Jasmine couldn't suppress an annoying voice in her head from insisting that there "had to be a better way". The voice prattled on all afternoon, waging a no-nonsense war against the counterpoint tone of her conscience, trying to dissuade it. The voice continued even as the sun began to descend toward the horizon, and when twilight was in full, momentary reign, she was left at the crossroads.
Pausing at the palace wall that encompassed the royal gardens, Jasmine looked over her shoulder at Rajah. This was foolish, part of her said. The other insisted that she was doing everything a princess could do, but that wouldn't - shouldn't - be enough. Her heart would still be too heavy. Dangerous, the voice insisted. Foolhardy. At least tell someone. Take Aladdin with to ensure her safety. Jasmine scowled at this, self-created argument.
She could look after herself. Besides, it wasn't as if she was doing inherently perilous. There was always the possibility of danger in life.
Jasmine's expression steeled. She shrugged on the robes she'd used once so long ago during her first venture from the palace, and nodded to Rajah. The tiger glowered, a grumble of discontent in his chest. "Oh, come on. I'll be safe. I promise. I'll be back before the night is old, even." The creature continued his look of discouragement, until she scratched beneath his chin and pressed a kiss on his nose. Rolling his eyes, Rajah shifted. He used his head to boost Jasmine up, and the princess climbed onto the garden wall.
The princess looked down from her new perch at her dearest friend. "Don't worry. Promise." Rajah offered a dry narrowing of his eyes as the only response. Jasmine smiled softly, pulled her hood into place, and was off.
(OOC: I figure we can both set up what we're doing, then have the chars intersect. If you need to know what I have in mind for Jas, just PM or YIM me! Same with if you need anything changed!)

Post by Dr. Facilier on Mar 6, 2015 12:52:49 GMT -5
The man known as Dr. Facilier was currently living in Andalasia. He'd made quite an impression on the young couple that ruled the isle, and the King had extended an invitation to stay as long as he liked to the Shadow Man upon hearing of his .... predicament in Louisanatown. Despite that fact, Facilier had used the opportunity of a safe haven to do a little bit of exploring; it wouldn't hurt to have a backup in mind in case things went south in Andalasia.
Which was why he'd journeyed to Agrabah, today. It was just the sort of place that he might want to live; imbued with magic and superstition, he would fit right in. He might even do a few readings, just for a test of the atmosphere of the place.
The man's sentient shadow was behaving, currently, for the most part. It occasionally went the opposite direction that Facilier was headed, just to see if anyone would notice. If anyone did, they did a double-take and it was perfectly aligned with its master once more, the way a shadow should be.
It stole an apple from a vendor's table, slipping it into Facilier's pocket for later. Upon realizing what his shadow had done, Facilier spared a glance at it, a warning glare slipping into place on his face at the shadow's impertinence. He was trying not to be noticed right now, and something like that was sure to draw attention.
((OOC: Let me know if this is okay! I figure he's in the marketplace, currently, but that's all I know so far. XD))
Getting over the palace wall was only the first trial in Jasmine's flight from the castle. Several days before, she had decided that the guard could be lessened, lending more able bodies to uphold order in Agrabah's crime wave. That had proved a poor choice. The first night that saw the palace guard shrunken a band of thieves had exploited the shallow defenses and tried to pillage the royal treasuries. They'd been scared off partway into their nefarious deed, but still a number of the Sultan's favorite antiquities were as of yet uncounted for.
Logically, the watch on the castle was redoubled after that. Jasmine quietly stole from the edge of the garden toward one of the guard towers that punctuated the massive front wall that kept the castle segregated from the rest of the city. Had she not known the schedules of the guards as intimately as she did, Jasmine wouldn't have had a chance. She was clever, though, and Aladdin had helped along her natural talent for being quiet and subtle, so that now slipping into the tower was achieved easily enough.
There was one close call with a watchman at the bottom entrance to the tower. Jasmine had to throw a pebble to distract the sentry because he almost discovered her. Once free of the tower, though, Jasmine passed like a phantom into the shadowed labyrinth of Agrabah. Soon enough the young woman emerged in the market place. Later on in the evening it would be closed up and empty. With the sun just having fell behind the rim of the world, it was still busy enough. Vendors were working on closing their stalls and making deals with those who were passing through, or were only able to come to the market at that late hour.
Jasmine fell into the meager trickle of foot traffic easily enough. She kept her head slightly down turned and was grateful that the moon and starlight helped maintain her anonymity even more. When Jasmine passed an apple vendor, a subtle movement caught her eye. She turned to look over her shoulder and watched one of the fruit slip into the pocket of a slender man that was strolling in the opposite direction. Indignation welled up in Jasmine, but it broke apart as she opened her mouth to call him out on the theft.
Her brief experience on the streets of Agrabah when she'd met Aladdin gave her a lot of empathy to those whose lives meant they had trouble making it from one meal to the next. Jasmine looked at the apple vendor, who had his back turned, fussing with something. She quietly extended a hand and left a gold piece - much more expensive than the price of a single apple - on an empty stretch of table. Jasmine padded quickly up to catch the man who had stolen the fruit.
"Excuse me," she called out, her quiet voice cutting through the weight of night. Jasmine came to rest a few feet from the stranger. She grabbed the edge of her hood with one hand to keep it in place. Somehow the man's gaze unnerved Jasmine, and though she tended to be outspoken she felt very bare beneath his piercing eyes. "I just wanted to let you know... Well, there's a soup kitchen that's open tonight not far from here. If you need food, you can get it there with no cost. I'm headed that way myself, in fact." Jasmine didn't really like the thought of accompanying this man to her destination. She stubbornly discarded those opinions, though and carried on with her noble inclinations. "I could take you there, if you'd like."
This man was hungry enough to steal apples, after all. The promise of a free, hot meal might appeal to him.

Facilier knew that his shadow was testing the waters, so to speak, seeing how much it could get away with. And in a place like this, that would probably be more than in others. The air was rife with magic, so much so that he could feel it. Generally, where there was magic in the very air, there tended to be superstitions. And that was exactly the sort of place that he was looking for. The people that lived in such a place would be much more likely to put stock into what he said than people in a less-than-superstitius town would be.
Still, he needed to be able to see the reactions of people when they saw his shadow moving on its own; if he wasn't able to gauge how likely they were to try to turn on him, then it wouldn't do much. After all, he'd lived in Louisana almost all of his life, and he'd had to learn how to deal with prejudice and suspicion. But he needed to be able to see it in order to deal with it.
Even as Facilier was pondering where he should set up shop, he heard a young woman's voice. Glancing around, he realized that she was addressing him. Hmm, so she had seen his shadow swipe the apple, had she? But apparently, she hadn't chalked it up to his shadow or her words would be quite different. But not only had she seen his shadow steal the apple, she assumed that he needed to steal in order to eat. Which....was better than calling the authorities to take him away. There might be a reason for that, though; he would have to observe and see what he could find out.
Still, even if he didn't need what she was offering, it would be good to get a feel for more of the area. After all, if most of the citizens couldn't afford to eat, they certainly wouldn't pay for readings.
Facilier looked at the young woman, a sorrowful expression on his face, which he pulled into a small smile at her words. He was quite thin, after all; he could easily get this girl to believe that he hadn't been eating properly for a while.
"Thank you, young miss," he said, pitching his voice to sound a little bit rusty. "It's been quite some time since someone showed me such kindness."
