Getting used to fairy tale life was not as easy as 'bibbidi bobbidi boo'. The main mode of transportation in this world was a horse, their idea of running water was a quick-moving stream, and apparently, women weren't supposed to wear pants. (Oh, it would be a while before the women in the court looked at her like she wasn't some sort of foreign species.)
But perhaps the hardest thing to get used to was the ridiculous idea that all females were damsels-in-distress. So far this week she'd had a troll, two bandits, and now this loon trying to kidnap her as bait to lure out Prince Edward.
Setting her hand on her hips slowly, Nancy narrowed her eyes at the latest man who burst into her bedroom through the window, all the while growling out a generic threat. A threat which made the newly crowned princess laugh. Judging from the expression on her 'kidnapper,' she could tell that wasn't his hoped for reaction.
"You have got to be kidding me." Nancy exhaled with a laugh, running her fingers through thick waves of hair a moment, "Look, I really don't have time for this, but if you want to come back in about...two days, I'm sure we can do the whole 'screaming damsel' thing." Again, the man's face said it all; That answer wouldn't suffice.
With several 'threatening' steps forward, the comically-villainous man made it very clear he was unrelenting. Huffing out a breath, Nancy pointed her finger at the man, "You do not want to get into this with me, not today. I have twenty minutes, give or take, to get ready for a ball. That means corset, hoop skirt, high heels, a dress over top of all that before I even get into my hair and jewellery. I don't have time to pretend to be afraid of you today."
Her intruder pulled a dagger from his belt, growling out a low, "Don't make me use this, princess. Nobody has to get hurt." "Ooh, a small knife." Clapping her hands together, the New Yorker advanced on the man, head cocked to the side as she spoke, "Alright, I'm going to level with you; I'm not from Andalasia. I don't know how women are supposed to act here. But back where I'm from, if you pull a knife like that on a lady, she's going to laugh in your face. I've seen scarier men taking the subway home on Friday night."
Watching the man hesitate, Nancy continued to approach him, her voice only growing louder as her rant continued, "I walked through the Bronx when the Yankees lost the World Series, and more recently, I watched a dragon drag off my ex-boyfriend. And you honestly have the nerve to climb in through my window, point your little dagger at me, call me a princess, and expect me to, what, scream and cry and beg for help? I don't think so!"
It wasn't until his back hit the wall that Nancy realized she'd backed him all the way across the room, just in time for her bedroom doors to burst open, her personal prince charming throwing himself into the fray.

Though he didn't like to admit it (and probably wouldn't show it in front of anyone but Nancy), Edward was a bit nervous about this ball tonight. It was one of the first formal functions at Court since he and Nancy had married, and the people were still getting used to the idea of Edward and his new bride on the throne.
Of course, they were thrilled with the romance of their love story, but they weren't quite sure about this ... strange woman, who preferred pants to gowns and had never been on a horse before.
Edward just knew that she was going to win them over, the way that she had practically swept him off his feet, the very moment they met.
But it was getting very close to the start of the ball and Nancy hadn't yet made an appearance. And what with the other occurrences this week, the attempted kidnappings that had necessitated postponing the ball until tonight, Edward was getting worried.
Waving off the many servants that were trying to do things for him, Edward made sure he had his trusty sword and made his way to the bedchamber that he and Nancy shared.
He was about to knock on the door when he heard the raised voice within.
Edward knew that Nancy was perfectly capable of taking care of herself; it was one of the things he so loved about her, but that didn't mean that he was going to stand idly by while some lunatic threatened his beloved!
Drawing his sword, he burst into the room, glancing around frantically for the despicable peasant who dared to besmirch his bridal chamber.
"Vile creature!" he exclaimed, advancing upon the man, sword drawn. "How dare you raise a blade against my beloved Nancy!" Holding the vile being at swordpoint, Edward declared, "You shall pay for your crimes. Any last words?"
Now, growing up, Nancy had never had anyone jumping in front of the creeps she would run into on the street for her. It was still taking some time and effort for her to allow Edward to be her knight with shining teeth. She was her own knight. She had everything under control. She...
...needed to remind herself that Edward, living in his fairy tale life, had been raised to rescue damsels. It didn't mean he thought she couldn't take care of herself. It meant, simply, that he wanted to take care of her.
Quickly side-stepping away from her would-be kidnapper as her valiant Prince dashed across the room with sword in hand, she took a moment to frown at herself. Edward wasn't the sort of guy to ever speak down of her abilities. He just loved being there for her. And truth be told, he had come in at a frighteningly convenient time. Either she had been making a lot more noise than she had thought, or the bandit had achieved his goal of making her late. Either way, this entire thing was not making her week go by any better.
