what Belle had told him, trying to decide if his next step would be to try to look for the Enchantress or to persue possible other alternatives.
The young woman leaned back in her seat once more, and as she continued the story, Goliath returned his full attention to her, only wavering to occasionally sip his tea.
She finished her story, offering the Gargoyle a smile as she asked what he was truly looking for. Goliath had been expecting a question like that from the moment he had barged up to the door, uninvited and unannounced.
He put his cup and saucer down on the little table next to him, a grave expression on his face. What was he looking for? Answers, was the short explanation. But he had a feeling that Belle wouldn't be satisfied with an answer like that. Ane he wouldn't have, if he had been in her place.
"I......care for someone very deeply," he rumbled, his eyes distant. "And I cannot give her what she wants, what she needs. Not like this." He would do anything for Elisa, but he knew that he had to be smart about this. There was a lot that could go wrong, after all.
Goliath's explanation was a brief one, but it spoke volumes nonetheless. He was in love. Yes, she supposed that explained everything, why a man ( or beast, or whatever Goliath truly was ) would travel so far in the dead of night to hear a story.
"...And she told you this?" There's a note of disbelief in Belle's tone, the way she tilts her head as her new companion speaks of his situation. Somehow, it seemed unlikely to her. Considering herself to be somewhat skilled in the art of reading people, she may not have known Goliath long, but she felt as if she did know him. There was a softness in those large hand, in a creature who handled even just a tea cup with such caution.
And while, perhaps, his lover was thrown by his outward appearance... there was such a kind soul in those eyes. How could anyone not see it? Really, he reminded her a great amount of her own husband. Perhaps that was why she felt the need to convince him so suddenly, or perhaps she felt a kinship between them. Whatever it was, it had her reaching over to settle her hand atop his own.
"Did she tell you that you could not give her what she needs, monsieur... or do you just believe this of yourself? You care for her, you said. Is it... not too presumptuous of me to think that she cares for you, too?"

Goliath gazed down to the teacup in his large hands, his eyes focused on the liquid within, as though it held the answers he sought. Belle had been very forthcoming to a relative stranger, something that he appreciated more than he could say. She hadn't had to talk to him at all, let alone invite him in for tea at such a late hour. He was going to have to make it up to her, somehow, though he hadn't yet figured out quite how.
He looked up at Belle's question, a wry smile finding its way onto his chiseled features. It seemed that she was getting right to the heart of the matter, much like Elisa tended to do. Perhaps the two of them should meet. It would be quite interesting, at the very least; two strong, smart young women. Goliath thought they would get along quite well.
Goliath shook his head, letting out a little sigh. "Not in so many words," he admitted. Elisa had not told him flat out that he could not give her what she wanted, but their conversation had served to remind him just how very different they really were. And he would not ask her to give up everything for him. "But she wants to be married and to have children, children that I could never give her." Nor did he think they could marry, considering that he was not human. "She could never have a normal life with me," he rumbled, and it was, perhaps, the first time he had voiced such a thing.
