Character Name: Nicholas Piberius Wilde
Type of Creature: Anthropomorphic Fox
Rank: Force of Good
Movie/TV Series: Zootopia
Home Island: Isle of the Beast
Personality: A charismatic young fox, Nick is able to use his charm and, he is generally able to talk his way out of sticky situations.
At the same time, when someone gets the better of him, he doesn’t quite know what to do. He’s so used to staying one step ahead of everyone else that when someone gets the drop on him, it throws him for a loop. For a little while, anyway; he’s generally able to recover with a witty retort and a smirk. Nick’s very good at improvising if he has to, but he prefers to be the one ahead of the curve.
Nick is a highly intelligent fox, and he uses this to his advantage, as well. He’s able to read mammals quite well, and he will play on their sympathies, prejudices, etc, anything that will work in his favor. In addition to his intelligence, he’s quite witty, ready with a snappy comeback almost all of the time.
Even though he grew up in a society that viewed foxes as little more than shifty lowlives, at best, Nick is still fiercely protective of those he is close to. It takes some time to get past his walls, but once a mammal manages, they have a friend for life. Unless they do something that Nick sees as a betrayal; because it’s hard to get close to him, when mammals betray him or wrong him, he takes it that much harder and will build up his walls even more, in anticipation of the next betrayal.
Nick does his best to appear independent; he’s lived on his own for quite some time, but he cares deeply about his friends. He craves companionship, even though he tries to show others that he doesn’t need anyone but himself. At the same time, Nick prefers to keep his own company, because he knows that he won’t turn on himself.
Throughout the years living in Zootopia, Nick has grown up to be a bit bitter about the way so many other mammals view the city as some sort of utopia. For many years, he thought that dreams were far-off fantasies, and that no one could really go beyond what society thought of them. This has started to wear off, and he’s not as cynical as he had been, since Judy came into his life, and since he joined the ZPD.
Powers, Skills, Strengths, and/or Any Other Abilities:
Fox-ness: Nick is an anthropomorphic fox, and as such, he possesses all the strengths and skills that normal foxes do.
- Night Vision: As a red fox, Nick is able to see in the dark without assistance from night vision goggles.
- Claws: Though he doesn’t often use them, Nick has claws. He tends to keep them fairly short, but they’re still sharp.
- Teeth: In addition to his claws, he has sharp teeth, as well. His canines are sharper than his other teeth, like traditional red foxes.
- Sense of Smell: Foxes are canines, and as such, Nick has an excellent sense of smell. He’s able to pick out precise scents even in a huge city like Zootopia. This is quite useful when he and Judy are looking for specific suspects.
- Speed: Nick is quite fast when he wants to be. He’s not as fast as a cheetah, but he has kept himself in good shape, just in case he ever had to run from a situation.
- Agile: Nick is quite nimble, and capable of jumping over fences up to six-and-a-half feet high.
- Good swimmer: Though he doesn’t swim often, Nick is a good swimmer, able to navigate most bodies of water quickly and easily.
- Hearing: As a red fox, Nick has quite good hearing, though it’s not quite as acute as Judy’s.
Cunning: Nick is quite crafty when it comes to getting what he wants. He’s not afraid to use evasion to work around situations that aren’t going his way, and he can be quite calculating when the situation calls for it. Sometimes, this requires taking advantage of other people, which he is able to do by quickly and easily reading them to figure out what the best strategy is to make things go his way.
Business savvy: He was able to come up with the idea of buying one Jumbo Pop from an elephant ice cream parlour, melting it down, and re-freezing it into smaller pawpsicles that they could then sell for $2.00, giving them a huge return on their original investment. Not only that, Nick made sure that he had the necessary paperwork that, if he were caught, he would be able to get out of the situation by showing whoever it was that what he was doing was completely legal, if not the most honest.
Intuitive: Nick is able to read other mammals fairly well. He observed others from a very young age, learning to figure out what body language meant, so that he could use their moods and prejudices to his advantage. Now that he’s not conning anymore, he’s still able to use this intuition in his work as a police officer.
Con artist: Even though he’s joined the police force and given up his days of being a con artist, Nick still has all the experience that being a con artist from a young age has given him. He has street smarts, business savvy, and all the contacts he made from his conning days.
Charismatic: Nick uses his charisma and charm to his advantage. He can talk just about anyone into just about anything; he’ll use their sympathies or their prejudices against them, whatever he needs in any particular situation. And now that he’s part of the ZPD, he uses this with his fellow officers to make friends.
Intelligent: This fox is very smart; he can look at a situation, and he will do his best to figure out as many possible outcomes as he can. This came in handy when he was a con artist, and it is serving him well now that he is a police officer, too.
Witty: Nick almost always has some sort of snappy comeback for when mammals try to talk down to him because he’s a fox. He’s quick on the uptake and quite clever.
Caring: Though it takes some time, when mammals get past the walls that Nick has built to keep himself emotionally safe, they will never find a better friend. Nick cares about those he’s friends with, and he will do just about anything for them.
Loyal: Nick is fiercely loyal to those he cares about, even going so far as to put himself in potential harm’s way when Judy was injured after she solved the savage predators case.