Once Edward had pushed his way between Nancy and her terrified intruder, the Queen gently rested her hand over her husband's shoulder with a laugh, "I don't know if he has any last requests, but I'd like to make one? Maybe...no bloodshed in the bedroom? Just a thought."
Moving to circle Edward and actually finish preparing for the ball which she was now certain they would be late for, when the bandit seemed to find his confidence. In a swift motion, he pushed out of the corner he'd been backed into, grabbed Nancy by the waist and held his little dagger to her throat.
"...you have got to be kidding me...!"

Edward was focused on the villain in front of him, but he was instantly aware of Nancy's touch as she rested a hand on his shoulder. He was always very conscious of where Nancy was: because she was the woman he loved and simply because she was a woman.
He was, after all, still getting used to having women around the Court. For the longest time, Narissa had made sure that Edward only interacted with men, which was what he was used to. Though, he had to admit, he vastly preferred a mixed Court; everyone seemed to be .... more relaxed.
Turning his head slightly so that he could flash a smile at his wife, he said, "Of course, my love!"
The royal was about to threaten the would-be abductor onto the balcony (that was outside the bedroom, though it was technically an extension of it, right?) when the fiend lunged out of the corner, grabbing Nancy once more.
This time, he held the dagger to her throat, making the blade a much more present threat than it had been before.
"Put it down or she dies," the still frightened villain growled.
Edward instantly dropped his sword, having formulated another plan.
"Please, don't hurt her," he said, taking several steps forward.
In an attempt to seem braver than he felt, the attacker stayed where he was rather than moving as Edward moved.
"Give me what I want and I'll let her go," he said, accidentally allowing his knife-hand to drop slightly.
"Anything you want; please, just let my wife go," Edward said, a pleading tone in his voice.
"....How do I know you'll keep your word?" the foul villain asked, suspiciously.
Without warning, Edward covered the few remaining steps between them and punched the fiend in the face, surprising and injuring him enough that he dropped his blade.
Edward winced, shaking out his hand, but turned, smiling triumphantly to his wife.
"Looks like I learned something in your New York after all!"
The Queen was careful to stay very, very still, the cool metal against her throat more than enough incentive to hold her breath. Now, she was used to men waving their knives around, shouting threats and whatnot, but she'd never found herself quite in this position.
Two years of women's self defence classes would've paid off here, but she found herself stuck still. Had she been in her usual shoes and jeans, perhaps she would've made an attempt at freeing herself. But in a corset and dressing gown? She knew better than to even think of trying that.
Instead, she was stuck listening, shocked, as Edward dropped his sword and bargained with the man. Now, that wasn't quite right. No, Edward was the sort to valiantly battle for honour, not the sort to back away from a fight, especially not from a fight with a rat like this!
"Anything you want; please, just let my wife go." So that's what it was. Her dirty little kidnapper had found the King's weakness; and of course, it was her. Nancy released a shuddered breath, turning her face away from her attacker to avoid the stench of his breath, when Edward's hand sped past her and into the assailants ugly mug.
In the moment of shock, the man dropped the dagger to the floor, releasing his prey long enough for her to jump out of his grasp and over to her Prince. Shortly afterwards, he dropped to the ground himself, clutching at his presumably broken nose.
"Uh, yeah! I would say so! That was...unexpected. Unorthodox. And effective!" With an awkward grin, Nancy ran a hand through her hair and glanced backward at the intruder, "Now I still need to get ready, deal with this fool... Are we ever going to hold a party where I'm not...at least an hour late?"
Now that the foul villain was not threatening his beloved Nancy with a knife to her throat, Edward picked up his sword, pointing it at the man.
"Stay down, peasant," Edward warned him, an undertone of deadly seriousness in his voice. The newly crowned King of Andalasia was usually a rather light-hearted fellow, but this sort of thing had to be taken quite soberly. This wasn't the first time they'd had to deal with a vile man like this, creatures who thought they could get away with the highest of treasons.
The man clutched at his nose and nodded, too stunned and in pain to do anything other than follow orders.
Edward smiled at his beautiful wife, leaning into steal a kiss.
"I can deal with this foul villain," he said, shooting a glare at the man on the floor. "I shall see to it that he receives the gravest punishment for this offence." After all, threatening the Queen of Andalasia was High Treason and deserved a punishment as grave as the crime.
Edward did not like having to hand out execution orders, but he was more concerned with making sure that Nancy was safe. If carrying out the punishment for treason was that price, he was more than willing to pay it.
