Mittens had never been to this part of New York. It was ritzy-- fewer rats, less garbage. She'd found a restaurant and followed her nose around back, hoping to find some food scraps... but unfortunately she wasn't the only one looking to get fed. A massive stray dog had been laying there and as soon as he spotted her he was up and running.
Mittens ran for her life. "Hey, Buddy-- I didnt know that was YOUR back door!" The dog snapped at her heels. "Uh-- You know Bolt? Famous dog actor? He's my, uh-- friend! See? Dogs love me! Ah!"
Mittens darted out into traffic and suddenly her eyes were blinded by the lights of honking cars. She kept moving, weaving through the legs of humans, ignoring their shrieks and curses.
Finally she ran down another alley. Mittens scrambled up onto a dumpster, raced along the narrow edge, and made a desperate leap for the fire escape. She barely made it, her clawless paws slipping as she frantically tried to pull herself up. She could hear the dog snapping and snarling beneath her. Mittens just managed to get a back paw up to gain leverage and heaved herself up over the edge. She lay there on the bottom step, roughly two feet out of the dog's reach, panting as her heart hammered against her narrow ribs.
Eventually Mittens sat up and smirked down at the dog, the end of her tail moving up and down smugly. "Not fast enough, Fido."
Suddenly the fire escape gave a sickening lurch and dropped a foot closer to the dog's snapping teeth. Mittens almost jumped out of her skin and darted up the partially-compressed stairs and didn't stop until she was a few floors up and well out of danger.
It was the first time the cats had been to the Isle of the Statue in some time. Madame had decided to visit old friends of hers, and naturally her closest family was to come along. Thomas had taken the kittens to 'see the city sights'-- which he assured Duchess meant a simple trip around the block to see some friends of his own from the old days-- and now she had the comfortable hotel room to herself.
A vacation was just the sort of thing the family needed. Not that their home life was so stressful, but a little peace and quiet was good for anybody, once in a while.
Just as Duchess began to let herself doze off, her peace and quiet was interrupted by the loud and very angry barking of an alley dog, followed by the shrieking of the metal fire escape. Concerned, she leapt up off the bed and onto the windowsill, peeking out to the fire escape to spot a small black cat and an angered dog in the alley below.
"Ah, are you alright out there?" Her concern showed through in her tone, and Duchess nudged the hotel room window open with a paw, glad for Madame leaving them unlocked. "Mon dieu, you poor thing... You're only skin and bones."
Mittens had been sitting on the fire escape, one of her forepaws pressed against her racing heart, when she heard Duchess' voice softly through the glass. Her dark ears perked up and she turned her head, seeing what was perhaps the most beautiful cat she'd ever seen looking back at her. Duchess' white fur was perfect-- not a whisker out of place. It was obvious she was someone's well-loved pet.
The white cat pawed the window open and Mittens turned to face her fully, tilting her head just slightly at Duchess' accent. Mittens glanced down at herself and then laughed, waving it off with a paw, acting confident despite her empty belly. "Ah, I'm fine. So long as I can keep out-running jerks like that guy, I'll be fine."
The dog stopped barking, finally accepting that Mittens was out of reach. It didn't move to leave, however, but sat by the dumpster, glaring up at the two felines. Mittens ignored him in that special way only cats can.
"I'm Mittens. You ain't from around here, are ya? First time in the Big Apple?"
Mittens couldn't go anywhere until the dog left. Besides, it would be nice to talk to another cat for a change.
Duchess took a few steps out of the safety of her hotel room to peer down the fire escape at the dog below, who didn't seem to have any intention of moving any time soon. The feline tutted quietly, clearly unimpressed with the canine's behaviour, before turning to look back at the black cat, who introduced herself at Mittens.
"Mittens-- because of your paws?" She hoped that was the reasoning, the pattern of the small cats colouring making it look like she was running around with little socks. If it wasn't, she only hoped that Mittens wouldn't be offended somehow by the presumption. "My name is Duchess-- and no, my family and I, we are from Paris."
She sat down, tilting her head slightly at the use of the term Big Apple, before she remembered Thomas using the word as a description for the city-- though, Duchess hadn't seen a single apple in the time she'd been there. "It is, yes! It is a beautiful city, though very, very loud."
Looking Mittens over once again, the motherly cat really couldn't help but notice just how small she was, and while her previous comment had been brushed aside, she couldn't quite help needing to say something more, "I don't suppose you would like something to eat, would you? My little ones have left for the day, and Madame as well; you're more than welcome to come inside and wait out that awful creature down there."
The white cat padded forward to look down at the dog and Mittens followed her gaze. Both cats were obviously unimpressed. The house cat then asked about her paws and for a moment Mittens felt a sensation of shame. She looked down at her dirty white paws critically-- could this pet tell that she has been declawed? Did it show??
"Oh... uh, no. They named me before they took my claws." Mittens wished she could hide her feet from Duchess's eyes, but she was not a cat to show weakness for long. She shrugged her narrow shoulders and smiled. "But hey, it was either Mittens or Mistofolese. I think I lucked out."
The white cat introduced herself as Duchess, which was a beautiful and fitting. "I've heard about Paris. Mostly about the smells. Bolt went there with the family one time. Why did your family leave?"
Duchess said the city was beautiful and Mittens couldn't help a little swell of pride. She was a New Yorker, after all. Even after being dragged across the country by a crazy dog. But before she could say as much Duchess offered Mittens some food.
