She was a queen, and she really should have been acting like one. But to be completely honest, Nancy was very, very, very excited to be in England. Or, rather, what had become England in Rohandor.
Of course, she had come to Londontown to meet a mouse queen and she wasn't entirely certain how she was going to handle that one, but this was one of the first stops Edward had insisted upon on their journey across Rohandor to meet the many royals.
So, while her darling husband was off organizing things with Queen Mousetoria's court, the newly crowned royal had taken to exploring the city she had always dreamt of seeing. Of course, a part of Nancy had thought she would be seeing the City of Dreams with Robert, once upon a time-- She had always talked to him about making a trip, but the man had kept his feet planted firmly in New York and his head out of her dreamy clouds.
Speaking of keeping ones head out of dreamy clouds, while Nancy had been thinking about the life she had long since left behind in New York City, she hadn't been paying all that much attention to where she was going-- and this resulted in her walking directly into a young woman, who appeared to have her head as much on different planes as herself.
"Oh, geez, I'm so, so sorry, I wasn't paying any attention..." Nancy babbled awkwardly, trying to help the girl back to her feet.
{Hey Alice, dearie! I remembered you mentioning Alice and Nancy possibly meeting up in Londontown, so I rolled with it. Hope this is okay for you! }
As it happened, Alice was carrying a basket full of books through the streets- most were for her sister, but she'd picked out one for herself with a nice picture on the cover. She was looking forward to reading it, and was imagining what it might be like based solely on the cover, when she found herself tripping into someone else. Books scattered over the ground as she fell, and a blush came over her face.
"Oh dear! No, no, I'm the one who should be sorry," Alice said in embarrassment as she started quickly gathering up the books, though she did accept the woman's help in standing before continuing to look to be sure she had them all. She then looked toward Nancy again, pondering something. "If you don't mind my asking, where are you from?" she asked. "You don't sound English. And your clothes are... well, they're very pretty," she added, not quite sure herself what she meant by this. The woman definitely looked different somehow, but she didn't know what exactly it meant. Maybe she was going to a costume party- or maybe she was a foreign queen here for a visit, who she just happened to run into. There could be any number of reasons, and she didn't want to jump to any conclusions just yet.

Nancy was hurriedly helping to pick up the dropped books, glancing at the variety in titles. Raising her eyes back to the girl as she passed them over, the Queen could help but quirk a smile at the soft-spoken, but still rather bold question. It was honestly refreshing.
"I'm actually-- well, originally, I'm from New York-- over in Ameri-- Well, uh..." Nancy paused a moment, trying to figure out if she should say America versus The Isle of Stone. After all this time, and she was still confused about the whole thing. "But I'm visiting from Andalasia."
She wasn't sure how to take the comment about her clothing; she really had wished to dress down for this visit, but Edward got such a light in his eyes when he got to see her wear gowns, so they had made a compromise of a gown, but thankfully foregoing the hoop skirt.
At last, the basket was filled once more; but her interest had been piqued by this stranger and her words. "New York I've heard of, of course," she said, "but where is Andalasia? And what is it like?" She had too many questions for the visitor. Before she could ask them though, she realized she should probably introduce herself. So, she stepped back and curtsied to the woman. "My name's Alice, by the way. I am sorry if I'm keeping you too long. It's just that... well, I'm quite curious about where you've come from!"

