Basil flinched as the debris landed next to him, stifling a foul mouthed outburst as he quickly deduced the intended result of Ratigan's decoy tactic. Even now Preston was arming his weapon. The detective sprinted for his life as a storm of blunderbuss shot trailed towards him, the weight of the weapon prevented the scientist from leading his intended target and instead directed the fire just behind him.
"Ratigan is loose Preston! I'm your only hope for survival!"
"A pathetic attempt at suberrrfuge detective."
Preston was too wrapped up in his own plans to take any warning from his enemy, but for now he'd at least stopped firing to conserve ammunition. Basil crouched low and stalked through the dust and darkness. Physically overpowering Preston would leave him open to an ambush by Ratigan, but it would be next to impossible to strike down Ratigan even if Preston wasn't ready to shot at every noise around him. Ratigan might have the same ideas about silence to avoid Preston shooting at him, but he could easily wring Basil's neck with one hand. Meanwhile the noise of Preston's weapon made counting shots more difficult, so it would be folly to assume he was out of ammunition.
There was the dart guns though, the ones used to ambush them earlier in the evening to set up the trap in the first place. Remote controlled to be sure but with Preston's workmanship they'd be easy to rework into a useful weapon, or at very least easy to make into a distraction. Hopefully the former but beggars couldn't be choosers. The detective made his move through the house, keeping a stealthy approach and trying to avoid the two hunters after him. First he had to retrace his initial entry into the building, then follow the point he was tranquillised back to the weapon. All the while hoping that Ratigan was too focused on deciding which enemy to destroy to follow the same plan.
If he wouldn't have been in danger of revealing his position to Preston, Ratigan would have laughed out loud at Basil's feeble attempt to sell him out. True, Preston's intellect was considerably lower than either his or the detective's, but it seemed the inventor still had some brains after all. Despite the fact that the mouse was telling the truth, Preston's choice not to trust Basil's word was a smarter one than Ratigan would have given him credit for.
And surpassing all of Ratigan's expectations, Preston had had the foresight to bring at least a little extra ammunition. Not that it would help him. While he was distracted by reloading the device, Ratigan crept up behind the inventor and delivered a forceful blow to the head. As Preston crumpled to the floor, the professor snatched up the weapon he'd been carrying.
Now there was only Basil left to deal with--he'd take care of Preston properly later. Carrying the inventor's unconscious form over his shoulder and dragging the high-powered weapon along with one hand, Ratigan set about hunting his new prey. Basil had a head start and stealth on his side, but Ratigan felt certain that he had the advantage now, with the 'firing squad' safely in his possession. "Oh, Basil..." He called out in a low, singsong voice. "Look what I've got..."

Basil knew better than to ask for Ratigan to clarify his taunts, he was clearly armed and would likely have less trouble handling Preston's weaponry. For now the detective focused on his original plan, he had just found one of the dart guns used in the initial ambush. It was a simple design, automated feeding system to load new darts, a hose connected to an air supply and of course the box like outer shell. All in all it was pretty much a blow dart with several extra unnecessary components.
The mouse turned the launcher as quietly as he could, then used a metal scrap to cut part of the hose free. With one strong lungful he could fire the weapon, but first he had to lure his opponent in front of it. Taking the hose with him, he moved behind a wooden support keeping it between him and the main area of the house, hopefully it would provide some solid cover if Ratigan opened fire.
"I'll hazard a guess that you've gained Preston's weapon with designs for my annihilation. Of course you'll likely kill Preston and everyone in your entourage who knew you were coming here tonight rather than admit that you had to resort to the work of a lesser mind to finish me off."
Provocation at the most basic level, but if it worked then all the better. Basil took a deep breath after his insult and blew down the hose to launch more darts. Hopefully a few would hit, maybe enough to calm the likely fuming criminal behemoth.
Basil's response brought a malicious grin to Ratigan's face as he followed the sound of the detective's voice, barely paying attention to what had been said. The fool had revealed his hiding spot--unless, he realized, Basil was also armed and trying to lure him into a trap.
Just in time, Ratigan turned towards where he had heard Basil and shifted his grip on Preston, who was just starting to stir, bringing the inventor and his weapon up to block the darts Basil had fired. Several darts hit the side of the 'firing squad' and clattered uselessly to the floor, and one lodged in Preston's arm, throwing the unlucky inventor back into unconsciousness.
