Peter Pan had arrived in London the night before. Once again unable to locate the home of the Darlings, he had, grudgingly, decided to stay in this world for a day. It was something he had not done before-- usually his escapades into London only lasted for a night. He always made sure to head back to Neverland before the Second Star began to fade with the dawn.
Any other boy may have been a little apprehensive about being stuck in London for a full day, with no way home until the stars rose once again. But not Peter. This was a new adventure. What would London be like when everyone was awake? What sort of people would he meet? Avoiding the grown-ups would be more challenging… he would no doubt have some excellent tales to tell the Lost Boys when he returned home.
As the night drew to a close, Peter had found a large old tree in a sprawling English garden in which to take a nap. He didn't require much sleep, but he wanted to be ready to face whatever awake-London might have in store.
Except he slept longer into the morning than he had intended. The birds were singing softly and the park was beginning to have more and more visitors. A few people walking their dogs, a woman pushing a pram, and a couple walking arm and arm all passed under his tree as the morning stretched on. Had any of them bothered to look up, they would shave seen a skinny, red-headed boy dressed in green, stretched out on a branch. His green hat was drooped forward on his bobbing head, covering his eyes and keeping out the sunlight, its red feather drooping over and bobbing lightly with each soft snore.

This park... it had grown to become one of Alice's favorite places. After all, this was where it all began on that day, the day that seemed to have only just passed but also seemed to be very long ago at once. It was from this very tree that she had first strayed from her sister's side and began what would become her journey into Wonderland. And it was here that she had found herself awakening from that expecience- or so it had seemed anyway. With the help of Basil of Baker Street she had come to realize that her adventure had been real. Now that she knew that, she was ready to renew her search for the rabbit hole that would, once her preparations were completed, lead her to the truth of what had happened to her that day. And the best way to start would be to retrace her path from the beginning. I was sitting in that tree, she thought. And so she started to climb, aiming for the same branch where she'd been during the history lesson- only to be startled by the realization that someone was already up there! With a yelp of surprise she lost her grip on the tree and fell to the ground, thankfully not having made it up too far.
As she stood up and dusted herself off, Alice looked up into the tree again to get a better look. The boy who seemed to be sleeping (though he might have been woken by her surprised shout) looked to be about her age. If he was sleeping in this tree... maybe he knew something about Wonderland! As soon as she thought of it, Alice thought it seemed pretty unlikely. But it was as good a lead as any for something she'd thought was imaginary until recently. If nothing else, she might make a new friend.
Alice's startled cry did indeed wake Peter Pan from his dreams. He sat up, and in one motion drew the small blade from his belt as his hat fell into his lap. Looking all around, he saw that he was not about to be set upon by Pirates or Indians. In fact, it took him a moment to remember just where he was.
He snapped his fingers. "Oh, that's right. I'm in England." Shaking his head, he sheathed the blade and peered over the side of the branch in time to see Alice brush off her dress. When she looked up, their eyes met, and Peter raised his eyebrows.
A girl with very yellow hair. Even more yellow than Slightly's. Maybe even as yellow as Tinkerbell's. And her dress was blue. Even blue-er than Wendy's.
Swinging his leg over the side of the branch, Peter leaned forward, resting his forearms on his legs as he looked down at her.
"Were you trying to climb a tree in a dress?"
He was mildly impressed. Peter Pan had already passed a few judgements on dresses-- namely that they were for girls only and the primary reason girls had less fun that boys. But, seeing as there had never been any Lost Girls in Neverland, he had little first-hand experience. Perhaps he had too hastily damned them.

It was a good thing that Alice had been too busy taking care of herself to notice Peter's drawn knife- otherwise she might have had a bad first impression of him. As it was, though, she found him a very curious sight. More so even than Basil, he looked like a character out of a storybook- much like many of the residents of Wonderland, in fact. As their eyes met, Alice clasped her hands in front of her as she often did, while trying to think of what exactly to say. There were a lot of ways this sort of meeting could go wrong, after all. However, the boy happened to be the first to speak, saving the trouble.
