"Quicker how? What are you doing?"
Basil, for all his experience, didn't really have much interaction with humans on his investigations. They were always there in the background but he tended to stick with species his own size and they with theirs. This led him to form a bit of a superiority complex when he was on a case. When he was picked up by Jane the detective suddenly realised how he wasn't fully in charge here. Worse still when she grabbed a vine and took a running start before leaping into the trees and moving through them with incredible grace, leaping from vine to vine, running and sliding across branches thick and thin. Basil meanwhile was clinging onto her shoulder for all he was worth, nearly getting blown off by the momentum.
"Miss Porter. While this is faster I think we should.." He stopped as he noticed the map slipping from his grip, using his tail to snag it before it blew away. Unfortunatly this left him with no free appendage to save his hat from going. "Oh bother. I'll never see that again."
After a few hours (and not the many more the detective predicted) they made it to a treetop near their intended destination. Basil dropped off onto the branch trying to resume his calmness now that he was in a little more control of the situation, which was hard to do with his fur standing on end and his ears blown back. For a few seconds he grumbled as he tried to fix his appearance and untangle the map from the knot his tail had formed before checking their next step.
"Yes, that certainly was quicker. Now if we could just get our bearings and...hello."
As the mouse paced along the branch he noticed that he'd walked into a carved marking. Rolling the map back up he began a quick inspection of the marks, finding it was a claw pattern (which was probably a little more obvious to Jane from her overhead view).
"Hmm, on first glance it seems like these are the clawmarks of a member of the Panthera Pardus family. Or Leopard. But just one problem. If you'd lend me your hand just a second Miss Porter." Basil guided her hand to the mark and adjusted her fingers to fit. "You'll notice that this was done by a creature with more dexterity than a jungle cat. Maybe someone holding a weapon or tool of some kind? It's somewhat strange."
The detective mused on the marking for a second before he remembered the real reason they came and returned to inspecting the map, placing it down so Jane could see it.
"Can you see anything that may be a city Miss Porter?" The mouse strained his neck trying to see over the foliage around them, silently glad that a larger person was assisting this mission.
ooc: Sorry if I rushed the travel too much. I'll edit if needed.

Jane was secretly pleased (at least a little bit) by Basil's discomfort. After the remarks he'd made, he deserved a bit of ... payback, if you will. She wasn't a vicious person, nor did she want Basil to be injured in any way. It was simply gratifying to ... get back at him for insinuating that she was ... less than capable.
Throughout her time spent in the jungle, Jane had gotten much better at travelling by vine. Which was a very good thing for Basil; if he'd been with her during her first few months here, they both would have been in a bit of trouble.
But she could travel fairly quickly this way, now, and it was certainly faster than walking, ESPECIALLY if they'd stuck to a mouse's pace.
It didn't take as long as Jane thought it might to reach their destination.
As Basil was composing himself, the Englishwoman was peering around, getting her bearings. She didn't usually come out this far, especially not alone, and it would be good to make sure that they could return the way they'd come.
Jane looked down at the print that Basil had indicated, frowning.
"I'd say it looks more like a Leopard print, but I'm certainly no expert on jungle cats," she said, bending down to peer at it a bit closer. No, Tarzan was the expert on ... most things in the jungle, come to think of it. They really should have brought him along.
But they hadn't. And it would take too much time to go get him. For better or for worse, it was just the two of them.
Her frown turned puzzled when Basil mentioned the mark had been made with more dexterity than a jungle cat would have, which was ... disconcerting, to say the least.
"Yet another puzzle to add to your collection, it seems," she said, straightening once more.
Basil asked if she could see anything that looked like a city, and Jane obligingly looked around.
She was about to report that, no, there wasn't anything that looked like a city when she spotted what appeared to be the top of some sort of wall.
"Over there!" she said, pointing in the direction of the mysterious structure. She'd lift him if need be, but Jane had already subjected Basil to an unceremonious grab earlier. Once a day was quite enough, she was sure.

