The massive carriage that Hades had gifted to Maleficent was absolutely exquisite. Sleek, shiny, and black with silvery accents, it was quite the sight rolling silently as the dead down the streets of Louisianatown. Hitched to the front were two enormous black Friesian horses pulling the coach along at an easy pace, the lovely waves in their long manes and tails fluttering in the easy evening breeze. Only moments before they had been airborne, the horses moving faster than was natural for any mundane creature, appearing little more than a black smudge against the rainbowing sky of the setting sun as they spirited their mistress to her destination.
To say Maleficent didn't go out much was an understatement. Even before her imprisonment in the Forever Stone she preferred the darkness, solitude, and quiet of her mountain lands. The company out there wasn't exactly of superior quality and their competence level could stand improvement, but at least the rabble listened when she ordered them about and otherwise left her alone which she appreciated. In general it was far simpler and convenient to her wants to send an emissary or use magical means of communication than to waste her time and energy seeking audiences with others whom which she might wish to contact.
Even now the fairy could have easily have simply sent an envoy though whom she could convey her message and waited for a response or she could have used her abilities to transport herself to her destination and could theoretically already have concluded her business and returned home, but Maleficent felt rather strongly that this exchange could use a personal touch. She also had the desire to get out. Though she did not remember much of having being imprisoned, she still found herself pacing about and anxious, feeling the need to breathe the outside air. Visiting this place would not only cure the claustrophobic feelings she'd been having but she would also sate her curiosity about the town and establishment the man she was dealing with inhabited. Most importantly she didn't want anyone to take note of the energy surge her powers would cause. Anyone tracking mystical energies or possessing magical abilities themselves would be able to sense her arrival and she didn't want to attract any unwanted attention.
Her rare ventures into the outside world were commonly met with anxious looks and wary gazes- similar to the ones her carriage was receiving as it continued to traverse the streets, the only sound coming from the quiet clopping of Black and Dark's hooves. Though that sort of reception was easily disregarded, Maleficent far preferred the company of those who were of like mind and on a more equal footing with her. It livened up a rather droll eternal existence. Though whether the intended party would fit that description remained to be seen.
The town sidewalks and shops weren't empty and instead were actually quite crowded with locals bustling about with their evening activities. Somewhere nearby Maleficent could hear music. A lone soulful instrument played a smooth haunting tune that echoed off the tall buildings with their intricate design and ornate balconies. Its sound was likened to a trumpet or some other instrument of brass though the fairy couldn't be certain exactly what she was hearing.
Nor did she care.
The carriage rolled to a stop, the horses knowing exactly where Maleficent wanted to go without a driver to guide them. The door to the coach opened all on its own and Maleficent stepped out onto the stone sidewalks, holding a hand over her eyes as she gazed about. It was hot here, hotter than she was used to dealing with, and the air was thick and heavy with moisture like it might rain, though there wasn't a cloud to be seen. Louisianatown was certainly not somewhere that Maleficent was going to be relocating to anytime soon if she could avoid it.
Once she had vacated the cabin, the coach door swung shut on its own. The horses remained obediently where they were and oddly enough no one game the carriage a second glance now, as though they could no longer see it, though oddly enough none of the passing cars or civilians came close to colliding with it. The heels of her boots clicked on the ground as she followed the sidewalk down a few feet and turned into a nearby alleyway.
Much like the main street the alley was showing its age. Parts of the outer coating had chipped off over time leaving the brick beneath exposed. Metal bars and pipes bore the telltale signs of rust and paint was chipping or rubbing off wooden structures in various places. The alley opened up into a small courtyard with a twisted tree, the light from the setting sun casting peculiar shadows about the area. Soon enough Maleficent found herself standing in front of an almost imperceptible door with faded purple paint set into the corner of the courtyard, various symbols and designs were etched onto it surface and the surrounding walls. A small sign over the door above three burning skulls with red eyes read, Dr. Facilier's Voodoo Emporium.
Others might have thought it rather ominous but Maleficent found it rather... quaint. Without giving the rather disturbing totem-like statue from which an innumerable amount of thick steel nails protruded located in a corner near the door a second glance, Maleficent put a hand on the rusty looking doorknob and turned it, letting herself into the shop wondering briefly how her unannounced visit would be received.
