She had to be careful. Hades was a powerful god, a dangerous one. She knew that better than anyone. He might be arrogant and hot-headed, but he wasn't foolish. She had cloaked herself, wearing one of Hercules's old garments, dingy and dark. The black cloth fell around her, hood risen to cast shadows over her features. She needed to be seen by as little as possible. Hades probably knew of her attempts already, but she was being optimistic, and cautious.
She walked down the streets of Londontown, quiet and steady and never stopping to chat with anyone that offered her a friendly remark. She didn't mind seeming cold and odd. She wasn't here to make new friends, she had enough as it was. Megara was here to meet with him.
She couldn't remember where exactly she'd heard of the great detective, but she knew where to find him and that's all that really mattered. If he could help her in any way, she would be grateful. She'd brought a satchel of gold and other such things in means of payment, but she wasn't entirely sure what his aid might cost.
She'd just have to ask him. Meg was only a few streets away now, glancing at the signs on each corner to make sure she was going the right way. Baker Street was just ahead, she was positive. She had the directions written down on her arm, scribbled in ink quickly and sloppily. For the hundredth time that night, she pulled her arm up into the dim light of a streetlamp to check herself.
Just ahead, she could see the numbers nailed above the door. Taking the steps up one at a time, she looked into a side window awkwardly before knocking on the door three times in rapid succession. It took a few minutes, and some mumbling from behind the structure, but the door finally opened to reveal a stout man with glasses hanging on the brim of his nose. "What do you want at such an hour?"
Meg didn't flinch at his blunt tone or solid glare, but unhooded herself so that he could see her. "I'm looking for Basil, the detective?" The man gave her most peculiar of looks before stating shortly, "There is no such detective her, goodnight," and then he closed the door and waddled off back into his house.
Megara checked her arm yet again, sure that this was the right address, and yet doubting her decision to come here entirely. Was the stout man with glasses Basil himself? Was Basil simply in a sour mood tonight? She reached forward to knock again when she heard the faintest of voices. She looked about, suspicious and weary. Deciding it best to depart, she made for the stairs and had just reached the last step when she heard it again, clearer this time but not altogether audible.

Underneath 221 Baker Street, where Megaras interest actually lay, was Basil flat. Mrs Judson the landlady burst into the detectives living space, shocked to find all the furniture pushed aside and a metal drum in the centre of the room, a muttering coming from inside. Tutting at the mess caused by her tenants latest experiment she picked up an umberella and started banging on the drum, causing an angry (and for some reason chained up) Basil to burst out.
"Good lord Mrs Judson. I hope you have a reason for this abuse."
"and I hope you have a good reason for...what are you doing exactly?"
"Escapology training." Basil stepped out of the drum and started hopping across the room in his restrains, grabbing a pencil in his teeth to make a note on his progress. "Given the work I've been doing in the Americas it would be wise to prepare for execution methods used by mafia groups, namely drowning. Once Dawson gets back with the cement I can really get to work.."
"No time for that, a lady was upstairs looking for you. Must have mistaken the address with those two upstairs."
"Well show her in."
"I'm your landlady, not your maid. and it's not the kind of guest you can bring indoors. Go find her yourself before she leaves."
Basil grumbled as he resumed hopping towards the door, which Judson kindly opened for him. He was forever having mixups with 'those two upstairs'. They had recently been off to Switzerland or somewhere and only one of them had came back, then spent the week moping around the flat about something or other. Bad enough that the tall one copied Basils dress sense but he could at least spend more time with the shorter one. On reaching the outside Basil looked around, catching a glimpse of a female figure covering herself in a cloak making her way down the steps. Basil tried to intercept before she left.
"Down here young lady!"
His chained hopping became more frantic as he tried to catch up, losing his balance a few times before he managed to get in front of her. She was looking around confused, apparently having heard him. It didn't pass through his head even once how he'd be making an odd first impression while still trying to get loose from his experiment. Nor that the young lady didn't know what kind of individual she was going to find when she came to Baker Street looking for Basil.
"Keep looking down, right in front of you." He bowed, barely keeping his balance with his arms pinned. "Basil of Baker Street. I believe you're looking for me?"
The voice didn't go away, which was a good thing, because she almost stepped on the little creature scurrying in front of her. Megara looked down just in time to miss the small mouse, her foot catching, making her stumble backwards slightly and fall against the stairs that she'd just descended from. Even though the animal had give her a start, she kept silent. A few steadying breaths later and she was taking a closer look.
At first glance, it seemed that the mouse was as normal as any other. It wasn't all that surprising, to find a mouse running through the streets of London. But on further examination, Meg decided that this was no ordinary mouse. Not in the slightest. The strange constraints that were only half wrapped around him now gave way to formal clothing, much like that of the burly fellow she'd just been turned down by.