Her pride told her to say no. But at that moment her stomach gave a pitiful little growl. Mittens blinked and then grimaced. At the same time the dog began to bark again. Mittens smiled softly. "I would really appreciate that, Duchess."
"Took your claws? Oh, you poor dear..." Duchess had no real use for her claws, but she never understood the horrid practice of removing them. Some humans, it seemed, didn't understand just how badly cats needed their claws. "Je suis désolé, I didn't mean anything so terrible. I only meant to notice that the white on your paws looks as if you were wearing mittens."
"Bolt?" She couldn't resist questioning the haphazard mention of some friend and his family, before shaking her head and smiling to Mittens, "We are here on a vacation. My Madame, she loves this city. She used to sing here, when she was younger. So, she decided to come back to visit old friends."
The older cat gave a glance to Mittens' stomach as she heard the little growl, but she wouldn't question it if Mittens chose to say no. Thankfully for the both of them, she agreed.
"Then please, please, come in!" Ducking beneath the opening in the window, Duchess lead her new friend into the hotel room. The suite itself was brightly lit, with crystal and gold accents that reminded Duchess of her mansion home back in Paris. In the kitchenette area were five bowls, all laid out and filled for the cats.
Mittens knew by the look on Duchess's face that there had been a miscommunication between them. Mittens had assumed the question had been about her claws. It didn't occur to her to think it was about her coloring. Honestly, she had never given her name that much thought. Who knew why humans chose to call animals what they did? Mittens lifted a paw and looked at it with her head cocked to the side, only to lower it quickly and shake her head when Duchess began to apologize. "Hey, nothing to be sorry for. You're probably right. About the white, I mean."
Duchess invited Mittens inside and Mittens followed. Once her paws hit the plush carpeting inside she ducked her head a little, all her senses listening to the room, for signs of people. She couldn't hear anything… which must mean that just as Duchess said-- they were alone. She could smell people, however, and other cats. Slowly, she began to relax.
"They took you with them on vacation? You're lucky. … most pets I know see vacation as a bad word. It means going to the kennel. Or worse, being left alone for days and days."
The room was beautiful and the carpet the softest Mittens had ever walked on. She padded along at Duchess's side into the kitchenette. Judging by the size of the bowls, there were two adult cats and three little ones. Mittens looked at Duchess again and hesitated. All of Mitten's considerable pride told her not to take any food… but Duchess was looking at her with such genuine kindness that it didn't really feel like charity. It felt more like a gift from a friend.
"… Are you sure? I mean, I don't want to eat your kids' food. I'm a stray but I'm not that bad off." … Yet.
Padding her way across the room, Duchess paused to glance back at Mittens as she spoke, offering her a friendly little smile. "My Madame takes us everywhere she can. We are her only family, now. I think we are very lucky, too... I do not think she would ever leave us alone. But I have known cats who were left behind by their people. And some who's people had never come back."
She knew enough strays that came to Madame's home that had been in such a situation. Many seemed distrustful of people because of it, but Madame Adelaide was quick to earn back even their trust. She was one of those people, someone you couldn't help falling in love with... At least, that was how Duchess saw her.
She was surprised when Mittens once again asked if she was certain, and the matronly cat gave a nod, gently sitting beside the bowls to watch her. Duchess didn't realize that her kindness could come across as pity, as feeling sorry for the other. While she did feel sorry for her, she felt concern more than anything else, and knew that if she could help, there was no reason she shouldn't. She taught those lessons to her little ones; why wouldn't she follow them?
"Don't be so silly, mon chou. We have more than we need, and I would not have offered if I were not sure. Please, eat."
Mittens listened as Duchess described her owner. Ah, so Duchess belonged to a rich ol' cat lady. That explained a lot. Mittens smiled softly, genuinely happy for her. It wasnt in Mittens to hate ALL humans... not anymore. So she didnt tell Duchess she was crazy to trust her human or to believe that humans could love forever. Mittens knew now that some COULD. ... Mittens hoped that Duchess had found one of those special few.
Duchess again gave permission for Mitttens to eat, so she did. She ate till her belly was full and then sat back, rubbing her little bulging stomach with her paw and gave an appreciative sigh. The truth was, she'd been starving. This was the first good meal she'd had in days.
Glancing at Duchess, Mittens bowed her head a little, suddenly embarrassed. Duchess was a purebred lady and she'd just stuffed her face in front of her. "Uhh... SO! Kids, huh?" She gave a soft laugh that sounded awkward even to her ears and grimaced. "Where are the little tykes, anyway?"
Mittens looked around, even lowering her head to see under a few of the sofas. No kittens anywhere. Judging by the bowls there were at least three.
Duchess couldn't have been more pleased when Mittens finally just gave in to the gentle nudging and allowed herself to eat. It was a relief; the mother wasn't sure she could take seeing the poor dear so thin. It worried her. Her newest friend couldn't be unwell, not when she could so easily do something to fix it. It wouldn't have been right.
When the smaller cat was finished eating, she looked suddenly a bit sheepish, and Duchess realized she had been staring in a rather rude display. Turning her gaze away, she laughed a bit at the sudden segue into new conversation. It was a welcomed change, and any opportunity to talk about her family was a welcomed one to her.
"Mm, my three little kittens. They're out with their father right now," Duchess didn't feel the need to explain that Thomas wasn't their birth father. There was no need; anyone who saw him with her little ones could tell that he loved them more than the one who had assisted in their creation. "I think he said he knew someone nearby, musician friends. They will probably be back soon-- perhaps you will like to meet them? You are, of course, welcome to stay as long as you need. They would love some new company."