(OOC: It's up to you if Facilier knows who Maleficent is. They would never have met before but he could easily have heard of her or know who she is.)

Dr. Facilier wasn't ... entirely certain how he'd escaped imprisonment in the Forever Stone. He hadn't exactly been able to pay his ... "friends" the debt he'd amassed. The only explanation that Facilier had been able to come up with was that Baron Samedi had taken pity on him and had spare him the fate that had befallen so many others.
Which meant that he had a second chance. If Baron Samedi had interceded on his behalf, then Facilier owed it to him to do a better job this time around. Considering the Baron's ... rather changeable nature, Facilier wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do better.
It was perhaps because of this uncertainty that he hadn't ventured forth out of his shop that much, in recent times. Facilier knew that he should relocate, but he had purchased this shop with his own sweat, blood, and hard work, and he was loath to leave it behind. It wasn't the shop itself that mattered to him; ti was how hard he had worked for it over the years. It would take him quite some time to be able to come up with enough money to allow him to buy another shop elsewhere, especially considering that he wouldn't be able to sell this one because of his ... reputation.
Instead of going out, he'd been practicing his sleight of hand. He was, after all, going to have to rely on his own skills as a magician and illusionist now that he'd been stripped of his shadow and his "friends." His skills were a little bit rusty, but he'd once been quite the skilled showman without any supernatural assistance; he was determined to return to that level of ability.
From time to time, he mounted the stage in his shop and performed to an "audience," practicing his ventriloquism and projection, a skillset that had been disused entirely during his partnership with the Other Side.
The Tarot was still something with which he was practically a virtuoso; he didn't read his own cards, but he could name every card in the deck, and several different meanings that the card could hold, depending on whether or not it was in reverse and in different combinations.
He was going through the deck in just such a way, laying each card out and saying aloud what it could mean, when the door to his Emporium opened, admitted a woman of which he'd only heard rumors: Maleficent. Even without his Friends on the Other Side, Facilier could feel the power practically radiating from her. She was tall, regal, and beautiful, and she could be absolutely deadly.
"My Lady," Dr. Facilier greeted her, sweeping his hat off of his head and into a low bow in the same, fluid motion. "To what do I owe this great honor?" he asked, remaining in his position of reverence and respect. She was one of the most powerful beings in the realm, and she deserved the proper deference.

The shop was just as quaint on the inside. Shelves of books, large vases, and jars and bottles of different sizes lined the walls while carved tiki-like masks were suspended rather ominously from the ceiling. Handmade dolls with button eyes, candles, beaded jewelry, and other baubles and trinkets were arbitrarily scattered on small tables around the shop and heavy tapestries with intricate patterns and designs were tacked to the walls. Most of the room was lit only by what light spilled out of the back alcove.
In the back of the shop there was a more intimate area separated from the rest of the store by thick tattered curtains. Long frayed rugs ran the length of the room creating a path towards the curved steps that lead to a raised circular platform. Another worn rug lay across the top of the platform. On top of the platform rested an ornate table covered in a decorative cloth and surrounded on three sides by elegant chairs, the middle one more of a throne than a chair. A spidery old fashioned hung over the center of the table illuminating the curtained area a bit better than the rest of the shop.
Maleficent’s eyes came to rest on the lithe and wirey figure of the man she had come to see sitting so silently in the back alcove of the shop she didn’t notice him at first. His smooth voice cut through the thick scent of incense that permeated the shop and she took a few steps forward, gown trailing behind and staff thudding gently against the carpet. The respectful bow he presented her with pleased her more than she was willing to admit and a corner of her mouth crept up in a half smile. It pleased her just as much to know that she needed no introduction.
Diablo launched himself into the air and came to rest on one of the nearby rafters, staring down at Facilier with that unflinching gaze of his while Maleficent gave an acknowledging nod to her host. “Doctor Facilier, I presume?” It was more of a statement than a question, “You honor me. Please, stand.” She gestured with a simple upturned hand to emphasize her statement. “I’ve come to see how you’ve been getting along.” It wasn’t a lie but it wasn’t exactly the whole truth.

He stood as she gave him leave, replacing his hat on his head as he straightened. With a quick motion, he scooped his precious deck of Tarot cards from the table and placed them in the secret pocket inside his tailcoat, moving away from his own chair so that he could offer it to Maleficent.
