Alice gazed out the window of the carriage as it rolled through town. Of all the things that she and her sister did together, going to the theatre was not one that she normally liked that much. The plays that were most appropriate for children, that Mathilda tended to bring her to, were mostly very boring and preachy. While she was assured that this time it would be different, Alice didn't really believe it, and so spent her ride thinking about other things. Listening to the beat of the horses' hooves against the road, she started trying to think of poems that could fit the rhythm. It was a daunting task, to say the least, and she was almost about to call out for them to slow down so she could have more time to think, when the carriage arrived at its destination.
It wasn't long before Alice spotted the poster beside the theatre's entrance. A smile grew across her face as she read the title- A Midsummer Night's Dream. Now, that sounded more interesting, she thought. It certainly didn't sound like the sort of thing that would try to force a moral on her. Unless there was an interlude about oysters, that is. It was a play she'd heard of, of course- everyone had heard of Shakespeare! But, she'd never actually seen it, so it would be interesting to see what it was like. With some unexpected enthusiasm, Alice took her sister's hand and rushed to the line to get her tickets to the show. Once she reached it, she looked around to see what sorts of people were going to see this play.

London had always been a city that held a special place in Macbeth's heart. The Londontown of Rohandor was a bit different than the London in which he'd first seen his friend Shakespeare's take on the story of Macbeth's own life, but it still held much of the same memories for the former High King of Scotland.
A Midsummer Night's Dream had been written by his friend quite a few years before Macbeth; in fact, that had been how the two men had first met. The former High King had originated the role of Theseus, after all, and he and the playwright had become friends over the course of the show's run at The Globe.
It was quite a different atmosphere today, though, and it had been some time since Macbeth had taken the leisure time to go to see a play, and even longer since he'd been involved in the theatre. If things continued to stay calm (which he very much doubted), he was going to have to look into performing again. Especially whenever a theatre was planning on doing Macbeth; who knew the struggles of the fictional king better than the man on which he'd been based?
Macbeth was quite glad that Midsummer was the play being performed, however; it took a great deal of willpower not to laugh at theatrically inappropriate times during Macbeth.
When he got to the theatre, there was already a line starting at the box office. He'd come here so often in the past that the staff knew him. Macbeth waited in the line with everyone else, though; he didn't want special treatment in this case.
There was a young girl in front of him, waiting with a young woman. The former High King of Scotland smiled at the girl, glad to see that some of the youth of today were still enjoying his friend's plays.
"Is this your first time seeing Midsummer, my dear?" he asked with a friendly smile.
Alice looked up at the sound of the voice. The man who had spoken looked pleasant enough, and rather distinguished as well. It was somewhat surprising that he'd addressed her at all. Children were, after all, often beneath adults' notice. "Yes, sir," she said in reply, giving him a kind smile with a bit of a curtsy as well. "It looks very interesting indeed," she noted, looking toward the poster. It certainly seemed to have a variety of curious characters. "It makes me think of some dreams I've had. I've certainly had some memorable ones in the past," she commented, giving a knowing smile to her sister, who laughed a bit. Of course they both knew what dream she was referring to, and it then occurred to Alice that this might have been why her sister had chosen that play in the first place.
"What about you?" she asked the man, putting her hands behind her back and looking curiously at him. From the way he talked about it, it certainly sounded like he had seen the play before. Shortening the title like that, it was almost like he was giving it a nickname.

Macbeth observed the girl with interest as she bobbed a curtsy, in addition to answering his question. Hmm, the child was obviously well-mannered, perhaps a bit precocious , from the way she spoke. It wasn't everyone who was willing to talk about their fantastical dreams to a complete stranger; many thought such dreams were a sign of madness, when really, it was more likely a sign of an active imagination.
He smiled at her mention of memorable dreams; there had been several Macbeth had had over the years that recurred that he would always remember. They were more like memories, though, as opposed to a story all their own.
The girl's question made Macbeth pause to think. Just how many times HAD he seen this particular play? And not only that, how many times had he been IN the play? Thinking back throughout the years, if he managed to remember every time he'd been involved with this show, it would surely be a mind-boggling number.
"Oh, yes," he said instead, a smile on his bearded face. "A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of my favorite plays. I've been involved with it often enough that it's almost like an old friend." Of course, it was more along the lines of the playwright being an old friend, but he couldn't exactly admit that to the young girl to whom he was talking.
"Ah, but where are my manners?" he questioned himself with a shake of his head. "I am Lennox Macduff," Macbeth said, offering the young girl a low bow. "At your service, my lady."
"Oh, so you work in the theatre?" Alice asked. "That's very interesting. I've always wondered what it would be like." She'd often thought that the life of an actress would be an exciting one- though perhaps, she might do better as a writer of plays rather than a performer in them. She had thought that her adventure in Wonderland might make a good book, but she now considered what it might be like as a stage production. Could any actor really measure up to her own mental image of those she'd met there? It was something she'd have to think about.
In any case, the man proceeded to introduce himself, in a gentlemanly manner at that. "I'm Alice... Alice Liddell. And this is my sister Mathilda." While the introductions were going around, she thought she might as well introduce her sister to the man as well. Sure, Mathilda was older, and might be expected to introduce herself, but Alice was the one the man was addressing. "It's a pleasure, Mr. Macduff." She didn't notice the similarity in his name to a different play, but Mathilda seemed to be amused by it.
"What exactly do you do in the theatre then?" Alice asked, returning to the previous subject. "Are you an actor? Or do you do more of the backstage things?" She couldn't really get more specific in her question than that, not knowing much about how plays are actually put on, but she thought that would get the point across. She smiled as she asked him questions, looking eager for the answers.

