"Trespassing?" Basil stood up shakily, the table rocking from his point of view. "I'll have the three of you know that as an Agent of the Crown it is my duty to inspect suspicious characters like yourself."
The detective pointed an accusing finger, trying to follow the wavering triple vision of Facilier.
"and characters like yourself. All smoke and mirrors and....smoke. I don't know what anyone would come here for. I have half a mind to escort this young lady from the premises and..."
Basil turned to look at Ariel, noticing the concern she was expressing along with some kind of desperation. Clearly she'd had a very good reason for coming to see the Doctor and it wasn't the mouse's place to get in the way until she'd found what she was looking for. If anything he should be helping, or at least keeping out of the way until he was needed.
"and I'm going to trust her judgement on this. So I'll sit her quietly and I expect you to give her exactly what she asks for."
It took a few seconds to sit down, unbalanced as he was. When he finally did he nodded to Ariel, indicating that she could continue with her own business. He'd leave it to the Princess to give Facilier any details she wanted, her initial letter only going so far as to ask for Basil to meet her in Louisiana with all haste. Normally he'd demand all information but he still didn't trust the Shadow man, so he'd have to catch up. Though if anything shady did happen he'd have a few well chosen words.
"I'll be fine in a while. You don't get into my line of business without a few druggings. Nothing a few controlled doses at home to build tolerance won't help. Though perhaps someone could quiet down that wolf?"
The Shadow Man's film of charisma seemed far too smug from Ariel's point of view as he explained breezily what had happened to Basil. She hadn't liked the voodoo man the moment that she'd set eyes on him. The stories surrounding him, Ariel thought, were probably true. Even the most outlandish which, when compared to her past as the princess of an aquatic kingdom of merpeople, weren't so hard to grapple with. The Shadow Man was at ease, but that was part of his character. Ariel didn't know how much of his indifference was an act to assert an air of confidence that helped him sucker his costumers into sour deals, and how much was actually genuine. She didn't much care. She wanted to get Basil and herself out of that shop as quickly as possible.
For the first time since entering it, Ariel felt more than unease. She realized then that if this Doctor Facilier had potions that could turn Basil - a genius mouse detective - into a bumbling, hallucinating mess, then there was no telling what other foul elements were at his disposal. Ariel understood that she could be in possible danger. Were she made to guess, the princess would have assumed that the Shadow Man would not harm her... Simply put, it didn't seem like his style. He wouldn't do anything directly. He was more clever than that. No, Facilier was a businessman, Ariel thought. He would do whatever he could to try to salvage a deal and a client. Although, the princess admitted to herself that she didn't know what this stranger was really capable of. That ignorance chilled her blood.
Strong as the urge to grab Basil and flee was, the little mouse reminded her that there was a reason for being there in the first place. Desperation was what drove Ariel. Anything less and she would never have entertained the thought of seeking the aid of a person who had earned the sinister name "the Shadow Man" by everyone in Louisianatown. Ariel's fists pressed more tightly, showing her knuckles as alabaster against porcelain. She needed a way to Atlantica. Ariel didn't know why she was taking on this responsibility entirely alone. She could have gone to the Council of Three, or Eric at the least. There could be so many possibilities for her father's scarcity other than what she assumed.
Foreboding reared up again within Ariel, as it always did when she went down this route of thought. No. Something did not feel right about it all. Selfish, foolish, reckless. Whatever the case may be, Ariel believed that she needed to first try to address the dark situation by herself. That was why instead of going to Merlin or any of the inherently pure sources of magic throughout Rohandor for a solution, she'd come here. To this seedy little closet of a newer addition to the realm. To this man, that she thought she disliked with her entire being. Ariel stood there struggling with everything. She lowered her fists, but did not unfurl her fingers, and left them shaking with deliberation at her sides.
Ariel felt her eyes burn with rising tears. Her frustration mounted, and then? Her hands went limp. Her chin dipped and she closed her eyes in defeat. Ariel brought up one of her palms and let it rest atop the table beside Basil. She lifted her gaze and let it fall upon the Shadow Man, resigned to ask what she had come there to request. Making eye contact with him again, though, left Ariel feeling very strange. As though she had missed a step and been deeply affronted all at the same time. Defiance leaped into her chest like a sudden tidal wave. "This was a mistake," she said, seemingly to herself. Ariel scowled at Doctor Facilier, then turned to Basil with a softening of her features. "Come on, Basil. Let's get out of here." She turned her hand face up to allow him to crawl onto her palm.

Facilier watched the young woman's face as her emotions warred across it. It was clear that she was torn between asking Facilier about the real reason she'd come here and simply leaving. And the Shadow Man knew he couldn't let the Princess leave, not like this, not when she was still so ... desperate.
