She wasn't sure whose idea this had been, but it certainly wasn't hers. Back home, Nancy had seen enough psychics and other 'mystical' hippies wearing way too many beads. She's had her cards read, her stars mapped, her fortunes told. To call her a skeptic was taking it a bit lightly. So she was almost certain that this entire thing was Edward's idea.
He seemed to have a soft spot for magic, an understandable thing when you considered that his step-mother probably subjected him to it as a child. But this was ridiculous, even by his standards.
"And now, fair citizens of Andalasia, we have a treat! Please, welcome a wondrous entertainer; Dr. Facilier!"
The King made a wide gesture to the centre of the room, and a moment passed before there was a loud 'bang' and purple smoke pooled in the centre of the room. "Smoke bomb," Nancy muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes with a humoured smile at the delight of the party guests. Emerging from the smoke, came the man of the hour.
He was dressed in a gaudy purple suit, teeth of some animal hanging around his neck. He looked like the stereotypical witch doctor from the Saturday morning cartoons she'd watch as a kid-- the only thing he was missing was a bone through the nose or a grass skirt.
"And what will he do?" Nancy questioned, glancing to her side, "Read the cards and tell you your fortune? Edward, this sort of thing is a hoax..."
{Molly gave me permission to speak for Edward here...! She read it all before I posted, just in case.}

Facilier wasn't sure how the King of this place had heard of him, but he wasn't about to turn down such a lucrative job, despite the fact that he ... didn't usually travel to other cities, let alone a different isle to ply his trade.
But, King Edward had insisted upon it. He was throwing some sort of fancy to-do and wanted his guests to be thoroughly entertained.
If the rest of the country was as easy to impress as its ruler, this would be one of the easiest jobs he'd ever taken.
Even as he was making his entrance, he was observing the crowd, gathering as much information with simply his eyes as he could. When individuals came to him for readings, he'd be able to tell a lot more about each person, then.
Right now, though, it appeared as though he had to defend his reputation before he'd even had a chance to begin.
"Not at all, my Lady," Facilier said, in response to the Queen's comment. "I've met charlatans before and I can tell you that I am certainly not a crook."
Seemingly out of nowhere, Dr. Facilier produced his cane and leaned on it as he surveyed the royal couple.
"Would you rather I see to the guests or would you like to go first?"
He was going to have a hard time with the Queen; she seemed quite cynical about everything, but he'd show her just how much of the real thing he was, before the night was out.
The performer looked as if he should smell of incense, like walking into a bad tea shop on the lower East Side, though she was happy to find she couldn't actually smell him from where he was. The smoke had vanished quickly as it came, and despite how quietly she thought she'd spoken, he still managed to hear her.
Nancy fought not to scrunch up her nose as the magic man spoke to her so casually, his voice making her skin crawl.
Now, she hadn't been a Queen for very long, but she'd been a 'princess' all her life. People speaking down to her had never been taken well, and as kind as his words may have been, his tone leaned in an entirely different direction. But if he thought Cajun magic tricks could frighten her, he had another thing coming.
Sparing a short glance at her husband, she leaned forward in her seat to smirk softly across the room at Facilier.
"Go ahead. Impress me."
{Wow, this is really, really short. I'm sorry love. D: If you need more to go off of, just let me know!!}

Facilier took the Queen's words to mean that she wanted him to impress her before he did any readings for her people. After all, how could the ruler of this country endorse something like his readings if she didn't believe in them herself?
The man bowed once more, then straightened and turned to the back of the hall, gesturing the man carrying his table forth.
Another man brought two chairs, and Facilier flipped his tails up to sit down, even as his shadow pushed in the chair for him.
"If you would sit across from me, my Queen," Facilier said, indicating the chair opposite him. One of the things he could do that others could not was to use his shadow to his advantage. His shadow knew what he was thinking and when the Queen obliged to his request, his shadow would push her chair in, as well.
As he waited, his cane disappeared once more with a flick of his wrist even as his cards appeared in his hands.
He was going to have to be on top of everything today or risk losing the sanctuary he so desperately sought, not to mention any sort of compensation he wished to gain from intriguing people about his art.
Did the man's chair push itself in? No, surely a trick of the light, Nancy convinced herself as she spared a suspicious glance sideways at her husband.
Even after she'd witnessed her mother-in-law turn into dragon, she had her doubts about people who bragged of their skills. Quite simply, she was highly...superstitious.
He made her far more nervous than she chose to let her face portray.
Slowly, she stood from her seat and walked down the steps to stand opposite the showman. Reaching back for the chair, she moved to settle into the seat, mentally preparing for whatever metaphoric tricks the man had up his sleeve.

