Jane couldn't believe that Tarzan hadn't caught up with her yet. She just hoped he wasn't letting her beat him back to the treehouse; that wouldn't be nearly as much fun as if she actually managed to make it back first through ingenuity.
It was a good thing he'd had to take a moment to get the pie out of his face or he would certainly have caught up to her by now.
The young woman didn't slow or stop until she reached the treehouse, slightly out of breath and a bit sore. She'd never purposefully travelled that fast through the trees before, not without Tarzan helping her. It was invigorating! She'd actually managed to make it home before Tarzan had!
Heading out onto the "balcony" (they didn't call it that, but that's what it was), Jane adopted a triumphant pose, calling out into the jungle, "I won!"
She couldn't wait to tell Tarzan, when he got back.
Which was really rather silly, when one came right down to it. He would know she had won as soon as he got back to the treehouse. But Jane was so excited that she wasn't thinking about that; she just wanted to share her triumphant good news with the person she loved most in the world, next to Daddy.
((OOC: Let me know if this is okay. If you think it's unrealistic for her to have gotten back first, let me know and I'll change things. ))
Tarzan managed to catch up thirty seconds later, passing through the house towards the 'balcony'. He heard Jane's declaration of victory and was pretty impressed. She was learning vine swinging very fast compared to the lifetime he had spent, though in turn she had told him in the past that he'd learned English faster than expected. It wasn't just the head start either. Though at this point she was four ahead of his two, the paint fight, the mud throw, the pie and this race. It wasn't over until someone gave up but still, she was overwhelming him and had better odds unless he could slow her down. He hid a length of vine behind his back as he met with Jane, still excited over her victory.
"Nice swinging Jane. If you'd grown up here instead you'd make a good ape."
The road to hell, good intentions and all that. He meant it as a compliment that'd she'd handle the jungle well, taking out all the rough parts like Sabor and such. Still, maybe she'd get his intent right away, or would still be lost in her good mood for a while. Tarzan waited for her to catch her breath and calm down, readying his next joke.
"So, while you're the new jungle protector...."
Tarzan threw the end of the vine out, lassoing Jane and pulling her into one of the nearby chairs. She was just loosely tangled around the arms and could slip out easily with a little struggling, so best to distract her. He sat in the chair opposite and grabbed her ankle. She would probably make him pay big time later.
"I guess I'll be the villain. So how about you tell me what other pranks you have planned Jungle Girl?"
Using his other hand he began tickling Janes foot. When they'd first met he'd learned this during a bad first impression at having met another human. At the time he was just glad she'd stopped shouting at him, she seemed happy, then she'd hit him upside the head. Now it was just another part of the game, that she might kill him for once she got loose.

Jane's exultant mood at having beaten Tarzan at one of the things at which he was best was short-lived, however, as he told her that she'd make a good ape.
"I beg your pardon!" she exclaimed, putting her hands on her hips. She'd been raised as a good English girl, and to insinuate that she was ... actually quite the compliment, coming from Tarzan. Jane had opened her mouth to say something scathing, but she shut it again, realizing that he'd meant it as a good thing.
He'd grown up as an ape, after all, though he was physically a human being.
Instead of ranting or raving as she would have originally done, Jane just blushed and murmured "Thank you."
She wasn't at all prepared for what Tarzan had planned. The young woman laughed at the joke that she was the new jungle protector, but when her husband lassoed her to a chair with a vine, she stared at him, blinking.
It didn't take her long to start to struggle, but before she could really get anywhere, Tarzan was playing quite the cruel trick on her: he was tickling her.
He'd found out just how ticklish she was when they'd first met, and now he was using that against her.
Jane laughed and squirmed, trying to pull her foot out of his grasp.
"Not fair!" she wheezed, still laughing.
It was at that point that she realized her other foot was still free. Just like she had in their first meeting, Jane kicked out at Tarzan, hitting him in the chest instead of the head, this time.
"Not bloody likely!" she responded to his question, still giggling.
In the few moments of respite she had, she wiggled out of the vines and the chair, only to leap at Tarzan, much the way she had when she'd chosen to stay with him.

"It's all fair." Tarzan replied to her protests. "Until it doesn't go your way."
