The skies were clear that night. Brooklyn was never really sure whether it was a good thing or a bad thing. The lack of cloud coverage was great as far as their visibility was concerned. Made the bad guys a lot easier to spot. Of course the increased visibility worked both ways. When there were no clouds in the sky, they themselves were easily spotted.
"Angela is not used to the hostility of humans. Protect her from her innocence."
Brooklyn had listened quietly and attentively to Goliath's words before they left on patrol. Angela was Goliath's biological daughter and while traditionally the gargoyle way was to accept all those in the clan as brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers to each other, Goliath openly acknowledged and accepted Angela as his own. It didn't ever really occur to any of them to question this decision or think it strange. Along with the clan's significantly diminished size, there was much about their small clan that was no longer traditional.
Though he took Goliath's words to heart, having nothing but respect for his elder, Angela was fierce and strong all on her own and would more or less have no trouble looking out for herself. It was one of the many reasons Brooklyn found himself growing to care for her more and more each day. No matter what Goliath's words or Angela's ability to take care of herself, he would always watch out for her until the end of everything no matter the cost to himself.
His growing feelings for Angela were making him uneasy and even a little timid around her. He wanted to court her but was never quite sure the best way to go about it. The last thing he wanted to do was push her away or worse, drive her into the arms of one of his rookery brothers. He wasn't sure he could handle that. As long as she remained independent he still had a chance to gain her favor.
But he didn't have to worry about that tonight, tonight they were on patrol. Ever since Goliath had made him his second in command and especially since their world become a little less safe, he took the responsibility very seriously. Both protecting the rest of his clan as well as any innocent bystanders in the city.
As they swooped lower, but not too close to any of the building roof's, he scanned the ground looking for any sign of disturbance. "Just holler if you see anything." Brooklyn instructed staying on task and continuing to scan the area as they soared by.

As soon as Goliath had assigned their patrol groups, Angela had raced to the edge of the castle, leaping into the night sky.
They were supposed to be patrolling the city for any disturbances, but she loved the feel of the sky beneath her wings, regardless of whether or not they found anything.
Plus, she was with Brooklyn. He was a dear, dear friend. And that appeared to be all that he was. Ever since she'd told all three of the Trio to back off, no one had approached her.
She hadn't quite expected that; she hadn't wanted to scare them off, after all. As it was, Broadway and Lexington were simply friends. And Angela was content, where they were concerned. But she found herself wanting to impress Brooklyn. He knew that she was a strong and capable Gargoyle, yes, but she wanted him to ... show some interest. And perhaps he would start to do that if she could impress him.
It was interesting to think that, not too long ago, the tables had been turned. Except, at that point, the Trio had been squabbling to try to outdo each other.
Angela was so lost in her thoughts that it took her a moment to register Brooklyn's words.
"I will," she smiled, swooping closer to him. "I hope tonight is uneventful," she admitted, casting her eyes around the city, "It's such a beautiful night, after all." It was almost a shame to waste it on patrolling, really; she wanted to do something fun with Brooklyn. But she couldn't muster the courage to tell him.
She was a strong and capable Gargoyle, but when it came to the idea of being rejected by the one Gargoyle she cared for ... in that way, she was terrified.
"Oh, yeah, me too, me too." Brooklyn agreed probably a little too quickly and he smacked himself inwardly. He sounded like Patrick Swazye in Dirty Dancing when he and Baby had been driving back from the show- Brooklyn loved eighties movies, a secret he would take with him long into the grave. But instead of trying to catch a glimpse of Angela in the proverbial rearview mirror, Brooklyn was decidedly not looking in her direction.
When he looked at the only female gargoyle in their clan all rational thought tended to vacate his mind and given that he was trying to stay focused, he concluded it would be rather counter productive. He cleared his throat, "I mean I hope it's uneventful too."
Why did he always manage to sound like an idiot when he was talking to someone he cared about? Well, cared about romantically. He never remembered stammering like a buffoon in front of Elisa. He sighed and shook his head at himself. "I wish there was at least a little cloud cover," He admitted, "I feel like we're too exposed up here." That was one thing he could say with certainty. The world knew they existed now thanks to the Hunters and Demona and everything that had happened. There were people specifically targeting them now. Well, more people. It was hard to know who to trust and where threats might be coming from.
He spread his wings a little farther and allowed the air to lift him higher as they soared past a few taller buildings and towards the beaches. He watched the way the moonlight scattered and danced across the ripples of the ocean and the way the sand almost glowed white in that same moonlight. Not for the first time he wondered what it was like to experience a scene like this in the daytime.
Angela couldn't help but smile at Brooklyn's response, giggling a little bit at his fumbling. He probably didn't realize how cute he was right now. Despite the fact that he appeared to be nervous (though Angela wasn't quite sure why), he was still being a good second-in-command, thinking about the mission.