When the Queen made her way to the chair and sat down, the Shadow moved to push in her chair, as well, but Nancy got there first. With a silent huff of disappointment, it returned to its Master, behaving once more like a normal shadow. When Facilier had entered into a sort of .... purgatory, he'd been stripped of his shadow. He hadn't had any shadow until Maleficent replaced his sentient one, and he was still getting used to having it back.
Though the Queen did beautifully at masking the nervousness in her face, Facilier could practically feel how tense she was, though she didn't show it. He'd spent years learning how to read people from the slightest twitch, the slightest change in posture, expression, etc. Anyone else would have said that Queen Nancy was completely at her ease, but Facilier knew otherwise.
The Shadow Man shuffled his Tarot deck well, allowing his shadow to do so a couple of times, too. Leaning forward, he placed the deck in front of the new Queen.
"If you would cut the deck, Your Majesty," he requested, keeping his tone polite. His shadow took his hat off and placed it on the table, next to Facilier's elbow. He glanced at it, giving it a look that said "now you're just showing off," before turning back to the Queen.
Hmm, what sort of reading should he do for her? The simple three-card spread? Or perhaps something more complex? The three card spread was simple, but he could elaborate on it if need be. A more complex spread was more specific.
It was going to depend on her question, really, he thought. Or perhaps he could do several different spreads. Maybe start out with the simple and impress her that way, then move on to a more complex reading.

Nancy had been entirely focused on the intricate detailing on the backs of the tarot cards when a shadow-- the man's shadow-- moved. It moved without Facilier moving, she was certain of it, took off the man's hat. She couldn't stop staring for a moment, trying to convince herself that her eyes had been playing tricks but there was simply no way.
Holding up a hand to silence him a moment, she rubbed at her eyes before returning her attention to the deck before her, focusing once again on the designs.
"Just once?" She almost stammered, but managed to keep a calm demeanor, or so she hoped, hand falling over the cards. Lifting them, she gave a very uneven cut, practically letting the cards drop from her hand back onto the table.
Stop shaking. You know magic exists. It's simply that. Playing a trick. Breathe, Nancy.

"For now," Facilier said, watching her as she practically dropped the cards back onto the table. It seemed that she had been ... surprised, to say the least, by his shadow's little tricks. While it was true that his Shadow was something that others in his line of work didn't have, what he truly wanted to show off was his prowess and skill with the Tarot, and all the other tools of his trade.
Now, the layout he used was going to depend on her question. Which meant that she had to think of one, first. Let's see, the best way to instruct a person in an appropriate question to ask....; it could be a yes or no question, but Tarot worked much better with answering questions more broadly.
Leaning back in his chair for the moment, Facilier watched the young Queen, unreadable expression on his face. Before she asked her question, he had to consider what he knew of her. She wasn't from this Isle, originally; she was from New York, in a completely different part of Rohandor. Nor had she been here that long; she'd married her husband (on a whim, it seemed) and had come here just as quickly. Now, she was the Queen of Andalasia and feeling out of place.
Keeping all that in mind, Facilier gave the young woman a smile. "Now, Your Majesty, if you would think of a question you would like the Tarot to answer, we can begin. Yes-or-no questions can be answered, but your reading will be better and more accurate if you think of a question in an area where you might need guidance."
That was one way to put it. He just hoped that he could manage to give her the sort of reading that would lay her skepticism to rest.
A question. They always have you ask yourself a vague question so they can interpret it however you want it to be interpreted. Remember that totally crazy lady on Seventh who used to tell you that she could tell you when you'd be married through the cards? Same thing. Totally same thing.
She pondered a question while staring down at the table, at the backs of the cards in his hands. She thought of asking if the man was a fraud, or why she should trust him, but one question nagged at her mind, and seemed to move her lips without her mind's permission. In a voice that surprised even herself, strong despite the trembling she felt in her hands, she asked aloud;
"Is there anything that can be done... about Narissa?"
She met the man's dark eyes, and for a moment she felt the fear she felt flicker across her expression, glad that her back was to Edward. She knew that he was frightened of the wicked witch, and in an effort to keep him calm, she had worked on hiding all her fears. But the truth was, she was terrified of her step-mother-in-law. Magic was normal to a lot of these people, but she had grown up in a place where people didn't just turn into dragons, or poison apples.
"What can we do to protect ourselves?"

