At the highest point in Manhattan, or indeed the entirety of New York, stood the unconquered Castle Wyvern. Perched atop the Eyrie building after being transported stone by stone from Scotland, it was initially seen as a money wasting display of power by David Xanatos until the public reveal of the clan of Gargoyles who protected the castle. For some time the nocturnal creatures led by Goliath had seen Xanatos as an enemy, exiling themselves to a new roost. Xanatos and Goliath had thankfully improved relations given the more chaotic elements they had encountered such as the Godlike children of Oberon and rogue Pack mercenaries. Following the actions of Jason and Jon Canmore and their bombing of the 23rd Precinct clock tower, the clan were able to return to their home in the castle and share an uneasy truce. Security in the building was heavily overhauled during the day, aside from the usual Steel Clan platoon there were eagle eyed marksmen, trained hand to hand combatants, turrets, a small fleet of robots and even an attack helicopter ready to respond quickly to any attack. The only recent problems had involved a group of hooded bigots calling themselves the Quarrymen stirring up protesters at ground level, spouting vicious slander about Gargolyes eating children and the 'species traitor' Xanatos breeding an army of flying monsters. Since they were unfortunatly smart enough to stay outside the building it was a matter for the police so far. Tonight up in the castle courtyard a different manner of combat was occuring.
"Parry. Thrust. Deflect." Barked the instructor as he attacked with his foil, increasing speed steadily.
His pupil, the aformentioned David Xanatos, matched each action with his own foil and the appropriate counter move. Both men were clad in standard, thick cotton fencing uniforms and masks as they stepped forward and backwards in the castle courtyard. David had employed a series of instructors of various combat styles to improve his skills. Protecting his family and company was both a physically and financially strenuous job, but well worth the effort. His wife Fox and son Alexander were currently taking some time away from New York, Fox using her own considerable resources to prepare similar precautions on her end.
"You're letting your mind wander David." The instructor swept his weapon at neck level. Xanatos responded with a purely reflexive sweep kick that toppled his teacher, followed by pointing his foil at the prone mans heart.
"I don't remember teaching you that."
"Sorry about that." David lowered his sword and helped the man up. Crossing the courtyard to a small folding table both men claimed a bottle of water and removed their masks. "I saw an opening and had to take it."
"Now THAT I taught you lad. I guess that's it until your next lesson."
"Until next week then. Owen will call security, make sure you get to your car safetly."
As the fencing teacher left via the rooftop elevator, Xanatos sat down on the edge of the stairs leading up to one of the castle towers. One hand kept a firm grip on his foil as the other wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"You've been watching long enough. Why don't you come on out of hiding?"
Having grown up on the mystical isle of Avalon, Angela was continually fascinated by the idea of fencing. Tom, the Guardian of the eggs, had a sword, but it was much different than the tiny swords (foils, they were called) Xanatos was using for his fencing lesson.
The sun had already gone down when she had heard the tell-tale signs of a swordfight. However, when she had located the place where the sounds were coming from, a very different sight met her eyes. This was no frantic fight, desperate to stay alive for as long as possible, which could have meant eliminating one's opponent; it was some sort of ... game, it almost seemed, to Angela's eyes.
She watched as the instructor told Xanatos that his mind was wandering, at which point Xanatos pulled a move that Angela was sure had to be illegal when it came to the rules of fencing. The instructor didn't seem to mind, however; in fact, the man seemed pleased with the billionaire's thought processes.
Angela continued to observe from her hiding place, wondering what the rules of fencing actually were. It was too bad, she thought, that she would never really need or be able to use a sword; they were such beautiful weapons. Tom had taught her an appreciation for the sword itself and how he was able to use the weapon with such ease. It was true, he hadn't really needed to use his sword until Oberon and his children had returned to Avalon, but he always kept in practice, gladly explaining things to the curious Angela when she had questions.
The Gargoyle was so lost in thoughts of the past that she didn't notice the instructor leaving. It was only when Xanatos spoke that she was brought back to the present.
Slightly sheepishly, she stepped out from where she'd been hiding, wings caped around her. "How did you know I was there?" she asked, quite curious as to the answer. She'd thought that she had chosen the perfect place to see and not be seen, but apparently, she'd been incorrect. Then again, Xanatos probably knew quite a bit about Castle Wyvern, though not quite as much as her father and the rest of the clan. It was, after all, their ancestral home.

