Now that Facilier had decided that he would, essentially, play both sides in the upcoming, inevitable conflict (until he figured out which side would win, at least), he needed to take some action to show his willingness to be a spy. To each side, really. Only he would know which side he was truly on, and even then, that wouldn't really happen until a bit later in the struggle.
No matter what he eventually decided, the way to start his dealings with the forces of good would be to approach one of the members of the Council of the Three. Which left the question: which member?
Probably not Snow White; her stepmother had used illusions and magic against her, and she was the youngest of the three. He didn't particularly want to plead his case (for he would have to plead before anyone would even start to trust him) before such a young girl.
For a reason that the Creole man didn't quite understand, he didn't want to approach Cinderella, either. Her prince seemed ... less tolerant than some of the others, and he didn't doubt that her prince would be with her when she heard his case.
Which left the Princess Aurora. He had heard good things about her, listening to the people in Louisianatown and on his travels to and around the Isle of the Crown. She was apparently quite compassionate, a trait that could work in his favor. He just hoped that the Princess would be more open-minded than the people of Louisianatown when it came to his heritage. Facilier was Creole, after all, and in New Orleans, that alone was a sin great enough to make life extremely difficult for him or anyone else of his birth.
But now, he had finally reached the great palace of Princess Aurora. Now that he was actually here, what he was about to do fully hit him. She might have him executed on sight! But he had to go through with it; he knew that the Baron Samedi would be greatly displeased if he didn't at least try.
And try he would.
Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Facilier mounted the steps to the castle, going through the front doors, only to meet armed soldiers beyond.
"What business have you with Her Majesty?" a soldier demanded, glare very visible beneath his helmet.
"I have come to seek an audience with the gracious lady," Facilier told the guard, looking him and his companions over, trying to gauge whether or not he'd be able to get away if they tried to grab him.
"You will wait here," he commanded, signaling to another guard, who disappeared deeper into the castle.
Last Edit: Jul 27, 2013 21:15:52 GMT -5 by Dr. Facilier
Aurora closed her eyes and took a deep breath and let it out slowly in an attempt to center herself. She opened her eyes again and a determined expressions swept across her face. She held her palms out in front of her, one hand angled toward the sky and the other towards the ground, and bent her knees to strengthen her stance. She then sharply curled her fingers and twisted her body towards the right in a brisk motion as she lifted her elbows into the air, keeping her hands in the same position. The mound of dirt in front of her reshaped itself into a cube-like shape each side about five feet long then it lifted into the air as she shifted her position.
She could feel her breathing growing heavy and deep with the exertion of holding onto the energies that allowed her to manipulate the earth in front of her. She rotated her hands and moved them back in front of her body and she now appeared as though she were carrying a small invisible box. The cube of dirt also rotated ninety degrees and then hovered in place as though waiting for further orders. Aurora could feel beads of sweat forming on her brow as the stress of what she was doing continued to wear on her body.
With a grunt she abruptly threw her hands down and then straight up into the air. The cube of dirt splashed to the ground in an almost liquid-like fashion and then a large rectangular wall of dirt raised straight out of it about ten feet into the air. It was about five feet wide and two feet thick. Aurora dropped her arms as she doubled over and clutched at her thighs to keep herself from falling forward gulping in deep breaths of the cool outside air.
The effort she needed to exert in order to perform the slightest tasks within her element was taxing to put it mildly. She was furious with herself for allowing her mystic studies to fall so far down on her list of priorities. Maleficent would be coming for her. If not her, her father, her mother, Philip. So many people that she loved where in great danger, moreso than they might have been all because she had chosen not to pursue the gift that had been bestowed upon her by the land.
Aurora's body jerked upright again and a rush of adrenaline flooded her as an approaching noise caused her to turn. She relaxed almost instantly as she realized it was one of the guard. She tried to pull herself together and hold herself as she normally would if her body was not almost shaking with fatigue.
When the guard went on to explain why he had come to her, her lips twisted into a small frown. The hours during which she was holding court and accepting petitions had been over for a little over an hour which is why she'd chosen to get in some training. She looked away and took in a breath as she tried to compose herself and think. Eventually, "I'll see him. Bring him to the throne room."
