The two cats flinched as Ariel let out a shrill whistle, distracted from their meal who had just regained his senses thanks to the Princess. Taking a quick calculation of his situation he decided that the best option was to reach forward and tug hard on the whisker of his captor. Am screeched and dropped the mouse, now using both front paws to rub at the sharp pain in her face and vainly check if anything was missing. On cue Toby and Max bounded into the room, barking as they charged their natural enemies. Si and Am hissed and rushed up the nearest statue, depicting the Olympian Goddess Athena, for safety. Seeing that the two dogs had the situation in hand Basil rushed over to help Ariel get untangled from the curtain.
"Princess. Are you injured?" The detective had a great deal of concern in his tone. Though it was hard to admit he put the two of them in harms way by insisting on going off alone. "Don't despair. Toby and Max have them trapped and I'll have you out shortly."
On top of the statue the two thieves nodded to each other in silent agreement. While Am baited the two dogs with a series of rude faces and taunts Si managed to clamber down closer to the floor and grab the shawl/cloth and yoyo from Ariels spilled belongings. Rushing back up to join her sister they both giggled as they threw the material over the heads of the two dogs, dropping off the statue and using the two confused canines as stepping stones to safely reach the floor. Taking an end of the yoyo string each they circled Max and Toby, tying the shawl securly over the sheepdog and hound. Having regained the upper hand the twins slinked up behind Basil who was distracted with a particulalry stubborn knot in the curtain rope. Si dropped his deerstalker back on his head, giving it an extra push down over his eyes.
"What in blazes?" He shouted out in shock and annoyance.
The detective tripped backwards trying to straighten his hat, finding himself in a similar dilemma to earlier as Si and Am stood next to each other, crouched down preparing to pounce with their tails raised like a pair of snakes ready to strike.
"We tricked and trapped your drooling pests."
"Have you any last requests?"
Basil looked around quickly for an escape route as he was backed against a statue base. No chance to outrun them both. However, the wooden bucket was quite close. Hopefully Ariel had managed to free herself enough to reach it...and with the two cats close enough to each other....just maybe. Basil stood as tall as he could muster with his chest puffed out bravely, adjusting his had and fixing his coat collar.
"Why yes I do ladies." He said with a renewed tone of superiority. "I'd like you both to yell out in confusion as you both get trapped under a bumbersnatch."
Ariel felt utterly useless. She may have been helpful in one way or another, but being able to whistle while Mr Basil faced the two thieves head on wasn't a consolation to her. Toby and Max were there almost instantly, and once Ariel was satisfied that the two dogs had saved Basil - for the moment, at the very least - she returned to the curtains that still bound her from waist to foot. Hardly had the princess awkwardly hunched over to work at the uncanny knots than Basil was in front of her, inquiring about her safety and lending both paws to freeing her. "I'm fine," she insisted, tugging stubbornly at the cloth, "are you?"
After all, in Ariel's mind she had only been covered by a curtain. Basil had been hit into a wall and pinned there by the two cunning felines that were trying to burglarize the museum. She was making progress when Toby and Max's barks turned to confused, protestant snarls. Ariel looked up just in time to see the two cats about to converge on the great mouse detective. "Mr Basil, look out!" Too late. One of the felines pressed his previously stolen hat over his eyes and he stumbled back and away.
Ariel tried to kick at the other cat, but it was out of reach. She wasn't a fool, however. Rather than do something rash or unwise to try to help that would only entangle her further, Ariel's fingers worked fervently at the last few tangles around her feet. Her gaze kept flicking between her work and the plight that Basil was in. With a final yank, Ariel was free, and already moving. The princess was no fool, but she did happen to be very ingenious - if a bit unorthodox.
She padded across the floor, soundless because of her slippers, and unnoticed by the two thieves, who had cornered Basil yet again. Ariel grabbed onto her bumbersnatch and closed in carefully behind the cats as their furry backs were turned, tongue between her teeth in concentration. Basil caught on, if he hadn't predicted Ariel's entire scheme from the moment he'd recovered his bearings. With a triumphant motion, the princess slammed her bumbersnatch down, covering both animals and putting her weight on the bottom of the cylindrical object to ensure escape was impossible.