Jane seemed to agree with his lesson as he felt the impact in his chest, knocking him out of his chair and onto the balcony floor. He was winded for a second as she freed herself and made her thoughts clear on his offer to quit.
"Just like that."
Tarzan was half ready for Jane leaping, bringing his arms up to catch her around the waist and briefly tickling her sides. Then the ful impact of her attack caught up with him and she had him pinned down. He had several methods of getting free in a fight but this was just for fun, it wouldn't be safe or right to go too far.
"In my defense you have a good laugh. It's like music."
Fully honest, but he did have the small expectation that she'd be distracted by the compliment. Even just to delay her until he could find an opening.

She couldn't help but giggle as Tarzan tickled her again, but after only a moment, she was the one with the upper hand, pinning him as she was. Oh, it wasn't likely to last for long; he was much stronger than she was, but she was going to enjoy her victory while it lasted.
"Compliments aren't going to win this contest for you," she said with a grin. "Your good looks and charm will only take you so far, especially with me."
They would take him far enough, if she was being honest. He was quite charming and very easy on the eyes, if she admitted it to herself. Which she had, of course, considering she'd decided to stay in the jungle for love of him. And for love of the jungle itself.
Jane had fallen utterly heads-over-heels for Tarzan and his jungle home, and she hadn't regretted it for a moment. Well, maybe she regretted not being able to meet the Queen, but for all she knew, that could still happen!
She was getting off-track with her thoughts, though; she needed to figure out some sort of prank that would put her back in the lead. As far as she was concerned, anyway. Jane wasn't quite sure how this whole contest was being "scored."
Either way, she was was an artist; she should be able to think of something clever!
And just like that, she had an idea. She had the currently unfinished painting of that snake. If she did say so herself, it was quite realistic. All she had to do was get away quickly enough, plant the snake in a place that would make it look even more convincing, and get Tarzan to come across it.
"Give me a five minute head-start," she said as she leapt up and ran off into the treehouse.
It was somewhat unnerving for Tarzan. Jane had him trapped and her smile looked like she was half enjoying his compliment and half considering all manner of ways to get back at him. In a fight with any kind of wild animal he'd already be loose and countering but in this situation he just had to wait there for her response. Luckily her plan apparently required her to be elsewhere as she left him on the balcony and rushed off shouting about a head start.
"Okay. Five minutes."
Tarzan was having so much fun with this game, even moreso that Jane was enjoying it as well. She always put in full effort and enthusiasm to any task she took on and inspired that in others. If the ape man hadn't fallen for the young Englishwoman at first sight in that rain soaked tree then her determination and passion had truly stolen his affections.
When Tarzan had first came to their camp he'd initially learned from Jane, the Professor and Clayton. The latter two saw it as a scientific curiosity or an easy way to achieve more sinister ends, but Jane brought some excitement into the lessons. The two would spend days going through books and projector slides, Tarzan eager to know everything he'd missed in the human world and Jane keeping him gripped by explaining it until his curiosity was overridden by her need to sleep. Naturally Clayton considered it a waste of time (since literacy and culture didn't help him find gorillas to poach) and would interrupt where he could only for the teacher and student to leave the camp and spend the day in the treetops, Jane with her sketchpad and Tarzan using his animal calls to set up all sorts of birds and animals for her to draw.
This day was reminding him of those earlier times, Jane putting in all her capability and drawing the same from Tarzan just so he could keep up. He perched on the balcony rail with a smile while he was lost in his thoughts. Then he realised she actually talked him into giving her a head start, four of her five minutes were already up.
"Jane? What are you up to?"
Tarzan dropped from the rail and knuckle walked cautiously into the treehouse, looking upwards in case she intended to ambush him from the rafters. She had learned to climb well after all.

If Jane had known how easy it was to convince Tarzan to give her a head-start, she'd have mentioned having one earlier, when she'd needed one even more. So far, this particular idea was working out in her favor. So far. She still had to hide the painting and then get Tarzan to come across it, but she had a few ideas on that front.