"As you wish," The guard hesitated, "But we will not rush."
Aurora gave him a gentle smile as he turned to go but inwardly scolded herself. She was grateful for the extra few moments to collect herself but the man had clearly had seen right through her attempt to pretend she wasn't as exhausted as she felt. She would need to put on a better front. With a final glance back at the wall of dirt that stood stoically where she had left it, she left the garden and set off to make herself presentable to receive before returning to the throne room and standing in front of the high seat.
(OOC: Let me know if this is not okay and I will fix anything needed )

Facilier waited where he'd been told to stand, trying desperately not to fidget. It wouldn't do to look nervous before he even entered the throne room, especially in front of mere lackeys. He would show a little bit of the nervousness that he was feeling when he met with the Princess Aurora, and not before.
After all, if he didn't seem to be at least a little bit nervous, he would appear extremely suspicious.
The fact that he was here was already suspicious, he was sure. Facilier knew that he was just going to have to make his case very convincingly, make her believe, make her trust him.
"You," the guard who had left snapped as he returned. "Follow me."
He turned on his heel and walked further into the palace, expecting that Facilier would follow.
The lithe man slipped past the other guards, following his guide to the throne room, where the Princess Aurora stood before her great throne.
Facilier sank into a low bow, taking his hat off as he bent before the Princess.
"Princess Aurora," he murmured, staying in his low bow. "Thank you very much for allowing me an audience."
Aurora had no idea what to expect from this meeting. She knew of the one called Doctor Facilier. She knew the stories of everyone that passed into the country of Rohandor. It was her job to know. She made it a point to know. But she also knew that he had lost any powers that he once had. He paid for his crimes in that he was little better than a street peddler after once having abilities beyond the dreams of most. But he had seemed content with his lot from what she had been told and was quite unclear as to what he could possibly want of her.
The tall dark man approached her and bowed low. Though she appreciated the respectful gesture she was uncertain she would ever become accustomed to anyone treating her with any sort of reverence.
She thought that it would feel more ominous meeting with someone who had once bought and sold the souls of the innocents that happened upon him in the streets of Louisianatown but ominous wasn’t exactly the word. Though he certainly sported an intimidating figure, he somehow managed to present himself humbly and without any sort of pretense. It didn’t make Aurora any less wary of him but she found herself further intrigued about the purpose of his visit.
“Of course.” Aurora nodded to his gracious statement. Though Aurora longed to sink down into her throne and rest after her exertions earlier but she pushed the thoughts aside, standing strong in front of the …guest. “Please,” She began, “Rise. Welcome to my home. Tell me, Facilier, why have you journeyed all the way to the Kingdom of the Dawn?”

As soon as the Princess told him to rise, Facilier stood upright, replacing his hat on his head in one smooth, fluid motion.
“I have come, Princess, to offer you my services, such as they are, in the inevitable conflict,” he murmured, getting straight to the point.
He could have beaten around the bush, tried to small-talk for a while, but this seemed the best way, the most ... direct route, anyway.
After he’d spoken, though, he realized that his words might be misconstrued; she might think that he was here to read her cards or to tell her fortune, when that was, at the moment, far from his mind.
“Perhaps I should clarify. If you want me to read your cards, I can, of course, oblige, but that’s not why I’m here. I’ve come to your castle, before you, to serve as a double agent.”
It was blunt, but why be indirect when this was the reason he’d come. Even he didn’t truly know which side he would be on, but he could work both angles for a while, until he figured out what Baron Samedi wanted.
Aurora blinked. Of all the requests, sentiments, offers, news, or even threats this man might be bringing to her court that day, the proposal that Facilier had just presented her with was probably the last thing she ever would have thought anyone might suggest. "A double agent." She heard her skeptic voice repeat, betraying what she hoped was a cool and collected exterior.
Her initial instinct was to thank him for his... offer and respectfully decline. She didn't trust him as far as he stood from her right now. The fact that he was actually offering to purposefully lie and betray in order to gain and report back information for her ironically didn't earn him any trust points. If he was willing to perform those deeds in order to gain her trust, who was to say that he wouldn't be willing to do the same to Aurora and her people?