The detective let out a sigh of relief when Ariel caught Si and Am. The two felines started yelling out as they were trapped, thankfully their struggles were not enough to shift their improvised prison.
"Exemplary work Princess. Glad we were on the same timing. I'd better help Toby and Max." Basil got to work untangling the yoyo string holding the shawl, which was easily removed by the sheepdog and hound.
"What's going on in here?"
The curator, a bushy bearded, bald and portly individual by the name of Cooper, rushed into the room followed by several staff members and security guards. Taking a look around he tried to piece together what had happened. Unfortunatly with two dogs, a mouse, scattered random personal items and a princess holding down a wooden bucket with screeching coming from under it, it was impossible to determine the events leading up to such a scene. Basil stepped forwards to take charge of the explanation.
"Good evening, Basil of Baker street. Agent of the Crown. Representitive of Mousedom. Well first off. If one of you gentlemen would kindly take over holding the bumblersnatch down. There's a good fellow. To cut things short your museum was in the process of being robbed."
"Robbed?" The curator blustered.
"Yes. The Princess Ariel of the Shell Kingdom has contained the two culprits. I suggest you call someone with expertise in containing vicious felines before you try and retrieve the stolen items they're carrying. Now please, don't be hasty with the thanks, or congratulations or sending in the press..."
As the mouse rambled on the curator and staff turned to Ariel, one taking over holding down the bucket and the rest congratulating her on preventing the theft, helping her gather her belongings and one bringing in an empty box to transfer the cats into. Basil considered raising an objection but thought better of it. Toby, sensing the detectives frustration, lay down next to him and gave him a friendly nudge as if to say 'well, I thought you did good'.
Ariel registered that her unconventional ploy had worked, and that Mr Basil was safe. After that, though, things happened in whirling, quick succession. Before the princess quite realized what had transpired, she found herself in a clot of individuals including members of the museum's security, headed by Curator Cooper, being barraged with questions that she was never given the time to answer. Whenever Ariel started a "Well I-," or an "Oh, but it wasn't me-," and even a few, "Now, just a moment,"'s, she was interrupted.
For a clot of people who appeared interested in her, they certainly weren't interested in what she had to say. Ariel became increasingly flustered, and before she could really get anything more than her stammering, disjointed replies out, the conversation going on around her was wrapped up, as if she weren't even there. Curator Cooper said something about how, "Well, the nefarious plot has been stopped, now we must deal with the repercussions," and within a handful of sentences instructed those workers around him promptly.
The miniaturized throng dispersed, going about their assignments, and Cooper gave a last thanks before scooting out towards the more populated area of the exhibit. Saying how he needed to settle the guests and arrange for the media to take this story by the horns, that a near-disaster was phenomenal publicity for the museum, asking her to stay put for the moment. Ariel blinked, standing in the same spot that she had been before, in a room suddenly empty save for Mr Basil, Max, Toby and herself.
Ariel turned to the detective and two canines. "I-," she said, perplexed, "I don't know what happened just now, exactly." The princess looked down and noticed that in the shuffle, her box full of belongings had been pressed into her grasp. Shaking off a bit of her confusion, Ariel walked over to Mr Basil, who was very bad at masking his disgruntled disappointment. "Thank you, Mr Basil. I'm sorry," she sat the box on the floor and knelt down, scratching Max's ear with one hand.
The redhead's blue eyes sparkled. "If it's all the same to you, I'd rather slip out of here while they're gone. The way Mr Cooper talked about the media doesn't sound the least bit fun." Ariel plucked her belongings up and propped the box on one hip as she straightened. "No," she added decisively, "I'd much rather send a letter with the real story about the courageous Great Mouse Detective." Ariel smiled knowingly at Basil, then she screened her mouth unnecessarily with one hand and whispered, "Do you know about a less... direct exit, so we can get out of here before we're stuck?"

After the excitement of the crowd dissolved and Ariel caught up with the group again she was offering to send a letter to the newspapers with the full details of what had transpired. Basil dropped his frustrated thoughts when he noticed how perplexed and confused she was after being crowded by the staff. In addition the detective felt a pang of guilt of his own jealousy at being overlooked, as a Princess perhaps she'd been the victim of unwanted attention and mobbing on previous occasions.