His expression had turned somber at his thoughts, but at Nancy's mention of being late, Edward smiled again, glad that he could allay at least one of her worries.
"No need to worry about being late, my love! We are the King and Queen; everyone else is simply early."
A blissful smile passed over Nancy's face as Edward broke away from the chaste kiss, taking a moment to remember exactly what was going on.
Right. Death threats. Not the time to get romantic.
As the King returned his attention to the intruder, she noted the darkening tones in his voice. The gravest punishment, she noted, in Andalasia was just as dark as it sounded. Before Edward and Nancy had become the rulers, it seemed that Narissa handed them out frequently.
Death in a fairytale just felt...wrong, somehow. "Edward..." She began carefully, balancing her words while watching the snivelling little man who had invaded her bedroom so boldly only minutes before, "He hardly did enough to...warrant a death sentence. I mean, I had him under control, you had him under control... Don't you think we could just..."
With less worry of the party in mind, Nancy exhaled quickly and held out her hands to Edward, "C'mon...if you do this, you'll just be moping all night..."
Edward smiled at Nancy's response to his kiss. No matter the situation, they managed to bring a smile to each other's faces. If he had ever had any doubts about whether or not Nancy was his True Love, the way that she made him smile, even when she was simply gazing out the window, the way they made each other feel would have erased any such thoughts.
He would have loved to agree to Nancy's request immediately, but the idea that Narissa could send someone like this to try to kill Nancy was all too present. She would probably expect them to do exactly what Nancy was suggesting. And then, when their guard was down, when they were relaxing in the idea that the threat had been dealt with, something would happen. For all they knew, this foul villain could be Narissa in disguise. That he'd thought of such a ruse showed that Edward was learning.
With a sigh, the King shook his head.
"I'm afraid we can't spare him, my love," he said, his tone quite serious, something that was fairly uncommon for Edward. "That would be what Narissa expects. And he could even be moth--Narissa in disguise!"
At times, it was still difficult for the former Prince to consider that the only mother he'd ever really known .... was evil.
But he knew, now, thanks in part to visiting Nancy's "New York" that not everyone could be trusted to simply do what Edward expected them to do.
However, his Nancy did have a point: he wouldn't be in a festive mood if they carried out the edict before the party.
He turned to the guards that had appeared, as swiftly and silently as spectres at their King's side.
"Take this foul villain to the dungeon until he can be dealt with properly," King Edward commanded. "And see that he's kept under guard."
The armored men bowed and hauled the miserable would-be assassin to his feet, practically carrying him out of the Queen's rooms.
"Now, my love, would you rather postpone the ball?" Edward asked his wife, "Or would you like to continue today as planned?" As far as he was concerned, the party could be held whenever his Nancy wished it. And he wouldn't blame her if she wanted to change it to later.
Nancy held her breath for a long while, before her husband gave in and had the intruder sent to the dungeons. While she may have been a bit of a hard ass back home, she couldn't help but feel it was an out-of-place behaviour in such a magical place as Andalasia. Some times, it was hard for her to remember that she really was in control. It felt like a movie playing out.
Like a storybook.
Shaking the thoughts away, Nancy's grin returned as she saw the worried look washing over Edward's face. With a laugh, she gestured over herself, "Postpone the ball? After I'm already half-way ready? It'll take me less time to finish readying than it will to get my hair out of all these curls. Besides..."
She had to remind herself that this was the life Edward had grown up in. He was royalty, and she would learn to be. For him.
"What would it look like if the reigning pair postpone a party in their honour again?"
Edward would have offered to help Nancy finish getting ready, but he really knew nothing about women's fashions. Especially since Nancy generally had her own sense of fashion, one that seemed to mix her own home into the styles of Andalasia.
He really was hopeless when it came to things outside of fighting trolls. Which he needed not to be, if he was going to be a good King.
Right now, he was so new, and after a ruler like Narissa, that the people practically didn't care what he did so long as he didn't execute them or throw random magic at them. And while he could do the former, if he felt so inclined, he didn't even have any magic, to throw or keep.
Edward smiled at Nancy and pulled her hand to his lips for a kiss.
"They would say 'that royal couple is so very much in love and the reason that they're late is because they're enjoying each other's company,'" Edward said with a laugh. "Or, knowing the guards, word will have already spread about the foul villain and they will cheer that we are unharmed."
Either way, the fact that they were "late" wouldn't be so horrible. Narissa frequently hadn't shown up to balls, or so Edward had heard. He hadn't exactly attended any before meeting Giselle.