When Jane pointed out the structure Basil took note of the direction and rushed towards the tree trunk to begin his descent, finding grips in the bark to use as handholds on the climb down.
"We'll probably be better off at ground level from this point. Try to make a stealthy approach."
Partially true but mostly the mouse was just dodging any opportunity for Jane to grab him again. He did notice a slight smirk when he recovered from the shock of her travel method. When he reached the ground the detective gave Jane a chance to catch up, despite the fact she was practically ahead of him, before heading towards the structure. A short distance away they found a massive stone wall blocking their way. Basil began inspecting the designs carved into it.
"More of these claw marks, but this is the really interesting part. The patterns carved into this wall are evocative of several different cultures. A little roman here, mesoamerican over here, egyptian. It's like one culture combining others, or one that was the root of them. Did the stories say anything about this?"
The detective moved on down the wall looking for a gate or other entrance, eventually finding a collapsed segment opening a gap into the city itself. Peering in Basil was awestruck by the structures inside, mainly the ziggurat type constructs. Probably temples or other important buildings? A low growl pulled him from his thoughts. It sounded like a large cat. Ducking back out and pressing himself against the wall he waved one arm out trying to push Jane into cover, forgetting the height difference again and doing little good in the attempt.
"Take cover Miss Porter. We're not alone." He whispered.
A shadow formed on one of the walls in sight. At this point it was positive that the creature was a leopard, pacing slowly. Then the unexpected part, the shadow following the movements of its owner stood up on its hind legs, upright like a man. Basil briefly had a mental grapple between his scientific curiosity and the preservation of himself and Jane, thankfully resisting the urge to peek out at the creature as it turned and walked away. Just what kind of city was this?
ooc: Excuse all the trying to sound smart stuff. Looked up Opar for this thread and apparently in the Burroghs books it was an Atlantean colony, so thought I should try to add that.

The woman glanced down to the mouse, nodding at his words.
"Of course," she said, letting him get a bit in front of her before she followed. After all, he couldn't cover nearly as much ground as she could in the span of a few seconds.
Which made her wonder how he fared in such a large world. He seemed to be capable enough, but surely there were things that he simply couldn't do. Jane had had to help with the pages on her daddy's book, after all, but if a mouse could wear clothing and speak, they probably had versions of the books that humans did.
At least, that's what she thought. But in that case, how did the mice write the books? Did one mouse simply read other books and then transcribe them into books that were size-appropriate?
It was at that point that Jane realized that she was puzzling out entirely the wrong subject. She and Basil had travelled all this way to investigate Opar, whether it was fact or merely fiction.
So far, it was appearing to be more fact than fiction, but they hadn't had a chance to fully investigate quite yet.
Basil's observations about the city intrigued Jane.
"I don't think I've heard anything like that, no," she told him, titling her head at the city. It certainly was unlike anything she'd ever seen before. "Though it wouldn't surprise me; the jungle is full of surprises."
She was about to step closer to get a better look at .... well, everything when Basil told her to take cover.
Jane did as the mouse suggested, feeling somewhat wary of the strange city.
And it was a good thing she'd listened to Basil; a leopard.....that walked like a man stalked by, obviously the guard.
"Goodness!" Jane exclaimed, staring. "They're ... leopard-men!"

"Yes, Leopard men. Men that look like leopards. Leopards walking like men. Certainly explains those clawmarks." Basil tugged at his collar. "Is it getting babbling in here?"
In his head the detective assumed he was managing to cover up his fear at the situation. Cats were bad enough when they weren't standing upright and owning their own cities. Peeking around the corner at the passing sentry Basil noted the light clothing the creature was wearing, greaves and armbands, along with a red cloth sash around the waist and another cloth as a head covering, with a few items hanging from a belt. Including, most interesting of all, a set of keys. The mouse removed his backpack, readying himself for a stealthy approach. If something was worth locking up it was worth investigating. His own fears would have to be pushed aside until he found out what these Jewels of Opar were and what they meant for the safety of England.
"Miss Porter. If something should happen to go wrong I beg of you to go straight home with the utmost urgency and forget we ever came here."
As the guard passed again Basil sneaked after him, keeping under the tufts of grass peeking through the stonework. The guard stopped occasionally, sniffing the air around him. The mouse slowed his approach and climbed up a small pile of rubble near the guard, carefully snagging the key as the leopard man turned back on his route. Once the way was clear Basil returned to Jane, letting out the breath he was holding in for most of the excursion. The guard seemed intent on sticking to his patrol so hopefully the keys wouldn't be missed, perhaps on the way back they could just leave them nearby and let the leopard assume he'd dropped them. It wasn't as if they were here to steal from them.
"Well...I think." He paused to gasp as the severity of what he'd just done hit him. "I think we'd be better off avoiding the locals and finding what these unlock."

