"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jan 12, 2014 2:24:55 GMT -5
Goliath knew that he couldn't go to Puck with his request; Elisa had been right when she'd pointed out the limitations that Oberon had set on the trickster's magic. Which meant that the Gargoyle was going to have to find another way to .... deal with this issue.
Truth be told, he still didn't know what he was going to do. If he'd been able to at least discuss the problem with Puck, things would be easier. He didn't feel right, though, discussing magicks with someone who could no longer do them unless he was teaching little Alex.
And he didn't want to bring up the issue with the rest of the clan; it was something that he and Elisa needed to deal with. The rest of the clan, even Angela, didn't need to know what was going on.
As far as they were concerned, everything was normal between their leader and the New York City detective. Until a decision was made that changed things, there was no reason for them to think otherwise.
But he needed to consider options. He loved Elisa too much to give her up without some sort of fight, even if it was only an internal one.
With the many isles of Rohandor, Goliath knew that there had to be someone with the power to help him with his dilemma.
Which was why he was here, on the outskirts of the Underworld, on the Isle of Ambrosia.
He wasn't certain what he was going to do, yet, but he needed to know if this Hades could help him. Goliath had heard that he liked to make deals, so he had to check things out.

"You can't go in that way."
The voice was young, and gentle, but with an odd, almost juvenile tinge of defiance to its edges. Behind the gargoyle that surveyed the entrance proper to the realm of the dead, a petite figure stood, seemingly having solidified from the noxious air itself. The young woman was ethereal. Beautiful, but in an eerie, otherworldly way. Blonde hair drifted gently around her shoulders, as though she were submerged in water. Blue eyes stared, half-curious, half-wary at the back of the powerful creature that had slunk down into the depths.
Outfitted in a simple gown of white, the woman shone like a pale reflection of the moon, accentuated by the purest white shade of her skin.
"Unless you have a drachma to give Charon, the ferryman, or are willing to face the might of Cerberus."
She stood with feet wide and firmly planted in stubbornness. The strange specter appeared no more than fifteen years old, but there was a strangeness to her eyes. They were wells of unfathomable depth that were at odds with the otherwise youth of her appearance. "You're not of the Isle. The trip will be even harder for you because of it," she said in a high, matter-of-fact way. She placed both hands on her hips, and with a jerk of her chin forced her weightless, shoulder-length hair to curl over her shoulder and out of her way.
"Why do you even want to go down there, anyway?" she asked, eyes narrow in wariness. The girl turned her chin up high and added; "You could die, you know. That's sort of what this place is all about."
(OOC: Hopefully this route will be neat to tread. Persephone posing as a fifteen year-old. I have an idea, btw! Once she's a little more convinced by Goliath, Persephone's going to grudgingly lead him through her Grove to get safely into the Underworld. I figure it'll be in the Grove that the most substantial exchanges can be had.)

Goliath was studying the entrance, trying to find the best way to go about this whole endeavor when there was suddenly a voice.
He turned in the direction from which the voice had come, a frown on his chiseled features. Goliath could have sworn that there hadn't been anyone there a moment ago. In fact, it was almost as if the young woman .... had formed from the vapors of the Underworld itself.
With all that he'd seen and experienced on his journey home from Avalon, Goliath wasn't about to discredit that theory. Not yet, anyway.
"And how do you know of such matters?" he asked, his voice a rumble of quiet thunder above the noises of the Underworld. "I have fought many creatures before; a three-headed dog does not seem difficult." Of course, Cerberus was a bit more than just a three-headed dog, but Goliath wasn't particularly worried about the obstacles he might face.
At this point, he wasn't really thinking of himself. Not alone, anyway. His thoughts were of Elisa, as they had been for quite some time, now. About Elisa, and how he could make her happy.
The young woman continued to explain why it wouldn't be in Goliath's best interest to venture into the Underworld, all things that Goliath had considered, dismissing the risk to himself.
And then she asked why he wanted to even attempt the journey in the first place.
Goliath looked seriously at the young woman, eyes narrowed slightly in the moonlight.
"I need to at least speak with Hades. I have heard that he is willing to make deals, sometimes even transformative deals, and there is something I need to discuss with him."
He thought of Elisa again, and a small, unguarded smile slipped onto his face, try as he might to remain serious. This enterprise was a solemn one, but it was also partly for Elisa. There was no way he could complete this quest without thinking about her.