"I'm dreadfully sorry you had to go through that Princess. I'd suggest you take deep breaths. You may also think up things you really wanted to say a little too late. Unfortunatly this is normal."
He tried to hide how chuffed he was when she complimented him. It was suggested that the group make their exit before they were showered with more attention. Basil signalled for Toby to help him push open a door labelled STAFF ONLY.
"Well, there is one way out. Hope you aren't opposed to a little rule bending." He gave a playful 'shhh' gesture.
The mouse led the group through the storage areas. Taking a roundabout route around a maze of crates and half unpacked exhibits. Occasionally he'd signal the group to hold to let a guard go past them. Though this wasn't a case so much as a discreet exit from a case the detective did get a bit of thrill from the stealth and the gamble of getting caught wandering around unauthorised in a restricted area. Eventually they came to a loading area, several rolling shutters closing off the truck stop area.
"Okay, I'll secure the way out and the three of you can proceed with the exfiltration."
Climbing up a wire connected to the control panel, Basil flicked a switch to roll the shutters up. Giving Ariel, Max and Toby time to get out he reversed the switch again and scurried back down and rushed under the shutter just as it closed.
When Mr Basil asked - rhetorically, but still - if Ariel was alright with bending the rules a little bit, the princess gave a cunning smile. If only Mr Basil could talk to Eric or Daddy about my thoughts on bending the rules, she thought to herself with a knowing mirth. Growing up with six older sisters who were more than happy to abide by the rules and restrictions set down by King Triton and general court conduct, Ariel was strikingly rebellious. Rebellious in general, but astonishingly so in comparison to her siblings.
Honestly, in Ariel's mind she had envisioned nothing more than slipping through a side-entrance that was significantly less crowded than the main one that was being used to funnel guests for the event that evening. Either there was no such option in existence, or Mr Basil didn't want to acknowledge that there was, because a moment later the unlikely group was spiriting down dimly - if at all - lit corridors into broad, dusty storage rooms.
Ariel didn't care if they were going through the prudent exit. The way that Basil lead them was much more enjoyable, and the added layer of suspense was a bizarrely good way to help the princess calm down gradually from the drama of the thief-catching from minutes before. Keeping Max quiet was managed with surprising ease, thanks to him following Toby as a role model for stealth. Ariel skirted around a passing guard as Basil broke off from them to get to a panel of sorts.
There was a shiver and a groan, and one of the shuttered doors in the room they'd come to began to rise. "Now," she urged in a whisper to the dogs framing her! Together the trio rushed beneath the half-open door - Ariel ducking beneath it - and were out in a deserted back courtyard. The scene was lit by lamplight through the back wall and gate that blocked the courtyard from the street that wound behind the museum, and everything was under a layer of wet from a light rain that must have fallen when Basil, Ariel and the dogs were inside.
The princess turned after her quick survey of the scene in time to see the Great Mouse Detective slip beneath the giant shutter with not a second to spare. Ariel beamed at Basil when, with the air of dusting oneself off - nonchalant and dismissive of his series of heroics, as if he did such things everyday (which, Ariel mused, was likely the case)."Absolutely. Didn't we, Max?" The sheepdog bobbed his head to momentarily send tufts of fur out from before his eyes, showing that they were wide and gleeful as he gave a merry "Wuff!"
"Really, Mr Basil. Thank you for spending the day with me. I didn't expect to have this much fun, or learn so much, and in just one visit to Londontown."

"It was my pleasure Princess Ariel." Basil bowed, with Toby doing the same. "I must say I enjoyed your company tonight, the unplanned escapade with those two villains pales in comparison. You have a very curious and outgoing viewpoint, I'm beginning to suspect life in the Shell Kingdom is quite eventful." Feeling hot breath blowing at him he turned to find Max was awkwardly close and panting happily. "Yes, It was good meeting you too Max."
The detective looked upwards as he heard the bells of Big Ben chime. Checking his pocket watch confirmed how late it was getting, it had just turned one in the morning. Perhaps it was best if they concluded things for tonight. Pulling himself up by the hounds collar, Basil retook his riding position and led the group out to the main street. Checking ahead he made sure the media or other busybodies weren't hovering around so that Ariel had a clear route back to her carriage.