Officer training: Nick decided to join the Zootopia Police Department, which meant that he had to go to the Zootopia Police Academy. His time in police officer training honed the skills he already possessed, helped to give him more endurance, as well as a more comprehensive knowledge of the legal system and laws of Zootopia.
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Cocky: Nick is very good at what he does, and he knows it. He is not afraid to boast about his accomplishments, something that can allow others to catch him at his own game. For example, he boasted to Judy about how much he makes a day, which allowed her to threaten to arrest him for felony tax evasion.
Fear of muzzles: It’s safe to say that, due to his past experiences with muzzles, Nick has a phobia of them. It’s bad enough that even seeing pictures of muzzles is triggering to him. If his opponents were to find this out, it could very easily be used against him.
Size: Despite all the strengths that come with being a fox, Nick is noticeably smaller than many of the mammals that live in Zootopia, and certainly smaller than most of the other predators. He is small enough to share a chair with Judy in the bullpen at the ZPD. Even though he’s quite quick, his size definitely poses some disadvantages when dealing with larger mammals.
Con artist: Nick is still somewhat of a con artist. It’s what he has done most of his life, and he’s still adjusting to being on the right side of the law. Sometimes, he’ll revert to his con artist way of thinking without even realizing it, and it takes him a little bit of time to realign.
Vulnerable: When you get beneath the walls that Nick has built up to protect himself, he’s really quite vulnerable, especially if he ever opens up to others. If someone were to get him to trust them, they could easily hurt him because of it.
Caring: Similarly, Nick cares very much about those he’s close to. If someone manages to become his friend, they have a friend for life. Which could be used against him, especially as he starts to create more enemies, being on the right side of the law.
Prejudiced: Having grown up as a fox, Nick has had to deal with his fair share of prejudice. In turn, it has made him a bit prejudiced, as well, towards other animals. He’s getting better, but there are still times he’ll judge mammals by what they are and not by who they are.
Night vision: Most red foxes are nocturnal, and being in direct sunlight could damage Nick’s eyes. To get around this, he wears sunglasses, but it would be fairly easy for someone to take them and to damage his vision.
Canon History:
Ever since he was a young fox, Nicholas P. Wilde wanted to be more than society thought of foxes. He had plenty of experience with prejudice, mostly witnessing it, to want to be more than just a shifty lowlife. Throughout the majority of his childhood, his small family was very poor, which meant that they didn’t have much. When he was eight or nine, he wanted to prove that there was more to him than just being a fox, and he wanted to join the Junior Ranger Scouts. He wanted to be part of something, part of a herd, even though he was a predator.
His mother scrimped and saved to buy him a brand new Junior Ranger Scouts uniform, and Nick headed off to his first meeting, excited to finally be a part of something. He started to recite the oath of the Junior Ranger Scouts, to be brave, loyal, helpful, and trustworthy when the other scouts tackled him to the ground and forced a muzzle on him. They taunted him, stating that they’d never fully trust a predator without a muzzle.
Nick ran out of the meeting and finally managed to get the muzzle off of his face, by pulling it over his ears and the rest of his head. After letting his emotions get the better of him, Nick pulled himself together. He learned two things that day: that he would never show others that they got to him, and that if society was only going to view foxes as shifty and untrustworthy, he shouldn’t even bother to try to be anything else.
After the incident with the Junior Ranger Scouts, Nick embraced his nature as a fox and decided to hone his conning skills. Over the next three years, he figured out the best way to con other animals into doing what he wanted, and he’s been relying on those skills ever since.
When he turned twelve, Nick started conning mammals in earnest. There were a lot of mammals out there that fell prey to his charms, and he used that to his advantage. He started making about $200 a day, and this was while he was still in school. To make his mother happy (and hopefully proud of him), Nick joined his school’s track team, and discovered that he was quite good at running. It was while he was part of the team that he met and befriended the fastest sloth he knows, Flash, whom he affectionately refers to as “Flash, Flash, Hundred-Yard-Dash.”
After he was done with school, Nick decided to do what he did best and went into working his cons full time. He met a Fennec fox called Finnick, and the two of them went into business together, with Finnick pretending to be Nick’s son to help further their schemes. Their latest arrangement was buying a Jumbo Pop from an elephant ice cream parlour, melting it down, then refreezing it into smaller pawpcicles to sell for a considerable profit.
It was during one such hustle that he met Judy Hopps. Nick conned her into paying for the Jumbo Pop, and he and Finnick melted it down to be refrozen into smaller pawpsicles that they could sell for considerable profit. The rabbit officer came to Nick the next day to get his help finding a missing mammal. Nick was the last known witness, and she managed to turn his hustle around on him so that she could get him to work with her. They started out in the direction the missing otter had last gone, which led them to a clue.