"Actually I say that every time I'm supposed to be alone in case someone is listening. Just some healthy paranoia."
David kept a straight face for a few seconds before letting out a short laugh at the joke. He hadn't talked with Angela as much as the rest of the clan but he knew that being raised in Avalon she'd be somewhat sheltered and still learning about the world, especially in Manhattan. It wouldn't be wise to tease her with overprotective parents like Goliath and Demona. Point one: They both had a temper, Point two: That temper might be hereditary and Point three: Xanatos had yet to perfect that whole immortality deal.
"Sorry. I jest. After sundown security takes a scan of the towers. Just keeping an eye out for everyone. I noticed most of the clan left the tower tonight except for one. Since that one didn't go straight for the library that rules Broadway out and Alex is out of town with his mother so Lexington didn't drop in to say hi."
In truth he had more than one scan going at sundown but there was no reason to lay all his cards on the table should this conversation get back to Goliath. Xanatos stood up and walked over to the equipment table, opening a case to put his foil away now that Angela had revealed herself. He didn't consider her a danger while she had the clan as her family. If she had been living with Demona however he'd likely keep a high powered weapon handy. David wondered if gargoyle parents living apart had such a concept as shared custody of their children. The last thing anyone needed was someone trying another 'wipe out humanity' plot like summoning Puck or turning people to stone.
"So is there something I can help you with? If you were looking to join the class I'd be happy to cover the instructor fees."
For a moment, Angela stared at the man who was, effectively, their host. She wasn't quite sure what he meant or whether or not she was supposed to find that funny or ... what. When he started laughing, though, Angela joined in, finally understanding that it was, in fact, a joke.
She still wasn't sure how she felt about this man, the man called David Xanatos. Apparently, most of the Manhattan Clan felt that he couldn't be trusted, but Angela still wasn't sure. As a Gargoyle who had been raised on the isle of Avalon, she had been raised by humans, which meant that her natural instinct was to trust most of them. And Princess Katherine would tell her to give this man the benefit of the doubt, until he proved otherwise.
"Oh!" she said in response to his mention of scans, "Oh, yes, that makes sense," she agreed. He had most likely always had something of the kind set up, but it made more sense than ever to be on guard, what with the Forever Stone broken.
When Xanatos actually asked her if there was something he could help her with, Angela's face held the Gargoyle equivalent of a blush. "Not really," she admitted, looking down at the castle's floor beneath her feet. "I heard the sounds of a swordfight and I came to investigate," she explained, even as she realized that Xanatos had asked her a question.
The realization of what that question was though, made Angela stare in surprise and delight.
"Really?" she asked, obviously excited by the idea, "I've always wanted to learn how to use a sword, but since I didn't need one, we weren't really taught swordplay," she added, quite thrilled at the possibility of learning, at last. "Oh, thank you!" she cried, impulsively hugging the billionaire, she was so pleased with his offer.

"Woah. Easy there Angie."
Xanatos seized up when Angela hugged him. He'd seen gargoyles cut several inches into stone and metal, glide while carrying fully grown humans (or heavier) and Demona used to lug around a shoulder fired laser cannon like a roll of paper. He could be forgiven for worrying about the daughter of Goliath breaking a few ribs in an accident caused by her excitement.
"Why don't we go inside and I'll fill out the forms?"
When he was released David led the way inside one of the elevators installed into the castle. A few aides passed by to clear the fencing equipment. A few moments later the two entered Xantos main office, the lights activated on entry as David sat at his desk and started typing at his personal computer.
"Of course I'll need your fathers permission for this. I'm a parent myself and wouldn't think to override his judgement, at least when it ocmes to our children. I'd like to think he'd respect allowing you to learn new ways to protect yourself. Your natural abilities only take you so far and you don't want to get too dependant on them. Did the clan happen to fill you in on what happened when Puck first turned up?"