And yet, what if he were telling the truth? He could potentially provide them with invaluable information about Maleficent and what the others were up to.
If he were in fact telling the truth.
More than likely he was sent to gain information on her and her plans. Not that she had any information or plans worth stealing yet. The fact that she was untrained her in magic would probably be something Maleficent would be interested to know but that was a secret that she had little doubt was easily bought. She trusted those in her court and castle though, and hoped that she was wrong in that assumption.
After a long pause where she wore a considering expression and scrutinized the tall lanky man, Aurora tilted her head. "And what would you ask in return for this... help you offer? You would be putting yourself right in the line of fire of individuals with great power. Why would you risk your life to help us?"

Facilier watched as the woman considered his words. It was almost painfully obvious, though she tried to hide her true opinion on the matter, that she didn't believe him. Oh, it might not have been as clear to others, but he was well-skilled in the art of reading expressions; even the slightest change could reveal much more than a person wished to someone like Facilier.
In truth, he was rather nervous about the part he was offering to play. Baron Samedi was the loa of death, but he was also the loa of healing, and what better way to serve his patron loa than to offer his help to both sides of the conflict, the way that Baron Samedi was on both sides of death?
Of course, it was going to take him some time, he knew, to earn the trust of the people on this side of the coin. By accepting Maleficent's offer of returning his shadow, he had at least gained a foothold with herself and her comrades. But he was going to have to work much harder to gain the trust of the so-called "heroes."
He would have much preferred staying out of the conflict all together, but since that wasn't an option, this seemed like the best path for him to take.
What did he want in return? He'd received his shadow from Maleficent, in return for his help, but what did he want, now that he was offering his help to this group?
"All I would ask, Princess, is a safe place for me to live and practice my art," he responded, surprising even himself with his request. "Louisanatown is ... less than cordial to someone of my ... background."
Aurora tilted her head slightly at what she perceived to be a rather bizarre request. Whatever he might have asked her for, this would certainly not have been at the top of her list of guesses. "Someone of your background," She repeated. It was a statement, not a question. She strode forward and descended the few dais stairs that lead away from her throne to stand in front of Facilier. Some of the guards that lined the walls looked as though they might step forward. She shot them a warning look and they shifted back into their sentinel-like stance.
Arms at her sides, Aurora looked up at the significantly taller man with an unflinching gaze. It didn't matter that she was tired from her exertions in practicing her earth magic. It didn't matter that she stood alone today holding court. It didn't matter that this man had a questionable past. That he was physically stronger than her. That he lived his life making deals and playing mind games with innocent people. She was the ruler of this kingdom and one of the three most powerful monarchs in the entire realm. She was not looking to be toyed with and he needed to understand. Her expression hardened.
"Do you mean your background in card tricks and fortune telling, or do you mean your tendency toward dealings with dark magic." She held up a hand to silence him. "Do not answer that and do not take me for a fool. I know of you and your... choices that brought you to your current situation." She turned slightly and strode away from him as she began to pace as she pondered her decision. "But I do believe that everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves," She mused a little less harshly. Tiana and Naveen probably wouldn't be quite as forgiving as Aurora was already being.
Part of her desperately wished that Philip where there. Or that she could take a moment to confer with the other two of her Council but she knew that this was something she needed to decide for herself. If she told him no, that she would not help him then she was confirming that he would not help her at all. And would he simply return to his home in Louisanatown and move on? Or would he become her enemy straight away?
The fact was, if she agreed to this she would potentially have access to information that she would otherwise not have. And she would be able to have at least a little control concerning someone that might otherwise become a threat to her and her people. He might still be a threat but perhaps for now, it would simply remain a threat and not produce immediate action. She turned back to face him, "Tell me Facilier, as a show of good faith, through what circumstances do you suggest you would be able to offer your services as a double agent?"

As Facilier listened to the ruler of the kingdom in which he was currently standing, he could practically feel the doubt in the air. She doubted his sincerity, doubted his wish to be able to live in peace, once this was over; she doubted him entirely.
