So far, under the new way of the world, Basil had acted as a detective, tour guide, escort, courier, tutor, explorer and ambassador. Today he was called upon to teach another in the skills required for undercover work.
Alice Liddell, the young girl who had saved Basil from a deathtrap constructed in the fireplace of her home, had written to the mouse recently asking to meet with him for some advice regarding an upcoming venture of her own. As she had told him when they first met she'd been to both Arendelle and an unusual location she called Wonderland via means that she didn't exactly know how to reproduce. So apparently she wanted to be prepared in case she suddenly wound up in a hostile land and needed to hide herself from individuals like the Queen of Hearts, who apparently bore ill feelings with the child over a croquet game of all things and intended to carry out a beheading with nothing even resembling a fair trial.
In response Basil had sent a reply, in human sized mail which required most of the furniture of his flat to be shuffled aside. Alice was to meet him at the same toy shop that Ratigan had used to pilfer disguises for his infiltration of the Royal Guard and attempted coup of the kingdom. The store had an impressive fancy dress and novelty items stock and hopefully they could find something, or several somethings, that could allow her to travel incognito. If Basil knew anything, and he knew a great many things, he knew how to construct a good disguise. Unfortunately he hadn't crafted one for himself to demonstrate, reasoning that Alice probably didn't have time to waste trying to spot him in one of his designed down to the last detail aliases.
Right now Basil was waiting with his ever faithful hound Toby on the streets just outside the storefront, the dog had managed to plant himself comfortably but the detective had spent the last few minutes dodging human foot traffic before finding safety on the window ledge. At least this time he'd be visiting the store during regular business hours and wouldn't have to worry about Fidget ambushing him with marbles, toy soldiers, wind up toys and massive dolls.

Last Edit: Feb 2, 2015 13:50:41 GMT -5 by Basil of Baker Street: Needed more Basil ego.
A child going to a toy store was a normal thing, but Alice wasn't a normal child, and she wasn't there for normal reasons. When she'd decided to return to Wonderland, she realized she'd need a disguise to be able to explore without being recognized by the Queen of Hearts or those who were loyal to her. And who better to help with that than a detective, like her new acquaintance Basil? She was glad to hear that he was willing to help, and delighted when he suggested they meet at the toy shop. It had been a while since she'd been to a new one, and she was looking forward to seeing the items on display.
After looking through the shop's windows for a while to see what wonders awaited her, Alice turned toward Basil and Toby. "Hello again, Mr. Basil," she said cheerfully. "I hope my request isn't too much trouble for you. With all the mysterious things that have been happening, you must be very busy!" She didn't at first consider the fact that doors appearing and disappearing from nowhere, and a headless horseman rampaging through the jungle, were probably mysteries of a very different sort than the kind a private detective would solve. Looking back into the toy shop, she tilted her head. "I wouldn't have thought this would be the sort of place to find a disguise that would really fool people. But from the story you told me, it must be." The disguises he mentioned had been on a smaller scale... but then, so was Wonderland.

"Good to see you Miss Liddell." Basil bowed. "and no, no, not at all. Always a pleasure to educate another in the skills of the trade. I don't think you've met Toby?"
Toby waddled forwards, standing up on his hind legs and letting his tongue hang out before dropping onto his back, apparently having trouble deciding whether he wanted his ears scratched or his belly rubbed. While a loyal companion, transport and tracker he did have the unusual habit of latching onto any newcomers and ignoring Basil until he was all tired out from playing. This time the mouse held back from scolding him in order to address Alice's concerns.
"Oh yes. This establishment has provided an impressive selection of disguise material in the past for persons of my size. However with the formation of the Isles and new opportunities for import the owner has decided to experiment in branching out into the fancy dress and novelty items market so we can hopefully put together a suitable ensemble for yourself. Shall we?"
Basil dropped down to street level and made for the shop door, pushing against it with some difficulty before Toby assisted. Once inside he led the young girl and the hound over to a far corner of the building with a rack of various kinds of clothing, shelves of stage make up and various fake hairpieces for the face and head.
"So, did you have an alias planned already?" Basil asked as he climbed up a table and stared at a pair of Groucho Marx glasses. "A fake identity that we could build around perhaps?"