"I suppose this is where we part ways Princess. If you're ever in London again or require assistance I suggest you take this." He handed over a small card with his name and address on it. "Sorry about the scale but you have the both good and bad fortune of being my first human client. Perhaps a magnifying glass or microscope could help? Just make sure to knock at the smaller door. I don't know what those two fellows upstairs are playing at. Worst violin performance I've ever heard."
Basil and Doctor Dawson Consulting Detective and Doctor 221 Baker Street
"Also. Perhaps a momento of this evening would also be appropriate. Something to add to your collection."
Basil fished around in his pockets for something he could give as a souvenir. His watch? Too easily broken. His pipe? Nope, it wouldn't do to get a Princess to start smoking. He'd left his revolver, lockpicks and other career tools back at the flat...that just left....He reached up and plucked his deerstalker off. Holding it up with both hands he offered it as a gift. He had a few spares back home anyway.
"Hope you get some use out of it. Makes for good travel wear. Keeps the ears warm."
After handing his hat over he finished escorting his friends to their transportation, turning Toby in the opposite direction to begin the trek home. With one last farewell he spurred faithful Toby to his full speed.
"Safe travels and good fortune Princess. I shall not say goodbye as I feel in this new world our paths may cross again. Allonsy Toby."
Ariel smiled with genuine, heartfelt thanks as Mr Basil returned the thanks that she had given, saying that her company was enjoyable to him. She was glad. With her penchant for asking unusual questions, or being distracted by the strangest subtle details, Ariel was worried that she might have annoyed the Great Mouse Detective throughout their time together. Mr Basil was not a mouse who was good at hiding his true inclinations. In just their brief time together, Ariel had found that out. So, if he had been lying she would have known it.
"Oh," she said in soft surprise as Basil procured a business card for her, "thank you." Ariel reached out and took the thing. Being no more than the size of the mouse's palm who handed it to the princess, it was scarcely more than a shred of confetti to her. Ariel grinned while she tucked the card into the shell that she wore around her neck. By the time she'd successfully stowed it, Basil had taken off his iconic hat and was offering it to Ariel as a memento for their time together.
"Oh, Mr Basil no, I couldn't." Ariel tried to gently dissuade the mouse from giving her his hat. It suited him so well, and was obviously of great personal importance to him. Basil was a very stubborn mouse, however, and after he stood his ground for a short breath, she relented. The hat itself fit her littlest finger perfectly, and Ariel's lips spread in fond thought as she looked at it. "Thank you," she whispered.
"And here," Ariel leaned down as Mr Basil mounted Toby and pressed a soft kiss between the mouse's now bare ears, "something to remember me by." Toby gave a sniff most assuredly meant to ensure that the princess didn't forget him. "And for the brave boy, of course." Ariel pecked Toby on the crown, and was rewarded with a happy yip and a sound lick across her cheek that made her giggle.
After the formal goodbyes, Basil and Toby lead Ariel and Max back around the museum to where their carriage awaited. Dmitri opened the door for the princess and her pet as they approached, showing a well-lit compartment that looked cozy and dry in comparison to soggy Londontown. Max gave Toby a last nuzzle and then, mournfully, trudged to the carriage, whining softly all the while. Ariel bid her two new friends a last farewell, and even turned to wave as Dmitri was closing the door behind her.
Ariel cast the small clothe curtains that had been drawn over the windows aside and looked through the rain-streaked glass pane of the window. Basil and Toby had turned around and were now bounding deeper into the city, turning quickly to a shadowed smudge and then disappearing altogether. The redhead let the curtains fall to cover the window again and leaned back into her padded seat. Max had curled up on the opposite side, and was looking at her pitifully. "I know, Max. I'll miss them too."
The princess sighed, then gave a knowing smile to her furry companion that made him perk up with hesitant optimism. "But don't you worry. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing Mr Basil again soon. He said so, and he is the Great Mouse Detective." Max elicited a joyous wuff, and then was content enough to drop immediately into a snooze. Ariel turned back to the window as the carriage jostled into motion, watching the sliver of Londontown glimpsed through the curtains slipping by.
If only she knew how dire the circumstances of their next meeting would be...
