Character Name: Basil
Gender: Male
Type of Creature: Mouse
Rank: Force of Good
Movie/TV Series:The Great Mouse Detective
Home Island:Isle of the Sword
Personality:
You may call it peer pressure, idol worship or just the environment he was raised in, but for some reason Basil has taken on the personality traits of the famous detective living above his home. Clever, observant and cynical. A natural loner who finds little need for socialising outside his companionship with his friend Dr Dawson, his tracking hound Toby and his client. No interest in romance or indeed any member of the opposite gender. Socially or solitary, Basil can ramble for hours about his work whilst he scurries around carrying out physical tasks with a seemingly limitless energy. All of this wrapped up in an ego bigger rivaling Gaston.
Basil balances out his detective skills with absurdly bad manners. His social skills leave much to be desired as he treats others like children and treats children like an annoyance that should be removed from the room as fast as possible. He will spend hours carrying out dangerous experiments involving violent chemical reactions, lethal weaponry or property damage without regard to those around him, even risking them as unwilling assistants. When others interest him he'll give almost his full attention as he only memorises facts he finds important and instantly dismissing what he doesn't (unfortunately sometimes including their names).
Thanks to the influence of Dawson and Olivia, Basil has managed to open up with others more often compared to his early detective career. He is willing to throw himself into mortal peril to help out a friend or client in trouble, though his mental facilities are still running on full steam so that he won't put them in further risk. He will however still show irritation with being interrupted or upstaged.
To his enemies Basil is a tenacious and implacable force. His enemies have witnessed how much he is willing to hound them until they receive just punishment under the law. This trait has a downside as he slips into periods of depression when he hits a dead end or is outmatched even slightly, at which point he'll slip into a catatonic state or play his violin if available. When new opportunity or inspiration hits however he will instantly spring back into his energetic mood.
Finally Basil does not take well to humiliation or ridicule. Seeing Toby the hound take orders from others caused him to huff for several hours whilst the mockery he faced after being ambushed by Professor Rattigan left him standing solid and mute with rage. When he regains the upper hand however he will not hesitate to push any emotional buttons to enrage others to prevent them thinking clearly during a confrontation.
Powers, Skills, and/or Any Other Abilities:
Master detective: Basil has on many occasions proven himself the scourge of the criminal underworld in mousedom. His most impressive talent is being able to tell a large amount of detail and history from a persons appearance or how they handle themselves.
Jack of all topics: To aid in his work Basil has studied many sciences. His home is overflowing with books and equipment used for his crime solving.
Trajectory multiplied by the square root of a triangle: His study of physics allows Basil to perfectly predict the outcome of many fast moving objects giving him great accuracy with projectiles or an almost flawless evasive ability.
Master of disguise: His infamy among the lawless requires Basil to keep a large supply of costumes. He can whip up a whole new look in a short time and has perfected several accents to go with the appearance. When finished with the subterfuge he can almost instantly change back to his usual clothing.
You a man or a mouse?: Whilst his species makes him smaller than almost every member of the other kingdoms, Basil can still use his natural form to evade larger opponents, climb quickly or access small areas
Weaknesses:
All me, me, me: Basils ego is his greatest weakness. If outsmarted or if someone else can complete a task that gives him difficulty. As mentioned in personality he doesn't handle mockery well. His depressed periods can last for some time until he is shocked back into action.
Not quite mighty mouse: Despite his talents, Basil is still a mouse and as such is at risk when facing larger opponents. In straight combat without hiding places or a few seconds for a breather or planning session he would be in a lot of trouble. He would be particularly vulnerable to creatures that feed on small rodents such as cats or snakes. He could also be hunted easily by these creatures.
I'm sure this can all be explained logically: As a man of science Basil is skeptical of magic and would not have the faith needed to use it in any effective manner (if at all). As such he could also be very vulnerable to magical attack from the many villains who use it. Beneficial magic used by others to help him could go either way depending on how much cooperation the user needs from Basil.
Canon History:
After the kidnapping of the toymaker Flaversham by a crazed bat, his daughter Olivia Flaversham was taken by former Army Doctor Dawson to Baker Street to consult the famous Basil. Finding the home initially empty they were startled by Basil bursting in wearing a bizarre asian disguise brandishing a loaded handgun which he proceeded to fire into a stack of cushions. After studying the fired round and failing to match with another the detective immediately calmed down long enough for Olivia to tell her story. Upon her description of the kidnapper, a peg legged bat with a crooked wing named Fidget, Basil accepted the case proclaiming that it was his chance to capture his arch enemy, the Napoleon of Crime Professor Ratigan.