A backstory was just as important as the physical part of the disguise. Basil would have to train Alice in rapid fire answers to questions she might be asked by Wonderlands residents, maybe even accent or dialect training. Then if he could avoid Mrs Judson he could fill up the bath with enough photo developing fluid to make her a full sized series of papers for her fake identity. Perhaps he was a little too excited to be training another in his line of work.
Alice had not, in fact, met Toby, and it took her a little while to realize that a talking mouse was apparently keeping a non-talking dog as a pet. She had to sort this out in her brain for a while, but concluded that it really wasn't so strange after all, as she already knew that talking animals and non-talking ones existed- if a human like herself could keep a cat for a pet, why couldn't a talking mouse have a dog?
Bending down to give the dog a smile of greeting, she looked back to Basil, listening carefully to him. So, originally, the toy store sold clothes for mouse-sized customers? "Oh, of course. Where else would one go for such small outfits?" she noted, now making the connection. It wasn't really that much of a leap from doll clothes, to clothes for small animals, and then to outfits for humans... was it?
Following behind Basil, she entered the shop and looked around. It looked about the same as other toy shops she'd been to- but clearly, the costume section was much more extensive in its selection. Basil seemed to be taking this idea very seriously, especially as he started asking her about building an identity. "I hadn't really thought that much about it," she said. "Mostly I was just thinking I shouldn't look like myself. But creating a whole new identity... well, that sounds like it could be fun! But, what sort of person should I be? After all, Wonderland seems to be the kind of place where anything could happen." Perhaps just the simple act of not being herself would allow her to fit in better; after all, as she'd imagined it, it was the kind of place where "nothing was what it was, because everything was what it wasn't."

"Well, we have shops our size too. Just some specialty items are a little hard to come by. Not many tailors stock such items as a...." He looked around the clothing racks "Seventeenth century privateer clothing."
Basil's thoughts drifted to his meeting with Chip of the Rescue Rangers, who apparently lived without the benefit of Mousedom's niceties and converted what he and his friends needed from human items. Furniture, tools and even vehicles. With the formation of the Isles they could at least visit London and stock up on properly proportioned furnishings.
Alice apparently didn't have a specific disguise in mind, leaving them free to experiment and find the perfect one. Basil gathered a few items from around the table and motioned Alice over to try them in front of the mirror. The detective handed her a bushy false moustache, a pair of glasses and a safari style pith helmet.
"Now these could work, the hat covers your hair and these obscure your face. With the right vocal coaching you could go unnoticed. Please, try them out."
Disguises were trial and error depending on the agenda behind them. You needed anonymity to be sure, but you also needed to attract or repel others as needed. When attracting people you needed a disguise that fit in with the crowd you intended to infiltrate, and a persona that would endear them. If you wanted to avoid attention you could try something to irritate or disgust others in your disguise, like unsightly features or annoying habits. From what Basil could tell Alice might need a little of both, enough to occasionally converse with the inhabitants of Wonderland but not enough for them to focus on her recognisable details.
"Goodbye Alice Liddell, hello Reginald Smallman, gentleman explorer."
Well, of course they had their own shops. She didn't think it'd be very practical for mice and other such tiny beings to have to patronize human-owned stores for their every need. On the other hand, she hadn't run into any shops in Wonderland... which just made her think there must be more connections to other places from there. Most of Wonderland's residents didn't really seem like the self-sufficient types...
Eventually, Basil handed her some items, which she looked over curiously before trying them on- she couldn't help but laugh at the sight of herself. A young girl with a bushy mustache and an explorer's helmet? "I don't know, Mr. Basil, this might be too different," she said, returning the items to Basil. "Let's try something else. Something more... natural." She didn't want to get too far out of her personal experience with this sort of thing, and she hadn't really had much of an opportunity to get to know any gentleman explorers very well- certainly not well enough to know how to act like one. And such a role might result in more trouble than it was worth- an explorer might be expected to meet with the leaders of the land being explored, which was exactly what she wanted to avoid. ...of course, acting like a grown man would also be difficult for Alice.

Basil looked a little put out as his idea was rejected, but soon lightened up and resumed rummaging for new items and ideas as he assured himself that it wasn't too big a deal.