It was obvious to Jane that the mouse detective was, understandably, rather frightened of these leopard-men. She wasn't exactly fearless, herself. Leopards could be bad enough by themselves, they'd killed Tarzan's human parents, after all, but if they had the intelligence of humans, as well as the ability to walk upright......the jungle was doomed.
Jane was a bit surprised that the leopard-men were remaining inside the walls of the city; shouldn't they have ventured forth by now to conquer the rest of the jungle, the way that most humans would do?
Oh, not to say that she wasn't glad that they hadn't; Miss Porter was quite pleased to see that the leopard-men had stayed in their city. There was no telling what they would do to the jungle, if they decided to venture forth.
"Are you sure that's wise?" she asked Basil, voice barely above a whisper. "After all, we don't know....anything about this city or its inhabitants. Well, except that they're leopard-men!" she repeated, hoping that her own fear didn't show through her voice.
More than ever, Jane wished that she had waited for Tarzan before heading off on this quest to find the "city of Opar."
"Maybe we should go find Tarzan and then investigate," she added, hoping that Basil would listen to her suggestion. If not, she wasn't about to leave him here, in the hands....paws of these leopard-men.

Basil looked between Jane and the key he was holding. Here he was in a lost city populated by an unknown species and civilisation, ready to crack open a mystery that potentially threatened at least one of the Isles and he was being told it was too dangerous to go any further. Reluctantly he actually agreed, letting out a little noise of frustration that he would deny up and down was a squeak.
"You're right Miss Porter. Far to dangerous to bring a civilian anywhere near these... large cats."
He made a poor show of saving face. This was only his second major case involving human affairs and he wasn't too proud of himself for having to retreat.
First off he pulled the map from his pocket, marking down the location of the city now that they'd located it properly. Once they returned to a safe location he could plan a return trip with better resources now that he knew of the Leopard Men, perhaps this Tarzan person Jane had mentioned a few times, he sounded a physically powerful individual. Finishing up he rolled the map back up and peeked around the corner, checking for more guards before turning to address Jane.
"Righto, let's just go back the way we came and.."
"Grrrrrrrrr."
Basil looked back, then upwards, then upwards some more to see the scowling face of a leopard guard glaring back. Not at Basil though, the guard passed over the smaller intruder and devoted his attention to Jane. Apparently he took less time than hoped to notice his key was missing. Despite the heart thumping terror building up in him Basil drew his knife from his belt, intending to protect his current assistant.
"Hold beast. This young lady is under my protection. If you wish to harm her you'll have to answer to me."
The brave stand didn't last too long as the Leopard knelt down and swiped the detective up in one paw, before throwing him whole into his mouth and swallowing. He returned his attention to Jane before hiccuping as a bulge started pushing in his cheeks followed by a muffled voice. In confusion the Leopard man rolled his tongue around trying to chase the reluctant morsel.
"I'll hold him here Miss Port-Oh dear lord you would not believe what it's like in here!"

For a moment, Jane couldn't do anything but stare at the leopard-man scooped the Detective into his mouth and proceeded to swallow.
When she fully realized what had happened, Jane screamed. But unlike her initial encounter with the baboons in the jungle, she wasn't powerless, this time. Looking around, the Englishwoman snatched up a hefty fallen branch, made sure she was gripping it tightly enough so that she wouldn't lose her grip, and hit the leopard-man on top of the head.
She had been prepared to keep beating him about the face when a Basil-sized bulge appeared in the creature's mouth.
Well, she couldn't keep hitting him in that area or she ran the risk of accidentally injuring or possibly killing Basil!
Instead, Jane changed tactics only slightly, using her branch to pummel the leopard-man around the shoulders and chest area.
"You let him go, right this instant!" she demanded, hitting the creature once more with her chosen weapon.

