Participating Characters:Owen Burnett/Puck, Madam Mim Forum Location: The Eyrie Building Time of Day: Late Afternoon Weather: rainy, gray, cloudy, miserable Thread Location: The Castle Wyvern Premise: Mim is very surprised to find a castle up in the sky
The weather was terrible. The sky had been spitting cold rain all day and everything had taken on a gray tint. People rushed from one place to the next with their collars pulled up and their umbrellas open. It was a day everyone agreed would have been better spent in bed.
Everyone except for Mad Madam Mim. This was her favorite sort of day: a day without sunshine. She’d spent most of the morning perched on a street lamp (an oddly pink-colored pigeon) watching passers-by get hit with spray from passing taxis and busses. She’d laughed until she’d had tears in her feathers as well as rain.
Eventually she did get bored of it, however, and moved on. She flew through the city, higher and higher, and eventually transformed into an eagle. She flapped her wings and grunted with the effort until she found an updraft between the buildings. It took her up into the clouds.
She’d been thinking about where she might go next when suddenly she smacked right into a solid stone wall. She shrieked with rage and fell down a few feet, landing in a heap of pink feathers and waving talons. Finally, she righted herself and realized she was sitting in the foggy courtyard of a castle.
Her beady green eyes squinted in thought as she tried to make sense of what had happened. After a moment she got to her feet and transformed into her usual revolting self.
“A castle in a cloud!” She put her fists on her hips and sneered. This seemed like the stupid kind of thing Merlin was always doing. Maybe he was here?

It was a terribly dull, gloomy day in New York, thought Owen Burnett to himself as he regarded his sleeping charge. Alexander lay remarkably silent in slumber in the bed. His parents were absent, busy with other matters, the gargoyles lay asleep, and Detective Maza was, unless he'd misremembered her schedule, in bed as well.
Why not liven up this boring day, he thought to himself. It had been some time since Alexander's last lesson in magic, and this seemed to be a perfect opportunity-wait.
His ears flickered at a sound. From the courtyard, it seemed. A high, piercing shriek that sounded quite unlike any thunder he'd ever experienced. A magic lesson would have to wait, it seemed.
With speed and efficiency, he changed into a raincoat and galoshes, moving outside in them with an umbrella. In the courtyard, he was greeted with a very strange sight indeed: An old woman, dressed in a gaudy purple-and-pink outfit, with equally purple hair atop her head. An intruder of some kind, no doubt.
Owen cleared his throat. "This is indeed a castle in a cloud," he said, going off what he'd heard her say, "but I'm afraid you do not have permission to be here, and the castle is currently closed to tourists. Please vacate the premises or I will be forced to call security."

Mim spun around when Owen spoke, fully expecting to find Merlin there. Instead, it was just a man in a raincoat. She was already in a sour mood from smacking into a stone wall and this guy’s haughty tone wasn’t helping. “Permission!” She marched right up to him, arms swinging, and jabbed a finger at his stomach. “I’ll do whatever I like, Sonny! And just you try to stop me!”
Just who did he think he was, telling her what to do? Threatening her? Oh! The nerve! After she found Merlin and gave him ten kinds of hell, she’d come back for this one and teach him a lesson too, one he would not soon forget.
The witch took a step back and her tone changed completely. Before, she’d sounded like a mad woman with rabies. Now, she took on a more codling tone, her voice sweeter. She smiled pleasantly up at Owen. “But… if you would take me to Merlin, I might be persuaded to play nice.”
As if to drive the point home that she could be civil, Mim grabbed the edges of her dress and bobbed down into a curtsy. “I am the Marvelous Madam Mim. Merlin and I have a history. A long, long history. I’m sure he’s just dying to see me.”

Owen stiffened slightly as the woman barged up to him, yelling in her scratchy voice that she certainly didn't need permission. And she was babbling about Merlin, was she?
Were Owen a mere, ordinary human, he might dismiss this Madam Mim's ramblings as pure poppycock, a fantasy. But he wasn't, of course. "All things are true," as the saying went. And while King Arthur himself, at least the one he knew of, was currently active in this world, he'd certainly never heard of this woman. But then, the second part of the old saying came to mind: "Few things are accurate."
The barest sliver of a crafty smile began to move onto Owen's lips. This Mim, whoever she really was, could prove to be quite a threat if she counted the mighty Merlin as a colleague. And she certainly didn't seem to be wanting to leave willingly. And Alexander was in his charge and protection, was he not?