From this distance, Meg realized that it was the mouse which had spoken up. Not the most unusual thing in the world, but she hadn't been expecting it. At his second outburst, which Megara could understand quite clearly now, she had to rethink her whole plan.
Basil of Baker Street. She'd never thought to ask what species this Basil was, nor did she think that any talking mouse would live on Baker Street. She was suspicious, doubtful as she set there and studied the mouse carefully. He was mostly out of his contraption now, looking back and forth between his still entrapped feet and his company.
"You're Basil?" Meg looked from the poor little creature to the street sign just beyond him. "Of Baker Street?"

Finally wiggling free from his experiment Basil let the chains clatter to the ground before continuing his introduction. It seemed he'd given the woman somewhat of a shock, causing her to fall against the steps, thankfully not doing any injury to herself. She seemed unsure of the detective for some reason.
"Sorry about that. Let me help." The mouse took her by the hand and made some effort to help her stand, pointless given the height difference but it was still the gentlemanly action. "Yes, I'm Basil. Detective and Agent of the Crown. At your service."
He gave the young lady a once over, studying her appearance to determine what he could. Greco roman style clothing, with a dark cloak, ink smudged on her arm, slight shiver and despite her confusion a strong demeanour with a hint of desparation. This would get the idle chit chat out of the way and cut straight to the important information. Plus it was his first human client directly seeking him out at home, discounting the Princess Aurora but she contacted him via magic.
"You're from the Ambrosia kingdom. You're fiercely independant but you've come into some trouble requiring outside help that you've sought out reluctantly. Given the cloak, you wish to travel anonymously so this trouble may follow or keep observation on you. This is your first visit to London so you aren't used to the English weather. The directions on your arm have been hastily wiped and reapplied several times so you've travelled in a hurry and checked your progess thoroughly from several absentminded people. You've only heard of me by reputation hence your shock and confusion....also I'm getting a hint of dissapointment at something?"
This performance of deductive reasoning by observation was always a risk. Most clients were impressed but the occasional few took offense at something the detective would comment on. Very rarely though.
"Shall we continue in the cafe at the corner? A warm drink would do you good after your travels."
How could a mouse ever help her defeat Hades? How could a man ever help her defeat Hades? She shook her head slightly, confused and tired from the journey. She needed to be strong, like always. Megara didn't need to defeat Hades, she just needed a way out of a contract. Maybe what she really needed was a lawyer, not a detective. Still, she'd come all this way to find Basil of Baker Street. What good would it do her if she gave up on him because of his mousy appearance, fragile size, and accusing tone?
He was a gentle-mouse, at least. Even if his attempt to help her did little to nothing, it was the gesture that mattered. She rose to her feet as he gave his final tug, crouching down as if it would somehow make accepting him easier. Or maybe she was just trying to be polite, which was unlikely.
Meg kept her eyes on him as he spoke out again, ranting on at a pace that was almost too quick for her to keep up with. Everything he said was true, and she wasn't all that surprised. Even if he was a mouse, he was still well known and respected. At least in some parts of the world. She gave the ink on her arm a quick glance as he mentioned it, pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders as he brought up London's weather, and when he finally ended his list of observations, she let out her breath.
"Um," she looked around, as if someone would come and explain to her just who this little mouse was and how he'd be able to help her. No one came. "Sure." She gave a shrug of her shoulders, rising to full height and stepping around the mouse carefully. Should she offer to carry the little guy?
Something told her that he was a little too prideful for something like that. Or maybe she just didn't want to have a mouse, no matter how well-dressed he was, in the palm of her hand. "Lead the way?"

As the detective had said, the cafe was just at the corner of Baker Street. The owner was fond of Basil after the mouse had saved him from the gallows in an extraordinary case of mistaken identity, intrigue and conspiracy that would require a real writer to recap. After that it had become a good place for Basil to meet with larger clients that he couldn't invite into the flat. On entering the establishment greetings were exchanged and the detective and client were given a table tucked away in the far corner to discuss the case in private.
Basil scurried up the table leg and took a set on a matchbox, rather than take an actual chair and have to do the whole interview from a low angle. Tea was brought out for the two of them, the mouse inviting his potential client to order whatever else she wanted. He did notice her expressions suggesting that she had second thoughts about the whole thing. Maybe his reputation and species were clashing against each other. Frustrating but understandable, he'd just have to prove himself by his actions rather than get prematurely angry. Save the anger for the people who actually put down his ability based on his size. Though it was somewhat disheartening when she looked around like she was the victim of a joke, or was expecting the 'real' Basil to come out of hiding.
