Moana blinked when Sally suggested there may not have been an ocean in Halloween Town. She tilted her head, long dark hair falling over her shoulder, trying to picture a world where the open sea didn't exist. Simply put, she couldn't – for it was always there in the back of her mind, even when she couldn't see it. However, the ragdoll quickly added that she was far from certain, as her people rarely ventured away from their chief settlement. That was a feeling the young sailor understood entirely. Her family had once tried to keep her away from the sea, safe in their village, almost fearful of leaving. It was only recently, under her leadership, that the people of Motonui had become voyagers once again.
Thus, she nodded. “My people used to do that too,” she offered, smiling at the comparison.
It was then that Moana's new companion made her way over to a rocky outcrop – heaps of circular stone – and rather nimbly mounted them, sitting cross legged and looking out to sea. The young woman joined her, following over the sands, Pua close at their heels. She took up a perch close by, dropping into a similar position, though folded her ankles under her thighs.
As Sally explained the traditions and customs of her home, Moana found it very hard not to draw further comparisons with Lalotai – though as far as the chieftain was aware, there was only way into and out of the realm of monsters; not that she was an expert. It did, however, seem plausible that the cave was a way between worlds; and she too hoped the portal worked both ways, or she was unsure how to return her friend home.
Sitting silently for a moment, pondering what she'd been told, the conversation turned toward Moana's and her life, Sally taking her turn to ask questions. Looking over to her, the sailor smiled. “You don't have to be sorry. I asked you about your home because I like hearing stories about different lands and people...it's interesting. My grandmother used to tell me all about the world...” She sighed wistfully, remembering the old woman's face, thought of the bright spirit manta that swum alongside her in even the darkest of times.
Then, she shook her head, getting back to the questions she'd been asked. “This isn't Motonui. Motonui is...” Shuffling a little closer to the ragdoll, the young sailor pointed out to sea, her finger aimed at a seemingly empty spot on the horizon. “That way. At least, the island we used to call Motonui.” Dropping her arm, she raised her shoulders in a half shrug. “Motonui is more than just a place though. It's a people. My people. It's wherever we settle, I guess.”
That was after all what her people had become – voyagers once more, who could always return to their source of origin, but more often than not traversed the seas to find new islands – new homes. “I was just out here exploring – looking for somewhere our boats can come ashore.”
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Moana's kindness was a constant when she shirked Sally's apologies for monopolizing the conversation. The monster was absurdly grateful that she'd happened upon Moana at all, under the circumstances when the chieftain had found her, but also that Moana had such a kind heart. She explained that the little isle they sat on wasn't Motonui. Shuffling closer to line up her finger properly from Sally's point of view, pointed to an unremarkable point on the misty horizon of the sea to show in which direction Motonui really was.
When Moana said that Motonui was more than a place, it was her people, Sally paused to contemplate that. Her large eyes blinked slowly, looking out to the rolling tides while she turned what Moana said over in her mind. She supposed it made a deal of sense. Sally and her fellow citizens were very fond of the village in which they lived, but if they were all to pick up and move somewhere else, that somewhere else would be Halloween Town.
"Hmm," Sally hummed in pleased pondering. What Moana spoke of was a wonderful thing. The ragdoll turned back to look fondly at Moana. "Well, I'm very glad that you were here exploring. You saved my stitches!" Sally stood, then. She glanced around her, remembering where the cave had been in her head opposed to where the beach they were on now was located.
"Would you like to explore this little island with me on my way back to that cavern? I'm sure I can find it myself, if you're too busy or need to get back to your tribe." If Moana had to depart, Sally would see her off warmly, and share more full-fledged goodbye's.
For a long moment, the rag doll and young chieftain sat in silence. Both watched the waves lapping at the shore, and finally Sally hummed softly, as if deep in thought. Looking over at the resident of Halloween Town, Moana smiled warmly and shrugged her shoulders at the suggestion the cross-stitched woman was glad of her exploration – as it had saved her from drowning or worse, falling apart. “I'm glad I was exploring too,” she replied. And she was. It warmed her heart to know she'd been able to aid someone in need: she felt that out there, somewhere, her grandmother's spirit would have been immensely proud of her.
Sally rose from the rocks on which they were seated first, turning on the spot as if getting her bearings. Then, she inquired if the young native of Motonui would care to go exploring, and Moana's smile became a huge grin. Hopping to her feet in a flurry of movement, Pua rushing to her side to keep up, the chieftain nodded, her wild locks bouncing as she did so. “That's what I'm here for.” Indeed, depending on the resources the island possessed, Moana would advise her tribe to either come ashore or look elsewhere to replenish their supplies – and she wouldn't be able to make an informed decision without partaking in her favourite past time: adventuring. “And I always find exploring is more fun with company!” she added quickly, Pua snorting his agreement at her side.
Then, without waiting for much in the way of a response, the young chieftain set off at a quick walk – almost a jog, energy radiating from her every pore. Heading away from the beach and toward a thick treeline, there was an unmissable spring in her step. “This way! I saw some strange looking creatures on the other side of the island. They were hanging upside down from branches.” Glancing back at Sally, she grinned. “And they weren't bats,” she added, recalling what Sally suggested about her hometown and its indigenous animals.
Moana hoped that would serve to pique the ragdoll's interest – it certainly had the young woman's. However, in her role as chieftain, so too did the trees themselves – and the foods that the odd hanging beasts might fed upon. Indeed, there was a chance that whatever their diet consisted of could also help feed her travelling tribe.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally didn't know what she'd expected. When she asked if Moana cared to explore the little isle on Sally's quest back to the cavern that had swept her from Halloween Town, the young human woman seemed at once super-charged with energy. Sally watched, intrigued, as Moana practically leaped off of the rock she sat on in agreement. "Oh!" Sally said when Moana said exploring was why she was there in the first place. "Well, that's wonderful, then!"
She really would have been fine, going it alone, but Sally found that she was very glad she didn't have to. As though this thought fluttered from the ragdoll's mind and into Moana's own, she underscored the concept: "exploring is more fun with company."
Sally laughed softly. "I can agree with that." She dusted off the patchwork planes of her skirt and looked up to see that Moana was already nearly halfway across the small beach they were on. Sally's eyes widened at this, then softened while she smiled in thoughtfulness. She was used to having to keep up with enthusiasm. Jack's was the stuff of legend. Sally felt, just then, that Moana and Jack would get on very well, and hoped that some day she'd be able to properly introduce them.
Fortunately Sally's inhumanly long legs let her keep pace with Moana's near-jog easily enough. She paused, picked Moana's rooster from where he'd been secured and fitted him into the nook of one arm in such a way where he couldn't peck at her. She didn't want him to be left there alone. Moana was calling back to her, something about creatures hanging upside down from trees that weren't bats.
"Do you think they're friendly?" Sally asked, picking up to a brisk tread to catch up with the human. If they were hostile in any way, Sally didn't think the should be seeking them out. Then again, Sally didn't know how they'd find out one way or another without investigating.
