A wizened old woman picked her way through the trees, a dark cloak covering her hunched shoulders. At a glance, it would appear that she was merely an elderly traveller. And that was exactly how Narissa wanted it. There was a reason she favoured this disguise--people rarely suspected a frail old crone of any wrongdoings.
She would've smirked at her own brilliance, but her frustration won out. The dratted plant was nowhere to be seen! The disguised sorceress lamented this land's lack of reliable apothecaries as she stepped over yet another tree root. Her years of research on plants and potions had not prepared her for this, for rooting around in the dirt for just the right herb or flower. Narissa had had lackeys for that sort of thing when she was Queen, and before then she'd simply commandeered servants from her parents to retrieve her potions ingredients.
But perhaps she could get herself a willing assistant. Surely it wouldn't be hard to coerce one of the locals into helping a poor old lady find a certain herb to heal her aching back. The difficulty lay in finding someone else who happened to be wandering the forest in the first place. Grumbling under her breath, the ex-monarch continued on, keeping a sharp eye out for any human movement.

(OOC: Aaaaah, my first time making a starter on a forum! Hopefully this is okay...)
Pocahontas stood on the bank of a wide river looking severely at the subject of her statement. The raccoon had a bottomless pit for a stomach and a complete lack of manners to go with his insatiable appetite. The two were a very volatile combination, and landed Meeko in more trouble than his human and hummingbird friends cared for. Like just now, when Meeko had snatched a passing fish from the cool waters to feast upon. The real problem in all of this was that Meeko had wrested that fish from the mouth of a passing otter, who had caught it but moments before on actual merit.
Now Pocahontas stood, scorning a half-smug (at his prize), half-grumpy (at being caught red-handed) raccoon on the river's shore. Beside her head, Flit buzzed madly. His feathered chest was puffed out fit to bursting, and his eyes, which were normally beady to begin with, were narrowed nearly closed. Even more, the otter that was being so greatly wronged in this entire scenario was directly behind Pocahontas. He clung to her leg, but was leaning far out around her, gesturing animatedly with one paw toward Meeko, chittering and chattering his displeasure at this injustice.
Meeko must have been either very hungry, or especially stubborn in that moment, because he looked to be sincerely considering whether or not to obey the demands that Pocahontas was giving. "I told you to give it back," the Powhatan reminded the raccoon as he eyed first longingly the fish, then the otter in displeasure. Pocahonats inhaled through her nose to marshal patience where it was dwindling. Usually Meeko was endearing in his mischief to the Powhatan. Today he was being very selfish and unreasonable. "Meeko." The raccoon grudgingly met her eye. Pocahontas gave him an earnest, pleading look. "Please?"
With a laborious, greatly overly dramatic sigh, Meeko held out the fish away from himself, looking in another direction. The otter didn't waste time. He scampered forward, reclaimed his fair prize and slipped into the water before the rude thief could change its mind. The otter gave a nod to Pocahontas, then disappeared beneath the current. Meeko scowled at Pocahontas, as if it were all her fault. "Oh, honestly. Catch your own fish and I'll let you have it." Meeko's expression changed, and Pocahontas read his intent. "No," she insisted sternly, "you didn't catch that fish. You stole it."

Narissa winced as she stumbled over yet another tree root. Belatedly, she realized that while her current disguise was excellent for avoiding suspicion, it was awful at traversing through forests. Yes, she would definitely need to find someone to help her. Preferably before she broke a bone tripping over a rock or some other irritating and unnecessary thing in her way.
The sorceress stiffened at the sound of a woman's voice ahead. Keeping her eyes downcast to watch the ground lest she trip and fall, Narissa hobbled onward, seeking the source of the noise. Her steps were quicker now that she knew there was someone nearby, but she couldn't move too quickly--she had to keep up the facade of being a frail old woman just in case whoever it was she heard up ahead was watching. Hopefully it would be a local woman, one who knew the area and who could help her find the plant she was seeking, and not a fellow traveler who would likely be completely clueless.