Using the dog Toby as a transport, the detective and his companions investigated a toystore that Fidget had broken into. An ambush by the bat led to the kidnapping of Olivia but revealed both a list of items to be stolen for Ratigans plan and that several mechanical toys had been stripped of parts.
After donning disguises Basil and Dawson went undercover in a dockside bar to gain insight from the thugs and lowlifes that frequented it. Unfortunately this turned out to be an ambush plotted by Ratigan, who claimed he had been toying with the detective for years. Since his victory was assured the mastermind revealed his plot, a robotic duplicate of the Queen built by Flaversham who would name Ratigan as the Royal Consort at the sixty year jubilee. With the real Queen held by criminals disguised as royal guards (using the stolen toy outfits). Basil and Dawson were left in a death-trap as the villains departed. A record player hooked up to several weapons and a camera (for taking a photograph of the messy results)
Almost catatonic from his failure Basil had to be shocked back into action by Dawson, triggering the death-trap early so that each of the attached weapons would disable each other and free the pair. Arriving at the coronation where Ratigan was using his ill gotten title to pass an absurd amount of tyrannical demands, Basil took over control of the robot queen and exposed the scheme, driving the villain into a feral rage by calling him by his most hated of insults, a sewer rat.
The battle led into a high altitude chase, then a battle inside the gears of Big Ben. Basil led the now insane rat to the clock face. At the stroke of ten the moving hands shook off the two arch foes, Basil managed to save himself however by grabbing enough pieces of Ratigans airship to provide a safe landing.
After a heartfelt goodbye to the Flavershams, Basil and Dawson settled down to record the adventure. However a new client burst in to hire the detective. Introducing Dawson as his partner, the two would look forward to many future adventures.
Game Information:
With the opening of the other kingdoms and the alliance of evil forces, the Queen of Mousedom has sent envoys to the smallest heroes of the world; Basil has of course jumped at the call. Not like a loyal Englishmouse would leave it to the Rescue Rangers right?
Anything Else:
..:: Sample Post ::..
In the palace of the desert kingdom of Agrabah, the Sultan and his chief guard Razoul stood with their ears pressed against the roof of a small model of the building. The sound of the clockwork parts overlapping with a conversation going on inside.
"Observe Dawson. According to this model the room we are in should be almost perfectly square, however the actual room just outside has the east wall inwards by a good four feet according to my calculations, so we have some space to account for."
Stepping out of the front of the model came the famous Basil of Baker Street carrying one end of a tape measure. His assistant Dr Dawson carrying the other end. Basil used the measure as a safety line as he dropped off the end of the table, letting the device spring back up and sending Dawson rolling.
"Your highness, if you'd please follow me. Dawson? Enough of the games, we're with royalty."
Leading the others over to the east wall Basil folded his arms and took a long glare at the architecture. Eventually inspiration hit as he pulled on the corner of a tapestry opening a hidden door and revealing a dark brick walled tunnel contrasting with the bright decor of the palace. Razoul grabbed a wall torch to light the way as Basil continued on into a large chamber concealed in one of the towers. A device in the centre of the room sparked electricity illuminating the other bizarre contraptions laid out on various tables. Some time back these collections of dark sorcery and mad science were the tools of a traitorous advisor. Another burst of lightning arced into a staff with a cobra design.
"Oh my." The Sultan hid behind the stoic Razoul to avoid stray sparks from the generator.
"Indeed your highness." Basil straightened his deerstalker cap. "This would be the personal laboratory of the infamous Jafar. As you and the princess told me the last time you were in here you had more pressing matters to attend to than finding the mechanism to reopen it. I'd suggest you instruct your guards to have these devices dismantled for safety. The forces of evil should be denied any source of potential weapons that they might attempt to aquire. Why hello." rushing across the room and up a small spiral staircase he inspected a small stationary bike hooked up to the generator. "Dawson, help me get this one packed up and into Tobys pack. I could find use for this back in Baker Street.
Razoul rolled his eyes. Bad enough they already had a street rat playing at being a prince, now they had a mouse playing at being a detective.
