The spell took effect while Tarzan was in the water, though he recognised the swirling portal from earlier the effect was even more disorienting than it was on land. This time he just went with the flow, trying to judge exactly what direction 'up' was when he emerged. Once the exit portal opened Tarzan found himself back on dry land, or at least it was dry until a steady shower of the moat water came with the ape man in a downpour over his head.
Tarzan spluttered for a few seconds, tucking Belindas property close to his chest for protection. After the shower subsided. Briefly he was curious about a few things that had come up during his journey through the castle. Things like who this Narissa was that terrified the guards, why some of the items in the tower looked so sinister and why Belinda was wasting her limited magic to bring him back so quickly when she could have saved it to help someone and he could have easily met up with her. As he looked up those questions were pushed aside as he found someone new standing before him, a tall slender woman looking down at him with some strange mix of amusement and a few other things.
"Who are you?"
Tarzan couldn't think of anything else to ask. First off he didn't want to mention Belinda to this newcomer just in case, secondly he was curious that this might be someone else summoning him for some kind of help and finally he was getting a very bad feeling from this woman. The way she looked at him reminded Tarzan of Clayton, like they didn't think he was worth talking to unless they could benefit from it.
More wary than ever, Tarzan tucked the cauldron and the items inside behind him for protection, keeping in a crouched position and ready to pounce as a warning. Of course he lost a bit of intimidation given his current 'wet dog' look.
It took quite a bit of Narissa's willpower not to laugh at his dumbfounded appearance, though her smirk did widen at his pathetic attempt to intimidate her. "A bit slow to catch on, aren't we, dear?" On the last word, she let her voice grow shill to mimic that of 'Belinda' once more. She paused a moment to drink in his reaction--oh, how she enjoyed watching her hapless victims finally connect the dots, just when it was too late--and then she continued to address him, resting one gloved hand on her hip.
"I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don't have much experience with magic, otherwise you might have known about a little thing called shapeshifting. Not that it matters. You're going to be getting much better acquainted with my kind of magic now that you're working for me." She waved her free hand, and the dirt under Tarzan's feet turned to a quicksand-like mud, which caused him to sink slightly and get stuck. As she spoke, she paced around him, circling like a vulture. "Here's how things are going to be. Whenever I call you, you come running. You do exactly as I tell you, right when I tell you to do it. And you don't tell anyone else that you work for me. Got that?"
Finally, she stopped in front of him. "Oh, and I have your whole little escapade in Edward's castle recorded." With another wave of her hand, the image of Tarzan fighting with the castle guards appeared in midair, just long enough for the jungle man to take in the scene. "Harmless old 'Belinda' could turn you in to his guards as the mastermind behind that theft at any time, so don't get any ideas about disobeying me." She was bluffing ever-so-slightly, but kept up an air of cool confidence. Edward would likely suspect her hand in this no matter what, and so she couldn't quite make good on her threat, but Tarzan wouldn't know that. Would he? She pursed her lips, trying to push all doubt from her mind. "So. Do we understand each other, or do I have to wait for your brain to catch up with your ears?"
Tarzan's face locked into a shocked look as the womans punctuated her introduction by changing her voice to match the kindly old woman who had brought him to this Isle. From what he could tell by her taunts, she'd used him for some sinister purpose and intended to keep at it. He wasn't going to let that stand.
"I'll never work for you!"
He prepared to lunge forward, intending to restrain the villain and drag her back to the castle and explain things. Narissa's magic, unlucky for Tarzan, worked faster than his physical strength. One step forward and he was suddenly waist deep in the suddenly half solid ground, struggling to not sink any further. She continued her lecture on the plans she had for him, that he'd do anything she wanted whenever, whatever and wherever.
"I'd rather die than help you." If the sandtrap kept up he just might.
Narissa had prepared for his defiance, or she was ignoring any resistance he put up. Tarzans face dropped again as she showed him an image of the fight in the castle and named the owner. Edward. Tarzan had met Edward a short while back in the Jungle and considered the man a friend. Edward had taught him about politics, royal duties and many other interesting things. This woman had tricked him into betraying a friend and intended to hold it over him for who knew how long. Death he might face easily, but what his friends would think of him, what Jane would think. He couldn't think of any way out of this, plus Tarzan wasn't considering that he never really kept his emotions hidden so Narissa could probably already read him like an open book at this point. His anger, humiliation, desperation and defeat was as clear as her amusement. Tarzan hung his head in shame.
"Please don't tell anyone."
Suddenly inspiration hit. The pot full of her magical items was still behind him. He could at least deny her the chance to profit from this act. He turned, slowly due to the quicksand, and tried to grab at the cauldron and pull it in with him and sink it. His struggles only increased how fast he was sinking and Tarzan was soon neck deep with his arm outstretched and his fingers just brushing the cauldron. If he could just deny her this one small thing..
Narissa tried not to look too amused at Tarzan's resistance, even though she knew it didn't really matter any more what he thought of her. Best to ease him into things. The dynamic that Narissa had with her servants was rather unpleasant for the one doing the serving, and she suspected that her open cruelty towards Nathaniel had pushed him to betray her. As much as she wanted to sling insults at her inferiors, she'd had enough time to think about these things while recovering from her stay in the Forever Stone to realize that this wasn't the best method of dealing with them.
Still, she couldn't resist a few little digs at the man, and leaned in with a slight smirk. "The thing is, you're already working for me, and you've already helped me. A little too late to back out now, don't you think?"
She barked out a laugh at his next remark. "As you must have noticed by now," she said dryly, indicating the quicksand she'd created, "That can be arranged. So I'd be careful what you wish for, if I were you." The sorceress shuddered at the thought of switching places with the ape-man. "Of course, if I were you, I wouldn't go around looking--or smelling--like that, either."