She glanced up after a few more steps to see movement up ahead. The voice was stronger now, and Narissa could faintly hear running water. The woman sounded as though she was holding a very one-sided conversation, but Narissa could only make out the figure of one person through the trees, neither of which were good signs. Just her luck that the first person she'd found was one of the crazy ones. Still, it could be difficult to find anyone else in the forest, so perhaps she could give the woman the benefit of the doubt.
"Hello?" She called in a wavering voice, still shuffling along the forest floor towards the woman. "Hello, is someone out there?"
Meeko was doing the raccoon equivalent of muttering under his breath when the voice called out from the surrounding forest. Pocahontas' head snapped to look over her shoulder, sending a curtain of silky raven hair flying in a momentary halo around her shoulders before spilling down her back anew. All three of them - Powhatan, raccoon and hummingbird - were possessed with the same, wide-eyed and curious expression. Then they moved together. Pocahontas launched skyward and grasped an overhanging branch with one hand. The other she reached down so that Meeko could grasp it with one five-fingered paw. Flit bobbed up into the branches, looking down toward where the voice came while Pocahontas hefted the portly thief up ahead of her, then hoisted herself into the boughs in turn.
They were all reacting on instinct, really. Even after all of Pocahontas' travels throughout Rohandor as an ambassador for not only the Powhatan, but for Jamesville, she still regressed to natural tendencies in certain circumstances. Pocahontas knew all of the people from the settlement, and every member of her tribe. She did not recognize the voice that called out, and even though she knew that it was likely some foreigner lost in the woods of her homeland, Pocahontas was cautious. There was no harm in taking cover before she was truly discovered. In that way she could spy out the approaching stranger and decide whether or not it would be wise to truly introduce herself.
Pocahontas had been especially careful since new of the Forever Stone's failure reached Jamesville. All of the villains and evil personas who had been bound to the Stone to preserve the peace and prosperity of Rohandor had now been set loose on the realm, all at once. Pocahontas did not fear Governor Radcliffe. His power had been in his station, and the manipulative way that he used that, and the promise of riches over others. Since his true colors had been shown at John Smith's execution those years ago, he would hold no immediate power or influence within Jamesville. Pocahontas was learned enough of the tales of Rohandor to understand just what kind of evil had been locked within the Forever Stone, though. She couldn't be too reserved.
Down below on the forest floor Pocahontas could see an elderly woman shuffling along, looking somewhere between irritated and hopeful. The Powhatan narrowed her gaze in consideration, then turned to look at Flit and Meeko, who stood on and hovered above the branch beside her. Flit simply appeared interested, but not on the defensive. Meeko's mouth was agape, and he shrugged to Pocahontas when she glanced at him. The ambassador's lips twisted in a dry scowl at the lack of help that her animal companions were giving. She took a deep breath, and then decided what she would do.
Just before the elderly woman appeared on the riverbank Pocahontas dropped down again and bobbed into a standing position so it was like she'd never left the ground. She stared evenly at the stranger as they manifested from the underbrush. "Hello," she said. "I am Pocahontas."
Narissa cursed inwardly when she saw the silhouette disappear from view. She'd scared whoever it was off, and lost her only chance at finding an aide in this godforsaken forest. Unless they hadn't heard her...
With renewed determination, the sorceress trudged onward. Still, there was no sign of the woman she had just seen. Narissa was beginning to contemplate simply giving up and shapeshifting into something with better eyesight and mobility when the woman appeared in front of her.
The disguised ex-queen jumped slightly, but quickly recovered. Judging by her appearance, 'Pocahontas' was definitely a local, and would be able to locate the exact plant Narissa was looking for. "Hello, Pocahontas." She smiled up at the woman, making her voice as sickly sweet as she could. "I'm so glad to meet you! My name is Belinda, and I'm afraid I've gotten myself very lost in this forest. There's something I'm looking for here, a special plant, but my eyes aren't what they used to be... Could you help me, dear?"
The wizened elder who hobbled into view was perhaps the definition of vulnerable. She appeared frail and kindly and Pocahontas did not think anyone or thing could conceive harming such a helpless old woman, be they man or beast. The voice that spoke Pocahontas tilted her head slightly at, for she felt that it was at slight odds with the rest of the woman's appearance. She recalled briefly the way that Kekata sometimes modified his voice to more match a character in his wondrous tales around the fireside. But this woman was age-old, and had been wobbling through the forest at a decent pace for who knew how long. It very well could be that she was simply trying to force her normal measure of kindliness through an otherwise exasperated air. Pocahontas disregarded this oddity for now.
