"Come with me, my dear," the woman called Narissa, Edward's stepmother and former Queen of Andalasia called to Nancy.
Nancy, entranced by the spell that Narissa had put on her, followed the woman's beckoning and coaxing. Narissa slipped an arm around the young woman and offered her some sort of liquid, a potion, no doubt, which she drank.
The King watched helplessly, paralyzed by magic, as his wife turned back to face him, a look of loathing in her eyes.
"What made you think I could ever love you? You're weak. You don't deserve to be King. I only married you to get out of New York."
Before he could do or say anything, Nancy slapped him hard across the face. "Don't ever touch me again," she spat at him, turning back to follow Narissa out of the room, leaving Edward paralyzed, the tears starting in his eyes.
Edward sat bolt upright in the King-size bed in his bedchamber in Andalasia, breaths coming in short, shallow gasps. He'd had the nightmare again. Narissa had returned, taking his beloved Nancy away from him. And there was nothing he could do. Narissa had cast a spell on him, paralyzing him.
"No!" he yelled, wrenching free of the nightmare again. But Nancy was still asleep. He shouldn't wake her with this, not again.
It had been bad enough, the first few times, when he'd actually woken her. Edward didn't tend to try talking things through, but Nancy had managed to coax the nightmare out of him.
The first time, she had actually managed to calm him down: she reminded him that Narissa was trapped and that there was no need to worry, she wasn't going to leave him. And if Narissa ever got out, Nancy could deal with her mother-in-law.
But when the dream had started recurring more frequently, Edward had to wonder if there was someone sending these nightmares. Was it an omen? Could Narissa escape? Or were these empty fears, merely born of the idea that he might not be enough, as a bitter, rival young nobleman had suggested, for his dearest Nancy?
No, no, he wouldn't think about that right now. She had married him; clearly, he was the one she wanted, the one she had chosen.
Back in New York, Nancy had been a deep sleeper; she'd slept through earthquakes, thunderstorms, and the occasional alarm clock. But since she'd come to live in Andalasia, she couldn't sleep as deeply as she once had because her husband panicked. He always felt so guilty when he would wake her, in a cold sweat in the dead of night, panting and shouting. But she'd rather be awake, because she needed to be able to soothe him.
Some nights, when he wouldn't shout but simply just jumped awake, she would feign sleep in the hopes of him relaxing on his own. But tonight, when he shouted, it was impossible to pretend to sleep through that. She was pretty sure that no one was asleep after that.
Rolling over slowly, Nancy reached up and rested her hand on his shoulder, careful not to scare him, before pushing to sit up, rubbing at her eyes with her other hand.
"Hey..." She murmured softly, leaning her head against his shoulder, "Another nightmare? Or was there a spider in the bed again?"
She knew the answer, but he needed to come to her on his own.

He was still shaking when he felt Nancy roll over to face him, which meant he was prepared for the hand on his shoulder. Other times, she'd started him so much that he'd leapt out of bed, determined to locate his sword before he realized that it had only been Nancy. Edward always felt guilty for waking her, but he felt more guilty for going for his sword. He was still getting used to sleeping beside someone.
As Nancy pushed herself into a sitting position, Edward did the same, nightmare still vivid in his mind. He knew that that's all it was, just a nightmare, but he never felt as helpless as he did when he'd just woken up from such a horrible dream.
Edward hated feeling helpless. He'd been helpless when both of his parents had died, and it was something he tried very hard to avoid. But right now, in the middle of the night, having just had a nightmare......, he was at his most vulnerable.
A small smile slipped onto the King's face as Nancy leaned her head on his shoulder, but it vanished almost as soon as it had come.
"Yes, it was another nightmare," he said softly. "It was ... different, this time. Worse," he admitted. It was hard for him to talk about these sorts of things; he had to be strong, after all. He was a King; he had to remain strong and rule his country well, which he couldn't do if he screamed like a child at every nightmare.
But it wasn't every nightmare, just the ones that frightened him so. He wasn't afraid of very much, but he was absolutely terrified that these nightmares were more than simply dreams, that they meant something that he hadn't quite figured out yet.
"Talk to me, Edward," She murmured, trying to coax the dream out of him. She needed to show him that these torments in his head were just that; in his head.
When she was little, Nancy could remember running into her father's bedroom with tears streaming down her cheeks after a nightmare. He would always sit up with her and make her tell him every detail she could remember, and in the end, she usually ended up feeling silly for being so frightened by something like a black knight chasing her around the apartment building.
Edward's dreams weren't like that. Edward dreamed terrifying things, hurtful things that they were both fearful would come to pass. But she needed him to see that at this moment, just now, he was safe. She was here, and he was safe, and no monsters were coming for them.
Edward leaned back in their bed, pulling his knees up to his chest to lean on them. He knew that his fears were unfounded, foolish, even, but he'd never had to really fight for much in his life. Of course his happiness would be taken away; he hadn't done anything to earn it. Yes, he was a King, yes, he was rather dashing, but he was not deserving of his Nancy. Not truly, not the way he thought he should be.
Putting his head on his knees, Edward took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "Narissa ... she appeared to us...., but instead of simply killing both of us, she paralyzed me with magic and gave you a potion." He took another deep breath, then continued, much as he was embarrassed by his own subconscious, "You....drank it. And then you told me that I didn't deserve to be King, that you'd only married me to get out of your New York City."
Edward hated that his nightmares were almost always like this, but it was his biggest fear. He loved Nancy so much and he was so afraid of losing her. After all, she hadn't grown up in Andalasia; she wasn't bound to the land the way that he was. If she wanted to, she could leave forever.
