The night air felt good. Great really. Sure it was starting to get a little damp what with the cloud formation and impending forecasted rain, but there was little that could sour Brooklyn’s mood at that moment. Though there might be some days that he longed for the home and family long since lost in the passage of time, he embraced his good fortune at being able to experience all the sights and sounds that this century had to offer.
Like action movies.
There was nothing like a good explosion to get the blood going. Well, fake or otherwise safely set so that no one got hurt. Not that a real explosion didn’t but that was for an entirely different reason. Movies like Fast Cars 4 were good old fashion- er, present time fun. It was true he always had to sneak in whether it was through the ceiling to hide up in the roof or attempt to cover up as best as possible and come in through the front. Usually he chose the former. It was less complicated and well… cheaper.
And a lot safer now that the world knew that he and his clan existed. Really he shouldn’t have gone off on his own even just to see a movie. It benefited all of them to try and travel in pairs at least. With all the crazy people out there hunting them for any number of reasons from fear to vanity sometimes Brooklyn didn’t even feel like leaving the castle. It was really surreal that the safest place for them in the entire city was their original home even though it was now located in the home of someone Brooklyn would never be able to fully trust.
Though it hadn’t started raining yet, Brooklyn could feel his skin begin to moisten as his wings sliced through the low hanging clouds. He could see the base of the castle ever perched on top of the Eyrie building looming in the distance. The clouds obscured much of the higher towers of the structure but Brooklyn was able to see well enough to land.
He shifted the angle of his wings to slow his decent just before his feet touched the cold stone of the castle’s main courtyard. He trotted a few steps forward to slow his momentum and then looked around. No one was back yet. The movie might have been late for humans, a midnight showing, but that was prime evening for the gargoyles. Even a few hours later it was still early to be back. He knew the others had gone off on patrol or whatever else they were up to that night and probably wouldn’t be back for a while. He was surprised at how empty everything felt with just him walking the stone ramparts.
As he was deciding to see if he could steal the TV for a bit before Hudson returned, he froze. His ears perked up as he listened in silence. He had to be mistaken, but he was certain her could hear the sounds of …fighting coming from somewhere nearby. Somewhere inside the Eyrie building. Much as he didn’t trust Xanatos or his family the building itself was still part of his home and if there was danger anywhere inside, he would put a stop to it. Turning sharply Brooklyn dropped to all fours and raced towards the passageway that lead down into the rest of the building to investigate.
If there was an irony to the situation that she currently found herself in, it was that it might not have been entirely unwelcome. If Alex hadn’t been in danger with her, this was exactly the sort of relaxation that Fox had been craving. Stress relief was perhaps a better way of putting it, a chance to flex her muscles and test herself, as well as an enjoyable opportunity to run rings around the latest hapless oaf to think she was helpless. But that all depended on her being alone in the building – or at least the only one she cared about in the building. With her son present and under threat, Fox’s only thought was how she could remove the Quarrymen from the premises as quickly and efficiently as possible.
And how much she was going to hurt anyone who touched her son.
In short, there was no room for her to be rash, not when Alex’s life was at risk. David and Owen would be back that morning, so the Quarrymen obviously weren’t planning on staying. It irked Fox that she couldn’t see their motive for turning up now, when the Gargoyles were awake and absent, but she intended to think about that later. Maybe they were after David’s toys, though they’d be disappointed if they were – all of the fun weapons were locked up where intruders could not get to them.
Thus, the redhead had been sliding down the corridors as silently as possible in the dark clothes she'd quickly thrown on when she'd been awakened by the alarms, moving from shadow to shadow as she purposefully checked around her. From her experience, most of the Quarrymen were amateurs – bumbling noisy cannon-fodder that she could hear a floor away and outwit or outfight in her sleep. What made the organisation dangerous were the few trained mercenaries and soldiers that had joined and she had no intention of letting them sneak up on her while she hunted their friends.
First, however, she had to get to the nursery. And naturally the Quarrymen kept getting in her way.
Fox spun once, letting the momentum carry her foot into another man’s jaw, the impact taking him to the floor and into the relative safety of unconsciousness. She did not, however, have time to gloat – instead ducking quickly to avoid his colleague’s attempt to jump at her. A quick jab to his chin with the butt of her gun staggered him just long enough for her to turn the business end on him and stun him too. She tagged his friend again, just to be safe, before turning on her heel as the familiar sound of four feet scrabbling against stone reached her ears from around the next corner.
The other inhabitants of the castle had apparently arrived and, if the enemy of her enemy was not her friend, they were at least temporary pawns. Or allies, depending on which side of the manipulating you sat.
The redhead cocked an eyebrow at the gargoyle as it came around the corner, surveying it for a moment before smiling thinly at it.
Brooklyn’s feet carried him quickly across the stone courtyard of the castle and down the passage toward the interior of the Eyrie Building. The red gargoyle had no idea what he expected to find inside. He knew that both Fox and Xanatos liked to practice sparring with various opponents including one another, but he didn’t think that was a likely possibility. Not only was closing in on the early hours of dawn making it was doubtful the diurnal humans that resided there would be awake and active this late, but loud crashing noises weren't normal anywhere Brooklyn had ever called home.
No, there was most certainly something wrong. If his natural instincts didn’t clue him in, the alarms and stillness of the corridor would have been a tip off. Brooklyn paused, raising onto his hind legs. His sharp ears perked up, listening carefully. The sounds of fighting came to him from the far hallway and he once again dropped down on all fours and ran forward.
A little voice in the back of his mind pointed out that he should probably wait for reinforcements in case it was something beyond his control but he pushed it away. He remembered that Fox and Alex were here alone which meant that things should be quiet. He didn't doubt that Xanatos would have left some sort of defensive precautions behind but if something had gone wrong Fox and the baby could be in danger.
Brooklyn still didn't trust Fox much more than he trusted Demona. He still couldn't bring himself to trust Xanatos either, but he couldn't deny that he had been a man of his word to this point. Xanatos had been the one that was there to offer the clan protection and safety when the entire city was crying out for their blood. The one to offer them sanctuary by restoring to them their ancestral home. If nothing else he owed Xanatos and his family that same protection.
He rounded the corner not entirely certain what to expect and came to a halt at the sight before him, rising back onto his hind legs. Fox was standing over a small pile of- Brooklyn hoped- unconscious bodies. Though she wore dark clothes, his sharp gargoyle eyes could still see her a little better than humans without some sort of technological enhancement would be able to. Her expression was fierce though it softened as she addressed him in her easy cynical manner.
The red gargoyle's mouth cracked its own half smile at her jest, though it was more an afterthought and attempt to be civil than anything. He doubted Fox wanted them there any more than his clan liked sharing the building with her and her family. Instead of responding to her quip directly, he offered a dry observation of his own, "It's doesn't look like you needed my help." Brooklyn glanced around the hallway looking for any further threats coming but for the moment there didn't seem to be any.
He kept his senses peeked and turned back to Fox, "What's going on?" He asked as he leaned down over the unmoving forms on the ground. Even as Fox began speaking again he could feel his lips straining into a tight scowl. There was no mistaking the markings on the attacker's attire. "Quarrymen." He muttered under his breath. What in the world were they doing breaking into their home like this?