The Leopard struggled between Janes attack from outside and Basils more annoying attack from inside, not sure what to focus on. Eventually a branch hit to the stomach caused him to start choking on his intended meal and dropping to the ground, face down and unconscious. After a bit more struggling the detective managed to extract himself. Covered in drool and very bedraggled.
"Well that was...an experience. We should probably leave. He's in the recovery position, should be fine."
Unfortunatly the commotion had attracted greater attention. Several more Leopard Guards dropped from the nearby structures and surrounded the duo, pointing their staffs blade inwards. Basil, not fully recovered, put his fists up in an attempt at defiance before he was snatched up and thrown into a cloth bag. Two of the other Leopardmen seized Jane by the arms and picked her up, scowling to show their thoughts on potential resistance. The two intruders were carried through the city, across a narrow bridge over a waterfall and towards a temple, the path towards the entrance lined with lit torches. Basil struggled inside the pouch and shouted muffled protests, his captor occasionally shaking him when he got too troublesome.
Inside the temple the group walked up to a slab like altar, tilted at a forty five degree angle. Jane was placed up first and shackled down, then Basil followed. The guards stood confused for a second with how to restrain him, the manacles being human sized. Eventually they ended up locking a wrist restraint around his small form, then one of the stronger leopards squeezing it until it made a better fit. The mouse glared at them before they marched off elsewhere, apparently having preparations to make.
"Well. I didn't think I'd meet my end on a sacrificial altar in a city of sentient felines. Had nightmares about it when I was younger but..." Basils ears dropped in shame at getting an innocent caught in the situation. "I'm sorry I got you mixed up in this, for what it's worth. and, I want to thank you for saving me earlier, especially after how difficult I was."
The detective looked around, trying to find anything useful. His attention was drawn to a tapestry running along the walls. Showing a white haired female figure holding a gem like object overhead. The illustrations following showed the white haired lady raising a city from the jungle. After that she was holding a sceptre over a group of leopards who, in stages, were portrayed standing upright and becoming the Leopard men currently running around the city. Basil tried to distract Jane from the situation by encouraging her scientific side.

Jane screamed as both she and Basil were caught up by the Leopard-men. She struggled against her captors, but at a particularly ferocious growl and the threat of claws making contact with flesh were enough to calm her resistance.
It was futile, anyway; there were two Leopard-men holding her, and she didn't have the strength to get free of them. She hadn't been raised to be a physically strong woman, though her time in the jungle had helped in that area.
As the captives were marched through the city of Opar (for what else could this place be, really?), Jane couldn't help her fascination. How had they never come across this place, in the time she and Daddy had been living in the jungle? Come to that, how had Tarzan and the gorilla tribe never found this place? It wasn't exactly small, after all.
She probably should have been paying more attention to the path on which they'd been taken to the temple; if they ever intended to make it out again, they'd have to find their way out first, in this maze of a city. Which was certainly easier said than done. And in order to get out, they'd have to escape, first, which was looking less and less likely, as they were taken deeper into the city.
Even as Jane was still looking around, they were taken to what appeared to be a temple. At least, that's what Jane thought it was, considering the outside appearance as well as the altar inside. The altar for which the Leopard-men were heading, with the prisoners.
Before Jane could say so much as one word of protest, she and Basil were strapped down (with some extra thought as to how they could hold Basil) onto the altar. Well, this was rather less than hospitable, that was certain. Clearly, these Leopard-men didn't like people trespassing!
Experimentally, Jane pulled at the restraints, wincing when they bit into her skin. She certainly shouldn't try that again; it wouldn't do anything but injure her further.
She was starting to panic when Basil called her attention to the tapestry along the wall. The young woman looked around, finding the spot that the mouse had indicated, looking it over critically.
"Goodness!" she exclaimed, eyes wide. "It appears as though these Leopard-men.....are really just leopards! That woman, whoever she is, took them from the jungle for her own selfish uses!"
((OOC: Since no one has La, I'm pretty sure we can NPC her if we need to, but I'll double-check, in case we want to toss her into the thread. ^^ As always, let me know if anything needs to be changed!))