Snatching up the painting, she leapt out of the treehouse, running off as soon as she hit the ground. She ran for a full minute and found the perfect hiding place for the painting, among a clump of fern-type plants, with the sunlight dappling on the painting making it hard to tell whether or not the creature was moving.
She hid the edges of the canvas with the plants, then stepped back to admire her handiwork. Oh, there was no doubt that she could have hidden it better if she had more time, but for the little time she had, it was perfect.
Jane took a deep breath, then ran back to the treehouse and was almost back to where she'd started when Tarzan called out to her.
"Trying to catch my breath," she laughed, taking deep gulps of air.
Once she'd managed to get her breathing back to normal, she went over to Tarzan, smiling sweetly. "Why don't we take a little bit of a break from our game and go for a lovely walk," she suggested, hoping she sounded charming. She'd never been that good at things like being charming or "catching a man," as her friends in London would have said. Besides, once she'd had Tarzan, she hadn't wanted anyone else. And she hadn't so much "caught" him as she had fallen for him and into his arms. And she wouldn't have it any other way.
From how she was trying to catch her breath again, Jane had either spent her head start practising for another race or setting up one seriously complicated trap. Tarzan looked suspiciously around the interior of the treehouse in case she was ready to spring it on him. Whatever it was it could likely be the winning move to their game. Paranoia was the default thought at this point. Then she suggested taking a break and a walk, turning up the sweetness but with a suspicious twinkle in her eyes. Trap or not Tarzan had a hard time refusing.
"Sure. A walk sounds nice."
He wisely held his tongue on asking if she was getting tired and was ready to quit, certain that she still had something in mind. If he went too ahead he risked her slipping off to plot more, but dropping behind meant she could lead him into an ambush or somewhere she had the advantage. The best option was to stay close and hope that Jane wouldn't spring her trap where she could get caught in it too.
After stepping out to the balcony and perching on the rail Tarzan grabbed two vines, handing one to Jane and sliding down to ground level. Going for a walk usually meant ground level, taking it slow and enjoying the scenery rather than speeding through the trees. Occasionally they'd find a good spot to come back to later for sketching, picnics or just watching the movements of the jungle. The apeman waited for Jane to descend then followed her lead, while also trying to keep alongside her. He even walked upright, hoping that if he changed from his usual habits it would give him a slight advantage, or at least his arms were a little bit closer to any low branches for a quick escape.

Well, so far, so good. Tarzan seemed to be wary (no surprise there; he'd been raised in the jungle, after all, and he had to be wary practically every second), but he was going along with her suggestion that they go for a walk.
He offered her a vine and she smiled at him as she took it, following him (albeit a bit slower) out of the treehouse to the ground. Now, she had to simply remain cool, calm, and collected until they came upon her latest attempt at playing this game properly. Jane hadn't really played many games when she was growing up, and those that she had played had been based more along the lines of pretending to be a grand scientist like her father as opposed to anything mischievous like this.
She had been an odd child, to say the least, an odd child who had grown up to be, in society's eyes, an odd adult. Jane Porter had never put much stock into society, which was, in the end, one of the reasons she'd chosen to eschew it to stay in the jungle with the man she loved. She was just happy that her Daddy had chosen to stay, too.
Smiling over at Tarzan, she started off in the direction of her "trap."
"It's not really anything new, but it's a lovely day for a walk. Possibly a picnic!" she said with a giggle. It really was a lovely day. Jane just hoped that this joke would go over the way that she thought it would and that she wouldn't scare Tarzan too much. If it succeeded at all. Which was still debatable. Tarzan had grown up in the jungle, after all, and she had not. Any sight of a snake like the one she'd been painting would have sent her into a tizzy just months ago. It was still quite terrifying. Less so, considering that Tarzan was here, but still reason to pause.
Tarzan followed warily, trying to enjoy the walk while he could. When Jane giggled it put him in an alarmed state, thinking that she'd let slip that this was all part of the plan. He kept with his plan of staying neither too far head or behind, settling on walking alongside Jane.
"Yeah. It's a good day for it."
After a few minutes of walking Tarzan began to loosen up. Eventually he relaxed enough to hold Jane's hand, smiling slightly. From what he could tell she honestly wanted to take a break from the game for a while and just enjoy each others company, an idea that he didn't object to.
