The young Prince Edward had been in lessons all day and he was starting to get bored. Yes, history was apparently something that he was going to need if he was ever to become King, but did his tutor have to make everything sound dusty and dry and boring? When his Papa had been alive, he'd told Edward stories of the history of Andalasia, and they were always exciting.
Edward was just about to pipe up, voicing this complaint, when his history tutor declared that that was all for the day and that it was time for his music lessons.
The boy perked up at this; he loved music classes almost as much as he loved learning about sword-fighting and horses. He was hard-pressed to contain his excitement when his music tutor came into the room, carrying several different instruments, as well as a quite hefty book of music.
"Today, Prince Edward, we are going to learn the art of song," the tutor proclaimed, setting his tools down. "In this kingdom, it is a common practice to sing what one is feeling, and as a prince of the realm, you need to hone your skills. We shall all be very disappointed if you don't turn out a lovely voice."
With a very serious expression on his young face, the Prince nodded. He wasn't quite certain what his tutor was going on about, but if it meant there would be music, he didn't really need to know.
"When you feel emotions particularly strongly, you'll feel the urge to sing. We're going to show you how to channel that urge."
The Prince nodded; he'd already felt the urge to sing several times, but he hadn't known what to do with it. Apparently, he was finally going to learn something useful.
As the lesson wore on, Edward learned more and more about how to channel the songs within. Music was his final lesson of the day, and as soon as it was over, he raced to find his step-mother, excited to show her what he'd learned.
"I've been learning how to sing all day! So I came here and just had to say: I love music and I want to sing forever!"

((OOC: The singing part is to "True Love's Kiss." Because I'm unoriginal.))
It hadn't been a particularly stellar day for Narissa. The trolls were getting restless again, now that they had begun to realize that she wasn't going to deliver on her end of their bargain, and they would take a lot of convincing if she wanted to avoid an all-out war. And there were trade negotiations with other kingdoms to take care of, not to mention complaints from the kitchen staff that she'd spent the last hour listening to in the throne room. It was all giving the monarch a migraine just thinking about it.
Edward's singing, however lovely his voice was--and it was, admittedly, very lovely--did nothing to help Narissa's growing headache. She tried not to wince as he burst into the room, and quickly turned her grimace into a smile, leaning back on her throne.
"That's very nice, dear. Be careful not to wear out your voice... We wouldn't want that."
The desire to sing was something Narissa hadn't felt since first meeting the King, and something she had rarely felt before then. She wasn't sure why that was so or what it meant, but she knew it couldn't be a good thing. Something cold settled in the pit of her stomach. Her mind raced to find another subject, something to distract her from this awful feeling stealing its way into her heart.
Narissa stood, picking her way down from the throne on the raised dais to come closer to the boy.
"Since you seem to like singing so much, perhaps you should take up an instrument or two as well. I could hire a separate tutor for whichever instruments you choose so you can get more music lessons..." Make sure Edward stays busy, she told herself, that was important to do. She had to find ways to keep her stepson's mind occupied, or he might begin to notice things he shouldn't.
Even though Edward wasn't any sort of genius, he also wasn't stupid. He noticed the way Narissa's expression changed when he burst in, her barely-concealed grimace that she turned into a smile at his song. But he also knew that when she sat that particular way, it meant that she had a headache. And if that was the case, it was no WONDER she had winced when he burst in so loudly!
"Sorry," he whispered, making sure that his voice was as low-pitched as he could make it (considering that it hadn't quite dropped yet, that was more difficult than it would be later on), "I'll be quieter." At least, he hoped that that was the only thing that was wrong. If it wasn't, well, something was upsetting Narissa. And he would need to find out what that was and slay it!
But at her words about taking up an instrument, the young Prince's face lit up. He'd always wanted to be able to learn how to play the guitar, at least, and if there were other ways of making music, that would be wonderful.
"I would like that very much," he said, forcing himself to continue to speak quietly and to remain dignified. It wasn't seemly for a Prince to jump up and down with excitement, especially when his stepmother was dealing with a headache.
He frowned at the thought, hoping again that that was all it was. But since he couldn't be sure, he was going to ask. After all, he couldn't exactly slay whatever it was that had upset Narissa if he didn't know what it was, now, could he?