"Ah... yes, I was. I've done it before, though now that you mention it, I suppose it's not the best way to go about it," Alice answered with a laugh. "You... wouldn't happen to have seen any unusually large rabbit holes nearby, have you? ...Or for that matter, unusually large rabbits? White ones, perhaps?" She felt a bit nervous about bringing it up just yet, but reasoned that this boy, dressed in odd green clothes and sleeping in a tree, probably wasn't about to judge her for her search.
Last Edit: Apr 24, 2015 22:31:01 GMT -5 by Deleted: Hadn't mentioned the color of the rabbit originally, but figured it made sense to do so.
"Large rabbits?" Peter repeated. He scrunched up his face and rubbed at his hair, seriously considering her question. Others might have dismissed it as a strange question-- but Peter had seen many things in his long life. Unfortunately, unnaturally large rabbits weren't one of them. Nibs wore a rabbit skin, but it wasn't white.
Finally, Pan gave a shrug and shook his head. "Not lately, no. Not white ones, anyway. What do you need a rabbit for? Are you hunting?" He pulled his hat back on and pushed himself of the branch, floating down till he was standing on the ground in front of her. She didn't have any weapons he could see, so he wasn't sure how she planned on hunting.
He couldn't help but compare her to Wendy. The yellow-haired girl was a bit shorter and wore different shoes. She didn't talk as much as Wendy-- not yet anyway-- but she had a nice voice. He wondered if she could tell stories like Wendy could. Was that something all girls did? The mermaids prattled on constantly, but there was never really a story when all was said and done. He noticed, too, the way she held her own hands in front of her. It seemed odd, to hold your own hand. He was caught between wanting to try it himself and wanting to take her hand in his own just so she wouldn't look so lonely.
Then he remembered. When you meet people, you're supposed to introduce yourself.
"I'm Peter Pan. What's your name?" He smiled expectantly, his hands on his hips.
"Hunting? Not at all, I'm-" Alice began to explain, before stopping to watch the boy float slowly to the ground, stepping back in surprise. "Goodness!" she exclaimed with wide eyes. She had to look around again to be sure she hadn't mistakenly gone down the rabbit hole already. But no, she was still right where she was, along with a boy who could float to the ground like a feather.
Peter Pan was his name, it seemed, and as he introduced himself, Alice's surprise began to give way to fascination. She approached him more closely, trying to get a better look at him and his clothes. "Alice. Alice Liddell," she answered, trying to work out the material his shirt was made of. "...Where did you come from? Seeing you float like that... You're from another world, aren't you? Because I usually don't see such things in London." Basil, for instance, was fairly ordinary by comparison. He was a detective who just happened to be a talking mouse. People moving against the normal rules of gravity was something entirely different. "Actually, the last time I saw something like that was when I fell down that rabbit hole to Wonderland... You haven't come from there, have you?" she asked, before suddenly realizing she might not have been specific enough. "Of course, that's only what I called it, I don't recall hearing its real name... It's ruled by the Queen of Hearts, if that makes it any clearer."
Peter blinked, tilting his head as she came closer to inspect him. He decided that he had impressed her, which pleased him to no end.
"Alice." He repeated to himself, mostly so he'd remember it later. Most of the Lost Boys had had names once, but he, and the boys themselves, had long forgotten what they were. Hence the current nicknames of Cubby, Slightly, Nibs, etc. The Twins didn't even have names. They were just "the Twins."
While she rambled on, he folded his legs up and floated before her in a sitting position, his hands clasping his angles. Sure, he was showing off. It wasn't every day he met someone who didn't know about flying. She was properly amazed by it.
"Of course no one flies in London. There aren't any pixies here." He said this matter-of-factly. "And not many happy thoughts, I suspect." Not with so many grown ups around, at any rate. It seemed he and Alice were far enough off the usual path that the other visitors in the park had not yet noticed the floating boy.
"Me? I'm from Neverland-- not Wonderland. Is the Queen of Hearts a rabbit?" It made sense that, if wonderland was down a rabbit hole, that it must be a land of rabbits.
At first, Alice thought she might have been boring Peter. A boy from another world, with the ability to defy gravity, would be forgiven for finding her mundane in her current circumstances. Thankfully, however, this turned out not to be the case; he still seemed quite interested in what she had to say, and the feeling was of course mutual.
