Participating Characters:Fa Mulan / Sally Forum Location: Halloween Town Time of Day: Early evening Weather: Halloween gloom Thread Location: The path leading toward Halloween Town Premise: Mulan accidentally finds herself in Halloween Town. Let chaos commence.
Quite how it had happened Mulan wasn't sure. As far as she was aware, she had followed the map she'd been given perfectly, and she most certainly hadn't muddled her instructions. She had galloped from Imperial City to the shores of her land, taken a boat to the Isle of the Crown, and there had made her way north – hoping to reach the Golden Kingdom of the Dawn, where upon she was to meet with a vassal of the Princess Aurora and pass on the Emperor of China's proposal for a Royal visitation. Somehow, though, she found herself nowhere near a Kingdom of anything, lost instead in a forest seemingly without end.
Sat on the back of her trusty steed, Khan, the supposed saviour of China tilted the scroll in her hands one way and her head the other, squinting her eyes and pursing her lips, before turning it upside down, back to front, and eventually snorting a frustrated sigh through her nose. “It's useless...I have no idea where we are, or how to get where we're going.” In a show of quite how lost she was, the young woman leant forward and held the map in front of her horse's eyes. “Any ideas?”
Stopping dead, Khan all but scowled, then shook his head, snorting in a very similar manner to Mulan. “No...I thought not,” she muttered, somewhat dejectedly, before sitting back in her saddle and letting her head loll, groaning in frustration. Mentally, she chastised herself. She had been offered a guide, and she most certainly should have accepted said offer. However, being her she'd refused, not wanting to be a burden, certain that she could, at least, follow simple direction.
She should have known better.
It took Mulan by surprise when Khan suddenly whinnied, looking back at her with wide eyes. Sitting up instantly, her brows rose. “Huh?” Up ahead, there was a break in the seemingly never-ending sprawl of foliage; a clearing. “Maybe that's a way out...” she murmured to herself, urging the horse onward with two heel taps to his flanks. Setting off at a jog, both steed and rider emerged in a perfect circle of towering, leafless trees, each baring coloured carvings, designs scratched into their bark.
Pausing in the centre of the space, Mulan turned Khan, looking at each – drawn by the strange markings. It most certainly wasn't an exit, but it was far more intriguing than the repetitive sea of fir and oak she'd passed. It was looking at the imprint of a turkey the woman noted an odd protrusion from the body of the tree, something that looked surprisingly like a handle. Tilting her head, she leaned forward. “What...is that?” she murmured, before sliding from her war horse's back, light footing over the leaves and branches underfoot in order to approach the carving, aiming to get a better look.
However, she never reached her destination.
As she made it closer the turkey, her peripheral vision caught movement, and she spun on the spot. A grinning orange face, emblazoned onto the tree a few feet from her position, swung open, revealing a pitch black hole beyond. Taken by surprise, Mulan could only stare, mouth agape – and seconds later, found herself pulled from her feet by an invisible force, far stronger than any she had ever felt, causing her to tumble toward it.
Though she fought and flailed, and though Khan whinnied and stamped his hooves upon the ground, the darkness she was tugged toward quickly engulfed her, leaving Mulan to fall through nothingness as the light of the wood she'd been in was cut off – and she landed with a hard thud on an unforgiving ground, groaning as a dull ache spread through her body.
For a long few moments, she lay where she'd fallen, eyes closed. It was laboriously that she opened them, to sights quite unlike any she'd ever seen...

The ragdoll ambled down an outlying lane of Halloween Town that wove through a series of hills that separated the city proper from a band of woods on one side. She hummed a song that the street-side band often played at her request and swung a covered basket laden with procured mushrooms on her long arm. One of the many stray felines that was fond of Sally strutted along several feet ahead as some form of chaperone.
Sally's mind was on other things when a strange sound, like a harsh wind (though there was none that evening) came from nearby. She stopped, mouth opening in perplexed wonder. Then there was a shape dropped out of thin air to land with a thud on the top of the nearest hillock. The cat accompanying Sally gave a hiss, hair standing on end, and bolted off into the gathering dark.
Left alone, she hinged on whether or not to investigate herself or to go tell Jack so they could do so together. Hearing a very nonthreatening groan made Sally's mind for her. Picking her way up the hill from the lane she'd been on, Sally came upon something that very surely didn't belong in Halloween Town. Her brow furrowed and questions skipped through her head, but they could wait.