With a half-smirk, half-smile, Facilier commented, "That's two questions, Your Majesty." But they were along the same line of thinking, so he could work with them. "Concentrate on your questions, please, darlin'," he said, doing the same as he dealt out the cards. He was using the Golden Star reading for the young Queen; it seemed that it would be the best, given her questions.
He laid out six cards: the first one lay in the middle of the table, the next to his left, below the first. The third card went below the one in the middle, to Facilier's right. The fourth card was placed above the second, the fifth directly opposite. The sixth and final card he placed above the first card that had been laid down, making a circle of five cards around the middle one.
Concentrating on the matter at hand, Facilier turned the first card over, revealing The Empress, reversed.
"This card is the significator," he explained, "the heart of the matter. This Narissa person...., she's your mother-in-law?" Facilier asked, watching Nancy carefully. She hesitated, but then she nodded. At the woman's nod, he continued, "Well, she's at the root of the problems y'all are facing." He tapped the card again, "This card reversed indicates that there's some powerful, hard feelings here. She certainly doesn't think kindly of you, that's for certain, Your Highness. There's hatred and jealousy in that card."
Facilier moved to the card closest to his left hand and turned it over to reveal The Lovers. A bit of a smirk slipped onto his face as he looked up again, taking a moment to glance at the King before turning back to the Queen before him.
"As I'm sure just about everyone can tell, this card represents you and your husband," he murmured. "You're happy together; I don't need the cards to see that, but this card only represents the present."
There wasn't much more to be said about The Lovers, so he moved on to the next card, the one closest to his right hand. Turning it over, he revealed Temperance, inverted. He studied the card itself for a moment, choosing his words carefully.
"Temperance inverted means that you're overwhelmed, usually by other people's thoughts and desires," he said as he looked up. "You may be a Queen, Your Majesty, but you're still human. Don't forget that fact as you try to get used to ruling." Facilier could say more on the subject, but so far, everything he'd said had been fairly common knowledge. It was time to move on to the card that signified hidden factors.
The next card revealed The High Priestess, also inverted. Facilier tapped the card, glancing up at the King and back to Nancy, once more. "From what I've gathered, you think this Narissa is gone. According to this card, that's probably not the case. She's very much alive and you need to be wary of her." Which they already knew, or Nancy wouldn't have asked her question. "Take care who you confide in; you don't know who might be ready to betray you at a moment's notice. And that includes your spouses," he added, glancing back to the cards. Not all readings were pleasant; he hoped they realized that.
Facilier took a deep breath before leaning forward slightly, to reveal the next card: the Tower. The picture on the card revealed a lightning-struck tower, flames engulfing the structure from within. The Tower was almost never good, upright or inverted.
"This card is to show possible obstacles," he explained. "In this position, the Tower shows loss, instability of a relationship, destruction by fire. It could be literal or it could be figurative; the cards don't show which. There's much at stake and if y'all aren't careful, you might lose more than you care to."
The final card, at the top of the star, showed the outcome of the question. He hoped, for all their sakes, that it was a good card. Facilier turned the final card to reveal an inverted Wheel of Fortune.
Really, the Wheel of Fortune was one of the best cards to draw for an outcome; inverted, it meant things would go against the couple, but because of Fortune's Wheel, it was just as easy for things to take an upswing in their favor, as well.
"Things are going to go wrong for you," he said bluntly. "There's danger and a downturn of fortune in this card, but the Wheel of Fortune keeps turning; so, too, can your future."
The newly-crowned royal nearly scowled as he began, but made a concious effort to keep her face as neutral as possible as she listened to his reading, eyes watching the cards and their intricate designs closely. She thought perhaps that if she focused hard enough on the patterns, she would see some tell in them that told him ahead of time what the face would read, or that in not showing her eyes, no one would see how uncomfortable the entire situation made her.
Nancy nodded when needed, but for the most part remained absolutely silent, head down. The Empress-- he must have overheard about Narissa, there was nothing mysterious about his knowledge on such a topic. The Lovers, an attempt to gauge her reaction. Temperance, again, information he could have heard on his way into the hall...
It wasn't until the High Priestess that the woman felt even a twinge of discomfort twist inside her stomach, and raised her eyes to the reader. She knew Narissa was alive; had seen her, felt her. But the thought of any of the people in her life being ready to betray her, betray them?
She said nothing, and nodded for him to continue.
It seemed the reading would continue to spell out the bad, as he defined for her The Tower, and the Wheel of Fortune. After a moment of silent, perhaps longer than she had intended, she exhaled a breath she couldn't remember holding and stood.
"Enough..." Her tone was not strong, not a shout and barely even above a murmur as she fisted her hands into the fabric of her skirt to stop them from shaking uncharacteristically, "...You are here to entertain our guests, not the hosts..."