Once it was clear he'd conceded defeat, Narissa should have let herself take a moment to bask in the triumph. But something seemed unusual about his reaction to Edward's name. Did he know her stepson personally? The wheels started to turn in her mind, forming nasty little ideas as to how to verify their connection, and how to use it to her advantage. Those thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a movement near her feet. It seemed Tarzan was reaching for her--no, not her. The cauldron.
"Smarter than I gave you credit for." She muttered, scooping up the full cauldron. "But still incredibly stupid." Summoning up her magic, she pulled the man up from the muck and let him hang in midair. Narissa arched an eyebrow at him. "I know what you were trying to do. Nice try, but if you pull anything like that again, well..." The sorceress thought for a moment, and decided to take a chance. "Your friend Edward's going to get some very unpleasant news about just who that thief in his castle was."
Tarzan still reached for the relics even as Narissa pulled them aside and then pulled him from the sand trap with little effort, leaving him hanging in mid air. He took a few more attempts at a grab, thinking that she'd be hesitant to use her powers if he had a solid hold on her, only accomplishing a slight roll in the air since he didn't have any solid object to steady himself against. Narissa seemed unconcerned by his resistance and continued laying out her ultimatum.
"If I had known you were lying I wouldn't have agreed to help you in the first place."
Pretty much a laughable defense in this situation, especially to a villain of Narissa's character. Unfortunately for Tarzan he trusted others too easily, doubly so if they could put up a false front and make him believe that they meant well. The insults were also particularly stinging. Tarzan had yet to travel with Jane to the other Isles, partially due to having to hear taunts like that from other people.
Regardless of his feelings on the matter she had him baited, lured and caught. Worse yet she'd worked out that he knew Edward and decided to dangle that in front of him. Learning that lesson too late Tarzan tried to keep one expression for the rest of the conversation, grinding his teeth as he fumed. If he let anything else slip like, Jane, the Professor or the Gorillas back home to this witch he'd never forgive himself (moreso than he currently was).
"Fine, you win." He half snapped, half muttered to at least resist in some manner she couldn't undo. At least as far as he knew with how easily she was throwing magic around.
Narissa had to snicker at his feeble attempt to argue, despite the headache that was building due to her excessive use of her currently limited magic. She had him in the palm of her hand now, and he knew it. Nevertheless, she had to wrap things up quickly. Her magic still wasn't up to the strength it had been before, and she was using more than she ought to right now keeping Tarzan immobilized. Eventually, her power would fail her, and then he'd be able to overpower her and take her straight to Edward's dungeon.
"I'm done with you for now. You can go back to your little jungle friends until I need you again. I'll be keeping an eye on you, so if you try to tell anyone about our arrangement," She pushed him higher into the air, then let him fall for a moment before catching him with her magic once more. "I don't think I need to tell you that the consequences will be swift and severe."
She gritted her teeth as she concentrated her strength on opening a portal beneath Tarzan's feet, not particularly caring whether or not the man replied. The sorceress could feel all too well the strain of overusing her magic. The headache had worsened, and she was beginning to get dizzy. Before dropping him through the portal, she managed to force out one last sentence. "Until next time, then--and trust me, there'll be a next time."
After he'd disappeared, Narissa wasted no time in closing the portal. Gingerly, she set the cauldron down on the forest floor, leaving her hands free to massage her temples in an ineffectual attempt to soothe her growing headache. It was all worth it, she reminded herself. A little pain and a lot of energy in exchange for a new, highly useful minion and vital supplies wasn't a bad deal at all. Yes, it was all worth it.
Narissa repeated the statement in her head as she struggled to pick up the full cauldron and carry it back to her lair, wincing in pain and frustration all the while. Perhaps if she'd been a sharper mental state she would have been able to have Tarzan carry her things back to the cave for her, but that simply wasn't an option right now. In order to ensure that every other part of her plan went perfectly, something had to be sacrificed. She resolved to rest as soon as she was safely inside. After she'd had time to recharge, she could fully appreciate what she'd gained today. For now, however, all she could do was trudge towards her makeshift 'home', cursing Tarzan under her breath for having brought her such a heavy cauldron.
The portal Tarzan was dropped through provided a rougher ride than the last two, leaving him extra disorientated as it dropped him to the ground near the cliffs in the jungle. The apeman could make out the treehouse, the cleared area where the camp was and the trading post near the docks. All likely places where his friends and family were and he couldn't bear to face them.
Tarzan didn't know much about the laws of civilisation, but he understood freedom. He compared it to the feeling of swinging through the trees without a care as to where the next handgrip was going to be, leaving all your worries behind as the wind blew the weight of the world off your shoulders. Narissa had stolen that, she'd put a cage of her own making over him and he'd still be in it no matter how far he ran. No one else would see the cage but he could feel it pinning him. She could call him at any time and he'd have to obey.
Tarzan roared in anger, lifting a rock and hurling it from the clifftop, before slamming his fists into a nearby tree. For a few minutes he continued punching and yelling before he started to tire, hearing Narissa laugh the whole time. Afterwards he just collapsed to his knees, breathing short and sharp breaths. He swore to himself that he'd find a way out of this, learn something useful or watch Narissa for when she slipped up and he could hold something over her.
For now he would have to slink off home however. As he began to walk downhill he flinched slightly at the pain in his hands. Even through a lifetime of toughening he'd still hurt them bad during his anger. At least if he traveled slowly he'd be able to think of an alternate story to explain to everyone where he was all day.
