At Jack’s regretful observation, Sally only gave a soft laugh. At her words, Jack’s small frown transformed into a wide grin that reached his eye sockets. He was quite sure he would enjoy doing just about anything, so long as he was by her side, but cooking together had so far been much more exciting than moving boxes. “So do I but… I’m worried you won’t be very comfortable here tonight if we don’t do at least some of it.” At least her bedroom. He certainly wouldn’t let her sleep on the floor. “Although…” Jack judged the hour, considering the time left in the day. “You can have my room for the night. Zero and I can sleep on the sofa. Or a borrowed coffin.”
When the time came to start making the frosting, Jack plucked the few items he had acquired from the box and put them beside those Sally had arranged at the table. While Sally mixed, Jack carefully measured and poured more ingredients into the bowl until it began to come together. “After all this, I think we owe the Candy Man a batch of cookies.”
The timer gave a little chime and Jack realized that he could smell the cookies now. The scent was not unpleasant to him, though he wasn’t sure anyone outside of Halloween Town would feel the same. It reminded him of the bog south of the pumpkin patch.
Sally followed him to the oven and Jack reached in with his boney hands, heedless of the heat, and pulled out the cookie sheet. “Well, they kept their shape!” They still looked like hats and pumpkins. Jack put the cookie sheet on top of the oven and studied them critically. “I honestly didn’t think they’d look this good on our first try.”
He wanted to eat one, but thought he should probably let them cool first.

Her eyes widened at the proposal that came, then she smiled again. "That's so kind of you to offer, but I really don't need that many things for tonight. I promise! We can get to that after this. Then maybe we can have breakfast together in the morning?" Sally wasn't trying to be ungrateful to Jack's offer to put her up. She just didn't want to be an imposition.
The frosting came along with far less doubt than the cookies they were supposed to be topping. Sally basked in contentedness, having Jack hover around and beside her while they worked. "Of course he does," she agreed with a nod to Jack's mention of repaying the Candy Man.
Once Jack retrieved the cookies, Sally looked down at them, the picture of anxiousness. The sheet was moved to the oven's top for both of the macabre couple to scrutinize. "They look great!" Sally elbowed Jack gently and grinned up on them proudly. Then a thought occurred to her and she reflected. "Now, I wonder how they'll taste?"
The ragdoll returned to her icing escapades while the cookies cooled. Measuring the white icing into various smaller bowls, she handed Jack various dyes and told him to add them to the mixtures drop by drop until the correct shade was met. Once they had a deep black, dark purple, festive orange and base white properly mixed, Sally dusted her hands off on her skirt and addressed the cookies. "I think they should be cool enough now. Care to do the honors?"

Sally assured him that the two of them would easily be able to make her new house accommodating enough after they finished this batch of cookies. Jack had a little doubtful frown on his face, but that gave way to an easy smile when she suggested they meet for breakfast the next morning. Jack nodded his agreement. “If you insist… but the offer still stands, if you change your mind.”
The two of them stood together in the kitchen and Jack again felt nothing but contentedness. Sally nudged him with her elbow and Jack grinned down at her. “The dough is starting to grow on me.” To drive that point home, he reached over with his long arm and stole another little bite from the counter top. “I’m very optimistic about these.” Not bad for a first try. Not bad at all.
Sally went back to mixing up the icing. Jack watched as she measured out icing into different bowls and added the food coloring. When she informed him everything should be ready, Jack turned back to the cookie sheet and carefully picked up two with his boney fingers. He put them down on the counter before the two of them and used a knife to spread orange icing across a pumpkin shaped cookie. He probably could have spent time making a jack-o-lantern face, but he was too excited to bother with that now.
He lifted the cookie. “Cheers!” Popping the cooke into his mouth, he crunched it up with a thoughtful frown on his face, his brow deeply furrowed. Once he swallowed, his expression brightened into one of delighted surprise. “This is… actually very good! I think we’ve done it!”

She was mildly prepared for Jack to turn her own trick back on her and force them to both try the cookies simultaneously. When he didn't, Sally smiled a little wider. Good. She wanted to watch his face while he tried it, and the kind of ambient excitement that was trilling down his bones filled the air while he deftly frosted one and then popped it into his skeletal mouth.
Sally watched, her fondness traded for genuine suspense at Jack's deeply contemplative expression. His furrowed brow smoothed, his pursed mouth widened in a victorious grin. Sally, who had been taking her time to carefully frost her own cookie, bounced slightly on the spot. "Really?" She picked up her work, partly finished, and took a bite.
She chewed, swallowed, then beamed at Jack. "They're wonderful! And on the first try!" Sally fell into him, hugging Jack's thin torso fiercely at their joint success. "Well," she said, screening her mouth, full from a second bite, with one hand, "we have to make more, don't we?"
Sally smoothed out the dough they had left into another vaguely square shape so they could cut more out. "We can start unpacking my things between cutting and frosting. Does that make you feel better?" She smiled teasingly at Jack. She really was grateful that he was always so concerned for her well-being. It was incredibly sweet, and made Sally feel less overbearing when she fretted about him, in turn.

