Persephone smiled sadly when Goliath noted the breadth and number of her family. She was not omnipotent, as many believed deities were; at least, the Olympian pantheon wasn't that way. She could not attest to the immortals of other cultures. Yet Persephone wasn't altogether blind, either. The goddess tended to be very astute when it came to affairs of the heart. Goliath spoke with a heavy spirit those words, and his eyes became deep wells of memory fraught with a pain that would never fade as he did so. Persephone, meanwhile, was thinking of how her family was not the same sort as Goliath was likely remembering. There was a word, in fact, that more modernized isles within Rohandor had come up with - a term, or designation - that Persephone thought suited them rather well. "Dysfunctional."
Truly they were much better off than most of the old tales told. Zeus, for all Persephone knew, was not the cruel and faithless man that much of the Grecian folklore made him out to be. In fact, his marriage to Hera was nothing but blissful to the spring goddess' eyes. Still, Persephone thought that the Olympians could be much better than they were. Specifically in their treatment of her husband. She knew that a fair deal of his behavior could not be blamed on the other gods' attitude toward him. Hades had earned a pretty piece of the enmity directed toward him by himself. Persephone just could not fathom why Hades' mistakes were so despicable and unforgivable in comparison to the errs of the other Olympians.
Dysfunctional. Complicated. Either or both worked. Persephone felt that her divine family tree was in so many tangles that even Arachne would not be able to untangle them given an age. She kept her silence though. Speaking ill of her family, or even bringing them up in that situation, when Goliath was evidently in the clutch of some bittersweet reverie would not do at all. Persephone remained silent for a moment after the gargoyle's next question. It was a simple one, by all rights, but the goddess felt uncomfortable in that she did not have an answer ready. Shouldn't she have formulated a concrete one by then?
"Well... Yes," she decided to begin. "Though, it's really my Lord that I worry for when I'm above. He tends to get into mischief when I'm away. Going back to old, bad habits in his loneliness." Persephone spoke mournfully. Her heart ached when she was away from Hades truly enough, but more than her own longing, when she was on Olympus during spring and summer she was ever and always fretting over what the god was up to. "I cannot judge him too harshly. When he was... away," she said carefully, avoiding mentioning Hades' time spent locked in the Sleep of Ages, "I was the only one who could properly manage the affairs of the Underworld. I got a taste of what lot my husband was given at the dawn of creation."
Persephone was looking down in grief. Now she turned her head up and forwards and pressed on, a woeful phantom, deathly pale and kindling the twilight to opaque whispers as she moved. "I did not care for it." The Lady did not let the silence linger afterwards. She didn't like talking about herself just then. What Goliath had accidentally brought up left her feeling dispirited and deeply perplexed; unsure of which way to turn. "But what of you, night-rider?" she asked, slowly regaining vitality and color as the topic slid away from herself. "One with a wounded heart recognizes another.
"We have a while yet to walk," she smiled gently. "Tell me more of this Elisa. She must be truly admirable to hold such a special place in your noble heart."

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"

Goliath simply smiled at Persephone's words; when he'd set out for this Isle, he'd heard stories of her husband Hades, but he'd chosen to put no stock into them. He didn't want to judge the Lord of the Underworld before he met him, after all; many people did that with the Gargoyles and they couldn't have been more wrong about them.
But he'd come here to seek out Hades' help, potentially, or at least his thoughts and options on the matter; he would have been a poor petitioner if he'd come with a request only to look down upon the person he expected to help him.
Before he could really say anything more on the matter, Persephone had changed the subject, back to Elisa. Which was a sure way to get Goliath talking, taciturn being though he was.
"Elisa....is a remarkable person," he said, his voice a soft rumple of thunder, the tenderness in it unmistakable. "She is one of the first humans I met when we awoke from our century-long sleep, and she helped me to realize that not all humans are ... bent on our destruction, the way that Demona would have had me believe."
At the mention of his former mate, Goliath grew grim. Demona had tricked and betrayed him, more than once, but at that point in time, he'd been so ready to believe her, so ready to accept her story, that she hadn't changed at all from the days when they'd protected Castle Wyvern.
In reality, she'd changed so much as to be almost unrecognizable. Elisa....had helped him to hope again. It had taken him (and Hudson) a bit longer to adapt to the new century than the others, but Elisa had helped with that. She had the same sort of mentality about protecting the people that he did, and she had helped him to see that leaving Castle Wyvern was the best thing for the clan. Manhattan became his protectorate, and he had found new purpose in life.

