Unlike his previous life spending days wandering the outback in the daylight, starting from the flight to the Isle of the Statue, he had tried to get his sleep schedule on track to be more 'nocturnal'. Hence, a few days after his arrival, he was wide awake as he stood on the rooftop of one of the city's many apartment complexes.
It was an odd sight, one he wasn't entirely used to; He could barely see the stars in the midst of the city's light pollution, and most of the illumination came from the streetlights below. Thankfully, the night air was still clear enough to see any bat-people who happened to be flying around.
"Well, here we go, Joanna." He mumbled, although he spoke more to himself than to her. "Now t' see if that old codger was just hallucinatin'."
Part of him still wasn't sure. Even after seeing the photographs he'd been given and after receiving (and spending) a good chunk of the money, he still wasn't completely buying this whole story. Gargoyles... he knew little about them other than they tended to hang out on building rooftops, but little else.
Joanna, meanwhile, was rifling around through McLeach's various supplies, trying to get into the supply of rations he'd stocked for the night. He'd had the presence of mind to lock them up, leaving her with little to do other than gnaw at the sealed cooler.
For her part, she didn't really understand all this nonsense about flying people and monsters and such; she only knew that this was an opportunity for McLeach to get her more food. She was certainly on board with that. Yet, she couldn't stop thinking about the older human who had sent them on this mission... he had been different... and that was putting it nicely. There was something about him that transcended simple meals and the torture of animals at her master's behest.
Either way, thankfully, that mysterious 'man' was gone now, and she didn't have to worry about him for the time being. She just had to worry about sneaking a few extra rations.
"You keep it up, ya pea-brained lizard... whatever makes ya happy." McLeach said, shambling his way back to the cooler and sitting on top of it and looking up to the sky.
Joanna pouted, folding her arms as her master sat on the cooler, ruining any chance she might have had to get inside. She slumped to the floor of the roof, grumbling to herself and letting her eyes drift absently to the sky as well. Below, the sounds of scant motor and pedestrian traffic faded to the back of their minds.
Demona was running behind schedule. Very behind. She'd run into more trouble with the humans than she'd anticipated. Though she had 'helped' the rulers of this land and earned herself a reprieve from their justice, those that called themselves the Quarrymen still held nothing but hate for her kind. She could not care less what any of them thought of her. If anything, the hatred of the Quarrymen only served to cultivate and justify her own feelings of distrust and loathing in regards to humans in general. But she did wish they would leave her in peace to go about her business.
The Quarrymen had tried to detain her on her errand and she'd just barely gotten out of there. They couldn't kill her even if they wanted to. Well, they could, but it wouldn't last. All part of the bargain made with the weird sisters. That didn't mean she couldn't be captured. That would be more of a problem than she cared to admit to herself. The problem was there were so many of them now. Their infestation seemed to be growing at a rapid speed, and Demona looked forward to the day when she wiped them all out like the insects they were. It had to be sooner than later. They'd already come after her daughter once before and she would never let them harm her again.
The red-haired gargoyle touched the pouch at her belt as though to check and make sure it was still there. The cargo inside was precious to her and the last thing she needed was for it to fall into the hands of those fool gargoyle hating cretins. It had been something of a fight to get away from them and she'd been forced to simply climb a building and glide away. Unlike that trio of hunters this group didn't seem to have air support yet, though Demona doubted that would last forever.
Tilting her wings she tried to increase her speed as she soared over the rooftops. Though there was still some time before dawn, Demona liked to be safely tucked away in her home with plenty of time to spare. Though her human form had proven useful, it was still the time when she was weakest and most vulnerable and it wouldn't do for her to be caught while in that form, particularly while carrying her prize. The last thing she needed was for her secret to be further exposed. People would start coming for her during the day and that would be... a problem.
(OOC: Sorry this is kinda lame. Let me know if you need more to work with)
McLeach's eyelids had grown quite heavy throughout the hours of watching. Sitting around doing absolutely nothing but staring at the sky didn't do much for his ability to stay awake and alert. He'd spent many days searching the skies for that miserable eagle Marahute, but the Outback sun made it almost impossible to sleep even if he'd wanted to.
He'd trained himself a bit to work in the nights, but the sheer lack of activity was proving to make this task more difficult than he thought.