“Yes! I promise, they’re not bad at all.” Of course, both Jack and Sally knew that these cookies were tailored to the vary specific pallet of a Halloween Town Resident. Anyone from another world would probably become quite ill after tasting one, but none of that mattered. These were for each other and their friends.
Sally tried her cookie and quickly discovered that they’d managed to make something unexpectedly wonderful. She hugged him then, without any hesitation or second thought, and that brought the biggest grin to Jack’s face yet. He returned the embrace, laughing fully, and when Sally pulled back to suggest they make more Jack chose another cookie, dunked it in the frosting, and took another bite.
“Of course! There are so many flavors to try. I wonder— do you think frog eggs would hold up on top of these?” Jack’s expression changed then, becoming mischievous, as an idea came to him. “We should leave some out for Sandy Claws this Christmas!” Oh, he was sure Sandy would not enjoy the taste of them, but it was the thought that counted. A harmless prank between friends.
Sally began to roll out more dough and Jack carefully moved the remaining cookies off the cookie sheet so they could use it again. Then he started to grease the pan up with butter. He looked up in time to catch sight of Sally’s teasing smile. If Jack had been a monster with more flesh and blood, he might have blushed.
“Cooking and moving things have become recent hobbies of mine. No-- passions. I think spending the afternoon doing so would make me feel very content indeed.” Jack returned her teasing grin and placed the baking sheet before her.
Zero had drifted closer as the two had been eating and now he looked up at Sally with large expectant eyes. He didn’t really eat food, but he liked to smell things.
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Sally tilted her head at Jack's suggested topping. She was so focused on making a parallel gingerbread cookie, mimicking those that they'd had in Christmas Town, she hadn't even thought of taking it further. Creating their own unique Halloween Town baked goods. "I think they'd add something wonderful. Do you think they'd hold up in the oven, though? Or would we put them on afterward?"
She was still pondering the particulars of Jack's idea when he affected a sly look to him. Sally narrowed her eyes warily at him, but didn't defeat the smile on her lips. When he explained his prank, Sally laughed softly and shook her head. "So long as you're prepared to get coal in your stocking." By that point she had a fair grasp on Christmas traditions.
The ragdoll smiled at Jack's joking answer to her suggested course for the evening. She focused on the task at hand, then frowned thoughtfully. "What do you think of taking these around the town tomorrow? Get some unbiased opinions and spread some Halloween fear?"

They baked far into the night and, though Jack was skeptic, managed to also set up enough of Sally's bedroom things that he allowed her to stay there. The next morning they slept in late to compensate for how much of the night they'd spent creating new kinds of cookies and perfecting their recipes. The thought of breakfast got bumped up to "brunch," and before that, the two decided to hand out their creations.
Sally draped a basked over one arm, laden full to the top with cookies, covered in turn with a threadbare cloth. She opened her boutique door and held it for Jack to follow her out, into the harsh light of the Jack-O-Lantern sun. "I hope people like them," she said idly, shutting and locking the door behind them.

After a bit of work, Jack and Sally managed to get her room put together well enough that she could sleep there comfortably. After all the cookies had been stowed away and the kitchen was tidied up, Jack bit Sally farewell with a kiss. The moon was heavy and low in the sky as the Pumpkin King crossed the wide courtyard to his own mansion, his ghost-dog at his heel, and was so deeply happy he nearly burst into song.
~~~
It was springtime in Halloween Town and, with Halloween still months away, Jack had very little work to do. There was nothing at all to keep him from joining Sally for a late breakfast the following day. After, the two gathered up the cookies and decided to test out their recipes with their neighbors.
Jack followed Sally out into the sun. As always Zero was floating around their feet. The ghost dog looked around, his ears perked forward, looking for one of the cats that Sally had befriended.
“They’ll love them!” Jack was enthusiastic as ever and very optimistic. He led the way to the fountain at the middle of the square and hopped up on the edge of it. He turned gracefully and surveyed the area. There were a few people going here and there as well as a few open windows. People would come.
“Citizens of Halloween Town!” Jack projected his voice grandly, holding himself tall and confident. “My friends! Please, come and sample these new Halloween Treats!” At this he gestured at the basket Sally held and waved a few on-lookers closer. “They’re freshly baked and quite delicious, I assure you.”
Just like always, there wasn't room in Jack's mind for any form of doubt. He was completely convinced that the baked goods they'd made the night before would go over famously with the township. Sally smiled softly at his tall, lean back while Jack strode toward the town square's fountain. Following his example, Sally pushed aside any worry and put optimism in its place as best she could.
The Pumpkin King was so beloved by all that Sally watched many who noticed him leaping onto the fountain's edge take note automatically and slow to a stop on their errands. Then came the voice he used whenever addressing an audience; theatrical, charismatic, but also genuine. Sally stopped in front of the fountain and turned to face the square with Jack at her back. Zero drifted around her ankles.
Sure enough, Jack's proclamation earned immediately more interest than anything that ever was spoken over the Mayor's megaphone. Heads poked out of windows, doorways, sewer grates and shadowed alleys. Sally pulled the cloth covering her basket off to show the sweets layered inside of it. Halloween Town citizens drifted nearer, clotting together in an impromptu crowd.
"There's enough for all of you to have one," Sally said, brightly but also informatively. Her eyes lingered knowingly on Wolfman, whose appetite was a thing of legend. Moving out into the crowd, Sally offered the basket to anyone she met and then. When it was nearly empty, but every mouth was working to sample the things, Sally moved back to the fountain and looked up at Jack encouragingly.