As Angela should be, too.
The female Gargoyle gazed around the city, keeping her eyes open for signs of any sort of abnormal activity. The city was usually busy, even at night, so it might be difficult to tell if something out-of-the-ordinary was happening.
But Brooklyn wasn't wrong about the cloud cover; the moon was waning now, but it would still be bright enough, when it rose, to cause concern, should anyone be targeting them specifically.
And then, suddenly, Angela saw something. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but that alone could be cause to go check it out.
"What's that?" she asked Brooklyn, pointing to the area in question. "Right over there; do you see it?" Angela inquired, hoping she wasn't simply chasing shadows.
Angela's words caused Brooklyn to snap to attention and his body to tense in preparation to swoop into action at any given moment. He tilted his wings and body to slow his forward momentum so he could better assess the situation before moving on. His mind was conscious and alert even as he glanced over towards Angela to see where she had indicated and allowed his gaze to follow suit.
If there was anything that was able to keep Brooklyn focused under any circumstances, it was the prospect of keeping Angela safe. And of course protecting his home and what was left of his clan. Goliath had made him second in command and though he certainly desired to be worthy of the honor, his determination to protect Goliath and the others stemmed more from his desire not to have those responsibilities thrust upon him again anytime soon.
Brooklyn narrowed his eyes as he caught a flash of sliver in the direction that Angela had gestured. It could have been anything really. A street light glinting off a window, or someone's glasses, or even a mirror. It could have been a flash of light. It was a rather ordinary sight. Angela had been secluded so long on the shrouded island of Avalon that even the most mundane things were a wonder to her.
It was one of the reasons Brooklyn had grown to adore her so. And yet, even with her innocence, as Goliath had put it, Angela was intelligent and observant. She had good instincts in regards to danger and the abnormal and Brooklyn trusted that about her. Or perhaps he just held the other gargoyle with such a high regard he didn't think there much she could be wrong about. "I think so," Brooklyn confirmed. Even if it turned out to be nothing, there was no harm in investigating. Adjusting the position of his wings once more Brooklyn tilted forward and allowed the wind to carry him towards the ground.
Even as she had pointed out ... whatever it was she had seen to Brooklyn, Angela realized that it might be nothing. Back on Avalon, anything like that little glint of light would have signaled something unusual. After all, there were no electric lights or electricity of any kind in Avalon. Which meant that any flash like that could have been coming from swords or shields or something else that could equal danger. Yes, she'd grown up on the secluded little isle, but she and her clan were no stranger to the threats that existed. They just came in different forms.
As Brooklyn readjusted his wings so that he would be headed for the ground, Angela did the same, keeping her eyes wide open for another glimpse of the tell-tale flash she had seen. She just hoped that there would be something, whether it was a bird that had fallen and somehow caught the light or something that had fallen from a window, anything to show that she hadn't simply been seeing things.
Angela reached the ground a moment before Brooklyn, caping her wings around her as she stalked carefully forward to examine the ground between the buildings, where she'd seen something. Or where she had thought she had seen something, anyway.
Even as Brooklyn landed behind her, she crouched down, looking closer at a few pieces of glass on the ground.
"Something happened here; this isn't from a broken streetlight," she murmured to Brooklyn, looking around to see if there could be any sort of indication as to what had happened.
Brooklyn held out his wings a little longer than necessary in order to regain his balance as his feet found the ground and he took a few hasty steps forward in order to slow his momentum, keeping a sharp eye out for anything suspicious. He held his long nose up in the air and sniffed slightly. He thought he could sense a faint burning scent of some sort but that didn’t necessarily mean anything. Between humans being careless and all the restaurants in the area it wasn’t completely unusual. Otherwise there were simply the normal smells of the city. Of course he wasn’t Bronx.
Once he was certain that there was no imminent threat to the two of them, more specifically Angela, he followed her lead and caped his wings as well. He remained on guard, keeping himself alert, ears listening for anything unusual. Yes, Goliath had asked him to protect Angela, but Brooklyn would have done anything within his power to do so even without his mentor’s instruction.
Noticing Angela’s crouched position, Brooklyn knelt down beside her. His brow narrowed. Broken glass wasn’t all that unusual in the city either but finding it where Angela had potentially since some sort of unusual activity that made it that much more suspicious. He nodded at Angela’s assessment of the glass fragments. “It also isn’t worn down at all,” He agreed, reaching out to indicate the razor-like edges, “It’s still sharp which probably means it was freshly broken.” Well, sharp might not have been the best way to describe it. Jagged was probably better. Also it was still pretty clean and unsoiled. Either way, Angela was correct and it was worth looking into.