That clue was the license plate number of the car the otter had gotten into, and in order to obtain the evidence that Judy had against his tax evasion, Nick went along with her. He took her to the DMV to run the plate, where they ran into his friend Flash, who just so happened to be a sloth. Nick purposefully managed to waste the whole day, so by the time they got to the next step on their trail, the lot where the car was located was closed. In order to search the place, Judy would have needed a warrant, which she did not have. Since they were at a dead end, Nick asked for the pen; he had done everything that Judy asked and she had given him her word that she’d give him the recording. Instead of simply handing him the pen, the rabbit threw it over the fence, into the locked lot. After commenting that she was a sore loser, Nick climbed the fence to retrieve the pen, only to discover that Judy had burrowed underneath and was in possession of the pen once more. She told Nick that she didn’t need a warrant if she had probable cause and she was pretty sure she had just seen a “shifty lowlife” climbing the fence. Which meant that, if he wanted the pen, he had to go along with her a bit longer.
As soon as Nick saw the claw marks in the back of the limo, he sobered up and started really helping Judy. But before they could do much, a pair of polar bears arrived, who proceeded to take the rabbit and the fox to Mr. Big, the most feared crime boss in all of Tundratown. Nick and Mr. Big had history and Mr. Big was about to have them killed when Nick and Judy were rescued by Mr. Big’s daughter. Mr. Big decided to help them, and he gave them another lead they could follow.
They made their way to the Rain Forest District, where they met up with the jaguar who had been driving the limo when the otter had gone savage. Before they had a chance to fully question him, he went savage, as well. Nick and Judy barely escaped, with Judy managing to call for backup before she lost her radio. When the police arrived, the jaguar was gone. The chief proceeded to demand Judy’s badge, but Nick stepped in and defended her, and the two of them set off to find more evidence about the case. Nick realized that the traffic cams would have caught some information, and after hitting up City Hall, they headed to where they had traced the van that had taken the jaguar.
With the evidence present, it appeared as though the mayor was the one imprisoning the savage mammals, and the case was closed. Judy gave a press conference, stating that the only animals going savage were predators, and that it appeared they were reverting to their primitive ways. After the press conference, Nick confronted Judy, and when she inadvertently revealed that she could be afraid of him, he left.
As more and more predators started to go savage, Nick discovered that Zootopia was a hostile place for him. Not only was he a predator, but he was a fox, which made everything that much worse. He took to hiding out under a bridge in an abandoned park, keeping out of the way. Time went by and things just kept getting worse.
And then, Judy Hopps showed up once more, stating that she’d found the real reason the predators had gone savage: toxic flowers. They needed to find the weasel she’d first apprehended. But before they went anywhere, she apologized to Nick. He forgave her, and they set off because, as he said, he knew everyone. On the weasel’s information, they made their way to the lab where the serum was made. They tried to get the evidence to headquarters, but they ran into a snag by way of Mayor Bellwhether, who, it turns out, was behind the whole thing. They manage to get her to confess, recorded it on Judy’s pen, and the police arrested her when they showed up.
After that, Nick reconsidered Judy’s invitation to become her partner. He went to the Zootopia Police Academy, just like Judy had, and she gave a speech at his commencement. Now, the two of them are partners on the force, working to make Zootopia a better place.
Game Information: Since he became a cop, Nick, assigned as Judy’s partner, has been working to make the streets of Zootopia a better place. However, he would very much like to visit a bunch of these other places in this new Rohandor; he lived in the city all his life and it’s time to branch out. He’s curious what humans are actually like, now that they’ve discovered that they’re real and not simply some fairy tail.
Anything Else: “Nicholas Piberius Wilde” is a play on James Tiberius Kirk.
Robin Hood was Nick’s favourite movie as a child. Still is, though he probably won’t admit it. Fox and the Hound traumatized him, however, and he does not speak of this movie.

Nicolas Wilde was a clever fox, which didn’t really surprise anyone. He’d been a con-mammal for years, after all, and pretty much everyone knew him, at this point. What did surprise most mammals, though, was the fact that Nick had decided to join the force, that he wanted to be a police officer. After all, he’d spent the majority of his life avoiding the cops.
And it hadn’t been easy, that was for sure. If he wasn’t so stubborn, he probably would have given up a few times over by now. But there was no way he was quitting; in the words of a particularly endearing/aggravating bunny, yes, there was absolutely shame in giving up, especially when you were so close to your goal. The obstacle course had been a breeze, despite his size. Nick had grown up on the streets of Zootopia; he’d had to deal with all of the districts at one point or another. Now, if he could do just as well on the written portion, he was sure to make near the top of his class.
Truth be told, he wasn’t terribly worried about that, either. Sure, he was a little bit nervous; he wanted prove to everyone, including himself, that he was more than just a sly fox. He was everything he’d wanted to be when he’d tried to be a Junior Ranger Scout; he just had to show it.
Still, a little more studying couldn’t hurt. He was determined to do his best, after all, though he wasn’t concerned about graduating first in the class, the way Judy had. She was already going to tease him about that, no matter what place he ended up holding at the end. But he wanted to do his best for him, so he broke out the books again. Nick had spent so much time on the streets, figuring out ways around the police that studying just what went on and the intricacies of the laws was actually really interesting. His background made him the perfect candidate for an officer, but he never would have been admitted if it weren’t for Judy. To be honest, he never would have even considered applying. But, here he was, about to graduate (pending written examination), Zootopia’s first fox police officer.
He was gonna make his mother proud.