"Hey, no, don't apologize for that. Trust me, I've got nothing better to do today; my husband is setting up a meeting with a mouse, which is surprisingly more difficult than we'd expected." The thoughts came out without any thought, and after a moment, Nancy grinned at the little girl again. "Andalasia is a smaller kingdom on the Isle of the Crown. It's... almost always sunny and warm, and I swear, it looks like... it looks like something out of a fairy tale. It's a bit crazy, but pretty cool, if I do say so myself. There's... faeries and talking animals and, y'know... trolls."
Nancy wasn't used to explaining fairy tales to people who lived in a seemingly normal place; usually, it was explaining modern day things to fairy tale characters. It was kind of strange to be on the flip side of it. "Alice? I'm Nancy-- it's nice to meet you."
"A... mouse?" The woman seemed to be saying some rather peculiar things, so quickly that Alice didn't really have time to process them all. "I suppose it sounds like a pleasant enough place. Except possibly for the trolls." She hadn't ever had the opportunity to run into a troll, but they didn't sound nice.
"It's a pleasure to meet you as well. ...Do you like it here so far?" She felt like she should at least keep saying something while she tried to imagine what sort of place Andalasia might be. Honestly, she didn't quite get it.
"Yeah, trolls are... something else." Wow, okay, she must have sounded like a complete crazy person. Straightening out to her full height, quite a bit taller than the little girl, Nancy awkwardly took a moment to clear her throat, attempting to keep some semblance of professionalism in this place. Usually, the places she travelled had the same sort of... fantastic creatures that she saw in Andalasia.
But for some reason, this girl seemed to be unaware of any such things. And instead of basking in the rare and sought out normalcy, Nancy was acting like a complete lunatic. Londontown was located on the Isle of the Sword, right? From what Nancy could tell, that was the place where all sorts of strange, magical occurrences happened. Sure, not everyone may pay attention to the mice scurrying about, but she'd thought perhaps stories like King Arthur and Peter Pan were common knowledge.
Then again, maybe it was simply hopeful thinking, inspired by her having heard those stories all her childhood. She couldn't really imagine what stories the people in those stories had been told.
She was biting down on her tongue when the girl finally broke the awkward air by asking a gentle question, and the Queen gave a nod. "Uh... yeah, totally. I've wanted to come to London ever since I was a little girl, probably around your age. Wanted to see the Palace, and Big Ben, and all those things... What about you, Miss Alice? Are you a traveller?"

It looked as though they were both getting lost in thought on occasion, which was just fine to Alice. It meant they had something in common! Though from the way the woman acted when talking about the trolls, it seemed like she might have been feeling embarrassed to talk about these sorts of things. Perhaps, Alice thought, it might put her more at ease to know about some of her own stranger ideas; she'd had a lot of them!
The subject, happily enough, turned to travel, which it seemed the woman was fond of. "I've been to all those places, of course," she answered, "and many others too! I've even been on boats and ships a few times. But of course, the most interesting travels I've had would be the journeys in my imagination," she added with a smile, tapping a finger to her forehead. "I've had some fascinating dreams, you know, and there's one that, while I'd say it was distressing at the time... I happen to like it looking back on it. It's a long story, but would you like to hear about it?"
Maybe this was taking things a bit too far in the other direction on the strangeness scale. But she always liked telling the story of Wonderland, and she felt that the woman might be a receptive audience.
"The journeys in your imagination, huh?" Nancy couldn't help but echo the statement back with a laugh; man, this little girl reminded her a crazy amount of Morgan. She imagined the two would've gotten along well, if Morgan had been swept into this world. Of course, Morgan was back in the real New York, which for some reason or another didn't coincide with the New York on the Isle of the Statue. If she thought about it for too long, her head would start aching again.
Whether it was real or created or something in between, Nancy was simply happy to finally get to see London in some sense or another. She was seeing things she couldn't have even imagined back home; she was living an impossible, utterly mad fairy tale life, and she couldn't have been happier.
Alright, maybe with a few less 'evil stepmothers' and she couldn't be happier.
"A story?" Moving a short distance away, Nancy beckoned for the girl to join her in sitting on one of the small stone walls that lined the side walk, situating herself to better listen to the story she was sure was going to be one to remember, "I love long stories. Hit me-- I, ah, I mean... go ahead."

"It's true," Alice said with a smile. "If there's one thing I'm known for, it's my imagination." At least, that's what she's known for locally. In other places, such as Wonderland... she has a rather different reputation.
Following Nancy's lead, Alice took a seat beside her on the wall and thought for a bit. That "hit me" expression Nancy was about to use was certainly strange, but she figured it must be a foreign thing. It wasn't what was most important, anyway. Taking a deep breath, she began her story. "It started when I was in the park with my sister. It was a very nice day, but all she wanted to do was give me history lessons. Well, with all that talk of kings and successions and 1066 and so on, I was feeling dreadfully bored. So I thought I'd slip off quietly at the opportune moment..." She proceeded to explain her trip down the rabbit hole, and the various strange encounters she'd had in Wonderland. At times she paused to allow Nancy to ask questions if she wished, sometimes she skipped forward, other times she had to go back and include a detail she'd forgotten.
"...and I kept calling out to myself to 'wake up, wake up Alice!' And it turned out it was my sister calling me, and I woke up, safe under the tree with Dinah," she finally concluded. "Isn't it an interesting story? It was rather scary while I was in it, but there is a good deal of fun in it. I feel like it might make a good storybook, don't you think?"
As Nancy listened to the story the little girl shared, she had an awkward realization that almost made her laugh out loud. This kid was Alice, and not just any Alice but Lewis Carroll's Alice. And here she was, talking to this little girl who had no idea just how incredible she was.
Or maybe she knew perfectly well. She seemed to be quite the headstrong little thing, despite all of her quiet disposition. And they sat there together, on this brick wall a short distance away from a palace, and they were talking about fantasy and Wonderland and tea time and absolute nonsense that made the queen remember her childhood.
As Alice began to draw her story to a close, Nancy did her best to keep herself from beaming, instead managing to keep her expression at an interested smile. "You know what, kiddo? I think it would be the best storybook, the kind that people read over and over through the years. I would read it."
Had read it, only about a hundred times over the years, but Nancy held that comment back to herself. "So, tell me, Miss Alice; did you ever try to go back to that place? I mean... well, like you said, it was a bit scary but pretty fun. Do you ever dream of being back in that place?"