"I'm not stupid," the young girl said coolly. "I know things. You would too, if you'd taken the time to figure them out before coming down here."
There was still an element of mystery to the Greek pantheon, even among the denizens of the Isle of Ambrosia. Details were fudged, lost their true meaning through word of mouth, transformed from fact to hearsay to rumor to legend to myth. Even as fresh as the occurrences were to the Isle. If you didn't have one of the Olympians trying to jumble the specifics to make them look better, you had some drunken satyr rewrite a story to suit his addled attitude.
The fact of the matter was that, even though things were far from common knowledge among the Isle of Ambrosia's inhabitants pertaining to their gods and goddesses, there were ways to find the truth. Had this winged man thought to seek out Hercules, perhaps, or even commune at a temple of one of the gods that dotted the Isle's countryside and cities. He hadn't, though. Or, maybe he had and simply didn't care to heed the lessons that stories involving the Underworld gave.
Or, he was only heeding the hopeful possibilities that those stories revolved around, not the usually tragic ends that were recorded.
When the newcomer mused that handling Cerberus wouldn't be "difficult", the maiden raised both eyebrows and gave an unimpressed, dry look that was far beyond her years. "Yeah," she said bluntly, "that's what most people say... Right before they're dog food." When prompted to explain himself, the creature's demeanor turned from contemplative to grave and resolute. The maiden's own expression warped in regard to it, from dry and condescending to cautiously inquisitive.
By the time the gargoyle finished, the maiden was smiling crookedly. "The King is a clever trader. Most people who try to bargain with him come out on the shorter end of the laurel." Even so, it was apparent that the young girl was much less dismissive of the stranger now that he had vaguely eluded to his reason for being there. There was a firmness to his resolve that only love could found. She waited for a minute, pursing her lips in thought and eyeing the stranger critically up and down.
Finally, the girl exhaled sharply through her nose, folded her arms and tapped her foot. "You're sure you wanna go through with this? Even though you'd be a dummy to try?" she asked.

"Had you any idea of the creatures I've faced, maiden, you would not be so quick to dismiss me," Goliath said with a slight frown. Opinions of those outside his clan were not usually important to Goliath, but it seemed ... imperative that this strange young woman think well of him. Almost as though this mission of his could depend upon her.
Even as she spoke, Goliath turned his attention back to the entrance to the Underworld, continuing to listen to the young woman.
Perhaps, though, she'd appeared ... to help him. Or if not to help him, to warn him of the dangers he might face, should he choose to ... go through with this.
In his own mind, he didn't have another choice. Goliath was going to complete this quest, and he would come out alive. There was no other option. When he put his mind to it, Goliath could be a remarkably stubborn creature.
The girl warned him about this Hades fellow, that he was a slippery deal-maker, something about which Goliath already knew.
"I will manage," he told the girl, holding himself proud and tall. He might not have a Xanatos-level intellect, but Goliath was by no means stupid. The Gargoyle could hold his own.
Turning back to face the girl again, Goliath looked down at her, expression somewhere between deadly serious and the look he got when he was thinking about Elisa. Because both were true.
"If you knew the true reason for my presence here, you would not need to question me," he said in a rumble, the seriousness slipping away for a moment. If he managed to go through with this, if he managed to elicit the same sort of deal that Demona had....he and Elisa could be together. At long last.

There was something about this large, winged creature. Something that reminded her of someone very dear to her heart. The gargoyle's words were more lasting, and resonating in their deep, bass timbre. Definitely in contrast to the motor-mouthed monarch that was in her mind. Yet, there was something more subtle there that she noticed. Especially how the gargoyle's resolve toward this foolish quest came across. She knew the stubbornness that love inspired.
The more mature entity lurking in this young girl's image was satisfied. Outwardly, the appearance of the maiden was nothing but the furrowed scrutiny that had been there since materializing.
Several long moments of deliberating silence reigned after the gargoyle spoke. At last, the girl smiled crookedly, and dropped her arms to her sides. "Well, you can tell me the reason," she said simply, with a tiny shrug. She turned on her heel and strolled several steps toward the cavern wall behind her, then paused and looked over her shoulder. "But let's talk and walk. The longer you lounge about here, the bigger the chance is that something nasty'll notice you. You're lucky I was the first, and not something less adorable."
The maiden continued to the jagged, obsidian wall eclipsed in shadow. Two feet away from the unforgiving surface, and the girl didn't appear to have any inclination to slow down, or stop. In fact, she walked right through it. Afterwards, there was a strange distortion that warped the wall seemingly between blinks, revealing afterwards a narrow niche between the rivets of stone. The blond head of the girl poked around the bend in the unlikely entrance, looking impatiently toward the gargoyle.