It was a pity his Shadow had sprayed her little mouse friend when it had; it was apparent that the mouse's hallucinating had sped up the girl's mistrust of him. He was going to have to work to repair that, and quickly, or she would leave.
But what could induce her to stay? She was clearly there for a purpose, but just what, he hadn't quite figured out. Even as the girl was warring with herself, Facilier was quickly thinking about all he knew about Princess Ariel of the Shell Kingdom.
The kingdom from which she hailed was coastal; it was surrounded by oceans. And in those oceans there were merpeople. It was even said that she had once been a mermaid, herself. Her true people, then, lay under the ocean. And she could only see them if they came to her.
There were rumors that the merfolk's leader was missing. And if his information and reading of this young woman was correct, she was far more concerned than simply a citizen would be. Which meant that she had more of a stake in the leader's disappearance than most. Ah, yes, she was a Princess twice over; once by marrying her husband, and once through her own lineage.
As the young woman stood to leave, Facilier leaned forward on the table. "By all means, Princess, whatever makes you comfortable," he said, watching her carefully. "But if you leave now, you won't get your precious fins back." It was a long shot, but what did he have to lose, at this point?

Basil nodded his support as Ariel decided that she'd find what she needed elsewhere, standing up and feeling around her fingers to try and find her offered hand. His senses were slowly returning but he'd be grateful for the help getting around until he was one hundred percent.
"Good day to you Doctor."
The detective still couldn't get the full picture of what exactly Facilier could provide. He put no stock in magic or the supernatural so the whole situation put him off. The trinkets around the shop, even the decor with the low lighting, sinister masks on the wall and odd snake and skull carvings on the high back chairs around the table. Even the Doctor himself was a contradiction in looks. His suit, hat and shoes were very dapper and invoked a high class look but the skull marking on the hat and bone necklace were like warning labels. His voice was flattering, welcoming and snakelike, similar to most con artists who'd build you up with compliments while poking at your emotional vulnerable points. Then he made his last offer before Ariel left.
Fins? Basil had researched the Shell Kingdom after his first meeting with Princess Ariel, coastal, lots of shipping, her romance with Prince Eric beginning with her rescuing him from a near drowning. His research hadn't covered Atlantica though, Ariel's early life as a mermaid or her contract with the witch Ursula. Again his lack of experience in magic affairs had left a blind spot in his knowledge. The mouse looked between Ariel and Facilier for some context or an explanation, since every path of logic he put together led back to no clear answer.
"I'm sorry. What's this about fins? Is it some belonging of hers that you have?"
Through his delirium Basil approved of Ariel's choice. That, more than anything that she had been internalizing, assured in the princess that she was making the best choice. Maybe not the easiest, or the swiftest, but the best one nevertheless. Basil teetered onto Ariel's hand and her worry for him only increased. He was acting more or less like a blind mouse, feeling the digits she offered, then gingerly easing onto her palm. Ariel's brow crinkled slightly in a show of this worry. She slowly raised her hand once Basil was settled and braced it by placing her other hand beneath the first.
Ariel pointedly did not look at the Shadow Man again. She moved passed him, descended the few steps of the dais that the table was situated on and walked purposefully through the shop toward the door. Ariel knew that she had to move quickly. Making the choice to abandon this attempt, when the possibility of a solution was so close, had been nearly beyond her. Ariel needed to get out of there. Away from the Shadow Man. She hoped that he would respect her decision, or be too flummoxed by it to voice a reply until after she'd left. Ariel told herself that there was no way this shady character could give her what she needed, anyway. No way. She was wasting her time.
The last few words that Doctor Facilier had to say struck Ariel blind when she was an inch from the front door, and salvation through it. The princess stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes were wide. Basil asked a question, but Ariel found she couldn't pick apart the syllables and make sense of what he said. She stayed put, dazed and stunned. She didn't even breathe. Ariel felt tears well in her eyes. Fighting between folly and filial piety. She swallowed audibly and closed her eyes, casting a single tear down her cheek.
Ariel smiled, though her lip quivered, at her dear, dear friend. "It's nothing, Basil. Let's get out of here." She shouldered open the door without saying anything to the Doctor - without even looking back. Ariel knew she could not risk it. She had to hurry through the streets of Louisianatown, thinking of a different way (a right way) to solve her problems, and floundering beneath the weight of the suspicion that she was betraying her people; her family. Maybe it was time to ask for help from her friends, instead of strangers? Ariel bit her lip and looked at Basil. Maybe it was time to stop this silly notion of going it alone?