He removed his glasses and put them in his pocket. "Unfortunately, Merlin does not make residence at this castle, but there may be someone else you might be interested to meet." With a snap of his fingers, a puff of smoke surrounded him in the rain and a higher, booming voice echoed from within: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LIVE FROM CASTLE WYVERN, IIIIIIIIIIIT'S....."
The smoke dissipated to reveal a much smaller man, floating in mid-air with a shock of long white hair and pointed ears, dressed in eclectic clothing and with an ever-present smirk on his face.
Post by Madam Mim on Sept 17, 2017 20:38:05 GMT -5
Mim waited expectantly, watching as he removed his glasses. When the stranger admitted that Merlin wasn’t there, Mim’s eyebrows came together in a glare. She would have yelled and shrieked that he was lying — because there was a castle in the air, and who else could be to blame but Merlin??— but before she could there was a burst of smoke and a very different voice.
Mim felt the magic coming from him then. It made her fingertips prickle. She squinted at the floating man.
“Puck? Puck WHO?” Despite the entrance, Mim wasn’t impressed. She didnt know who he was, though judging by his pointy ears he was probably some kind of fairy.
Mim shook her head and crossed her arms over her chest. “No. Bring back the other one. The one that wore the glasses. I wanted to play with him a little.”
There was a low rumble of thunder and Mim looked up and into the mist around them. It began to rain again, harder now. Mim bent and picked up the umbrella Owen had dropped and held it over her head. Now she noticed a few doors and windows leading out from the courtyard. She lifted a hand to her mouth and yelled. "MERLIN? MeeeerrrLIN! Come out and face me you old goat!"
Post by Owen Burnett/Puck on Sept 18, 2017 21:22:46 GMT -5
A high, mocking laugh escaped the floating man's lips as he somehow managed to escape getting wet from the rain. "Oh, Puck is just one of many names I have, my dear woman," he said. "I am a hobgoblin, a child of Oberon, a Robin Goodfellow." A wide grin. "And those are just my favorites. Humans can be such wonderfully creative creatures!"
She seemed to have little recognition of who he was, and he was more than a little put out by that. "Now the next question of course is, who are you? I know a Merlin, but I've certainly never heard of the likes of you. I think I'd remember if I did; you have a presence like a bug zapper."
And now she was more interested in Owen? What a curious woman indeed. "I'm afraid, Madam, that my better half was correct. You're more than trespassing, and we don't have your Merlin, or any Merlins, really. That...." And his smile grew wicked. "...I'm currently only able to take this form to teach or protect my young charge. The lovely little brat is sleeping, and if you insist on making SUCH a drenched-in-purple racket...."
His hair began to flow and fingers crackled with energy. "I may have to teach you a lesson."
The imp who had named himself Puck laughed in a way that made Mim’s hair stand on end. She detested being laughed at. The only thing that kept her from becoming a wolverine and viciously attacking him was what he said next. Some of those names were indeed familiar to her. Now he had her interest. They were names out of legend, mostly, but given the magic she could feel from him, she was willing to take him at his word.
He asked who she was and Mim harrumphed when he admitted to knowing Merlin but not her. “Merlin…” She growled his name. “That ninny is nothing compared to me!” She lay her hand over her heart and stuck out a foot, striking a pose with the umbrella still held over her head with her free hand. “Why, I am the Marvelous Mad Madam Mim, of course! The greatest witch the world has ever seen… this world, and all the others.” Mim stiffed haughtily, her nose in the air.
Puck insisted that Merlin wasn’t there and Mim was inclined to believe him, simply because if Merlin had been there he would have already nosed his way into their business. She grudgingly let go of her hopes of revenge, for the time being.
Then, just as Mim was about to give up on having any excitement that night, the floating fae gave her a wolfish grin. Mim narrowed her eyes shrewdly.
“Oh, a lesson is it, sonny?” She chuckled darkly and folded the umbrella. She rested the top of it on the pavement and folded both her hands on its folded cane, her feet braced wide as she glared up at him. Mim could feel his power, but she wasn’t afraid. She was mad, after all, and quite powerful herself. “I’d much prefer a game. A game where lets say… the winner eats your sleeping brat?”