More than once, Joanna made an effort to fiddle with the locked supply chest to get at the food her master had brought with him, but to no avail. She'd actually been bold enough to reach for McLeach's keys where they rested in his pants pocket, only to have her arm grabbed and have her body thrown clear across the rooftop. A near-fall from the top of the apartment complex had her swearing off ever attempting that again... or at least waiting until they were at a lower altitude.
However, as the night began to wane...
"Huh... Huh!?" The poacher jolted upright where he sat, teeth clenching hard as if he'd been kicked in the gut. His eyes went from nearly closing to bulging out of their sockets.
In the distance, flying high overhead at a rapid pace, was a large figure resembling a human. Perhaps it might be mistaken for some hang glider out for a bit of late-night dare-devilry... if not for the tail and the claws.
For a moment, he thought he had fallen asleep and this was just a dream. However, dream or reality, his instincts as a hunter swiftly kicked in.
"Joanna!" He snapped, finding the lizard curled up out of the corner of his eye. "Joanna, wake up you idiot!"
Groggily, the goanna lizard sat up from her nap. She saw McLeach frantically running around the makeshift camp, grabbing his net-cannon from his pile of weapons (including the strange gun purchased from that kooky blue inventor). The net gun was of his own design, and had bagged him many a dingo, kangaroo and Outback-local bird. 'Oughtta be enough', he thought, 'for a flyin' lizard.'
As he tilted the net-launching device upward, he was still beside himself with awe. They really did exist... but he'd have plenty of time to consider that when she was safely locked up in a cage or whatever that old codger wanted to do with her. Leering, he pulled the trigger and sent what looked like a bundle of cloth hurtling up at his target.
Mid-flight, the bundle burst, expanding outward into a web of hempen rope. This transformation in now way slowed its speed nor did err its trajectory.
"Gotcha." He murmured to himself victoriously as he watched the net speed toward Demona.
Demona let out a scream of outrage somewhere between a howl and a roar. Before the gargoyle even realized what was happening, netting made of thick woven rope had encircled her. Her wings, claw, and talons became completely tangled and the weights at the end of the net swung tightly around each other further ensnaring her. In that moment it didn't matter where this obstacle had come from. All that mattered was that she couldn't stretch her wings to catch the air and though she hung there for what seemed like forever, her body dropped from the sky like a stone and she began plummeting toward the rooftops.
She cursed her own lack of awareness because this was most certainly the work of those fool Quarrymen again. Demona writhed and twisted in her woven prison swinging her tail and pressing her wings out. Her claws and talons were too caught up to do much good for the moment and though she tried she couldn't get a grip on the ropes. She tumbled over and over as she fell and Demona cried out again, this time in pain, when she hit the concrete roof of a building.
If she had been in her human form she most certainly would have broken something. Even now she wasn't quite sure that she hadn't but Demona was almost certain that she'd had worse falls and injuries than this in her centuries long life. It was almost as second nature as breathing the way she was able to keep moving through the pain. Her only thoughts were completely centered on freeing herself. She tried using strength alone to tear out of the rope but when that didn't work, she immediately began swiping at the thick ropes with her sharp talons.
(OOC: This can be a different rooftop or like, the very far end of the rooftop where McLeach is. Let me know if you need more.)
Hurriedly he straightened, now dropping the useless net-cannon to the ground. Without bothering to look back, he bounded across the rooftop, leaping over the alley to the neighboring building. He wasn't exactly accustomed to these surroundings, but he'd cleared pit traps wider than that in the Outback. It was just a matter of focusing on his target. As he landed, he drew his machete and approached the squirming bundle of thick rope.
Stopping, he turned to call over his shoulder. "Joanna! Get the new toy out of the pile. Might be needing it soon." He shouted, before looking back around. "Dunno about that though... seems our new friend here is havin' a bit of trouble getting out of this little mess she's in, huh?" As he continued to speak, he tossed the machete from one hand to the other. "I guess the old codger didn't know what he was talking about after all."
Granted, there were real life gargoyles when he'd believed only moments ago that it was the old man's nonsense, but this was proving to be far easier than he'd imagined if they were real.