"I see we're both armed, Basil." Ratigan chuckled, slinging Preston back over his shoulder. "Unfortunately for you..."
Muffled shouts from outside drew the professor's attention and caused him to trail off. The police had apparently been summoned to the scene thanks to the noise Preston's machine had made. "Blast it." He grumbled. Ratigan knew he could either exact his revenge on Basil now, or evade capture--but not both, especially not with Preston and the gun weighing him down.
"I'll deal with you properly some other time, detective. Mark my words: this isn't over." With a growl of frustration, Ratigan threw the gun in what he hoped was Basil's direction and ran, aiming for the shadowed corner with the hole he'd entered from earlier that night.
He regretted the loss of Preston's weapon, but he knew he could always have a replacement made. What mattered more was successfully escaping to fight another day, ideally with Preston in tow--he had plans for that mouse. Hopefully the police-mice that had been summoned to the scene hadn't covered all the exits...

Basil listened for the impact of the darts, his ears perked up to hear the sound of needles against metal and something soft. So at least one dart had hit Ratigan. Of course a rat of his raw strength wouldn't go down easy. The mouse returned to the gun and removed two more darts, reversing his grip on them so that he could jab them downwards into the Professor (provided he could ambush him properly).
Bells and whistles in the distance caught his attention as he crouched. Finally the police had arrived after what must have been a lot of cannon fire and possibly days of Preston banging tools and parts around the derelict house. Of course by turning up now they were at risk of Ratigan mowing them down with the weapon he'd seized. Now or never.
The detective charged at the villain, only to be knocked aside as the portable firing squad was discarded in his general direction. To add insult to injury it wasn't even an aimed throw, just one of necessity as Ratigan carried Preston off. Either he intended to put the scientist to work or take some vengeance out for the indignities he'd suffered. Either way Basil was pinned under an absurdly large firearm and was unable to mount a rescue.
Several officers rushed in waving truncheons and blowing whistles, running around chaotically before the dust fully cleared and they had surrounded Basil.
"You there! Drop the weapon and raise your hands."
"Hold it, that's the Baker Street detective, help him up you lot."
Two officers struggled to drag the gun off of Basil, allowing him to stand and fix his bedraggled clothing.
"Please someone tell me that you fully surrounded the building before rushing in. Otherwise a criminal mastermind has just gotten loose with a dangerous weapon designer."
The officers looked around sheepishly.
"Well, it is rather hard to cover all exits. These old houses have a lot of holes in them."
The sounds of police whistles and general chaos faded as Ratigan ran from the building, sticking to the shadows to ensure he wasn't seen.
It wasn't quite as exciting or challenging as the earlier events of the night, since he hadn't been noticed or followed by any of the officers on the scene, but that suited the professor perfectly. It left his mind free to focus on plotting his next move rather than on evading the police. Besides, carrying both Preston and his machine while trying to maintain a certain level of stealth and agility was difficult enough, especially given the toll the evening's activities had taken on his energy.
Yet somehow, Ratigan managed it well enough, for he was able to return to his old lair relatively unhindered. As he settled in on his throne to examine Preston's device, the inventor, whom he'd tied to a chair and placed nearby, started to stir.
"What..." As his gaze landed on the other occupant of the room, his confused expression quickly turned into an indignant snarl. "Rrratigan! Why, you--"
"Ah, Preston! So glad you're awake." Ratigan cut off the mouse's tirade before it could begin as he stood, setting down the one-man firing squad.
"You made quite the impression on me today," He said airily, sauntering towards the immobilized Preston, who'd gone quiet--presumably the danger of the situation had finally occurred to him. "Especially with that gun of yours. So I thought we ought to have a chat about your future."
At this, the professor leaned towards his captive and grinned, showing off his sharp teeth and making the inventor gulp nervously. "...Assuming you'll have much of a future. But that's all up to you, of course. What do you say--still interested in working for me?"
Preston nodded furiously, and Ratigan leaned back, his toothy grin morphing into a smug smirk. "Wonderful. I'm sure we can find an excellent use for your talents, Preston. As a matter of fact, I have a few ideas already..."