He was abruptly aware of Angela’s close proximity when he accidentally brushed against her arm. He could feel the heat of her skin and the scent of her hair grew stronger as a soft breeze blew between the buildings. Hastily, Brooklyn scrambled back to his feet. In an attempt to disguise the rush of heat he felt, he perked his ears up, trying to listen for any unusual sounds. He cleared his throat as the dug his talon into the side of the nearby building, “I’m going to try to get a better vantage.”
Angela had been focused on the piece of glass in her talons, trying to glean as much information for the shards as she could when she felt Brooklyn brush against her arm. She glanced over at him, trying to keep up the pretense that she was trying to see what he thought about the glass, but he'd already given his opinion on the matter.
It was almost a relief when he stood, declaring that he was going to get a better view of the scene.
"Good idea," Angela responded, a little bit too hastily. She didn't want him to think that she was embarrassed by being so close to him. Well, she was, but that was because she wanted him to stay that close to her. But she was still too nervous to say anything of the sort.
Even as Brooklyn was preparing to scale the building, Angela was looking around, trying to find any broken windows or something from which the shard of glass couldn't come.
She was so focused on not watching Brooklyn scale the building that she didn't realize just how hard she was gripping the piece of glass in her hand.
It wasn't until it drew blood that she yelped and dropped the glass, holding her wounded hand with her other.
Trust her to be so caught up in something else that she wasn't paying the proper attention she should have been to herself and her surroundings.
And then, just as suddenly as she'd cried out, the alley was filled with people, all wearing masks and carrying weapons.
The Quarrymen had come.
Why had they come now? Dawn was a long way off for them to be cornering their prey, and live Gargoyles were a lot harder to kill than their stone counterparts.
Angela's eyes glowed red at the sight of them and she let out a snarl, adopting a defensive stance.
Lovely. This was just what they'd needed.

Brooklyn was already halfway up the side of the building when Angela's concurring words reached his ears. He closed his eyes, his brow wrinkling in frustration, an outward indication of the painful ache inside his chest. He was different than the others. The rest of his clan seemed rather content with their situation and the hand they had been dealt. But Brooklyn wanted more than anything to have someone that he could love, who would love him in return.
The enormity in which he wanted Angela to care for him was a constant distraction in his life. He did his best to give her the space she asked for, but it was difficult not to keep his feelings in check. It was times like these he wished he could push away his feelings for the dark-haired female but no matter what he tried he could not chase her haunting eyes from his mind. It was frustrating on many levels, the current level of frustration was that he always found it difficult to focus not just on the mission, but to stay alert for danger.
He had barely crawled onto the rooftop when he heard the voices and spun around to look back down over the side of the building. His eyes narrowed as they began to glow white and he swore under his breath. This was exactly why he needed to get his heart under control. That many people shouldn't have been able to get the jump on them and if anything happened to Angela it would be on him. Goliath wouldn't even need to kill him because he would have already died trying to save her.
Having a high vantage point was an excellent way to enjoy an advantage over the Quarrymen however any thoughts of strategy had gone out of his head. The only thing at the forefront of his mind was that Angela was in danger and that these men were going to try and hurt her. Later he might reflect on how this was yet another way his feelings were keeping him from behaving rationally but that would be later. If they lived through this.
In a rage Brooklyn dove off the roof of the building, snarling like a wild animal as his talons smashed into one of the men closest to Angela and his weapon went flying. He managed to knock another of their feet with an easy swipe of his tail before turning back to the one that he still held clutched in his talons, "What are you doing here!" He demanded furiously.

A couple of Quarrymen went down upon Brooklyn's attack, but the man in the Gargoyle's talons just laughed.
"What are we doing here?" he repeated, and Angela could practically feel the smirk beneath the mask, "We're going hunting, of course," he said, as though it was the most natural thing in the world.
He signaled the others with a nod, and suddenly, the entire faction of Quarrymen in the alley was rushing towards them.
Angela didn't wait for them to reach the two Gargoyles. With a snarl, her taloned hands balled into fists as she went charging into the ranks of Quarrymen, punching anyone she could reach, using her wings and her tail to keep them from dragging her down.
She was actually doing pretty well, when it came to sheer numbers, until the second-in-command of the group charged her hammer and hit Angela in the back.
With a howl, she went down, stunned by both the impact and the electricity the hammer had used to shock her.
So infuriated was Brooklyn by the Quarryman's words that he cried out in fury, his eyes flashing. He took hold of the man he was restraining by the neck and unceremoniously slammed his head into the wall. Whether he was unconscious or dead, Brooklyn didn't know, nor in that moment did he care. If anything happened to Angela he'd kill every last one of these human wastes.
Instinct took over as waves of Quarrymen came at them from both sides of the alleyway. He met the first of them on one side head on scratching and clawing with his talons and hitting and swiping with his long tail. He even managed to gouge one man in the side with his solid and sharp horns. Gargoyles were built to fight and defend. Though they were intelligent beings, they could certainly be fearsome and primal animals when needed.