Meanwhile, Joanna grabbed the Gravity-altering moodulator, and began the arduous task of dragging it across the rooftop. However, when she reached the edge of it, she stopped. Peering over the edge of the building, she gulped. Her small arms couldn't hope to hurl the thing across the gap, and she shouldn't jump it herself.
Instead, she set about trying to rest the barrel of it on the roof's edge, aiming it as best she could. She knew exactly enough about her master's weapons of choice to know what to pull to make the really loud 'bang', and where to point the business end.
Demona let out an aggravated growl as she continued working her way through the ropes continuing to press outward with her wings against the net. It was starting to give but it was taking what felt like forever for it to come apart even with her claws and strength. Footsteps were approaching at a rapid pace and if Demona hadn't already been working as fast and feverishly as she was able she would have tried to get herself out faster.
When the approaching figure finally came into view she was a little surprised. If this person was indeed behind her incarceration, albeit temporary, he didn't look like a Quarryman. It was helpful that they had started wearing uniforms because it made them far more identifiable and easier targets. This man was wearing clothes that didn't really fit the normal fashion of New York Town a fact she only passingly noticed because of her life's longevity. Really the fact that she was still working her way out of the net was the only reason she had even given the man's dress and origin a second thought. It wouldn't really matter soon.
She swiped out with her tail which was able to fit through the holes in the net very easily when the newcomer tried to come close to her. She spared the insufferable human a glance complete with flashing red eyes, "I warn you human, once I am free, and I will be soon, you will regert the day you tangled with me!" She snarled. With a hearty yank she was able to pull one of the giant panels open enough that she was able to slip one of her arms though but it was not enough to escape just yet thought it wouldn't be much longer.
(OOC: If you want me to have her get out in this post I can but I figured I'll have her do it in the next post if that's cool with you.)
It was safe to say that this man was certainly different from those who had opposed her throughout the years. He was no Quarryman, he was no Hunter, and he was certainly no Macbeth. Yet, he knew about her, and insisted on throwing his life away for the privilege of inconveniencing her.
McLeach chuckled, glancing over to Joanna, he finally noticed that the lizard was in no way equipped to throw any of his firearms across the gap between the buildings. However, he did notice that she was taking aim with the Moodulator.
"That's real good, Joanna. Keep 'er in yer sights." He called. On one hand he didn't want to invest his faith in the crazy contraption the weirdo doctor had built, but on the other it didn't seem as though he would have need of it either way.
"Yeah, you keep on strugglin'. Y'know, I was actually a bit worried about you for a second. The old fool who sent me to come getcha had me a bit spooked, 'specially when it turned out you weren't some senile delusion he cooked up." He said, tossing his machete from one hand to the other. "But I guess now we both know... you were nothin' to worry about after all!"
With that, he flipped the weapon in his hand and raised it, stabbing down at the writhing bundle with a malicious grin.
To say this human had nerve was an understatement. The more he spoke though, the more it registered with her that this was some sort of third party completely unassociated with the Quarrymen. It wouldn't be the first time Demona had accumulated an unknown enemy though just like with all the rest, she didn't care. She would dispatch this one in the same way she dispatched all the rest and move on with her immortal life.
Demona twisted with a superhuman speed and dodged the knife. She swatted out with her tail again just as she felt the rope finally give and she snapped it apart panel by panel with the shrieking growl that had long since earned her her name. She pushed herself back onto her feet, wriggling and shrugging out of her rope prison. She checked her bundle to make sure it was still in place before turning her rage on her would-be captor.
"Well now human, I think it's safe to say your worries in particular are over." She seethed turning her glowing red eyes on her new prey. She stalked toward him furious talons balled into fists. "Do you have any idea who I am?" She reached to grab the front of his shirt, and jerk him forward to look him in the eye, "I should make your death a long and painful one for what you've done."
McLeach's breath was cut off in a choking gasp as she burst free from the netting and seized him by his shirt. The machete jostled loose from his fingers, he struggled to push away from her. Even as feminine as her figure may have appeared, she was adept at dodging his clumsy swings and shrugging off his attempts at breaking or countering her grapple.
"J- Joanna!" He shouted across the rooftops, eyes wide in panic as he called out to the lizard. "Joanna, you brainless lizard, what're you waiting for!? Pull the trigger! Blast 'er with that thing!"