He couldn't really blame her; his past wasn't exactly spotless, after all. But he was listening to Baron Samedi again, something he'd neglected during his time with his "friends." They were no friends but loa of mischief. Facilier had overlooked that because of their promises.
But that wouldn't happen again. It couldn't happen again. He knew better, now.
"I do not take you for a fool, Princess Aurora," Facilier said softly, resisting the urge to fidget. He needed to appear confident and collected in front of this woman.
Despite her warning not to answer her question, Facilier said, once she had finished speaking, "My background, Princess, is that of a Creole man. Louisanatown is full of all sorts of people, but because of my Creole blood, I am second class."
That wasn't the important thing, though; he needed to answer the question that the Princess had posed, before he'd decided he needed to expand upon his background.
"Your enemy intends to gather as many of those who had been trapped in the Stone as possible, to build an army of dark forces to bring against you," the Shadow Man murmured, hoping that the Princess would at least give him a chance to help. "They expect me to assist them, when the time comes."
Aurora let her eyes shift down towards the stone floor of the room allowing her gaze to become unfocused as she continued to consider. All of her same thoughts and concerns from the start of this conversation to where she now found herself, replayed again and again. As did every word Facilier spoke especially these last. There was very little doubt in her mind that at least in this instance Facilier was telling the truth. She'd had her assumptions about her enemies and activities. If anyone could understand the feelings of anger at having been trapped in a potentially eternal sleep, it was her. So many powerful beings out to destroy and extract revenge. Though she had asked the question, hearing Facilier's confirmation of their plans was troubling to say the least.
Striding thoughtfully back towards the throne, Aurora climbed the few steps back up the rise and turned to face her petitioner, her decision made. Though she spoke firmly before, she now spoke more kindly. If she was going to agree to Facilier's terms and become allies him, the least she could do was at least try to trust him. "Very well, Facilier. I accept your offer. In return as you have requested you may set up shop here in the Dawn Kingdom if that is agreeable to you. If not, we can discuss an alternative after you have gathered or sent for your things. In addition I also offer my protection for you are treading in very dangerous waters, something I'm certain you have already considered. I trust you will take care in this venture?"
Aurora did not mention that not everyone would give him such a chance even though it was true. It was something he clearly already was aware of. She also didn't feel the need to remind him that she would be watching or that he would pay if he betrayed them. It was not her way to demand loyalty by fear. Until he proved that he was not trustworthy, all she could do was give him the benefit of the doubt.
Though by keeping him here on the island with her it would allow her to keep an eye on him as best she could. That however, was something her enemies would expect her to do and it would look suspicious on him if she did not. It was beneficial to everyone.
There was no doubt in her mind she was going to get backlash from the others of the council but there was nothing to be done about it. Trusting this man was a risk at best. In offering to be a double agent, he was going to be lying to someone. Or telling the truth to everyone. Either way not only would he be reporting back to Aurora things he heard, though whether any of what he said was true or not she would have to decide for herself, but he would also be reporting back to whomever he was in contact with. More than likely he would tell the others the truth about what she and her own forces were doing.
Was she going to be making herself more vulnerable than it was worth? Was she opening her front door to allow a snake inside that would poison her kingdom? She couldn't know. Right now though, the best decision she could make would be to take this deal and do her best to keep an eye on the cunning man she'd just struck a bargain with. "Do we have any further business?"

Facilier listened to Princess Aurora's words, expression solemn.
Wait a moment, she expected him to set up his shop here, on her island? That would look incredibly suspicious to Maleficent and her allies. But he also understood her wish to keep him close at hand, to keep an eye on him.
Bowing low once more, Facilier said, hoping that she wouldn't misunderstand his intentions, "Forgive me, Princess, but there is something more."
Taking a deep breath, he stood, adding, "It would look suspicious to those I for whom I appear to be working, if I stay in your kingdom." He thought quickly, trying to figure out a place that would allow Aurora's people to keep an eye on him (as they were sure to want to do), as well as giving him enough free rein to ... be himself and consult Baron Samedi in his actions.