Alice got something of a strange feeling from Nancy's reaction to her story. It wasn't the kind of reaction she expected to get, but she couldn't think of a reason for it to be so. She'd told the story to a few people, but she didn't think it could have spread much beyond her circle of friends and family. After all, she hadn't written it down, only drawn it, and it was certainly too complicated of a story for anyone else to remember; that, plus the tale's inherent silliness, meant that it seemed impossible to her that the stranger could be familiar with Wonderland at all.
But whatever the cause of Nancy's reaction, it seemed that the woman enjoyed Alice's story, which made her quite proud to have dreamed it up, as peculiar a dream as it was. "You really think so? That's wonderful! I've already drawn some pictures, so now I suppose I'll have to work on the words. As much as I like good pictures in my storybooks, for this story the right words will be important." Especially when it came to the songs and poems that had come up in her adventure. She might not have remembered them all exactly, but that wouldn't excuse them being badly-done when the story was finished.
Nancy next asked if Alice had ever thought of going back to Wonderland. "...Actually, yes. I've even looked for the rabbit hole, but of course I haven't found it. I haven't had a dream that felt so... well, not exactly 'real', but... not 'not real', since then. I mean, it was a dream, but... I still feel like it happened to me." Obviously it was a hard feeling to explain. "If I could go back... I'd certainly want to do so. Though, I might need to be more careful about it, to avoid being caught by the queen!" It had seemed like the kind of place that one could explore endlessly, she thought. If she did, somehow, find herself back there, there would definitely be much more to do.
"I totally think so. And the words are always the tough part, right? I used to draw a lot, but stories were never really my... thing. I get tongue-tied." Nancy chuckled softly, remembering when she would try and write stories as a kid. Needless to say, it was a good thing she became a designer and not an author.
Alice's answer drew a soft smile onto Nancy's face, and she nodded along with the words. She had to wonder if someday, this Alice would go through the Looking Glass-- or had that been a different Alice? She was never quite certain. Either way, if it was this Alice, then she thought it best to... avoid any mention of mirrors or chess games. Was dealing with her like time travel?
"My mom used to say that whenever she woke from a dream, she'd try her hardest to get back there, but it never worked. But hey, stranger things have happened, right? Maybe this time, it won't be down the Rabbit Hole. Maybe you'll find a new way when you drift off." She stretched her legs out a moment, before leaning her head to the side, "I bet you would love where I come from. Er-- where I came from, rather. If you like fairy tales, that is."
Alice smiled back at Nancy. Somehow, she was starting to feel like Nancy understood her quite well. Perhaps they had more in common than it had seemed at first. Actually, she was sure of it. Someone who talked so much about fairies and trolls and meetings with mice must be of a similarly imaginative mindset, she thought. It was quite refreshing, actually. Most adults seemed to just put up with her stories and fantasies; most of the praise she got for them seemed to her to be patronizing. Nancy, however, wasn't like that at all.
Her next words went a long way to explaining this to Alice. Nancy's mother must have been the same! "You must come from a family of dreamers," she said. "Not much like my family, then. All except Dinah." The cat always seemed curiously receptive to Alice's ideas, so she made a good audience for stories. "A-anyway," she continued, thinking she might have dampened the mood a bit with such comments, "I do like fairy tales. Did you have all the same ones where you came from, when you were my age?" With how similar she felt they were, Alice was starting to want to know more about Nancy and her background.