"Yes, of course. Hardly a first time disguise. Perhaps we should look into something that fits with your own talents and skills. Eureka!"
Basil dove into a hamper full of fancy dress pieces, digging his way to the bottom in a search for the appropriate items. Toby sniffed at the hamper, following the mouse on his path up, down and around in an erratic and seemingly random way.
When they'd first met at Alice's home and she'd told him of her adventures in Wonderland, the young girl had clarified everything with a series of pictures she had drawn citing that the best stories needed pictures. The detective had to admit that, despite the unusual, whimsical and sometimes nonsensical subject matter, she had a good talent behind her artwork. Her talent would certainly benefit her in his next idea for her disguise. Toby pressed his ear against the basket as he heard a muffled exclamation of success, just before Basil crawled out with his findings. He laid out a white smock, a black beret, a thin paintbrush and a palette. Each had pain marks on them to give the wearer more of the look of a busy artist.
"Perhaps with your talent that you displayed in your drawings the travelling artist would be a good alias for you. As a bonus you could even record images that could serve as valuable reconnaissance and no one would be the wiser as you worked."
Basil invited Alice to test this ensemble, hopefully finding it to her liking. His mind wandered to what the next step should be, perhaps accent coaching...or memorising a backstory...
ooc: Hope this is okay, feel free to reject it if you have other ideas in mind. Or you could pick out multiple disguises. XD
Alice watched as Basil resumed his search, trying to think of some possibilities of her own. She could go simple... maybe just make herself look like one of her friends. It wouldn't be too difficult to think like one of them, would it? But then, maybe that would be a bit too easy to see through. Anyone who was on the lookout for a little English girl wouldn't exactly overlook a different little English girl. So maybe she would have to look a little further from home. Would she have to give herself over to Wonderland's brand of oddness to escape suspicion?
Basil emerged with an artist's outfit, which Alice looked over with some interest. "Oh yes, that might do nicely," she commented, appreciating the detail that went into it. "Many people tend to leave artists alone while they're working, which might come in handy. ...Though, I don't know if things will be the same in Wonderland." Common sense didn't always apply there, after all. As she considered what she'd learned from her journey and how she might make things easier for herself, she looked towards Basil once again, then looked at him a bit more closely.
"Now, here's a thought," she said, clearly trying to work out if it was a good idea while she was in the middle of suggesting it. "Wonderland does have many talking animals like yourself. And if it goes the same way as last time, I'll have to shrink down to... about your size to get inside. I wonder, would it be possible to disguise myself as a mouse, like you? I'd certainly end up looking very different from myself that way." Ordinarily, she wouldn't think it was possible to make something like that convincing... but at this point it was hard to think anything was truly impossible.

Well the artist disguise had apparently been received well, leaving Basil a little more proud of himself for his successful choice based on Alice's personality. He did note that she seemed a little unsure, citing the unusual nature of Wonderland and its denizens. Admittedly Basil was curious, but unsure if he ever wanted to visit such a location given what Alice had told him previously.
Next the young girl asked for some tutoring in how to look like a mouse, in case she ended up changing size like her previous adventures. The detective was again skeptical, secretly wondering if it wasn't just an imagined event or unusually scaled buildings, but was willing to help. There would be some experimentation to be carried out if they wanted to get things right. He took a minute to call out to one of the store workers, eventually needing Toby to gain their attention.
"Ah, Mister Basil. I'm afraid we don't yet have that Buzz Lightyear utility belt you ordered but.."
"Ah-Bah-bah-bahp!" Basil quickly shushed the employee, a little embarrassed at a purchase he had in mind. In his defense a belt with a built in light, grapple and magnet looked interesting. "I was merely looking to purchase one of these face painting kits and these items. We may have others in mind so could I just have it totalled up when we're done?"
"Absolutely. Take your time." The employee replied while noting down the artist disguise and make up set as part of a bill.
"Alright." Basil indicated a chair in front of the mirror, inviting Alice to sit down so she'd be at his level as he stood on the table. "Just take a seat Miss Liddell, I'll see what kind of mouse I can make out of you."