"I'm honored by the concern, Lady," Facilier said, knowing that there was more to it than simple concern. He'd once had a partnership with the Other Side, which had made him .... powerful. As he was now, he was still a magician, but he didn't have the same abilities as he once had, to transform, to trick, and to take what the city owed to him, but would never give to him.
"Care to sit, my Lady?" he asked, pulling out the chair in which he normally sat, presenting it to the powerful woman. She was the more powerful, so of course she should have his best chair, just as she had him at her disposal.
Facilier knew, of course, about the Forever Stone and what it had been supposed to do, but obviously, it had not been quite able to contain the amount of power that foolish fairies had tried to force into it.
"And as for how I'm getting along," he started, finally moving to answer her question, as soon as he'd made her comfortable, "without my ... Friends from the Other Side, I have to rely on my own skills." Which he was working on strengthening. But considering, he thought that he was doing quite well.
"Is there something you wanted me to do for you, Lady?" he asked, quite curious as to the real reason for her sudden visit. She almost certainly hadn't come all this way simply to inquire after his health.
Silently accepting the offer to sit, Maleficent moved forward, crossing the remainder of the room in only a few strides. Her robes dragged the ground and she delicately reached down with her free hand to lift her skirts as she ascended the few steps that led the platform on which Facilier stood. She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the brighter light.
As he continued to speak, Maleficent leaned heavily on her staff and sank down into the chair which was much more comfortable than she now realized that she thought it would be. She sometimes felt as though she bore a great weight on her shoulders a weight that was always pressing down on her and despite all the time she spent in the carriage, it felt good to sit again.
“Actually, there is something I wanted to do for you.” Maleficent said as she adjusted the fabric of her robes and leaned her great golden staff gingerly against the nearby wall. She turned her head, shifting her body again and craning her neck slightly to look at Facilier. She nodded her thanks and waited for him to take his own seat before proceeding. She shifted again, resting her elbows gently on the arms of the chair. She tilted her head thoughtfully, “In a way it involves your …friends.”

To say that he wasn't surprised by the fact that Maleficent wanted to do something for him as opposed to the other way around would have been a lie. He was quite surprised by the offer, even more so when she mentioned that it concerned his ... friends.
"I'm flattered, Lady," he told her, sitting up a bit straighter in his chair. "I'm afraid I have to ask what exactly you mean, by your offer," he continued. Facilier knew (boy, did he know) that words could easily be twisted around and meanings could be changed. Which was why he was asking for clarification.
After all, he was one of the people who could so easily manipulate a person's literal wording to his advantage, even if that wasn't quite what they'd meant. It was a trick he'd learned at a relatively young age and one which he had spent his life perfecting.
Which meant that one couldn't be too careful, especially dealing with such a powerful being as Maleficent.
If she wanted to help him because she wanted him to help her in return, that was one thing, but he highly doubted she was doing this out of the .... goodness of her heart.
"I haven't exactly made an offer of any sort yet, now have I?" Maleficent responded smoothly though not unkindly. She delicately laced her fingers together as much as she could reach from where her elbows yet rested comfortably on the arms of the chair. Her gaze rested on Facilier's lithe form who seemed even taller somehow as he shifted his posture to sit straighter in his chair. Good, his interest was clearly peaked. Really it was no matter to Maleficent one way or the other if he decided to accept what she had to offer but she would rather have not made the trip all the way out here on a lost cause.
"As I said, there is something I would like to do for you. I think it's terribly unfair that someone with your natural abilities an potential has been reduced to palm readings and card tricks." She unfolded her hands and shifted in the seat leaning off to once side as she continued, "I've no disdain for your chosen vocation but I do feel your skills are wasted here. You have a gift Facilier. A natural charisma and aptitude for charming even the strong-willed into giving you whatever you desire. I have a friend with many of those same qualities. Really it is because of him that I am here."
She shifted in her seat once more, catching his gaze in her own as she sat up straight and leaned forward ever so slightly, "What would you say if I told you I could restore your powers?"

When Maleficent corrected him, Facilier realized that, no, she hadn't exactly made an offer yet. She had asked a hypothetical question, and he had jumped to conclusions.