Flashing his Queen another smile, Edward asked, "Is there anything I can do to help, my love, or would I be more of a hindrance, at this point?"
Even though he didn't know anything about women's clothes, he felt that he should learn. Just in case. And, after all, if they had children, someday, he would have to know for them.

Nancy could see Edward debating what exactly he should do next, before taking her hand in his own, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand. He always treated her like Lady, and it never failed to make her grin like a child.
Withdrawing her hand slowly, she walked to her vanity and slowly ran her fingers through the princess curls that sat at her shoulders, "You know, I have to be honest, Edward...'enjoying each other's company' might mean something a little different when I hear it from when you say it..."
Ignoring her prince's naivety, Nancy returned herself to finishing her make-up, glancing at Edward in the reflection of her mirror.
"Why don't you..." She hesitated a moment, thinking of what she still had left to do, "Oh! Why don't you pick out my dress for the evening. Just nothing too...thick. Augustine was trying to get me to wear a velvet mess that just may 'happen' to disappear in the night..."
Augustine, a worker in the palace who had taken it upon herself to train Nancy in the art of being royalty, really had her work cut out for her.

Even though Edward was a King now and had an entire country to take care of, making Nancy smile was still one of his top priorities. After all, they interacted on a daily basis and if she wasn't happy....he would do just about anything to change that.
His people were important to him, as well, but .... he was still getting used to the whole "King" thing.
A smirk made it's way onto Edward's face as Nancy told him that his words probably meant something different than what she thought they might have.
Putting his hands on her shoulders as she sat at her vanity, Edward bent down to kiss her on the cheek.
"Or that could be exactly what I meant, my love," he said, grinning.
Clearly, though, Nancy still had much to do. Edward was about to leave and let her finish getting ready when Nancy said he should pick out her gown for the evening.
That he could do. Edward had an eye for clothing, though his fashion sense wasn't nearly as developed as Nancy's.
"Right away, my dearest!" he exclaimed, practically zooming to her wardrobe doors and flinging them open.
He went through a few gowns before he came across one that Nancy had designed herself, a gown that he would love to see on her. It was elegant and beautiful, while still retaining Nancy's New York sense of style.
By the time Edward had finished shuffling through Nancy's closets, she had successfully completed her make-up. Turning to see which one the King had picked out, she couldn't help but smile at his choice.
The gown was elegant, appropriate, but without the hellish layers and ruffles that the chambermaids always seemed to lean towards. Standing from her seat, Nancy moved to run her hands over the satin of the skirt, grinning.
"I think it'll be...perfect, Edward." Taking the gown, she held it against herself, looking down to observe, "Yes. Perfect."
Walking to the screen dividing the room, Nancy slipped behind it to strip off the robe she had been wearing, the thin dress underneath following quickly.
While she dressed, Nancy peeked over the screen and grinned in Edward's direction, "In regards to your earlier comment, mister, I don't really think that the people coming to this little gathering want to think about what we do in private. Just saying."
Edward couldn't help but laugh as Nancy took the dress he'd picked and went behind the screen in the middle of the room. They were married now, but apparently, she still felt it necessary to change behind a screen. Then again, she could have done that for his benefit; he was still getting used to the idea of being married and all that came with it. Even if that was the case, he wouldn't change a thing, not for the world.
At Nancy's mention of his earlier comment, Edward grinned, glancing over to the screen where she was currently changing.
"My dearest, you'll find that that's one of their favorite topics of gossip."
That and whether or not Narissa was going to return. They thought that their King didn't know what they talked about, using the playful tone of apparent gossip, but his faithful servants told him what was on the public's mind.
But he refused to think about that sort of thing tonight. They'd already dealt with one intruder tonight; he didn't need one in his mind to ruin this party.
"And we can always add to that, simply by looking at each other," he said with a smirk, walking over to the screen. "Though it doesn't really matter what we do; they'll gossip anyway." Edward had always been a source of gossip; he was used to it, by now.
Nancy's romantic life was the topic of gossip. Hm, it was like high school all over again. With a silent laugh to herself, the woman shook her head and walked out from behind the screen, doing a slow spin for Edward to observe the dress.
"They can gossip all they want," She hummed softly, pulling her hair free from beneath the shoulders of the gown, "If there's one thing I've learned, it's that people talk. Even when you give them nothin' to talk about, they'll find something."
Walking over to the mirror, Nancy experimentally pulled her hair up, making a face at her reflection, "Hm. Hand me a couple of bobby pins, would you...?"