Basil was somewhat relieved that Jane didn't acknowledge his apology, probably due to the more urgent situation, but he really didn't like showing vulnerability. Of course vulnerability was a given at this point. The detective struggled in his bonds trying to find an opening. Unfortunatly the leopards had jammed him in pretty well, if he could just get his tail out he could have a go at the latch on his companions wrist manacle. Jane just finished her commentary on the tapestry when another voice from the temple entrance cut in.
"Selfish? As oppossed to letting them waste their time running around the jungle doing nothing useful?"
The guards returned with a young woman in their midst. She was dressed in a short black outfit with a matching cloak. Gold jewelry decorated her neck, wrists, ankles and ears, while she carried a leopard headed staff. Her tanned skin was contrasted with her white hair and bright green eyes, which had a feline narrowness to them. The leopardmen around her bowed as she walked up to the altar. Clearly she was in charge. The detective noted details in her stance and movements, she was someone who loved attention bad or good, didn't do much for herself but was still formidable and had an experienced look not fitting with her age.
"I am Queen La. and you two are intruding on my domain. I'd like to know why."
"and I'd like us both to be released before submitting to any kind of inquisition."
La laughed at Basils misplaced bravado as one of the guards handed her a spherical red jewel, which she inserted into the open mouth of her staff. As she pointed it towards the mouse it glowed, focusing a wide beam of intense red light over him. Suddenly his expression went blank and his eyelids dropped.
"Be polite, you're in the presence of royalty. Now who are you?"
"Basil of Baker Street." Basil answered in a drowsy monotone. "Detective and agent of the crown."
The staff was lowered leaving the detective shaking his head to clear the fog. La patted his head mockingly as she held the staff in view.
"One of my many talents. It keeps my leopards in line, along with anyone else who thinks they can stand against me. I'm told that those under the effect don't know or remember what they do, not unlike sleepwalking, but where is the fun in that?" She activated the staff again, this time with a dimmer light. "This way you're fully aware who is in charge. Your mind is yours but your actions are mine so I could tell you to...wiggle your ears?"
Basil gritted his teeth trying to resist, all for nothing as his ears wiggled around beyond his control. His face burned red through his fur. In a way this was actually worse than her previous demonstration, being fully aware that he was a puppet to whatever dance she suggested. The Queen laughed at his helplessnes, holding her free arm out to signal a leopard guard to hand her a drink, which was quickly poured into a goblet and placed into her hand.
"Okay, you've had your fun. Now stop it."
"Aww, don't be like that." She patted his head again, apparently not having anywhere near all her fun yet. "Everyone else is happy to serve."
"I very much doubt it."
"Why wouldn't they? They'll feel how I tell them." La turned the staff on Jane next, activating it on the lower setting and attempting to take control of her. The Queen tried a few one word commands to test her power, hoping she could have as much enjoyment as she had from her display on Basil.
"Be afraid, cry, sneeze, laugh, sing." She laughed again, more sinister this time. "Any requests little detective? I could make her dance until she collapses, run the length of the jungle without stopping, dive off a cliff."
"Leave her alone!" Basil shouted, snapping La out of her playful mood. "Don't think I'm going to sit here and let an innocent be manipulated by a spoiled brat clearly old enough to know better! Now if you don't release us both right now.."
"I tire of you little rodent, be silent."
Another wave of the staff and Basil was suddenly a lot less likely to anger La with insults and ultimatums. Not for lack of trying though, the detective continued to rant and rave but nothing came out of his mouth. After a few seconds of perfectly silent shouting he caught on and got back to glaring daggers. Mentally he tried to put together how she was performing these displays, because he certainly wasn't going to accept 'magic powers from the lost jungle city'. La turned to Jane, twirling her staff to show that it was still an option.
"You look a little more well mannered than your friend." She took a sip from her drink and upended the remainder over Basils head, letting him cough and splutter in muteness. "Care to talk?"
ooc: Thought you'd want to share in the villain monologuing, do it better than I did XD. I'll edit if things need changed or we need a new NPC. Feel free to indulge in more Basil abuse, I certainly needed it after today.