First, came the revelation of the source of Peter's ability. "Pixies? Those are like fairies, aren't they? I've always wanted to go somewhere that fairies live." She was almost surprised that she hadn't met any fairies in Wonderland- it had seemed like the kind of place she might find them. As for happy thoughts, Alice thought she had plenty of those- though, would happy imaginings count? That was a question that might end up having to wait until she knew more about the pixie part.
"No, the Queen of Hearts is... well, she looks more or less like a person, at least. More so than the other playing cards, I should say. There was only the one rabbit..." she explained, trying her best to clear up any confusion. "Anyway, why is your home called 'Neverland'? If you come from there, it has to be a land at least some of the time. Or does your house fly too, and you just live in the sky?" "Never land" indeed.
Peter had to pause and really consider her first question. Finally, he nodded. "All pixies are fairies. But not all fairies are pixies," he decreed. "Neverland has heaps of 'em. Pixies, I mean."
They tended to plants, animals, and the changing seasons. Peter and the Lost Boys didn't go into Pixie territory often. They were always too busy to be any fun. Except for Tinkerbell, that is. Tink had her responsibilities in Pixie Hallow, but she snuck away a lot to go on adventures with the boys.
As Alice tried to explain the Queen of Hearts, Peter stretched his legs out and stood again, crossing his arms. Half of what Alice said was gibberish to him. A queen that looked more like a person than a playing card? Still, he got the sense that this Queen was older-- a grown up. Otherwise she would be a princess, right? Once he worked that out he was considerably less interested in the Queen. The rabbit, however...
Before he could ask about the rabbit, Alice asked a few more questions of her own. Peter grinned and laughed. It wasn't a mean laugh-- he wasn't laughing at her, by any means. But he greatly enjoyed explaining his home to other children. Out of all the questions he'd been asked about his home, these were new.
"Neverland is always land." He explained. "Its an island. Its called Neverland because kids go there so they'll never have to grow up. You have to fly to get to Neverland. Its very far away from here. And I don't live in a flying house. I live under Hangman's tree."
Peter started to try and explain Hangman's Tree to Alice, but didn't know where to start. Suddenly, he had an idea, and his expression brightened. "Would you like to see it?"
If there were many pixies, Alice thought, Neverland must be a very lively place. Which, on the one hand, could be a good thing; it'd be good to know there were always others about to talk to. But on the other hand, it could also be bad; it would be hard to find any peace and quiet if there were always pixies fluttering about everywhere like a swarm of bees. She hoped the situation was somewhere happily in the middle. And of course, Peter himself was evidence that there were other sorts of beings than pixies living in Neverland, so that was another thing to think about.
After talking a bit about her own story, Peter explained Neverland a bit more clearly. An island that children fly to, where they never have to grow up. It sounded just as wondrous as Wonderland! And so when Peter asked if she'd like to see it herself, there was only one possible answer.
"Oh, of course I would! It sounds quite fascinating. ...Though, I'm not sure I like the sound of 'Hangman's Tree'. But if you live there, it can't be too bad of a place." Perhaps that was just what Peter called it. Boys liked edgy hideout names like that, didn't they?
Peter's grin widened when Alice agreed to come to Neverland. "Great!" He reached out and took her hand, already flying off his feet. But before he could even begin to try and drag her off the ground-- having forgotten, again, that humans needed pixie dust to fly-- he realized he had a problem.
He settled back on his feet and sighed dejectedly. "We can't go. The sun is up, and the stars are gone. You can't get to Neverland without the stars."
Peter released her hand and crossed his arms, rubbing his chin as he thought. "… I guess I'll have to take you tonight, when the sun goes down." The red-headed boy glanced around the garden. What was he going to do until then?
He snapped his fingers. "We can't leave until tonight, but we could practice your flying in the mean time. Is there any place around here where the grown ups won't see?"
Then, his stomach growled. Peter looked down at his belly like it was a traitor for wasting his time. "… and food. I'm starving."
If Alice didn't have food, he would figure something out. He often stole pies and other sweets while visiting London. Usually he took them planning on sharing with the Lost Boys, but usually ended up eating them all himself before he even made it back home to Neverland.