Xanatos turned one of his monitors so that Angela could see what he was talking about. Security tapes from a few years back when Demona tried to force Puck to destroy humanity. A series of verbal loopholes allowed the trickster to invert the status quo, turning the clan into humans and the population of Manhattan into gargoyles. In this particular tape Brooklyn, Broadway and Lexington had seized various melee weapons to attack Puck. Due to lack of training and the loss of their gliding ability they swung clumsily and were easy pickings for bizarre magic counter attacks such as a giant sunflower and a carnivorous parasol.
"Fun times." David chuckled as he printed off an application form and started filling in the details.
Angela didn't have a chance to ask that Xanatos refrain from calling her "Angie;" he was already headed inside to fill out the necessary paperwork that would enable her to learn how to fence.
When she thought about that, the very idea of correcting Xanatos about her name flew out of her head, she was so very excited. The young Gargoyle had watched Tom, the Guardian of the Gargoyle eggs, wield his sword for years, and she'd always been fascinated by the idea of learning to use one, herself. But as she'd told Xanatos, she'd never needed a sword; she had her talons, her tail, and her Gargoyle strength on which to rely.
"I hope he sees it the way that you do," Angela said in response to Xanatos' assertion that they would need Goliath's permission before Angela would be allowed to learn how to fence.
And the video that Xanatos showed her of the clan transformed into humans, unable to rely on their Gargoyle attributes, was exactly why Angela wanted to be able to use other weapons. With all the magic that existed in this world, good and bad, they needed to be ready for anything. And how could they be ready for anything if they could barely function without some sort of weapon, just in case?
Angela turned her attention back to the security footage, shaking her head at her mother's folly. Surely she should have known to watch her wording, when it came to asking things of the Fae; they were famous for twisting things around to suit their own ends.
She couldn't help but laugh at the man-eating parasol, though she was certain it hadn't been funny at the time, but it certainly was entertaining now.
"I think I should probably be the one to approach Goliath about this idea," she suggested, tail flicking slightly uneasily. "I don't think he quite trusts you," Angela added, almost apologetically. She'd heard the stories, but why shouldn't they try trusting each other, now? The Clan had fought Oberon on Xanatos' behalf, and Xanatos was allowing them to stay, safe in their ancestral home.

"He is very protective. Maybe he'll warm up to the idea of you being able to defend yourself better. Who knows?"
This went over pretty well so far. Maybe she could convince the others to try their own activities rather than spend the nights patrolling new york relentlessly, give Davids more shady activities a little breathing room. Plus any teachers or instructors working with the clan would be a good public relations boost when people see how much they have in common. David Xanatos, building alliances between worlds, humanitarian of the year perhaps? David finished up the last parts of the forms that he needed to fill in. The last part was a signature of the potential student. He slid the paper over and handed Angela a pen, indicating the dotted line.
"Just put a little something down there. It's unfortunatly the one part I can't do for you legally. In the business world we just have that part to show everything is done by our own free will."
His smile dropped slightly when Angela mentioned her father. Goliath would be the one to look for a hidden agenda in anything David offered the clan. For most people the position of best man at a wedding would be enough to put aside any past problems. It would require a lot of suspicion to find fault with a few fencing lessons though, not like she was taking up semi automatic pulse rifle training like her mother, black magic or replacing the Pack on a company funded tv show.
"We have a troubled history. He may still be a little sore over a few past escapades. Same with Detective Maza. I guess I'll have to keep trying."
Angela took the pen that Xanatos offered her and signed her name, just "Angela," since the Gargoyles didn't have surnames. Technically, they hadn't even really had names until Princess Katherine had chosen to name the eggs...and the Manhattan Clan had taken their own names when they had awoken in this strange, new place.
The young Gargoyle didn't often think about that sort of thing, but when she did, it struck her how extremely lucky she was to have been hatched on Avalon, raised by Princess Katharine. The Gargoyle way seemed ... much stranger to her than the way that humans did things. She still had a lot to learn.
At Xanatos's words, Angela flashed him what she hoped was a reassuring smile and handed his pen back to him.
"Well, at least you are trying," she said. "That has to count for something, doesn't it?" She thought that it did, anyway. Angela hadn't been around when Xanatos had continually betrayed the clan; she was much more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt than the rest of them were. But if she could convince the rest of the clan to at least give him a chance, perhaps their living situation could become that much more amiable.