"It's been a very good day. I've enjoyed playing with..look out."
Tarzan noticed a snake in the undergrowth. Pouncing between it and Jane he crouched ready to lunge if it made any move towards them. From growing up in the jungle he'd learned that larger snakes crush, but smaller snakes like this one poisoned their prey. Tarzan raised one hand back and opened his hand, ready to snatch it around the throat if necessary. Kerchek had performed such an action many times to project the gorillas, unfortunately Tarzan hadn't had as much experience as his adopted father. If he was on his own he'd be fine, but the snake had a choice of targets.
"Jane." Tarzan kept his eye on the motionless serpent, it seemed to stare right back at him. "Get off the ground, hide until it leaves."
It would be a waiting game for now. Hopefully the creature would sense a threat in Tarzan and would go elsewhere. Of course since this was a very well drawn piece of art that wouldn't be too likely. Not that Tarzan knew that.

Jane smiled up at Tarzan as he took her hand; even if she was planning mischievous things, it was still nice to be able to spend time with Tarzan, just the two of them. After all, she and her Daddy had been accepted as part of the gorilla family, and that meant very rarely getting any time to themselves. Not that she minded, generally. Still, it was quite lovely to have Tarzan to herself for a bit, even if it was just because they were playing this game.
The young woman was about to tell Tarzan that she was enjoying herself much more than she thought she would when they came across her painting. Tarzan told Jane to take to the trees, readying himself for the snake to make its move.
Hiding a smile, instead of doing as he'd said and climbing one of the nearby vines or trees, Jane stepped around Tarzan, taking a few steps closer to the serpent. She felt a little bit bad for tricking him in this way, but if she didn't resort to things like this, there was no way she could have managed to keep up with Tarzan, let alone potentially winning their game.
She'd grown up in and around London, after all, and had had a different sort of upbringing than he had. His had consisted of much socialization within the family and hers..., well, she'd been much more isolated, strictly speaking. She'd been around more humans, yes, but she'd had fewer friends. Jane had been perfectly content at that point in her life, but in playing games, she was definitely lacking.
"What, hide until this little thing leaves?" she asked, innocently enough as she reached towards the painting, trying quite hard to hide her amusement.
"Jane?" Tarzan whispered as she approached the snake contrary to his warning. "What are you doing?"
One attribute Tarzan noticed about Jane was a stubborn sort of bravery she had, easy to pick up on considering Tarzan was the same way most of the time. Be it dangerous animals or the few ill tempered humans that occasionally ended up at the trading post, neither of them wanted to be the first to back down from a confrontation if it for the benefit of others. Hypocritically Tarzan thought this was a troublesome attribute for Jane given some of the dangers around the jungle, namely this snake she was so calm around. Abandoning his strategy he rushed forwards to stop her. When he was close enough he grabbed her wrist.
"Jane wait! This isn't part of the game. You win just don't.."
He stopped mid sentence as he noticed the snake up close, another of her paintings. His brow furrowed as he ran over things in his head. He did think it was an unfair trick, but like he said earlier anything was fair game. Plus there was the fact that he'd just quit the game in a mistaken belief that she was in trouble. He couldn't help but laugh at the whole situation. By the rules she had won fair and square and it was impressive for her first try (though he was slightly doubtful that it was her first time now). It had taken a long time for Tarzan to beat Terk when they were children and Tantor usually gave up preemptively so he wouldn't get caught up in the escalation.
"Jane wins." He acknowledged his loss, then let a small smirk form as he had a last idea he wished he'd used earlier. "I'll carry your painting. You have your hands full."
He moved his hand down her wrist to hold hers, then took her other hand and held them both outstretched. Taking a breath he looked up into the trees and let out a few whistle like calls, summoning a small colourful flock of jungle birds from above. Responding to the call they perched on Jane's arms from her shoulders down to her wrists, tweeting merrily as Tarzan picked up the snake painting carefully and started walking ahead. It was still a good day to walk for a while, plus he had the next few days of his forfeit to look forwards to. Though the question of who the original 'artist' was that inspired the game was nagging at Tarzan a little.
"I'll tell them to leave after we finish our walk. Maybe."
