So he wasn't a pirate now but had almost been one. Quite probably an interesting story there, but Owen felt he'd (mostly) pried enough. If Jim wanted to say more, he would or wouldn't.
"I see," was all he ultimately said to that comment.
For now, he focused on Morph, who had....well, "morphed" into a tiny version of himself. The likeness was uncannily perfect; it reminded him a great deal of his own transformation, as well as ones he used under the guise of his better half. Indeed, "uncanny" was exactly the right word for it. There was something off and unnatural, if still quite intriguing, about the stony visage staring back at him. "I'm quite used to that sort of thing," he deadpanned off of Jim's comment that the little creature was a show-off. And....a one-eyed pirate? "It appears that some cliches hold true even in this brave new world we find ourselves in," he commented, stopping at the light and flicking the turn signal on. This was the last block before the library. "I suppose this man was the cause of your nearly taking up piracy as a career option, then?"
A fairly reasonable observation, and one that he might be deigned to answer.

Owen didn’t press the issue and Jim was thankful for that. Morph was a welcome distraction from a serious conversation, and yet somehow they’d landed on the topic of Silver, which for Jim was just as bad, if not worse.
Why hadn’t he just kept his big mouth shut?
“Used to it?” Jim arched a brow. It seemed like nothing phased this guy at all. “… what’s your story, anyway? Are you some kind of… primitive AI?” The technology around this kingdom was ancient (at least compared to what Jim was used to). Maybe Owen was what passed for artificial intelligence around here.
Owen’s comment gave Jim pause. “Cliche? What, are one eye’d pirates common around here?” If so, he’d severely underestimated New York Town. Jim shook his head. “Doesn’t matter. The one I knew was a cyborg. There’s no way he’d be able to walk around this place and not draw attention.”
Jim was petting Morph absently, a sad, hard look in his eyes. Morph looked up at him and gave a quiet murmur, almost a coo, and nuzzled into his palm.
“He asked.” Jim tilted his head, turning his face away from Owen, pretending to look at something out the window. Jim did not regret declining Silver’s offer. He knew still in his heart it was the right thing to do, which was something, considering how backwards everything was. Still, sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder what Silver would make of all this… what he’d make of Jim. Would he be proud of him still, or disappointed that he had done so little in the time they'd been apart?

Oh, now that was a good one. The smirk grew wider, and if he had been in another form, he would have laughed himself silly. But he was nothing if not a method actor. "Hardly. I am merely quite familiar with various forms of magic and science that contribute to the existence of beings like your little friend. Were I actually an artificial intelligence, you would be quite aware."
Not a lie at all, and it handily obscured his own actual identity in ways that Jim couldn't even begin to guess at. That, and it'd keep him wondering, asking more questions. Although, he thought, perhaps not actually, since they were beginning to arrive at their destination, the library in sight now.
He began to pull in front of it. "Not precisely common in reality, but popular culture tends to signify them as such," was his first observation. And then....hrmmm. A cyborg?
Why did that almost seem to ring a bell? As the car came to a stop, he remembered actually now that in Manhattan, a popular sit-down restaurant had hired a cyborg from another realm. He'd not seen much of the fellow at a business dinner he'd attended, but he'd certainly recalled someone with a distinct yellow eye, a peg leg, and a multipurpose robot arm gregariously regaling customers with delivered meals. "What you say is true," he admitted, "though you may find that various colorful characters like your friend have found homes here."

Jim gave Owen a skeptical look. “If you say so. Now calm down before you hurt yourself.” A full smirk. That had to be the most emotion Jim had seen on Owen’s face yet, and that included almost running him over and meeting an alien.
Owen pulled the car up to the curb and Jim looked out at the huge building and the large stone lion sculptures flanking the stairs. Morph saw the lions too and made an excited chirping noise. “They’re just statues.” Jim carefully scooped Morph up and coaxed the blob back into his bag. Then he reached for the door and climbed out.
Standing on the curb, Jim turned to face the limo. He regarded Owen for a moment and then hitched his bag up on his shoulder. “Thanks for the ride.”
The city was huge. Jim was sure it would have taken him hours to find this place without Owen's help. He tipped his head back and looked at the huge skyscrapers up and down the street. There were people everywhere, but thankfully no hotdog vendors to tempt Morph from his hiding place. Jim would have to look into getting the blob a snack before they went inside, otherwise he would never stay quiet.

The smirk became something warmer as he rolled down the window. "Yes, I shall try to hold in my excitement." The full deadpan was back now, and he listened to Jim murmur something to Morph, then thank him for the ride. "It was no trouble at all," he insisted. "Good day to you, Jim. I sincerely hope that you find whatever you're looking for. Though if you're looking for your friend, I might suggest the Black Horse tavern? A cyborg has been working there as a chef."
With a final nod, he rolled the window back up and shifted the car back into gear, moving back into traffic as he did so.
That had certainly been an interesting encounter, he thought to himself. A boy from the stars who'd nearly become a pirate and had a pink transforming blob for a pet.
He'd met a number of young people like Jim: gloomy, disaffected, never quite sure what they wanted in the world except that they wanted. But it seemed that at least on some level, he'd figured it out, and if rejecting becoming a pirate was any indication, he had a strong moral fiber that would perhaps serve him well in this brave new world that had such wonders and terrors in it.
As he began driving back to the Eyrie Building, one thing was ever-present in his mind: they might never meet again, but wherever young master Jim happened to be, interesting things were bound to happen
David Xanatos: Kat's back. Hope the vacation was fun.