"Mother...., did something happen that has upset you?" he asked, the concern he felt clear in his young face. After all, she was the only mother-figure he'd ever really known.
Narissa's expression softened. "Thank you, Edward." Her stepson may have had a way of getting on her nerves from time to time with his seemingly boundless enthusiasm, but he was a good boy. Kind-hearted. Smart enough to pick up on Narissa's mood and act accordingly, but not smart enough to think of or ask inconvenient questions, probably due in part to the aforementioned enthusiasm he possessed in spades. She hoped he'd stay that way--not out of a sense of nostalgia or love, really, but self-preservation. She needed him to stay compliant, obedient, or else one day he might ask her to step down from the throne, and she would never be ready for that day to come.
But for now, Edward was a sweet, blessedly naive boy. And he was trying so hard to be a good son and a good prince. It was almost comical to see him stop himself from bouncing off the walls in excitement. She quirked a brow in amusement. "Well then, I'll let you choose the instrument--or instruments, if you can't decide on just one--and I'm sure we can find you a tutor in a matter of days."
The smile and amusement faded at Edward's question. Was he picking up on her fears, she wondered, or was it merely that her headache and fatigue were showing a bit too clearly? She opted to interpret his concern as involving the latter, and knelt gracefully to cup his chin with one hand. "It's been a trying day, darling, and I'm in need of a rest, that's all. As the saying goes, 'a woman's work is never done'." She smiled again, moving her hand up to ruffle his hair slightly.
Thankfully, it seemed that the only thing that was bothering his stepmother was that she'd had a busy day; he wouldn't have to slay anything after all. Which, even though he wouldn't admit this to anyone other than himself, was probably a good thing. Prince though he was, he wasn't yet experienced enough to go about properly slaying things. He was still taking lessons for that. But the day would come when he would be able to slay just about anything he wanted, and with ease!
His stepmother was waiting for an answer on what instrument he wanted to study, though, and he'd kept her waiting, a very rude thing to do.
"I should like to study the guitar, Mother," he said in his most grown-up (if still quiet) voice. "And..., maybe some others, if I can decide on another instrument?" he added hopefully. She'd already said he could study more than one, but he wasn't sure what other he wanted to choose! There were so many from which he had to decide, after all.
He withstood the hair-ruffling with a stoic expression; even though he was a prince, he was still a young one, and he had such lovely hair. Ruffling came with the territory, at the moment, and he would suffer in silence until he became too old to be ruffled.
"I shall instruct the cooks to start dinner!" he declared, confident in his decision. But then he looked to Narissa uncertainly. "That is, if that's what you'd like?" He was just trying to make things easier for his stepmother, after all.
Narissa nodded her agreement at his suggestion. "I'll let your singing tutor know. See if he can recommend someone to teach you guitar, if he can't do it himself. Perhaps he can help you choose a second instrument, as well."
Guitar lessons would provide another perfect distraction for Edward for the moment. As for when he grew older and keeping his mind off stepping into his father's shoes would prove more difficult, well, Narissa still had time to come up with something more. Though it seemed the young prince was determined to grow up soon, judging by his tone and posture.
She hoped the time wouldn't pass by as quickly as she'd been told it would. Not because she wanted to appreciate each moment of Edward's youth, of course, but because for all his irritating childish mannerisms and habits, he was still so easy to deal with at this age. So easily placated. She wasn't looking forward to dealing with an older, smarter boy, even though his upbringing was and would continue to be carefully directed towards quelling any traits that might make him a threat to her reign.
There was a delicate balance to be struck--Edward ought to be independent enough not to get in the way of her own business, but not so independent as to question her or otherwise prompt disobedience. It was there now, yes, but how long could it be kept up? Her own childhood had been a tumultuous one, and raising a child hadn't been something she'd really thought about until she'd suddenly been thrust into the position of stepmother. Narissa wondered, briefly, if she would have let her husband live at least a little while longer if she'd realized then that his death would leave Edward in her care alone.
But it didn't matter now, and anyway, Edward was waiting for her response. "Not yet, Edward, but thank you. For now I think I'd just like to take a break..." She stood, extending a hand to her stepson as an idea struck. "Perhaps we could take a little walk in the gardens, you and I. I could certainly use the fresh air. And you can tell me all about your singing lesson. How does that sound?"
