Participating Characters:Sally , Jack Skellington Forum Location: Halloween Town Time of Day: Late Evening Weather: Gray and overcast Thread Location: Town Hall Premise: Jack and Sally prepare for a Wedding
Jack stood on the stage in the town hall before his people. All of them were chatting excitedly, wondering what the emergency town meeting was all about.
“Good evening, everyone!” Jack moved to take his place behind the podium. “I have an announcement to make…” The various ghouls and monsters settled into an eager silence… and Jack began to sing.
He sang about his role as their king and leader. He tried, in his own Jack way, to explain to them what love what. He gestured to Sally, the tone of his voice and the affection in his empty eyes doing more to show the citizens of Halloween Town what he was trying to say than his words ever could. He told them he had chosen her to be his Queen. Then he moved on and explained, as best he could, the wedding ceremony and celebration that followed. By the time the meeting had been called to a close, everyone was excited to throw the biggest party Halloween Town had ever seen. Jack asked everyone to return the following morning to receive their assignments.
Standing on the stage, Jack watched as the last of them filed out, a sad little pout on his face. They had all been much more excited about planning a party than having a new queen, which Jack saw as the most important part. He wanted them to see that it was all much more than just a celebration.
He heaved a deep, dramatic sigh and turned to Sally. “They’re excited… but they don’t understand.” He blinked slowly, his brow furrowing as he felt a very strong sense of deja vu.

While Jack addressed the gathered citizens of Halloween Town, Sally watched from her seat in the front row. She might have, personally, preferred to stick to the edges of the room in these kinds of events, but being there for Jack to see and as an encouraging face was more important. Besides, she supposed she had a large part in the reason for the meeting, itself.
The townsfolk were quieted once everyone was present, and Jack wove a melody that enraptured the audience as much as it confounded them. Sally had expected as much, and continued to smile fondly at Jack while he sang.
His song came to a close, and the meeting with it. The citizens burst into enthusiastic chatter while they spilled from Town Hall into the square beyond. Sally stood and watched them go, hands clasped in front of her, and smiled at those that offered uncertain congratulations. When the last goblin scuttled out and the hall's doors creaked closed, Jack sighed loudly.
Sally had expected that, too.
"They're excited... but they don't understand." The ragdoll mounted the stairs to the stage and looked gently up at him. "Well, then it's just like Christmas, isn't it? They didn't understand that, either. Not until Mr Claws brought it to Halloween Town for the first time." Sally reached up with one hand and cupped Jack's jaw bone.
"It's our job to show them what a wedding is, and what it means. I'm sure they'll understand then." Sally was still trying to understand, really. So was Jack, she thought. "But your song was lovely," she added. And it had been. It'd made Sally even more earnest to pursue this wedding business.
(Four-hundred years later: Grim replied. Don't hate me)

Jack’s spine was bent forward in a defeated posture, arms limp at his side. Sally climbed the short set of stairs to stand before him and Jack bowed his head. Obviously the fault was his own. He could not explain Christmas properly, how could he really convey what a wedding was? Sally echoed his thoughts, lifting her hand to his skull, her touch gentle.
I’m sure they’ll understand then.
Jack’s empty eye sockets focused on her face. She was right, of course. The skeleton lifted his head, his expression brightening just a little with hope. She went on to compliment the song and Jack’s skeleton grin spread across his face. There were a few subjects and feelings that made him burst into song, and Sally was certainly one of them.
“You’re right.” Jack tilted his head into her touch. “I should have anticipated this. Still, I think they’re happy for us.” The townspeople had, for the most part, nodded along as Jack explained about Kings and Queens and how he had chosen Sally. They hadn’t been surprised at all. But then, Jack had clearly chosen her years ago. Maybe it wasn’t such a big change after all.
Jack smiled easily now, taking both her hands in his and standing at his full height. “We have a lot to discuss before tomorrow’s meeting. Do you want to stay here or go back to…” Jack trailed off, considering his place and hers and which was better suited for a planning session. Then he blinked. “Sally, I completely forgot! Did I tell you that married couples live together?” Jack beamed widely. “You can move in to my mansion!” Really, why hadn’t they thought to do it sooner? It would simplify so many aspects of their lives. Except—
Jack remembered himself and his jaw snapped closed with a dull click. He knew Sally had worked very hard on her little house and Jack wouldn’t dream of taking it away from her. Jack looked earnestly into her eyes. “… If you want to, of course.”
For it is plain as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.

Jack's melancholy softened at Sally's words, and even more so at her touch. She felt a kind of gladness beyond describing at knowing that anything she did made his heart lighter. Jack answered her thoughts, saying that what she pointed out was right, and Sally could practically feel his enthusiasm re-inflating.
"I think so, too," she said softly, about the town being happy for them. "Which is the reaction we wanted most," she pointed out. This whole wedding was foremost for Jack and Sally, and to celebrate their love and promise before witnesses that they would never love anyone else. But Jack was the Pumpkin King. It was important, secondarily, at least, for Halloween Town to be in favor of a prospective Queen.
Sally's delicate fingers were stolen by Jack's spindly ones and drawn between them. He was bouncing right back to his former excitement, talking of plans they needed to make before the meeting the next day. Sally giggled at how quickly he was switching attitudes when something plainly occurred to him that stopped his sentence partway through.
The rag-doll's brow creased, but before she could ask what was the matter, Jack was going on, explaining another aspect of weddings and marriage that Sally had not known about: married couples lived together. Her mouth fell partly open. Jack paused, awkwardly saying that if the idea didn't please her they didn't have to go through with it.
"Don't be ridiculous!" Sally heard herself blurt out. "That sounds perfect." She stared up at him, large eyes full of sincerity. She was proud of the home and boutique she had made since moving out on her own. Sally knew that being the Pumpkin Queen wouldn't diminish or steal away her business, but, well... living with Jack, spending that amount of time with him, had been a dream she'd harbored since they first met. One she'd entertain while staring longingly out of her window at his Gothic abode while mixing potions or sewing.
"The more I learn about this marriage idea, the more wonderful it sounds."