"So." The detective pulled a notepad and pencil from his pocket. "Tell me your situation, omit nothing. Devil in the details and all. Also, I don't think I got your name. Could we start there?"
Admittedly he had overlooked that part of the introductions. Mostly due to his enthusiasm to get to work with a new client. Some things like names couldn't be worked out by observation sadly.
"Just around the corner" wasn't as near as one might assume. Or maybe it was. The mouse scurried at an admirable pace, but his legs were small and he seemed to prefer using two, rather than four. It made the small journey take longer then it could have, but she'd gotten out of carrying a rodent, so she didn't complain. Her steps, much larger than Basil's own, were much fewer. The cafe happened to be literally right around the corner, which shouldn't have been all that surprising. He was a detective, after all. Exaggerating wouldn't do them much good, would it?
Meg followed along, always slightly behind the mouse, in silence. She was still trying to figure out how Basil planned on interacting with her openly in a cafe. Most "restaurants" that she'd been to since leaving Ambrosia didn't much care for rats or mice or any other sort of pest. Not that she was calling Basil a pest, necessarily. He had already demonstrated wits and observations far beyond the ability of any normal mouse. His spirit and mind were strong, she could tell, though it was unfortunate, the shape that he took. Or maybe it wasn't. Small and nimble, he could get places that most others couldn't, run about without being paid much mind.
When they finally reached the cafe, Megara was honestly surprised to see Basil simply walk in and ask for a table. The man behind the counter was thrilled at the notion, or so it seemed, and even gave the creature the table that he directly asked for. Was this a usual thing, for the people in London?
Taking a seat opposite of the detective, Meg nodded in agreement at the tea, but declined ordering anything else. Her stomach was already unsettled as it was. Looking down at Basil, she waited in silence until he broke it, prodding for information that had yet to be given. "My name is Megara." Maybe he'd heard of her? Darling of the fierce and powerful Hercules? Not that she approved of the title. She continued on before he could comment. "I'm sure you've heard of Hercules? His run with Hades? The loss of the girl he loved, along with the redemption."
She pointed a finger at herself with a dry smile, watching as the waiter laid out their tea, honey and sugar in front of them. "That's me." Meg busied her hands with the motion of pouring in honey and sugar. "Hercules dealt with Hades, and broke me from a contract that I'd signed." Now her spoon was scraping against the sides of her cup rhythmically as she stirred. "Throughout a series of unfortunate events, including me dying, Hercules made a deal with Hades himself." Her voice was low, but she was certain that the mouse-detective could hear her. She didn't like retelling this tale.
"A soul for a soul, that was the bargain. But when Hercules was declared a true hero, and god, by the Olympians, his soul couldn't be bartered. Which broke the deal." Her eyes were glazed over now, as she relived the night that Hades came to her, not so long ago. "I'm not really sure how, because all of the immortal, god-like business has never really clicked for me, but Hades found his way back."
She sipped at her tea, thankful for the warmth more than anything. "And now he claims that I'm still bound to him, due to the failure of completing our end of the deal." She trailed off here, waiting for Basil to break in somewhere, to tell her something just a little optimistic. To tell her that he knew exactly what to do and who to talk to. Was that really too much to ask for?

"Hercules and you are Megara? I've heard of him. Though it was mythology before the formation of the Isles. It's interesting to meet a literally legendary individual if you don't mind me saying."
Basil didn't see any point in bringing up how badly that relationship had ended in the actual Greek myth of Hercules, that he was driven mad by the Gods and lost Megara before performing his Twelve Labours to find redemption. Fortunately things had apparently worked better for this young lady, aside from the problem she had come to the detective for.
Basil was indeed curious about this affair. A contract with Hades, Greek God of the underworld and apparently not too friendly a character. Immortal, Godlike and presumably invulnerable to some extent. Basil took notes as Megara described the events leading up to her, entrapment? slavery? Still, from what he could understood Hades was relying on a series of rules and terms to enforce his control over his victims. It could be the key to catching him out. If his inability to hold Hercules was enough to void a contract then there may be other loopholes.
"So from what I can tell there are at least two contracts between the three of you. The one that initially bound your service to Hades and the one Hercules used to free you. Can you tell me the exact terms of each? Wording, terms, any unusual circumstances that made the deal better or worse for either party? If Hades is holding the two of you to your words and actions then he'll have to be held by the same standards."
Basil considered this somewhat foolproof. If a villain had his own code of honour then it was worth using to gain an advantage over him. Though it was unnerving that a villain, one who may have been in the Forever Stone, was in charge of the afterlife to some extent. This might even require a trip over to the Ambrosia Isle to investigate further.