"Excuse me," Sally said softly, holding the handle of her basket with both hands in front of her. She peered down at what was very clearly a human and bit her bottom lip anxiously. "Are you all right?"
Mulan's vision swam for a moment, and through that haze came a voice – soft and anxious – asking if she was alright. Still dazed, the Emperor's vassal nodded, scrunching up her features and closing her eyes, counting to four in her head, hoping it would help steady her sight. When she opened them again, things were much clearer – or as clear as the apparent gloom allowed them to be – and her gaze fixated on a pale woman who peered down at her.
Blinking twice, Mulan struggled to register the other's pale, cloth-like skin, the stitches that ran the length of her mouth and the odd, rather inhuman proportions she bore. All she could do for a moment was stare, her mind trying to process the scene that confronted her. When it finally did so, she let off a quick 'Aaaah!' of shock – not quite a shout or a scream – and pushed herself up, scrambling backward across the floor until her back pressed to something hard.
Then, she froze. In some instances, when in a strangle land and surprised by something outlandish, Mulan may have gone for her sword – not that she had her sword with her. However, though startled by her odd appearance, she didn't feel any malice radiating from the woman – quick enough to sense that even through her momentary bout of confusion and fright.
That didn't mean she would be letting her eyes wander from the ragdoll – though she couldn't help but notice the shadows of crooked buildings beyond, nor the strange markers that littered the hills between, laid out almost like graves. “W...what....where...” Jumbled words fell from Mulan's mouth, until she took a deep breath and steadied herself, finding her courage and shaking off the disorientation the fall had caused. “Where am I?” she asked finally, her voice calmer and more level than before. “Am...I dreaming?” she finished, raising a brow and quickly pinching the back of her hand, wincing a little when it hurt.

Sally's first and foremost concern in that moment was to make sure that this stranger wasn't injured or in any way hurt. The human woman nodded, but was still obviously disoriented, and so Sally's worry wasn't quite put to rest. She watched the stranger closely as she opened her eyes and looked around, finally focusing on Sally standing before her. The human gave a cry of startled surprise and scrambled backward, away from Sally.
Oh, dear. She'd been afraid of this. Sally's gestured with her hands, the basket sliding down into the crook of one arm, in an open-palmed show of surrender. "It's all right," she urged, but the woman still backed up. Until, that is, she had her back pressed against a headstone. It was the only one to adorn the top of the hill, though other grave markers lined the mound's sides and filled the folds in the land around it.
Sally didn't know how this human had come to be in Halloween Town (though she had a fair guess), but she needed to get her to calm down. She had known some humans to die of fright, and was determined to not let this one do so. Being dropped into the home of the monsters of Halloween certainly qualified as reason enough to be scared, and so Sally was very compassionate about the woman's plight.
The ragdoll also wanted to quiet the human's panic to make sure she didn't attract unwanted attention. Sally didn't know what kind of commotion having a human in their midst would cause in the townsfolk. She had the passing - and, actually, not unrealistic - thought that all of the resident monsters might fall into the habits their jobs required. Any mortal faced with the combined scare tactics of all of Halloween was bound to have their sanity endangered.
To further the image of peacefulness, Sally lowered down onto her knees and didn't come any closer. She settled her basket on the grey grass beside her and kept her hands up for good measure. The woman regained her wits enough to form words and Sally's large eyes looked soothingly down at her. "You're fine- it's fine," she reassured quickly. "This isn't a dream, but you aren't in any danger. My name's Sally and this is-"
Sally was interrupted by a muffled voice that seemed to be coming from somewhere under the soil that she and the human were kneeling and sitting on. "What's all that racket?!" The ragdoll gave an apologetic look to the woman and leaned forward, holding her red, yarn hair back with one hand and cupping the other to her mouth. "It's nothing, Mr Knickerbocker! Go back to sleep." Grumpy mumbling rose up to them, which gave way to soft snoring. Were the mortal to turn round, she'd see the name "Oswald Knickerbocker" engraved on the tombstone she was pressed against.
"This," Sally began again, "is Halloween Town." She turned to look over her shoulder at the collection of haunted manors, Gothic spires and terrifying edifices that made up the village.
