"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Feb 1, 2015 22:22:58 GMT -5
The large Gargoyle gazed out over the city of Manhattan, his protectorate. At one point, he had simply consider the castle on whose ramparts he now stood to be his protectorate, but he had come to see that it was the city that truly needed him, that needed his clan.
He had sent the others out on patrol tonight, the way he usually did, but he had stayed behind, observing the city. There was so much that was wrong in Manhattan, but he hoped that his clan was doing something to help, how matter little their help might mean.
Without turning around, Goliath could tell that there was someone standing behind him. After all, he'd been trained since he'd hatched to be a warrior; it would have been a poor reflection on both his mentor and himself if he could no longer tell when there was someone behind him. And not just any someone. Unless he was very much mistaken, it was Angela who was lurking in the door way. His daughter.
True, it was deviating from the Gargoyle Way to think of her as his daughter, but none of his Rookery brothers and sisters were left alive, that she could belong to the whole clan. And, after that night, when he'd almost lost her....well, he understood the bond between human parents and children much more, now.
"Did you set out on patrol and return or have you simply not left?" he asked, his question deep and rumbling as he turned to face his child.

((OOC: Let me know if this is okay! And forgive the awful title; I couldn't think of anything else!))
That was not unusual for Angela lately, and she did not dislike change in concept. On the contrary; so much of her life had been centered on a single isle, protected from the rest of the world, where nothing of import tended to happen. She had been more than ready to leave home when the opportunity came. And now it seemed as though the world were only expanding. All of this was exciting to her, and Angela didn't resent it at all.
But there were other changes happening, closer to home. And those, the young Gargoyle was very concerned about.
When she and the others had been sent out, Angela had quickly offered to split up, claiming that she had forgotten there was something she needed to do, back at the castle. But in truth, she had hoped to catch Goliath alone. He had...seemed tense lately, and Elisa had as well. She had gotten to know them too well in the close quarters of the skiff to miss this tension. It probably was not her place to interfere...but Angela cared for Elisa as much as any other member of her clan. If there was something she could do to help...
As soon as Goliath acknowledged her, Angela stepped out of the doorway, one hand resting on her other elbow. She shook her head in response to his question.
"I split off from the others not far from the castle," she confessed. Angela crossed to the rampart, letting go of her arm to lean both hands against a parapet beside her father. She turned her head to catch his eye.
"Actually, I wanted to talk to you. Has everything been...alright? Lately, you have seemed...tense."

Even as Angela stepped towards him, Goliath's mind was racing. Had she heard the conversation that had happened between himself and Elisa recently, the words they'd exchanged? Some of them had been rather harsher than either of them had meant, at the time, but they had still been said. By this point, they'd forgiven each other, but the whole issue still remained.
It seemed that Angela had returned to the castle, with the intention of talking to him about his recent tension. He would have been a fool not to expect her to notice; Angela was an intelligent woman, and she'd spent several months in close quarters with both Elisa and himself. Of course she had noticed something.
He relaxed slightly when she spoke; at least she hadn't heard their argument, then. Though why it should matter so deeply that she not see them fighting, even Goliath wasn't sure. He tried to hold himself above such petty things as arguments, but with a temper like his, they happened more often than he cared to admit.
"Tense" was rather an understatement for what he was feeling; he was contemplating changing everything, and that was a huge step. He was willing to take it, but he could understand that the others might not quite see it the same way.
"Elisa and I ....," he started with a sigh, turning fully to face Angela, "Elisa and I ... care for one another very much," he tried again. "But she is a human and I am a Gargoyle. It makes things ... difficult." It was simplifying the issue, but he was having trouble finding the words. There was so much more to everything than that, and yet, that was the problem that they were having, in its simplest form.
((OOC: Let me know if I need to change anything! And silly Goliath is having trouble saying the word "love." XD))
Goliath seemed even tenser to see her here; that only reinforced Angela's impression that something was wrong. Trying to seem less...confrontational, Angela was careful to watch Goliath out of the corner of her eye until he relaxed. Angela hated the idea that Goliath might keep things from her, but she understood that some things did have to be thought through on one's own first. And this probably was not about her directly. She simply wished her father would rely on her a little more, sometimes, when he seemed to be having difficulty.
So it really was about Elisa, though. Not as if that were a secret; anyone could have seen how uncomfortable they were lately. Just as anyone could see how much they cared for each other. That wasn't new information to Angela. She never could have spent as long with them as she had and not noticed. Frankly, Angela was more surprised Goliath seemed to think it was new information. She frowned softly, confused by Goliath's explanation.
"I do not understand why it makes it difficult," she admitted. So what if Elisa was human? What did that change, honestly? "Myself and my rookery brothers and sisters were raised by humans. We are clan with them, too, are we not?" Angela frowned, turning her face towards her father. "Is Elisa not already clan with us?"

Angela's words weren't exactly surprising. She had been raised by humans; she had a better opinion of humans than any Gargoyle Goliath had ever known. And with her background, it made sense. When he had known the Princess Katherine, she had hated and feared Gargoyles. If one person could change her mind so completely about something, perhaps all hope was not lost for him after all.
"Yes, humans can be part of the clan, and they are," he agreed, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly as he considered his next words. "But with Elisa and myself....., it is different than your Princess Katherine, Angela." Katherine had been human, yes, and she had raised the Gargoyle eggs as if they were her own flesh and blood, but she'd had a human man by her side when she'd done it.
There hadn't been anything to complicate her relationship with the Gargoyles. But Goliath's relationship with Elisa, as simple as it was that she was part of the clan, presented more problems. Elisa wanted things that Goliath could never give her, if she wanted any kind of a normal life.
Goliath turned from his daughter to gaze over their city, a troubled frown on his face as he spoke once more. "Elisa wants marriage, she wants children. Things that I will never be able to provide," his voice was a soft rumble of thunder and he continued to look at the city rather than at Angela. He didn't want her to know just how much this subject pained him.