Joanna had been watching in fascination as her human partner in crime did his work in the way she was accustomed... but now that his quarry had broken free, she was staring in slack-jawed terror. At his call, however, she looked down at the massive device she was now aiming at the two of them. Clenching her teeth, her lower lip quivering nervously, she tilted the device and braced herself against it.
"Fire! FIRE, you nitwit!!!"
With a gurgle of dismay, Joanna finally pulled the trigger of the gun, set to the Moodulator mode and having no idea how to adjust it...
[Have fun with this- you can power-play Joanna fumbling to change the emotions on it and fire again.]
Demona continued to stare at this human as though venom might actually spew from her eyes and melt the skin off his face with her fury. The persistent orders to someone named "Joanna" caught her a little off guard however and she chanced a glance off in the direction the human seemed to be yelling. She didn't see anyone specifically but what she did see was the bright light of a laser careening toward her- So fast she literally had no way to avoid it and was completely immersed in the light of the beam.
It was absolutely the strangest thing. A moment ago she'd been filled with anger and vengeance than usually saturated all the way down to her bones. All of a sudden she felt... sad. Unbelievably and unequivocally filled with such a sorrow that she had not known since the dark ages centuries ago when her clan had been destroyed by the humans. She had no idea why she suddenly felt this way when only moments before she'd been furious and angry. In the back of her mind she still wanted to be but the little voice that was trying to remind her why she should be angry was being drowned out by the silent screams of her people.
Tears, hot and wet found her eyes and she found herself gasping for breath as they rolled down her cheeks in waves. Such painful sorrow that made her chest ache down to her very core. “Oh human, you have no idea what it is like to feel loss like this. You and your people don’t… could never understand.” She found herself stammering out though her grief.
(OOC: I figure we’ll have one or two more emotions before she can either get switched back to angry or back to normal and then she’ll realize the sun is coming up and she has to get out of there and take off. So a couple more posts at the most.)
This wasn't the first time McCleach had stared death in the face. Over the course of his career, many animals had come close to stabbing, slashing, impaling or severing something vital, but every time, he had managed to not only survive, but also come out of it with a trophy and/or a paycheck.
However, once again, those creatures were ones he was prepared for- ones that he'd known from the start to exist in reality.
This was something different. Confronted with the claws, fangs, burning eyes and furious demeanor of a sentient, flying she-beast, for the first time in a long time, he was genuinely afraid for his life against a living opponent.
However, the second he began to sense weakness when her expression shifted suddenly from rage to sadness, he saw a second chance. He shoved her away with all his strength and made a mad dive for his machete- surprisingly nimble for his unwieldy build and the coat that threatened to trip him up.
Meanwhile, Joanna- in her frantic state- flipped the dial on the device to another emotion and leveled the Moodulator at Demona once more. With slightly more confidence, she pulled the trigger with great expectations: after all, it had worked the first time...
Last Edit: Aug 11, 2017 17:56:10 GMT -5 by Deleted
Lost in her unbearable sorrow crumpled limply to the ground as Mcleach slipped from her grasp and shoved her away. She probably should have tried to stop him but she couldn't find the will. All she could do was stare at her hands and wonder what she had done to deserve all these years of lonliness and pain. Why her people were destined to die or betray her over and over again. Hadn't everything she'd done been for them? Hadn't she done all she could to ensure that her people wouldn't have to fear humans anymore? Didn't that count for anything?
It was only as she was being once again hit by the beam that she realize she should have tried to move or otherwise get out of the way. She had a moment of grateful relief as the heartwrenching pain of sadness seemed to leave her just as abruptly as it had settled on her, however it quickly passed as another emotion consumed her.
Joy, an unbridled happiness swept through her like a falling star on a clear night. How could anything be bad or wrong when there was so much good in the world and so much that had gone right in her life? Despite what had happened centuries ago Goliath and some of their clan had survived! They were alive! And she herself had lived to see so many centuries pass. What an amazing experience to watch the progress of the world. And she herself possessed eternal life, and more importantly, eternal youth! The possibilities that lay before her were absolutely endless!
Demona picked herself up from the ground grinning and glanced around. The human that had been trying to catch was catching up his weapon once more, "You wish to test your mettle, human?" She asked, "Then let us have a friendly spar!"