He was about to apologize for his rudeness when Maleficent continued speaking. Her words ... surprised him a little. She was complimenting him, Maleficent, the self-proclaimed Mistress of all Evil was paying him, Dr. Marion Facilier, a little nobody from New Orleans, practically the highest compliments that someone like him could receive.
"Truly, you flatter me, Lady," he said, bowing his head ever-so-slightly in a show of respect and gratitude at her praise.
And then, she posed another hypothetical question, one that was more of an offer than before, but still not quite the same thing.
He would have to choose his words carefully.
"I would be ... very grateful, and very interested," he responded, taking time to think about the way he would word his next comment. "If you would choose to do such a thing, Lady, I would only request my Shadow. I would be ... more useful without my .... 'friends.'"
It was very odd, he had to admit, being without a shadow. Even if she could return his regular shadow, he would be grateful.
Bowing his head in her direction, he added, "I would, of course, offer whatever I might be able to in return, should you choose to restore my shadow."
Maleficent lifted her chin and began absently drumming the fingers of her left hand on the arm or the chair. Hades had given her leave to restore Facilier's powers completely. To repair the severed link between the man and powerful dark spirits of the Underworld that answered to Hades himself. Not only did those abilities allow the Shadow Man to better serve his... clients, but it was those powers that allowed him to actually collect the souls of those he was able to... help.
Restoring his abilities was not just about granting him a boon, but it was also about Hades regaining the flow of souls that Facilier's antics produced.
However, at this time Hades priorities had shifted, as had all of Maleficent's allies. Though someday Hades would once again be looking to increase the number of residents in his realm, right now just like everyone else he wanted revenge on those that had imprisoned him.
If Facilier only wished to have his sentient shadow restored to him and not his complete power set, who was she to argue with him? He had agreed to anything in return for the smallest of favors. They would still achieve the same end, but would have to give less. Maleficent was certainly no expert in dealings like Hades, or even the man in front of her, but she was no fool. She was getting the better end of this deal.
"Very well." Maleficent held up her right arm and gave a flick of her splayed hand, "It's done." And it was. Just like that. "You are aware, no doubt, of the circumstances that befell us and our fellow comrades. We seek retribution for the injustice of it all. In return for this gift of your shadow, you will help us however we may have need of you."

Once he'd spoken, Facilier wasn't sure what to expect. Though he was practically in the business of making predictions, it wasn't easy to foresee how a woman like Maleficent might react to what he'd said.
But with a wave of her hand, his shadow was restored.
Facilier could practically feel its presence the moment Maleficent had restored it. He'd been without even a regular shadow for so long that he knew immediately when that changed.
The required compensation for the return of his shadow didn't seem too unbearable; in this way, he could serve Baron Samedi in a way that the loa demanded. He would have to figure out a way to serve the loa in a different way, as well, though. Facilier wasn't sure how he'd manage to do that, but he'd figure it out sooner or later. He would just have to ask the Baron for ideas.
He bowed his head at Maleficent's words.
"I would be honored to help your cause, Lady," he said, looking back up at her. "It would be my pleasure to do whatever will be required of me."
He knew there were risks involved, but there were risks involved in living as a Creole man in New Orleans; he would be able to handle whatever it was.
Maleficent eyed Fusilier once more before reaching out to clutch at her staff where it rested on the wall. "Then it seems our business is concluded for now." Leaning heavily on the staff Maleficent gathered her robes carefully in her slender hands before rising back to her feet. "I am pleased we were able to reach a suitable agreement so quickly." She told the man, feeling rather amiable in the success of her mission.
The Mistress of Evil certainly had other things to do and as quaint as Facilier's shop was, she really needed to return to her home. There were so many others to approach and deals to strike. Though she had no doubt that she already had the loyalty of a handful of like-minded individuals, there were others like Facilier who were not yet aligned one way or the other and she wanted to make sure to have them well within her grasp before others thought to seek them out.
"Unless there is anything else, I'd best be on my way." She spoke words quite similar to those she'd said to Stephan and Leah on the day Aurora was christened. She made her way down the steps and back towards the door leading out of the shop and then turned back to face the proprietor, "Thank you for your cooperation Doctor Facilier. I will call on you again when the time comes."
Twisting the knob Maleficent pulled the door open. Lowering her head ever so slightly so her headdress didn't get knocked on the top of the frame, she swept silently from the shop and into the shadow ridden alleyway.