The young woman watched in horror as another woman (a quite beautiful woman, if she was being honest) stepped inside the temple. It wasn't her presence that was the horrific thing; it was the fact that she appeared to be the woman from the tapestry. Which meant that she was the one controlling the defenseless leopards.
If there was one thing Jane had had reinforced in her time in the jungle, something she'd already considered, but that Tarzan had simply reiterated, it was that the animals of the jungle needed to be able to be what they were without humans interfering. This La person, as she called herself, clearly didn't seem to share that sentiment or understand it. If she had, she wouldn't ever have considered making the leopards do her bidding.
Jane could do nothing but watch as La turned her staff on Basil, controlling him.
"Stop it!" she cried, to no avail. It was almost as though La didn't even hear her, she was so busy torturing Basil. And she was having fun, too. What could this woman possibly get out of controlling poor, helpless creatures? Not that Basil was helpless, but he was much smaller than the Leopard-men La controlled, which meant that if they hadn't had a chance, well, then Basil had even less of a chance of escaping La's powers.
As the so-called "Queen" turned her staff towards Jane, the woman shut her eyes, hoping that that would actually allow her to escape La's control.
Unfortunately, the staff appeared to work more on brainwaves than it did eye-contact. Which resulted in Jane blindly following whatever orders La gave her, whether or not she wanted to.
Basil's gallant words didn't go unnoticed; they clearly annoyed La enough to drive her to silence Basil.
"What did you do to him?" Jane asked, instead of responding to La's question. "What do you want from us?" She couldn't exactly offer money or anything like that; she and Tarzan and Daddy lived very simply; they didn't even have that many material possessions. Jane hoped that La would simply tire of them and let them go, though she knew that that was, unfortunately, unlikely.
((OOC: I'll let you do the villain monologuing, at least this time; you're doing ever so much better than I could! <3))

"I think your little pet is more tolerable when he doesn't speak without permission don't you?" La responded to Janes concern. "Maybe I'll fix it when he learns some respect...maybe."
While the Queen was focusing the conversation on Jane, Basil got to work plotting an escape. The drink he'd be doused with had given him some wiggle room in his bonds, letting him slip his tail free. Testing his limits he found that he couldn't manipulate the latch on his shackle, but could easily free Janes wrist. He decided to hold off for now though, since it wouldn't help to let Jane get one arm free and let her get overwhelmed by the guards.
"What do I want, what do I want?" La mused playfully, pinching Janes nose to reinforce her control of the situation. "Funny how someone in your position thinks she can demand things. What I want Miss..." She turned the staff on Basil again. "Her name?"
"Jane...Porter." Basil reluctantly replied, she insited on letting him know that he was being forced into betraying another.
"Miss Jane Porter. Is to find out why you two are trespassing in my city?" She used the staff again. "Oh wait, I'll ask your pet."
"Jewels..from your city. In London. Would you stop doing th.." Basil was cut off again as La muted him once more.
"Oh you're from London. Dull place so I've heard. If you really must know I let some of my special Opar Jewels travel around to some interested parties. There are people in the other Isles and Kingdoms that appreciate powerful magic like mine."
Basil noted everything she was saying. Seems the Opar Jewels like the one in her staff were a powerful resource among the forces of darkness. Just the thing to give returning villains a boost while they reclaimed their own influence. Naturally a spoiled brat like La didn't seem too concerned with what damage she could cause around the Isles, just as long as she could enjoy what her own misused power could bring.
"But you two don't need to worry. I need to unwind after taking so much abuse from your pet rodent, so I'm going to take some me time and think of a suitable sentence for you both. While I'm gone you can practise your begging and I might consider something lenient, like slavery."
She used the staff to restore Basils voice again, but he decided not to respond and risk changing her mind. La walked to the edge of the steps and turned facing the altar, falling back and letting her Leopard guards rush to catch her. Seemed she didn't want to waste time starting her relaxation.
"My chambers." She instructed. "One of you fools grab a fan. Prepare me something to eat as well. Show your Queen some appreciation."
Her servants carried her out of the temple, leaving the detective and young lady to await whatever fate the Queen decided on. Basil had no intention of waiting for a clearly biased court to make a decision and started flicking at the shackle latch with his tail. It was difficult at first, due to both the awkward angle he was working with and the fact that he was still fuming at the treatment he had gone through. Despite his ego he could be somewhat thin skinned when it came to mockery and humiliation. Even just refering to him as a pet was frustrating when he had no ability, physically or verbally, to respond. Finally he flicked the latch, freeing Janes wrist so that she could work with the rest of her bindings.
"I think we've spent long enough as a captive audience Miss Porter. I hope that.." He shuddered at the lingering feeling of having his free will overridden, trying to keep a brave face despite taking most of the abuse. "..that ordeal didn't cause you too much discomfort."
ooc: Sorry, muting Basil messed with this post a bit and XD Thanks. Want to see you playing evil at some point though.