Post by Owen Burnett/Puck on Oct 10, 2017 21:03:53 GMT -5
Puck resisted the urge to roll his eyes as the woman shrieked and boasted about being the greatest witch the worlds had ever seen. He knew that it was unwise to underestimate people, and if she was a contemporary of Merlin, well, that proved she had some skill, certainly.
And often, the most dangerous things could come in deceptive packages. His current "employer" was proof enough of that.
But an eyebrow did quirk at an offer of a game. He did so very much love games, and she was ornery enough that it would be fun to rile her up.
"Well, I'm quite afraid I can't risk you eating him, my dear," he said, floating closer to her as the rain started to taper off. "But a game does sound positively delightful."
The power had stopped floating off his fingers, but the grin was still in place as he stared her down. "How about I set the stakes, while you propose the rules? Let's say....loser has to do the other's bidding for one week's time. That's ALWAYS a classic."
It was low-stakes enough that he could deal with it in terms of his usual work. Xanatos Enterprises ran smoothly enough now that Owen Burnett could afford to take a vacation, and the gargoyles would be on hand to protect and possibly even teach young Alexander.
Puck floated closer and admitted that a game sounded interesting, even if he did not agree to her suggestion for the prize. He remained floating above her and as he drifted closer Mim had to tilt her head back to see him properly.
The fae proposed a different reward for the winner and Mim narrowed her beady green eyes at him, considering. “My slave for a week, you say?” The purple-haired witch considered the possibilities. Then, as a thought occurred to her, she raised her eyebrows and pointed at him. “One week! No matter what face you wear or personality you hide behind.” Mim broke into a delighted mad cackle. “I want the one with the glasses to rub my feet!!”
Now she was very excited indeed. She took a few steps away from Puck. In fact, she was practically skipping. She stopped and spun around to face him again.
“A chase! If I catch you, I win. oooo hoo hoo!”
She studied him floating there for a moment and considered the rules.
“No flying!” She jabbed an accusing finger at him. Sure, Mim could fly too, but a chase in the air would likely take them outside the castle... and Mim didn't think Puck would play along if they ventured too far from the sleeping child he had to protect.

She wanted Owen's practical services, eh? The smirk widened. "But of course, marvelous madam," he said, sneer fully in place. "My better half would find no greater joy than performing such a task."
Sad thing was, that was more true than he was letting on: Owen could question and raise points, yes, but he was utterly devoted, enough that it'd rubbed off enough on Puck to get him into this kind of mess in the first place.
"A chase? Hmmm. Yes, I think that'll be rather spirited between the two of us. And no flying?" He floated to the ground, with his feet touching in a typical flourish. "Done."
"Now for my own parameters: we stay inside this castle and its grounds for the duration of our merry hunt, and if you set one toenail outside of it, the game's off, and then the real fun can begin."
He wouldn't apply that rule to himself, of course; he had every intention of playing fair in a more-or-less sacred game like this. Her, he wasn't so certain. She definitely had a few screws loose, to use a human expression.
Turning, he assumed a posture any Olympic runner would envy. "Shall we begin, then?"
The imp agreed that, should Mim win, any version of him would cary out the week of tasks. Mim was satisfied. Regardless of who won today, things would likely be pretty tense after a week was completed. They’d probably try to kill one another again. Considering this, Mim thought of a loop hole and jabbed another finger at Punk. “One week starting directly after the winner is determined! None of this…” She waved her hands dismissively… “… one week in a million years, or what have you.”
Puck agreed to her proposed game and her rule of no flying. He then added his own, that they must remain within the castle. Mim gave him a cheery grin, though through was a decidedly malicious glint in her green eyes. She clasped her hands together under her chin. “OH it has been AGES since I’ve had a proper chase! Oh-hohoho!”
Puck then turned his back on the old woman and crouched as if he would begin running. Mim backed up a few paces, bouncing on the balls of her feet, and chuckled darkly. She began to change then, taking on the semblance of a large pink cat (panther or cougar, perhaps) and scraped her sharp violet claws against the cobblestones.
“I’ll give ya a head start. Ten seconds!” Again she gave a mad shriek of laughter. “Ten… nine… eight…”
As she counted, she lowered herself into position to spring after him, her ears pinned back, her tail swishing back and forth behind her.