The Powhatan continued to measure the woman with eyes much deeper than her age should have allowed. She blinked slowly and continued to stand proud and passive, neither retreating nor shrinking the gap between her and the old woman. There was something strange about the foreigner, but Pocahontas could not quite place it. Misgiving was in her heart, an instinct that something was the matter, but there was no evidence other than that reflexive hunch to support it. Altogether Pocahontas was perplexed about this woman, who accepted her name freely but failed to extend her own in kind. The ambassador knew that rituals for greeting one another differed from one Isle to the next (indeed, one kingdom to the next) within Rohandor, but it had been fairly commonplace throughout her exploits that, when one person offered their name, the other responded in kind. Maybe the old woman was too forgetful, or winded, or anxious to remember niceties, though.
Pocahontas had to belatedly reflect on what the elder said after she had finished saying it, being too preoccupied with her maelstrom of thoughts to consider them as they were spoken. Looking for a plant. That was what the woman said was her reason for being there, in Jamesville. Pocahontas had known outright that this foreigner was just that: not a native of the region. What she had to say only reaffirmed the fact. The Powhatan's grave eyes narrowed in deliberation. The amber irises flickered as with a rose-hued beam of impending dawn. Pocahontas had long ago learned what to do in the case that her own wisdom failed, and her own power came up short: listen. The ambassador closed her eyes, and the world around her faded into twilight and then oblivion. A universe much more beautiful took its place. One of sweet voices and warm winds scented with the fresh bursting growth of a dewy spring.
Que que na-to-ra... You will understand...
The Spirits whispered to Pocahontas. She listened intently. Outwardly a ribbon of leaves borne by a breeze danced down from the overhanging bows above the little river. They passed along Pocahontas' shoulders, plucking her silky raven hair and making it ripple while her expression tweaked with new thought. The Spirits urged caution but did not intone warning or outcry of blatant danger. Pocahontas opened her eyes again, hardly five seconds after she had closed them. She looked over the woman again, more inquisitively this time, and slightly less guarded. "Why," she said, "do you need this plant?" Pocahontas would want an answer before she decided whether or not to agree to assist this woman in the finding of it. Though, she couldn't really think of a reason that would make her refuse off the top of her head.
There was an air of something like apprehension about Pocahontas, Narissa thought, and she worried for a brief moment that she had said the wrong thing. After all, first impressions were everything, and if Narissa was giving this woman the impression that she was not to be trusted--which was, admittedly, true, but that was beside the point--then any chance of receiving her assistance would soon go up in smoke. And Narissa didn't exactly have any other options around at the moment. Oh, she was starting to hate forests.
The younger woman still hadn't said anything. The silence was starting to make Narissa uncomfortable. She was being judged, wasn't she? She could feel it. After all this time taking measure of the people around her, she had forgotten how it felt to be on the other end of things, to be pinned by that scrutinizing look. She would've returned it with one of her own, but that she knew that would do absolutely nothing to help her case. She hated leaving anything important in someone else's hands, but there would be no going back now. Narissa had come too far for that.
Alarm bells began to sound in her head when Pocahontas spoke. Sure, she didn't seem quite as wary as before, but the question still raised an issue. Narissa hadn't expected her to ask what it was for--minions were meant to do as they were told and refrain from asking stupid questions. Well, it was easy enough to think up a believable lie, wasn't it? "I get these terrible aches and pains, you see, but if I mix this plant up with just the right ingredients, I'll be right as rain! That's what I've been told, anyway." She smiled, hoping to find the right balance between innocence and intelligence in her expression.
Of course, hemlock wasn't really considered a medicinal plant by most people, but the well-educated knew that it had many different uses, including pain relief. And it was a kind of pain relief Narissa was after, in a terribly twisted way. Lies were always more convincing when there was a grain of truth to them. At least, she had found that to be the case many times before. Hopefully it would prove itself once more today.