Basil got to work, using the face paints to shade, colour and detail Alice's face to an approximation of a mouse. He worked like he was painting the Mona Lisa or the Sistine Chapel, a look of serious (but humorous looking considering his task) concentration and occasionally standing back to get a better perspective of his work. The nose and whiskers took a lot of his time as he went back and forth to check the length and width of each whisker matched up. Meanwhile Toby tried to help out by pacing between the costume items and the table to drop off a series of animal ear themed headbands to see which would fit the disguise best, but mostly he pulled himself up to the table with his front paws to watch the transformation taking place.
ooc: Sorry, not sure what colour of mouse you wanted Alice to be, I could edit in if you like or need more to work with.
Though Alice still wasn't totally sure about her idea, the fact that Basil seemed to at least take it seriously was encouraging. The worker seemed to have something else coming in soon, that Basil had previously ordered- a "Buzz Lightyear" utility belt? Now, who might that be? And what sort of utilities could be put on a belt? Alice didn't have much time to think about these sorts of questions before Basil had set her up at the table with his new face paints.
It was rather fascinating to watch Basil work, even though it felt rather funny, in multiple ways, actually going through it. He certainly seemed to be putting a good amount of effort into it; as further detail was added in she started to think that she might just be able to fool the Wonderlanders, as long as they didn't get close enough to tell she didn't really have fur. At opportune moments she tried on the various ears provided by Toby.
"I think... this will work," Alice finally said once everything was finished, smiling as she wore the mouse ears that she felt matched the best. "Of course, my face isn't really shaped right for it, but it should keep me from being confused for a weed or a serpent, at least." So however things eventually worked out, it'd probably at least end up better than the first time. And with how strange some of the residents looked, a slightly-more-human-looking mouse might not stand out too much at all.
(ooc: Color doesn't really matter- light-tan would probably work best though.)

With the ears added Alice was looking a lot more mousey, though Basil considered his work with a paintbrush was mostly to thank. If he hadn't already heard Alice's story about being yelled at by a bird for bumping her nest or bullied by snobby flowers then her statement about serpents and weeds would have baffled him further (though the talking flower part was baffling enough).
"Indeed. I believe I have excelled myself with this disguise. I hope you can replicate it yourself however, maybe some practice before venturing out into Wonderland might help. I dare say you want to apply the facial details in good time."
He closed the paint set and pushed it towards Alice, since she'd be making the most use of it and he had his own set at home befitting his size. Toby made a few noises expressing his confusion of the young girl's metamorphosis, despite having helped by picking the ears out he didn't quite know what to expect from the finished project. This was common around Baker Street when he had to take out Basil and Dawson after the detective had applied one of his home designed disguises from his many props and costume pieces.
"You know it is a shame we don't have any of that mushroom you told me about. Or those other strange concoctions from Wonderland." Basil crossed his arms and stroked his chin. "We could have field tested this among the denizens of London."
He turned back to the dressing table mirror, rolling a few ideas around as he studied his own reflection. Aside from a few other ideas he'd like to try with disguises (and a few experiments with that mushroom) he wasn't sure what else was needed.
"So we have the artist and the mouse. Any other ideas Miss Liddell? Perhaps if you considered the terrain or local customs you could draw inspiration, otherwise we could settle up."
Alice nodded. She wouldn't be able to do quite as good a job as Basil had done with the fine details, but she'd definitely need to at least try to learn how to do reasonably well in replicating it, in case she found herself without allies somewhere in Wonderland. This wasn't the sort of thing one did lazily.
Smiling, she gave Toby a pat on the head at his confusion, before returning her attention to Basil, who didn't seem to be done considering options. He made a good point regarding the mushroom. "I'll try my best to bring something back next time," she asserted. Along with finding out how she'd been tricked into thinking her first trip was a dream, bringing back physical proof was a top priority for her. The size-changing food would be an ideal choice. Indeed, such a thing would be useful in many situations!
Asked for further ideas, Alice thought back once more. "The terrain... well, it was mostly forests of some kind or another, she said. "Apart from that beach where I first arrived, and the castle of course, though I don't plan on going there again! As for customs... well, strangeness was really all that was customary. I can't really think of much that tied anything together... though I suppose there were a number of characters out of nursery rhymes." It occurred to her that maybe that relationship was backwards- perhaps the nursery rhymes were written by people who'd already been to Wonderland, and come back to write about their experiences in verse for children. Which wasn't too dissimilar to her own experience, in fact. Something about Wonderland must simply lend itself to creativity.