Alice barely had time to think before Peter was already attempting to drag her away into the sky. However, she didn't seem to be leaving the ground quite so easily. Fortunately, he didn't try to go very far, so she only had to skid on her heels a short distance before being released. She hadn't expected to be taken that very instant, which was why her disappointment at the delay in her visit came alongside a hint of relief. He needed to navigate by the stars to reach Neverland, apparently. Alice briefly wondered why he couldn't just use a map or a compass instead of such primitive methods, but... well, it was flying by magic. Presumably it just didn't work that way.
In any case, Peter seemed to have a good idea for what they could do next- but first came the issue of food. "My older sister brought the food," she explained. "I wouldn't mind sharing some of it- perhaps she won't mind either. But, you'll have to come with me so you're not such a stranger." It didn't seem like Peter and her sister would get along too well, but who knows, maybe it would work out at least well enough for him to get fed.
"And if you're looking for places we can fly without being seen... I would think we'd need to head into the woods for that." Maybe she might end up catching a glimpse of the rabbit hole from above.
"Older sister?" Pan repeated, scratching at his head. Finally, he shrugged. "Alright then. Take me to her." Peter waited expectantly, ready to follow Alice wherever she lead. "You should eat too, you know. Its not easy to fly on an empty stomach. Hungry is not a happy thought."
Being called a stranger pleased Pan to no end. It made it sound like an adventure. He hoped this sister was easily scared. He had a wicked need to spook someone or play a mean joke. If she wouldn't share any food, he probably wouldn't be very nice in return.
When Alice suggested they use the nearby cluster of trees as a place to practice, Peter shielded his eyes and looked over at them. "Hmm…" He remembered how terrible Wendy was at flying-- she'd flap her arms like wings even though it didn't really do much good. It was the main reason why Tink and the Lost Boys called her "Wendy Bird." Yes, Alice would probably need a lot of practice. And the trees were as good a place as any, so long as no pesky adults showed up.
Finally, he nodded. "First we find your sister and get some food. Then we can see how you do at flying."
Peter himself was an excellent flyer. The best, probably. Well, the best as far as he was concerned. And his opinion was the only one that mattered.
Leading Peter to the picnic blanket where her sister was waiting, Alice came upon an unexpected, amusing sight. "Is... Is she asleep?" she asked as she failed to stifle her laughter. Looking closely, she confirmed that her sister was indeed sleeping. "She is! And with a book in her hands as well. She must have fallen asleep reading while waiting for me." She smiled as she turned back to Peter before looking through the food basket. "I suppose, then, she won't be able to complain if I take some for each of us." She took her own share of the food before offering some to Peter, sitting on the blanket beside her sleeping sister.
"Now... about flying. How will I go about it?" Alice asked. "You mentioned pixies, and happy thoughts. Is that all you need? Is there a sort of... technique to it?" Depending on how it worked, Alice thought, it seemed like it could be either difficult or easy to fly. But once she learned how, it would be very convenient!
"Oh yes, one more thing before I forget," Alice added, with a snap of the fingers. "You've invited me to your magical land... I wonder, would you like to come with me when I return to mine? I'd appreciate the company." It was the natural way to repay the favor, and in any case Alice thought it would be better to have someone with her in Wonderland. Maybe he could even help her with her disguise and keeping away from the Queen.
Peter followed behind Alice on two feet, opting not to fly for now. He looked from Alice to the sleeping grown-up and floated forward, looking down at the book that lay open in the woman's lap. He wrinkled his nose.
"There aren't any pictures in this book." Grown ups were impossible.
His attention was drawn to the picnic basket and he drifted over to watch over Alice's shoulder as she picked out some food. He took the wrapped-up sandwich and apple she gave him and sat comfortably on the blanket by Alice, giving her sister one more suspicious glance. Finally, he shrugged and took a large bite of his sandwich while Alice started to talk about flying.
She rattled off question after question and Peter listened to *most* of it. He again was reminded of Wendy. By the time Alice finished speaking Peter had eaten most of his sandwich and was eyeing the basket again.
"Oh, flying's easy." He smiled, turning his bright brown eyes back to his new blond friend. "You just need faith, trust, and pixie dust." Peter took another bite and continued to talk through his food - "The happy thought lifts you up. Faith and trust keep you going. And the…" he swallowed … "Dust. Thats the magic part."
Her next question perked his interest. He was of course eager to see new things-- and have adventures. "Alright," he agreed, grinning. "Its a deal."