The strategist in Brooklyn knew that the pair of them needed to get out of there- Saying there were too many of them was something of an understatement- but he couldn't see any easy escape. Though they could try to climb the side of the building again as he had just done, their numbers were great and it was very unlikely that the two of them would be able to climb quickly enough to escape their grasp or the reach of their accused weapons.
Angela's cry broke through his escape scenarios and he spun around to where his comrade lay on the ground. She was still moving but now at a disadvantage. Something clenched inside Brooklyn. If something happened to her, no punishment Goliath could contrive would even compare to the despair, guilt, and pain Brooklyn would be riddled with for the rest of whatever existence he might have left.
Apparently some wayward Quarryman had decided to take advantage of Brooklyn's distractedness, because a moment later he too felt the cold metal of a hammer slamming into his back. The red gargoyle swiped out blindly with his tail and was able to take his attacker down but not before he felt the electricity surging through him, threatening to shock him into unconsciousness or worse. He staggered forward a few steps and somehow managed to stay on his feet.
Push through it, Brooklyn. He demanded of himself and threw himself forward on top of Angela's attacker, "You leave her alone!" He snarled.
(OOC: I didn't think distractedness was a word either but I looked it up and here we are. Also if we're still getting them kidnapped we can do that whenever you're ready.)
Angela tried to get up, but the woman who had hit her grabbed both of the Gargoyle's wings and pinioned them behind her, effectively keeping her from raising herself to a standing position. It left Angela at a disadvantage, being on the ground. Gargoyles were still dangerous, even when they were kept from their full potential, but with how many Quarrymen were here, even if she was at full strength, she and Brooklyn would be in trouble.
And then she saw another member of the group go after Brooklyn with a charged hammer.
"No!" she shouted, trying to free herself from the hold the woman had on her, but in vain. As soon as she even attempted to pull away, the woman had gestured another Quarryman over to help restrain the Gargoyle.
The woman who had initially attacked Angela fell backward before Brooklyn's attack. Drawing her hammer up again, she laughed at the red-skinned Gargoyle's words.
"Leave her alone? She's the reason we're here, vermin. We know that she's your leader's daughter and we're going to use that to our advantage. Taking you in is just a bonus."
At the woman's words, Angela stared, horrified. She had never even considered this sort of thing before, and now, she was going to be used against the Clan.
"No, Brooklyn, just go! I'll hold them off; get out of here!" she shouted, wrenching her wings free from the grasp the Quarryman had had on her.
But it was a short-lived victory. It was only a moment later that several Quarrymen had surrounded her again and taken hold of her.
"Take them both," the now-leader commanded, using her hammer to direct her minions.
Recovering from getting hit by an electric hammer was slow at best. Brooklyn's movements were getting more erratic since he wasn't able to stay as alert as he needed to be in a situation where he was so outnumbered. Lashing out with his tail and claws, snapping at everything that moved to keep them at a distance, it was all he could do in his current position. He remained as rational as he was able to, though his anger was causing him to see nothing but red, as the woman spoke.
For a moment he didn't understand how the Quarrymen would have been able to figure out that Angela was directly related to Goliath but the events of the past few months quickly came back to him. John, the leader of these infuriating Quarrymen was one of the hunters and they had been stalking them all that time and had at one point mistaken Angela for Demona and almost killed her. That was how they knew. Goliath had almost massacred the lot of them for that and Brooklyn wouldn't have been first in line to stop them.
It made Brooklyn extremely uneasy to see the way the woman seemed to manhandle Angela. Well it also made him extremely angry, but mostly uneasy. Gargoyle strength was nothing to be scoffed at and if the singular woman was able to restrain Angela by only pinning her wings back while on the ground or simply with the help of one other person in a standing position, there was more to this group than they were letting on. Were they using sorcery? If that was the case, all of them were in a lot more trouble than they knew.
He knew Angela must be getting tired as well, he knew he was. And having taken a hit from one of their weapons didn't help his cause by any means.
Brooklyn had no idea how the woman he'd thrown himself at to stop her restraining Angela had managed to escape from under him and again the fear of the Quarrymen using sorcery flickered across his mind. At that same woman's command the Quarrymen began to swarm. They threw themselves on top of him one after the other until he couldn't even see Angela anymore. He felt the lot of them pressing down upon him and while holding his great beak shut, they wrapped his face to cover his eyes and he could no longer see anything. Though he couldn't see her, he could still hear Angela's battle cries. He fought harder to escape the pile of apparently suicidal Quarrymen until he felt another hammer hit his back. Then he felt nothing.
OOC: If you want me to change anything you know where I am Also I wasn't sure where you wanted to go from here so if you wanted to talk it out I can write more otherwise I'm good with wherever you wanna go.
