Life's too short to never let you see who I am, the queen of the ice and snow.

"Just breath, Elsa." Elsa was not good at being inconspicuous. She was still not used to being around people in general so when told to 'act naturally' she didn't really have much of a basis for comparison. Her long pale blonde hair had been braided and twirled up around her head then tucked strategically beneath a tight fitting dark cold colored cap. She wore a simple dress of the same color with deep green accents. It was decided it was best to stay away from blues and other colors she normally wore in order to maintain her anonymity.
It wouldn't be the worst thing if she were discovered but something about this self appointed quest insisted that the fewer people that knew what she was up to, the better. Not the least of her concern being that if it were possible to replicate her powers, and the wrong person managed to get hold of that information, it could be catastrophic. Her abilities had been disastrous enough in her own novice hands.
Carefully Elsa did her best to look as though she belonged right out there walking and weaving through the courtyard along with the rest of the people. She avoided eye contact as much as possible and tried not to hold herself with the same poise she usually did in public. She had told Kristoff to meet her near the edge of town and the two of them would go from there. She hadn't wanted to just ride out with him straight from the palace. It would be obvious she wasn't Anna when her sister appeared about the castle and it would be pretty easy to deduce who had left the palace with the ice harvesting mountain man.
It was a longer walk than she had anticipated but given her recent trek to the North Mountain the trip through town seemed quick in comparison. Plus she didn't feel inclined to run which was a relief. Though the adrenaline pumping through her had helped spirit her off into the mountains, she'd felt exhaustion and fatigue set in both from her physical exertion and from the excessive use of her powers.
When she finally reached the town's limits she found Kristoff waiting for her with his reindeer companion beside a stone wall and she felt a quiet smile slip into place. She didn't know much about him aside what Anna had incessantly prattled on about, but just from looking at him she felt a kinship. He looked about as comfortable in this mess of people as she felt.
Elsa approached him feeling like every single emotion in the spectrum were fighting for dominancy. She was nervous, uncomfortable, afraid, excited, hopeful, and so many others. "Are you ready?" She asked when he looked at her, feeling uncertain about everything even now.
Kristoff had not had much one-on-one interaction with Elsa. Usually when he was with her, Anna was a comfortable, talkative, buffer between them. There was never an uncomfortable silence between them, and for that Kristoff was thankful. He was not exactly intimidated by Elsa, but knew that she loved her sister and would be the first person he would have to gain approval from if he wanted to ask Anna to marry him.
So, when Elsa had come to him and asked that he escort her to see the Trolls, Kristoff had been a little hesitant (mostly because his family was… well, his family) but ultimately agreed. He wanted Elsa to like him. Maybe they could get to know one another better on the trip to the Valley.
At her voice he turned, looking her over quickly. It was the first time he'd ever seen her when she was not wearing her queenly robes and gowns. Dressed like a commoner, she seemed soft and fragile. In that moment, she was a young woman summoning her courage-- not a queen. He could see the worry and anxiety in her eyes and without even thinking he reached out and put his hand on her shoulder in a comforting gesture.
"Don't worry. We'll be back before sunset." Kristoff gave her a gentle smile and turned back to the sled that Sven was latched to. It was the very sled that Anna had given him, complete with cup holders. "You can sit up front with me. There's a blanket under the seat if you get… cold." He faltered at the end, wondering if she even *did* get cold but thought it was probably rude to ask.

There was something about the way Kristoff reassured her that made Elsa feel at least a little more relaxed about their journey. Of course, telling her to stop worrying was like telling Anna to sit still. Powers aside, now that she was a queen with the lives of the entire kingdom resting on her shoulders she reasonably had more than a little to be concerned about.
Elsa trusted Kristoff a little bit more than she probably should given how little she actually knew about him- and Anna's so far fifty-fifty track record in boyfriends- but he had a number of factors that stacked very high in his favor including the fact that he'd helped Anna, whether or not there had been a mild amount of coercion. And he was willing to help her even though she'd accidentally frozen the entire fjord solid and almost put him out of business, so she was grateful.
"Thanks," Elsa said as she made her way around to the opposite side of the sled and delicately climbed into it, settling gently into the seat which was more comfortable than it looked. Again she tried to relax her rather rigid posture though it was still born more of her anxiety than her attempts at poise. "I think I'll be all right." She said in response to the blanket, offering him an appreciative smile.
"I've been here before once. There, I mean. The Valley of Living Rock." She said once they were both settled in and the sled began to move, not really sure what prompted the admission. "...but it was a long time ago." It was like another life back then when her parents has spirited she and her sister off to save Anna’s life. Everything was so different now but during those times when she let herself think of them, Elsa would give anything to have her parents back, especially now. Having their guidance would have offered her some measure of comfort in this endeavor.
Sven had been watching the two of them with curious eyes, stretching his neck out to try and get a whiff of Elsa's scent. His stubby reindeer tail wagged like a dog's when she moved to get in the sled and he faced forward again, excited to be going on a trip. Kristoff waited until Elsa had made herself comfortable before walking around to the other side. He stepped up into his seat and took the reins, urging Sven into a brisk trot.
Kristoff hadn't really thought about what they would talk about on the way up the mountain, but luckily Elsa was the first to speak. The Mountain man glanced her way, hesitating just a moment before making his own admission-- "Yeah… I remember."
They passed through the gates, leaving the City without anyone paying then another thought. No one seemed to recognize Elsa. On the untouched powdery snow, the sled moved like a dream. Kristoff had carefully cleaned it and waxed it before the trip.
Feeling he should explain, he continued, "When I was a little kid, I followed these horses to the Valley. That's how I found the Trolls… following the horses an this strange trail of frost. I saw your family that night… but I didn't understand what I was seeing until much later."

Kristoff's answer caught her completely off guard. He "remembered"? How was that even possible? She turned to look at him feeling completely bewildered, not really certain what her expression was doing. Probably shifting to something that looked like horror and guilt. As far as she was aware the Trolls and her parents were the only beings that knew what happened to Anna that day and her parents were long dead. The idea that he'd known about her abilities all this time was something of a shock.
"You've known all this time? That I had powers?" She managed to stammer out all the while staring at him in disbelief. "What I can do? What I DID do? What I- what I did to Anna? And you never said anything? To anyone?" To Anna? She looked away watching the ground as it shifted from the stone roads to grass and snow, gliding gracefully. She felt her heart start to beat faster as she struggled to gulp down deep breaths of air. The memory of when she hit Anna with her ice powers and nearly killed her was something that could upset her to extremes in only moments.
She closed her eyes and felt the warm tears forming behind them. She let the warmth of them wash over her, refusing to allow her abilities to control her or hurt anyone else. She opened her eyes again feeling more in control and wiped away the remnants of the tears that dampened her cheeks. That was why she was doing this. To figure out where her powers came from and what caused them to activate so she could keep everyone safe. The “episode” only lasted a few moments but it seemed like much longer when she turned back to Kristoff to follow up her previous questions and ask him, "Why?"