Goliath seemed slightly apprehensive to speak on the matter of the woman who was the reason for his being there. As though he had to formulate his response very carefully, or was warily testing the strength of his tongue to ensure that it did not fall into monologue about her. Persephone felt the hum of his deep voice through her immortal bones, and the sheer tenderness that lurked beneath the rolling thunder of his tone brought a blissful half-smile to her lips. Persephone closed her eyes and drank in the perfect way that Goliath regarded this Elisa. His obvious adoration for this woman filled the goddess with gladness. It heartened her and inspired her all in the same moment.
The gargoyle continued to speak, and some of what he said Persephone did not understand rightly. She was shrewd enough to formulate theories on these unknown portions, though. Goliath's voice turned a shade darker and more grave when he spoke of "Demona". There was bitterness and the hint of heartbreak in his eyes. The spell of contentedness that Goliath had inspired in Persephone a moment removed turned troubled and pensive. The night-rider obviously had many things weighing on his mind. She could see that much plainly. Persephone also did not think that just her insightful knack - correct though it almost always was - would not be enough to understand his circumstances alone.
They did not have the time for Goliath to explain them entirely, either, and Persephone had a suspicion that he would not like to share all regardless. She was little more than a stranger. Even if Goliath had decided his instincts weren't set against Persephone, common sense would likely keep him from giving away too much detail. Besides. Their journey together was coming to an end.
Quite suddenly the stone trees of her orchard drew away like curtains. They were come upon a small oval clearing. The cavern ceiling surged upwards to an unimaginable height, lost in darkness above. Flecks of gold shimmered and faded whimsically in the violet miasma, and the grove pressed up against a cave wall up ahead. Where the wall met the open chasm above, a waterfall fell in a gentle curtain. Looking into the veil of liquid, one could see half-formed visions of their memories, and the sound of it hitting the rocks and filling a pool in the clearing formed themselves in partially remembered voices of the listener's past. From the pool, the water spilled over and set off in a small creek between two trees and deeper into the gloom of Persephone's domain.
"This is the River Lethe," Persephone said softly. She had come to a stop just inside the clearing. "Drink not of its spring and bathe not in its pool, for the Lethe washes away all memory."
Persephone turned now to Goliath and her eyes were grave. "Before we part ways, I have some advice I would give you, if you will allow."

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"

The Gargoyle followed the goddess of springtime and rebirth through the gloom of the Underworld, gloom that receded somewhat as the Lady walked through it. She truly was a formidable creature (or could be), should the very shadows prostrate themselves at her passing, making the air around her lighter by her mere presence.
Though there was no sun of which to speak, in this place, Goliath had been encased in the stone sleep enough times to know that dawn was drawing near. And before it came, he needed to find a safe place to roost, somewhere that was not the Land of the Dead. Persephone might enjoy his company, but he did not relish spending the day in the Underworld. There was simply too much that could go wrong.
As they approached a clearing, with a waterfall beyond it, Goliath glanced at the water. It showed him half-visions of his past, as though he were only half-remembering things: young Demona sharing the Phoenix Gate with him, insisting that all of the Gargoyles leave the castle to look for the Vikings, his first meeting with Elisa, and on it went. Flashes of a life spent protecting others, putting others before himself. And what had it earned him? A life spent alone.
Goliath inclined his head in acknowledgement of Persephone's words; he had no desire to either drink or bathe in the waters. All he wanted was to be able to spend his nights at Elisa's side, in whatever form that might be.
Persephone would not allow him to leave without a few parting words, it appeared. Inclining his head once more, Goliath responded to her query. "Please, speak, Lady. I will do what I can to take your advice to heart." Though, should it run contrary to his nature, he would find it much more difficult to obey.

Goliath was quick to ascent to Persephone's wishes for a parting word. Once again the goddess was uncertain what drove the acquiescence; genuine curiosity or unwavering politeness. Perhaps both. Persephone gently scrutinized his features for a moment, then smiled thoughtfully and sighed. "I love my husband beyond words, Goliath but..."
Persephone paused, appearing to decide how to phrase her council. "He is not known for his empathy, or charity. Hades is not evil, no matter what others might say. But he has spent milennia striving against cruel circumstance and treacherous odds set against him. He does not strike a bargain unless he will come out the more profitable." The goddess struggled against the guilt that pricked at her chest. She refused to feel that she was betraying Hades in these words given to Goliath.
All that she had said was true, and she knew that the burden of withholding her advice from Goliath would be greater than forewarning him of Hades' tendencies. Still, Persephone felt that even in such a short while she had grown to know the gargoyle beside her better, maybe, than he supposed. She had a suspicion that, even if he knew the penalty outweighed the result, Goliath may agree to Hades' offer. Love had a way of making self-sacrifice a simple matter.
"I know that you care deeply for Elisa, Goliath." Persephone reached up and brushed the back of her fingers against his strong jaw. Her brows knit in a careful frown. "But sometimes the price is not worth the reward. The simplest solution is rarely the right one, when it comes to the heart. Even if the idea of waiting seems impossible to bear." Persephone drew away from Goliath then. She turned away from him and knelt to pluck a violet flower from the floor of her grove. With a smile she offered the blossom to the gargoyle.
"A gift. To this woman who has your heart." With that, Persephone gestured to the waterfall up ahead. From the ground on the edge of the pool, vines extended, bright green and remarkable in their stark contrast with the gloom around them. They wound in a narrow bridge and as they reached the curtain of the Lethe, the waters drew away on either side by some unseen force. The way was clear, and when Goliath turned back to the Lady, she would be gone. Nothing there to mark her passing save the flower she had imparted to the hero.
