The ragdoll thought carefully of the things she was particularly good at. That was easy enough, what she struggled with was taking those and finding how they might be used to scare the mortals of Rohandor on October Thirty-First. Jack's voice broke through her puzzled, searching thoughts. He drew attention to her ability to come apart at the seams harmlessly.
Sally's expression lit up while Jack explained that dismemberment was something humans did not like. "I suppose I can understand why," she said idly, but her eyes were thinking and there was a growing hope in her. For humans, who would likely not survive coming apart and being put back together, Sally understood the dislike for it.
Jack spoke again and drew a thoughtful frown from her before another idea struck him. Sally tilted her head, thinking. She didn't know if she'd ever tried, specifically, not to move at all. She did have an innate perk in that area, though: she didn't need to breathe. "Let's see." Sally nimbly slipped off of Jack's lap and strode around the table.
The ragdoll reflected for a moment, thinking of the decorations many mortals put up in their lawns and so forth on Halloween. Adopting a stiff, resting pose with feet more apart than she was used to and arms at her sides, Sally became utterly frozen. Her eyes even turned distant, unfocused and unseeing.
Ten seconds in, Sally came alive again with excitement. "I can move the parts of me that aren't attached! That's sure to be helpful." To demonstrate, she undid one string at her wrist and pulled it apart. Her right hand dropped to the floor, but the fingers tensed and caught it, before crawling over the surface of the stage, this way and that, like some great spider. "Right?"

Sally moved to stand and took a few steps away from him. As he watched, she took care to pose herself and fell completely still. As Jack had suspected, Sally could make herself as lifeless as a real doll, if she chose to. With fluid grace, Jack rose to his feet and took a few steps closer to her, his curious frown becoming a soft grin as he observed her lifeless eyes.
After a few moments Sally dropped the act and promptly demonstrated how some of her body could, if separated, keep moving while the rest of her stayed still. Jack had of course seen Sally’s dismembered limbs move on their own, on such an occasion a seam tore while they were together), but now he was really beginning to see the potential this held for her.
“Excellent!” Jack bent and picked up her dismembered hand, holding it carefully in both of his before offering it back to her. “I think I have an idea. Imagine a group of humans walking along the sidewalk. They come across a body propped up by the wall of an old building, half-lit by a nearby street lamp.” Jack gestured grandly, his voice rising and falling theatrically as he lay his spooky scene. “They come closer, concerned someone is hurt, only to see that this is a halloween decoration— a life-size doll— that someone has left behind. It’s plain to see why, her arm has been torn from her shoulder…”
Jack fell silent and turned his head, looking down at her. He smiled and gestured to her with an open hand.
“Then… at just the right moment… right when they begin to believe there is nothing to fear…”
Now Jack waited to see how Sally would choose to frighten the hypothetical humans he’d brought across her path. Luring them in and getting them to drop their guard was part of the scare. The real payoff came next, when she revealed herself as a monster and sent them screaming.

Sally practically beamed at the pride and approval that she saw in Jack when she began adding to their brainstorming session. She would have clapped, but one of her hands was missing. Jack tenderly captured the rogue body part and held it out for her to reclaim. Sally took it and, snatching a sewing needle from behind one ear and a spool of thread from the pocket on her skirt, deftly began reattaching it.
That's when Jack had an idea. She knew from his tone of voice that something truly spectacular was to follow. He started to speak, and while he did the innate kind of magic that the Pumpkin King had started to work its spell. The ambient light in the room - already sparse - dimmed and the shadows danced and seemed to writhe. Jack's words painted a spooky picture.
Sally drew up next to him, looking out to the space over the seats in the room lined up in front of the stage and seeing clearly the vision he was explaining. She was drawn into the scene, and in its premise Sally felt genuine excitement to try to ply her brand of scares on Halloween... Then Jack opened the floor for her to contribute. Sally panicked for just a second, then wrangled her nerves, because an idea had occurred to her; a natural progression of this eerie situation.
"They..." she began, gaining confidence. "They hear a rustling in the bushes behind them. They huddle together and just build up their courage when the missing arm from the doll drags itself into the lamplight. They scramble backwards to get away, right into the doll itself. Only," Sally smiled knowingly at Jack, "she's not quite as lifeless as they thought."
Sally crept behind Jack. "She grabs one of their shoulders," she said, doing just that to Jack, "leans in, and whispers: boo." Sally delivered the single word in an ominously serene way. Unflavored by emotions, as lifeless as the doll in the scenario they were building together. With their roleplay concluded, the paranormal effects that Jack wrought on their surroundings faded, bringing light back and returning the shadows to lifelessness. "What do you think?" Sally asked, biting her lip.