As much as he didn't want to tell her the rest, Edward knew that Nancy would want him to tell her all of it. "And then you slapped me, told me never to touch you again, and left." He swallowed hard, letting out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. Why were his nightmares suddenly so vivid? They'd never been like that before the Forever Stone had been breached; there had to be something to them.
For a moment, the bride almost wanted to laugh. The dream was... not ridiculous, in such a term, but it certainly didn't seem ridiculous. How had Narissa managed to force-feed her a potion? Or did Edward believe she would ever take it willingly?
The mind was never a thing to be mocked, so she kept a straight face, nodding softly as he spoke.
"Edward..." She was carefully tiptoeing through her words, clearing the sleep from her voice as she spoke, "Narissa is not coming for us. And if she ever made me speak those words, they would be lies. Big, fat lies. I left New York to marry you, not the other way around. And I never..."
She paused a moment there, reaching a hand up to stroke some of his hair out of his face, brushing away the beads of sweat that still stuck to his forehead, "...never want you to stop being near me. Okay?"
Edward knew that she was trying to reassure him, that her words were meant to be comforting. And usually, they were. But Narissa was a powerful witch, and she was clever; she wanted her kingdom back and she would stop at nothing to regain it. She might have fooled Edward into thinking she cared for him at all, over the years, but that much he'd learned about his stepmother.
He couldn't help but shake his head at Nancy's words. "Narissa sees us as having stolen what was rightfully hers," he said, sitting up straighter, "She will try to regain the throne. It's only a matter of when. And if we'll be prepared for her."
The problem was, he didn't know how to safeguard against magic like hers. Narissa was a shapeshifter, and that meant that, really, they should be wary of everyone. Edward wasn't usually this pessimistic, but it was hard to retain his usual outlook on life after recurring nightmares such as the one that had woken him yet again.
The young King turned to look at his wife, reaching out for her hands. "What are we going to do, my love?" he asked, the worry in his eyes clear, as well as the shadows beneath them. He was doing his best to be the King that his people needed, but he hadn't been raised to truly be a ruler; he'd been raised to entertain himself, to stay out of Narissa's way. Was he truly ready to lead this kingdom? Or should he step aside, let someone else rule in his stead? Granted, he had to do a better job than Narissa; that much was a given, but was he truly the right person to lead Andalasia?
Nancy took Edward's outreached hands and held them tightly in her own, trying desperately to think of reassurances, of things that would calm him down, that would make Narissa seem like an obstacle that would be easy for them to overcome together. She didn't have the words; Narissa was terrifying, powerful. More powerful than either of them, that much wasn't even a question.
"We find allies," She finally answered with a nod, smiling up at him warmly before releasing his hands in exchange for cradling his face between her fingers, "Allies and friends who know about magic, and now how to stop people like Narissa and help teach us how to better protect Andalasia. But over everything else, what we need to do? We need to not let her stop us from living."
She paused a moment, expecting Edward to take her statement a touch to literally, so she continued, "We can't just stop everything and wait in fear of her. We need to prepare, of course. But you also need to not let her control your life! You're a wonderful king-- everyone knows that much. You're even a better king than your father, according to some. You need to continue to be strong. For them. For me. And I'll be strong for you, and together we'll figure this out."

The young King leaned into his wife's hands, listening to her words, her plans before nodding. They could do this. They would do this. They would be strong rulers for their people and for each other. Taking a deep breath, he nodded again, a small smile slipping onto his face.
"You're right," he murmured, turning to kiss her hand. "Of course, you're right." But now, what it meant was that they were going to have to find allies. Which meant venturing forth from their own little island. They couldn't just sit there, twiddling their thumbs, expecting allies to come to them.
Sitting up straighter, more confident, now that they had some semblance of a plan, Edward took Nancy's hands in his own once more, his usual air of bravado and knowledge returned. "Nancy, my love, we can journey to the other Isles! We can visit the royalty of the lands and extend our hand in friendship, all the while gathering friends and allies that will be able to help us if my stepmother comes back to this land!" Which she undoubtedly would.
He laughed brightly and leaned over to kiss his wife. "My dearest beloved, you are a genius! What would I ever do without you?" he murmured, meaning it. Oh, yes, he'd survive without her, but life would be much more dull, that was certain. And the people simply adored her; they wouldn't have loved someone else nearly as much.
Edward sprang out of bed, over to the table by the window. It was still dark, but he wanted to make a note to start planning for their trip in the morning.
Edward's belief was like a force of nature. One minute calm and diminished, and the next it was a brewing storm of excitement. One he was stirred up, riled up, there was no backing down. And it seemed she had sparked his confidence, as he now was practically jumping to find these allies they required for their land.
In all of his excitement, she only managed to laugh and nod, watching as he threw himself out of bed, hurrying to make notes at their desk.
"Well, you know what they say," She began to trail off, before realizing that no, Edward probably had no idea what she was referencing. Quickly, she finished her thought with a grin, pulling herself out of bed to wrap her arms around him at the window, "Behind every great man, there's a woman... Which is really dumb, actually, so you can ignore that. But, ah..."
She shook her head with a laugh, releasing him in order to sit on the desk, glancing down to the notes he was making, "We make a good team. A good pair. And I know that whatever your stepmom can throw at us, we can take it."
Nancy set her hand over Edward's, stilling his writing for a moment to look in his eyes. She was sarcastic so often that she wanted to meet his eyes, wanted him to know just how serious she was taking this. How seriously she cared about him, and this place, "We'll get help. We'll stop her in whatever she's planning."