Jane could only stare, dumbfounded, at the other woman as she continued her rantings. That was the only way Jane could think to describe the way La was speaking: she was ranting. She was ranting about the leopards and about how she'd lent her jewels to museums, about anything and everything.
She couldn't even protest when La called Basil a pet. Jane was paying attention to what the woman was saying (Lord knows why), trying to work at her shackles at the same time, without the woman noticing.
But as La paid more attention to Jane, the Englishwoman stilled her movements, trying to look as though she was quite invested in what La was saying. When the so-called queen insulted London, the city from which both she and Basil hailed, Jane opened her mouth to protest, only for La to continue speaking, as though nothing else in the world mattered but the sound of her own voice.
And to someone like Queen La, that was very probably the case. Certainly, these leopard-men didn't matter to her. Nor did the lives of two innocents who had decided to see if a legend was truth and had stumbled across this hidden city.
Jane was quite glad when La retired, she could start working at her bonds again. They had to get out of here. If they didn't, Tarzan would come looking for them and La would capture him and Jane would never forgive herself if Tarzan got hurt because of her.
She was pulled out of her melancholy thoughts by the way that Basil managed to free the wrist that was closet to him.
As he spoke, she shook her head with a smile, "Oh, no, not at all, my dear detective. But do let's escape while that horrible woman isn't here!" So saying, she reached over to try to free Basil, but the angle was so unfortunately awkward that she couldn't manage anything.
"Give me just a moment, Basil, and I'll have you out of there," she promised, working herself free of her other shackles, now that she had a hand.
The young woman jumped down from where she'd been bound, turning her attention to Basil's restraints. "Oh, this is going to be harder than I'd thought," she fretted, having forgotten that one of the leopard-men had squeezed the shackle to Basil's size.

Basil suddenly caught on to why he couldn't get his bonds loose. The guard crushing it to fit his size must have jammed the latch permenantly, most frustrating. Naturally he didn't expect Jane to drag a stone slab out of the city, that was just impractical and would ruin any chance at stealth. Too bad the leopard who tried to eat him had swallowed his backpack, so many tools packed in there. The detective scanned the room looking for useful items. The tapestries, though informative were next to useless. Wall mounted torches, well he didn't want to try burning himself free, but they did have good long pole handles.
"Remember Archimedes Miss Porter." He indicated with his tail. "Give me a lever and a place to stand and I shall move the earth."
Briefly Basil wondered if Jane had already figured that out and was just enjoying the fact that the mouse needed her help after his initial reluctance to have her come on the investigation in the first place. Not likely that she'd hold a grudge but he did hate being proved wrong. In any case he decided to make amends in case she brought it up first. Or at least do it properly this time rather than when she was distracted with other things.
"I was wrrrr-less than accurate Mrs Porter. If I'd have came here along I'd have likely perished already. Or at least I'd still be miles away from getting here." He looked in the other direction and let his ears drop. "I've just been so out of my element here. I'm a urban creature...well, I suppose we're both urban but you've made the transition better. So, thank you."
He'd felt sort of better and sort of worse getting that out. Back before Rohandor he could handle any case thrown his way but now he had to deal with magic and sundry other unknown elements. On the plus side at least his allies managed to balance things out where he was lacking. Back on the bad side, he was lacking. Perhaps thwarting some wrongdoing would fix things.
"La said she was producing these jewels as a resource provided to other villains. If her stockpiles were damaged in some way it could help matters elsewhere until she can replenish. I don't suppose you're feeling as vengeful as I am?"