Sally stepped up beside him, into his spell. He saw a flash of panic on her face, but he knew to wait. The two of them had been together nearly every day since that fateful Christmas, and Jack knew that, while Sally might be slow to trust in herself, she was capable of amazing, surprising things. It had taken Jack time to learn that he must wait for her to find her own footing rather than rush in to try and solve a problem for her, but eventually— starting with the hunt for her own house— he had. Jack waited now, holding his breath, certain he was seeing a genuine Halloween Miracle.
Sally took up his story, her voice clear in the empty auditorium. It echoed into the shadows made deep by Jack’s magic and Jack felt his mouth pull into a wicked Halloween grin when she smiled at him. The detail with the dismembered arm in the lamplight was perfect.
Sally moved behind him and the skeleton remained where he was, his head bowed forward slightly as he closed his eyes. This time he did not hear her footsteps, only her voice, which seemed to come from everywhere in the darkness around them. She grabbed his shoulders, leaned close against him, and whispered against the side of his skull.
If he’d had flesh, it would have crawled. Instead, a delicious shiver ran the length of his spine, leaving him quite lightheaded.
What do you think?
Jack blinked, his vision focusing on Sally’s face. The glamour had faded and the two of them stood together on the stage under the yellow lights. She was looking up at him anxiously, waiting for his feedback, but for once Jack was struck completely speechless.
Jack shook his head as if to clear it and gave a soft laugh. “I think I’m very looking forward to watching you scare this year, Sally.” Jack laughed again, more fully this time, unable to contain just how happy he was. “That was very well done. Inspired! As your scaring instructor I give you perfect marks for the evening."

She watched Jack carefully. He looked dazed, and Sally didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing after her little attempt. Jack's empty sockets focused on her and she tried to not look as anxious as she felt, though whether or not she succeeded was anyone's guess. He laughed, answered her question and Sally's expression brightened.
"Really?" she asked, still a little disbelieving. Sally was sure she had a very long way to go between there and Halloween to scare on par with the other citizens of the town, but this meant that Jack thought she was up to the task! Jack laughed more heartily, happiness oozing from his bones. He went on to praise her, even calling her approach "inspired," and if Sally had had blood, it'd been brightening up her cheeks. "Thank you, Jack."
Sally thought of pointing out that he was probably biased, but somehow that would ruin the moment. Instead, she grinned and gently jabbed Jack's ribs with one finger with an air of warning. "You know what this means, don't you?" she asked. "We'll have to have at least one lesson a day until Halloween. I still have a lot to learn before the Thirty-First."
The ragdoll shrugged her shoulders, as though to emphasize that this was simple logic beyond either of their control. Then contentment and a bit of guile kindled in her eyes while they looked up, half-lidded, at Jack. "Hope you won't get tired of me."

“Yes, of course! You show a great deal of potential! I think we’re really on to something here.” This strategy, of being still and drawing humans close, letting them lower their guard and then giving them a scare… it was something Sally seemed to be made for (literally).
She poked at his side and stated that they must continue her lessons every day until the 31st. Jack grinned wickedly and caught her hand in his before bowing to place a kiss upon her knuckles. “I am honor-bound to assist in any way I can.” Jack spoke earnestly, keeping the same playfully serious tone Sally had adopted. Of course Jack was busy with a thousand things to do, but he would make this work. Besides, it was the perfect excuse to get away from Holiday planning and see her.
Her last comment caught Jack off guard. He began to speak, to fervently deny that he could ever get tired of her, but he caught the look in her eye and realized she was still playing with him.
"Never." Still holding her hand, Jack drew her closer and wrapped his long arms around her. “Not in a thousand Halloweens…” Jack bent his head to seal his vow with a kiss.