"Hmm, well I suppose your usual polite manner should get you through most situations as long as the hostile inhabitants don't recognise you. Perhaps one of these would help."
Basil pulled an pair of folding hand fans from a box of props. After handing one to Alice he, with some difficulty due to the size of the implement, demonstrated the proper usage of it while giving the young girl tips on how to conceal your face while looking casual.
"Light flutter, just covering the lower part of your face. Your eyes just above the edge to continue observing your surroundings. and in a pinch you can always fold it with a flick of the wrist and strike someone. In the far East they've made an art of it."
At this time Basil decided to leave out the harrowing story of how he'd come to know so much about the usage of a traditionally female item like the handheld fan. No one wanted to hear at this point in time a tale of a masquerade ball, Duke's and Baronesses, accidental engagements....Suffice to say it would make a good story when Dawson had fully chronicled it with his other adaptations of Basil's older case files. In any case he added one of the fans to the stack, along with the face paints and ears for the mouse disguise and the artist disguise components.
"A physical appearance is only part of the equation Miss Liddell. Disguise also requires a degree of acting. Would you care to give me a demonstration of your persona in action? Just take a second to gather yourself and then try to act natural. Become your alias."
Of course he didn't expect her to come up with a perfect alter ego right off the bat, but he could gauge the young girl's strengths and weaknesses, then give her pointers as to what she could improve and where she should focus in future to maintain a charade. In his mind she couldn't have picked a better teacher for the task.
Taking the fan, Alice followed Basil's lead in trying it out; she was familiar with them from various summer gatherings, but using them for disguise purposes was a new thing to her. As the situation reminded her of some of the older ladies of her family, she tried to think back to how she'd seen them use fans. Looking more mature might help her to go unchallenged when traveling on her own; but then again, the first time around nobody seemed to pay any attention to her age. Briefly she wondered if any of this was really going to work in a place like Wonderland that seemed to play by its own rules, but then she stopped herself. She had to remain positive about this; after all, if by chance her imagination had created Wonderland somehow, imagining things being harder for her would just be more likely to make it so! Focusing on her own problems, Alice didn't pay much attention to any possible incongruity caused by Basil's knowledge of feminine accessories. Detectives were supposed to know things, after all.
Then, Alice's thoughts were interrupted by some additional advice. She should try acting? Right now? As Basil thought, she wasn't feeling prepared to do it just that moment, but she thought she might as well try her best. Thinking for a moment, she put her hands on her hips and tried to sound like a stuffy adult. "Missster Basil, I assure you I am perfectly natural already," she said, squeaking a bit on the "per". "Actually, that might sound too much like an impression of the Queen of Hearts herself," she noted in her normal voice. That hadn't been her intention, but it was the first thing that came to mind. "I'll have to try something else..."

After hearing the 'natural' disguise voice Basil merely stood and blinked a few times. Inside he was thinking about the short lived class he tried to start to teach others useful detective skills. Dawson had to pull him out of the room and apologise after he smacked a few too many students with a rolled up newspaper. Perhaps it was not best to repeat that incident. Thankfully Alice mentioned that she was using the Queen of Hearts as a base voice, he could work with that.
"Well, perhaps it would be best not to choose a persona that upstages royalty. The idea is to blend when you wish to stay anonymous and stand out when you wish to gain attention. Practise both, build backstory and details, memorise everything. You could be asked almost any question and you don't want to give different answers to two different people."
Back home Basil had many files on his undercover personas, tucked away among his criminal files to keep anyone from connecting the gentleman thief, the grizzled smuggler or the east end con artist to Baker Street's famous detective. If necessary he could describe everything about them from their school days to their most recent last brush with the law.
"I'll go settle the bill. You might want to clean off the face paint. If the public sees you going in a girl and coming out a mouse they could put two and two together when you actually need the disguise."
Toby perched up on the table, letting the mouse run along his nose and onto the back of his head before pattering along to the counter to pay for the supplies. The costume pieces, animal ears and a few packs of face paints, maybe a few extras in case Alice needed to practise applying the disguise at home. After paying Basil and Toby met with Miss Liddell again, precariously balancing a basket of purchases on the back of the hound.