The voodoo practitioner watched the young woman sitting across from him as he gave his reading, alert for any tell-tale signs she might inadvertently offer. For the most part, she kept her eyes downward, trained on the cards, trying not to give anything away. But the mere fact that her posture was so stiff, the fact that she practically radiated disbelief and discomfort gave him a world of information in and of itself.
Her posture and the fact that she was trying not to give anything away showed him that his reading had hit exactly on the money; his words had affected her quite a bit. He hoped, for this couple's sake, that his reading wouldn't turn out to be accurate; it was, after all, just a reading. It didn't predict the future, just gave a reading on what was happening and what might happen eventually.
At her words, he bowed slightly, sweeping the cards back into a stack and making them disappear with a wave of his hand.
"Forgive me, Your Majesty," he said, still in his bow, "I did not mean to cause you any discomfort. And keep in mind, darlin,' that the cards don't predict the future; they just tell you about possibilities." There were many other possibilities, too, but the cards hadn't revealed those.
"Would you like me to do any readings for your guests or would you rather I go now?" he asked, glancing at his shadow to make sure that it was behaving properly. It wouldn't do for it to start acting up at a time like this.
Deep breath, another deep breath, and Nancy seemed to be very focused on keeping herself composed. Ordinarily, the woman was not against telling these sort of people where they could shove those cards; but as creepy as he was, as much as he was freaking her out, Facilier hadn't actually done anything out of line. He did exactly what he had been brought to Andalasia to do.
So, averting her eyes, the newly-crowned Queen shook her head, clearing her throat before daring to attempt to speak, "Please, I'm sure there are people who would... love to have your readings. Pardon my..."
Rudeness?Freak-out? She wasn't sure what to call it, so she simply smiled to replace the end of her sentence, hoping he would understand that an apology was sincere, but not always the easiest to formulate. "Please, continue."
Nancy returned to her seat, still trying to shake off the words of the 'doctor.' Things are going to go wrong. Try as she might to shake it off, she knew she was going to spent the rest of the event now trying to decipher its meaning. There was no way he could have known anything special; and she didn't believe in fortune tellers.
A glance to Edward, and she managed a smile. She would have time to ponder later; for now, she simply had to smile.

Facilier sank into a deep bow at the young Queen's words, and moved his table out of the center of the floor. He did quite a few readings that night; there were those who had been impressed by the cards he'd read for Queen Nancy. Of course, there were also those who were simply skeptical and wanted to catch him in some sort of trickery, but he'd dealt with those sorts of people many times before.
All in all, the party went quite smoothly. Throughout his readings, Facilier kept glancing over to the royal couple, only to see the King take his Queen's hand and squeeze it with a smile. Whatever else his reading had done, it had accurately reflected the young couple and how they felt about one another.
He just hoped that they would be amenable to granting his request; he couldn't very well go back to Louisianatown, not now, not for quite some time, possibly. And he'd told Princess Aurora that Andalasia would be his best bet; it was remote enough that he could feel safe, and yet, he would still be able to gather information for the other side, as well; Narissa, the woman these royals feared, would want someone to keep tabs on the young couple.
And Facilier would be ideally positioned to continue his double life, provided they allowed him to stay in their fair land.
As the party wound down a bit, Facilier made his way back to the royal couple, sinking into a low bow before them as he took off his hat.
"Your Majesties, thank you for your hospitality," he began, staying in his position of respect. "I must admit that I have a favor to request of your gracious Majesties," Facilier added, looking up to try to gauge their feelings on the matter. He held his breath, waiting for some indication, whether favorable or unfavorable.
The rest of the party went smoothly, no tricks or sudden upsets from any of the guests. Most of them, it seemed, just wanted to see the cards and the 'magic' that this newcomer had to show. Wanted to see the tricks and other specialities that were so often reserved for royalty.
But while her face remained calm and as neutral as the expressive queen could manage, her mind was still racing. They were just cards. These readers made the interpretations as vague as possible so that the person could fill in the blanks, and she had simply fallen for an old con. In that moment, in one little slip, she had lost her cool. And her inner worries were starting to show-- and a person like this man would prey on that.
She calmed her mind until he approached them again, and her breath held.
Nancy's gaze drifted to her husband as the pair was addressed by the good doctor, her form tense, rigid. At a gentle hand on her arm, she allowed herself a smile. With Edward's nod, she had to trust her voice to be strong enough to speak, "And what, may I ask, would that be...?"