Post by Owen Burnett/Puck on Oct 23, 2017 23:22:55 GMT -5
"My dear woman, are you suggesting that I, the honorable Puck, would cheat or twist your words in an ironclad agreement?" he practically gasped, putting an affronted hand to his chest.
And then the ever-present smirk returned. "Well, you're right. You just might be a worthy opponent for me."
He glanced behind him, seeing that she was transforming into a large cat, a one with pink fur at that. They hadn't ruled out any magic or transformations outside of no flying, after all, so it was perhaps to be expected.
Still....it was clear she was more dangerous than he had initially given her credit for. Which had been a little foolish of him, he supposed; was he not someone who hid behind jokes and facades to mask his own darker nature at times.
Nothing to be helped for it now, admittedly. Not wasting any time as she counted down, he darted off, limbs powerful and fluid even with the lack of flying power juicing them. The castle was quite large and there were a number of good places to hide, but he'd need something open if he wanted to truly fight back.
The library, perhaps. That had plenty of wide spaces. And so he headed there, mentally preparing incantations to throw at her once she caught up.
Puck took off, his skinny legs a blur. Mim chuckled, her claws tapping on the cobblestones.
“Six… he-hee! Five… Four…Three-heee—”
Mim didn’t bother to finish counting. She sprang forward, transformed into a hare mid-leap, and sped after the trickster. The pink hare was an ugly thing— pudgy with stumpy ears— but it was FAST.
“Ahh-hahaa!” Mim continued to cackle, gaining ground and keeping Puck within sight. He’d better come up with something else, and soon, or this race would be over before she knew it. Where was the fun in that?
If Puck was who he claimed to be, a child of Avalon, Mim knew he was more dangerous than he seemed, even if he did appear to be shackled to a boy-child for some idiotic reason. If she humiliated him here, he would probably be a bitter enemy.
A part of Mim’s rat’s nest of a brain knew this. Sadly, the rest of it didn’t care.
They were running through doorways and down hallways now. "Oh, I'll get you! I'll get you and I'll make sure you never forget the name of Mad Madame Mim!" She crowed in triumph and lunged at Puck's heels just as they entered a huge room full of books.
Post by Owen Burnett/Puck on Oct 26, 2017 0:20:37 GMT -5
He heard her poof behind him and briefly checked to see that she'd turned into a thoroughly hideous rabbit. "Eugh," he muttered, "couldn't go for a nicer wabbit?" And bunnies were hardly the most pleasurable sight in his opinion normally. This one was distorted and hideous.
The library was vast and cavernous, with plenty of room to work his will. Suits of armor (acquired by Xanatos more for aesthetic when groups came in for tours than anything else; they were the wrong country AND time period). He dodged her snipping at his heels as she cackled in triumph. "My dear Madame," he said, "I don't think I could possibly forget you and we've been acquainted for roughly five minutes."
His eyes began to glow with powerful white energy once more and wind swirled around him, rattling the books on the shelves. His voice became imbued with an ancient force, dark and powerful, as he cast a spell:
"Wicked hag who comes for pleasure Let us take this game at leisure You have chased and I am found But now let your true form be bound!"
With that, his eyes blasted her, hoping to revert her back to her regular form. And his hands worked in the air with minute gestures. In a flash, the suits of armor came to life, circling around her with spears and swords drawn. One had a pair of decidedly nasty looking iron manacles.
Here was hoping she followed the same rules as his kind.
He dodged her at the last moment and Mim slid across the polished wood floor, fuzzy pink paws scrambling for purchase as she slid between two huge rows of books. She shrieked in dismay and crashed into another shelf, a few books raining down on her.
What emerged from the pile of books was not a rabbit but a huge ugly pink spider with Mim’s head and mop of purple hair. Giggling like mad, she scrambled up the shelves.
Mim felt the change in the room’s energy and, looking down from where she skulked on top of a shelf, she watched with some curiosity as he began to weave his spell and at the last moment changed into a fat ugly hermit crab. She popped into her shell as she was blasted farther back into the library.
When she emerged from the shell (which was smoking slightly from Puck’s blast) she saw that she was surrounded by bewitched armor. “Ha! Substitutiaty Locomotion, eh? Or something close enough.” She sounded impressed, even speaking with the strange mouth of a hermit crab. “NOW things are getting interesting!”
Mim changed shapes again, her form ballooning into that of a lowland gorilla. She grabbed one of the suits of armor and hurled it into another, cackling gleefully.