The former High King paused to consider the young girl's question. He could answer in the affirmative that, yes, he did work in the theatre, but that was off and on, at best. In truth, he could best be classified as a scholar, with an emphasis on medieval Scottish history.
"I do sometimes," he said in response to the girl's question. "It's been a while since I've been in any productions, though," he added, trying to remember the last time he'd been involved in a show. Generally, Macbeth was the sort that preferred to work in front of an audience, in an acting capacity, but he'd done his fair share of backstage work, too. There had been quite a few times he'd acted as dramaturge for productions of Macbeth; he hadn't had to do any research, since he already knew exactly what had happened.
He smiled at the young girl's introduction of herself and her sister and bowed once more. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Liddell, Miss Liddell." Macbeth was always the sort to mind his manners, especially when meeting new people. One was never sure what sort of people one would run into; there could be royalty or even deities in disguise, after all.
"Mostly I act," he said in response to Alice's question. "Though there are certain shows where I've worked on the behind-the-scenes research, to help the actors know how to set the scenes."
Only sometimes? An interesting answer, Alice thought. But she supposed not everyone could make a living just from acting, despite how some people had gotten famous from doing so- and it was probably even tougher for those who didn't act. Perhaps the man had some other job and theatre work was just his hobby.
Alice smiled back as her sister and the man acknowledged each other. He seemed like a respectable sort of man, the kind of person her sister wouldn't mind her talking to- and obviously didn't, since... she was talking to him already.
"Oh, so you do both! That's very nice. If you do research for plays, you must be very knowledgeable." After all, a theatre would have to put on a number of different types of performances in many varying settings. He must have learned a lot after doing all that. Alice couldn't imagine doing that particular job herself, though. Some plays might be exciting, but just reading about their backgrounds wouldn't necessarily be so much fun. Her sister might be fine with it though...
"Well, then do you know many actors? You must meet many interesting people in your line of work," she asked. It wasn't often she got the chance to meet someone with such connections!

Macbeth couldn't help but smile at the girl's questions. It seemed she was quite interested in the theatre, but whether that was because she simply wished to know more about the art form or because she was intending to attempt pursuing a career in showbusiness. It was rather difficult to successfully manage the latter, so hopefully, she was just a curious young girl.
She said he must be very knowledgeable and he laughed at that. Yes, one could say he was quite knowledgeable, having amassed quite a bit of experience and learning over the years of his long life. Which was one of the reasons he was the perfect dramaturge, when he chose to offer himself to any companies. In fact, there had been a period of time where that had been what he'd done for a living. He was quite good at it, which meant that he had been hired by a high-end company that could pay well. Not that that mattered, of course; he had quite the fortune stashed away, in various safe locations.
"I'm a scholar," he told the girl, confirming that, yes, he was quite knowledgeable. "Though I love the theatre, learning is my true passion." Not all young people would understand that, and he wasn't sure if this girl would or not, but it was worth mentioning. He'd tutored a number of people, both famous and not over the years. His had been quite an interesting life, if filled with both tragedy and drama.
When Alice asked if he knew many actors, Macbeth shook his head with a smile. He'd known more when he'd practically been living for the theatre, but that had been years ago. All of his famous actor friends were dead now, or if they weren't, he couldn't exactly come calling, since he looked exactly the same as he did when he'd first known them.
"I used to, but I'm more familiar with people that have been dead for hundreds of years," he explained with a smile. Shakespeare had been a friend, after all, and so had Marlowe.
It was strange that the man had laughed when she'd said he was knowledgeable. To her, it just seemed to be the truth. "What's so funny?" she asked, guessing that she might have reminded him of something funny that she wasn't aware of. Maybe it was something personal; but if it was, he didn't have to tell her. She was just curious after all.
Whatever the case was, the conversation soon turned elsewhere, as the man mentioned his interest in learning. "You'd get along well with my sister then," she said with a smile and glance towards her sister. "She's just as interested in learning... especially history." Which is what it sounded like his specialty was. That would be what he meant by being more familiar with people who were long-dead, wouldn't it? ...well, there were other possibilities Alice could imagine, but they didn't seem very likely.
There might have been more to ask, but the line was heading inside the theater. "I suppose it's time to go inside," she said. "We wouldn't want to arrive too late," she added, briefly considering adding "for a very important date!" but thinking better of it for now. "But it has been nice talking to you. Maybe we'll be able to talk again, at the next play," she added. She didn't know when exactly that would be, however.

It appeared that the young Miss Liddell hadn't appreciated his laughter at the fact that she'd called him knowledgeable. He supposed that that made sense; she might have thought that he was laughing at her, not at his own amusement. But he didn't have a chance to explain before the young girl was telling him that he would get along with her sister, who was interested in learning, as well.
The former High King of Scotland nodded to the older young woman, offering her a polite smile as he listened to the younger of the two as she continued to say that her sister was interested in history. If that was the case, then perhaps he would get along with the older of the two Miss Liddells, but that was beside the point. He had come here to enjoy the theatre, not to discuss his life, even though he'd been doing just that with the young girl called Alice.
She was a curious little creature, and that curiosity was quite refreshing; so often, Macbeth found, young people were not terribly interested in the world around them. Mostly, they were interested in themselves. And perhaps she simply hadn't reached that age, but either way, her simple wonder at the world around her was unusual, and something that he appreciated.
Alice mentioned that it was time to go inside, and Macbeth looked around, noticing that, indeed, it did appear as though they'd opened the house to start filling the seats.
"In that case, I shall bid you farewell, Miss Liddell," Macbeth said, offering her a smile and another bow. "Perhaps we shall meet again. But until then, I hope you enjoy the show." And that she kept her imagination, but that was a bit more difficult to put into words without sounding ... odd. He hadn't expected any sort of meeting like that, but it was quite welcome and unexpected. And who knew? Perhaps they would meet again, someday.