"I've heard of a place on the Isle of the Crown called Andalasia. I could go there, if Your Highness would permit it." He very much wanted to be able to live for as long as possible, and if Maleficent thought he was working against her, he would be dead before he could even think of escaping.
Aurora studied Facilier for a long moment. She supposed she could see the logic in his words. If he suddenly set up shop outside the Forbidden Mountain she knew she would find that dreadfully suspicious. She didn't like the idea of allowing him out of her close watch but she also knew that, unfortunately, he was right. If he were in fact a double agent and trying to help them, he couldn't remain in her kingdom.
She also didn't like the idea of shouldering Andalasia's rulers with her burden, however. She was the one that had struck the bargain with Facilier and she felt as though she should be the one to follow through with it but there didn't seem to be any way to get around this shift in location. She wished that she could talk to Edward and Nancy prior to granting this request, particularly since he had in fact had their kingdom ready as an alternative which made her wonder, but for a number of reasons she felt an urgency to settle this matter now.
"I don't see why that would be a problem." She nodded, "Very well. Andalasia it is." She looked at the man in front of her, tried to really look. He seemed as though he were being genuine. He looked a little tired and there was a nervous tension about him. His eyes seemed almost a little sad, as a man who had lost everything. There was something else there that she couldn't identify but met his gaze anyway. She felt her own hard exterior soften just a little, "I do hope that you mean what you say. Everyone deserves a second chance and if you help us in this, I and Rohandor itself will be forever in your debt."

Even though Facilier hadn't yet figured out where his true loyalties should be, he knew that he was going to help this woman. There was something about her, something that inspired people to want to impress her, to do what they told her they were going to do. Perhaps it was because she'd been born a Princess. She certainly appeared to have a natural sort of grace that drew people to her.
For a moment, he thought she might refuse to allow him to go to Andalasia, that she would insist that he stay here, in her kingdom, in which case, his assistance to her cause was already lost. He wanted to help her, yes, but he also wanted to stay alive. And that would be something that would be rather difficult, if he stayed here and tipped Maleficent to the fact that he was working both for and against her.
But then, after that long, agonizing moment of doubt, Aurora agreed.
Facilier felt himself breathe a sigh of relief; now he could go about the business of choosing which side he should help more, and which side he should misdirect. If he did anything of the kind, to start out. He would probably only make sure that each side was on equal footing, for the moment.
But if he had to, he could choose a side; he was putting that off for as long as possible. It wouldn't do to declare for one side or the other too soon and end up on the wrong side. He'd done that once before, already with his .... "friends."
Even as he was thinking all of this, Aurora's words cut him to his core. She was giving him a second chance and he was thinking about ways to keep his own skin safe. But he'd been alone and had had to think of himself, first and foremost, for so long that it was going to take a while to change, if he even could.
"Thank you," was all he said, hiding the turmoil of his thoughts. "I will try to be worth of this second chance."
With another low bow, he turned to go, already figuring out how he would get all of his belongings to Andalasia and where he would live once he was there.
Aurora’s eyes followed Facilier as he bowed to her and then left the hall. She stood there staring after him even after he would have been completely escorted from the castle. She hoped she had made the right decision but only time would be able to reveal the answer to that complex question. Some might call her naive or foolish even to trust him and allow a metaphorical snake into her garden. Maybe they were right. Maybe this snake would bite her in the end.
She couldn’t let herself believe that, though. Aurora meant what she said about giving him a second chance and what it would mean to her and the rest of the kingdom if he truly meant what he said. Things were changing and changing quickly. While she didn’t like the idea of taking chances with her kingdoms safety, it was already in jeopardy and in a way, she couldn’t afford not to.
Steeling herself with the knowledge that whatever happened next would happen and there was no point in worrying about it now, Aurora summoned a messenger. “Please. Send word to King Edward and Queen Nancy of Andalasia. They need to know of Facilier’s arrival.” She went on to suggest some options as far as accommodations and to apologize for not consulting them before agreeing to the request. They would understand, or at least she hoped they would. Sometimes rulers had to make sacrifices and hard choices for the good of everyone.