Goliath listened to the girl speak, wondering who she reminded him of. She was quite confident in how ... "adorable" she was, as she put it, certain that she knew better than he did. Considering where they were and the fact that she'd seemed to appear out of thin air, he wouldn't be surprised if she did know more than he, at least about this place.
The large Gargoyle heaved a sigh at the girl's urging to hurry.
"Very well," he said, making his way towards the ... distortion of reality, it seemed to be. Upon first glance, it was simply a wall of rock, but after the girl had walked through it, the view changed, depending upon how one looked at it.
Taking a deep breath, Goliath walked through the wall, following behind the girl.
"If you insist upon knowing, I am here to discuss a deal with Hades, a deal that would make me human during the day," Goliath rumbled, still trying to figure out what the ramifications of such an action would be. "The woman I love .... is human. And we will never be able to be together unless one of us makes a sacrifice. I would give anything, for her," the Gargoyle said, his voice softening as he spoke of Elisa.
She was his weakness and his strength, his love and his heartache, and he was willing to give his life for her, should it be needed.
"I know that this ... Hades can be tricky, which is why I am seeking information only, at this point in time."
"Being human is overrated, if you ask me," the girl said breezily over her shoulder, ignoring the fact that he hadn't asked for her opinion on the matter. Few did, but everyone always got to hear it.
To her, this creature - this gargoyle - that was trailing along behind her was magnificent. Having seen her fair share of monstrosities, and warped offspring of nature (usually due to an Olympian's wrath or infidelity), she could not believe that he wanted to give that up for humanity. Even just for half of the time. Then the gargoyle went on to explain why he wanted what he did, and the maiden leading him deeper in to this unknown sector of the Underworld became less obstinate and more pensive.
Sacrifice in the name of love. That was something that she could understand. Though, really, with love being the prize to be earned, it hardly ever felt like a sacrifice.
The path that the two were treading was labyrinthine, in a way. What started as a serpentine path through juts of stone was steadily gaining more proper shape. Now the onyx and obsidian pillars reached their arms up, and out, shaped like saplings with their bows stretched and woven to support the ceiling. Small paths shot off from the main, and when you looked down them one couldn't decide if it were a tunnel, or a forgotten trail through a distorted, mystical wood.
Lavender petals with a lullaby scent started to drift down, carpeting the cold stone floor without any explanation as to where they came from.
With every passing moment, whether it was noted or not by the gargoyle, his guide was aging. While he spoke, and confessed the truth for his being there, as well as his awareness how dangerous a gambit the whole ordeal was, she stayed quiet, listening. Finally, when he finished speaking, the two emerged from the small byway they'd been navigating into a cavernous chamber. Here the stone-crafted trees were so beautifully carved that they were more stunning than any living one might be.
They rose in might, sinuous pillars and sprouted canopies laden with leaves of raw gold and silver, with blossoms of diamond. Subtly etched into the bows, or outer walls were shapes that appeared as woodland creatures, remarkably lifelike in the peripheral of ones vision. The grove stretched on, caught in a twilight that made it appear that much more ethereal. And now, a full-grown woman, the entity leading the gargoyle turned to look at him with a gentle, wise gaze.
"You must love this woman dearly," she said softly. Her skin was now a watered-down pink hue, and her little white dress had blossomed into a full Grecian gown. She continued walking, but now instead of an amble, it was a serene and stately tread.
(OOC: I figure Goliath has divined that Persephone's not a threat, since he trusts his own judgement. Otherwise, creepy girl-turning-into-adult leading you into a maze would be pretty foolhardy - haha)

Goliath practically laughed out loud at the young woman's assertion that being human was overrated. While the large Gargoyle didn't have the contempt for humans that Demona did, he had been human briefly, and he had vastly preferred being a Gargoyle.
But for Elisa, to truly be with her.....he was willing to do anything. Even be a human.
At the same time, though, he would only be human part of the time, should he get what he wanted. Even that was more humanity that he would have truly wanted, but it didn't matter. It was for Elisa.
He followed the young woman through a labyrinth of paths. Goliath knew that he would never be able to remember his way through this place; he hoped the young woman would lead him back out again. If not, he wasn't sure how he'd manage to find his way out of this place.
The Gargoyle looked around the place the young woman had led him to, in awe of it. It reminded him of Avalon, but ... darker, if that was the right word.
It was a moment before he realized that the woman (now fully grown. If he hadn't known before that she was ... unusual, he certainly would now) had spoken to him again.
"Elisa is ... my everything," he said softly. "There is nothing I would not do for her, even if that means sacrificing my days." He would no longer have the stone sleep, so he didn't know what would happen, say, if he got sick, but they would cross that hurdle when it happened.
Looking around again, Goliath asked, his voice still soft, "What is this place?"

The goddess had been testing Goliath, though he would likely never know it. For this particular deity, that test was concealed cleverly (kindly) in the course of their pleasant conversation. Other gods or goddesses would erect harrowing gauntlets or tragic challenges before heroes to test their mettle. The being that lead Goliath through twisted, living rock was of a different opinion. She... Was very impressed by this gargoyle. Impressed, and humbled, and even growing to be rather fond of him. She knew he was noble in demeanor from first laying eyes upon him, but now he proved to be so throughout.
When Goliath admitted that he would sacrifice all for this Elisa woman, the goddess that drifted slightly ahead of him smiled; small and thoughtful, in a way that touched her eyes and made them shimmer with admiration and respect. The question that came next was an obvious one, and the goddess was surprised that it had not come up before then. Goliath trusted her, or he trusted himself to be able to handle whatever pitfall may open before him. Either or, his love-driven quest was, perhaps, one of the deity's favorite stories - and she had watched all the myths of Greek lived out.
"These," she said, gesturing a willowy limb to encompass the scene, "are the Meadows of Persephone."
The young woman turned her head slightly to look at Goliath over her shoulder, a cunning that was not unkind glimpsed in her eyes. "They are used by the Lady to usher the souls that have earned their place in the Fields of Elysium. A sacred entrance to the Underworld without peril..." The woman took pause for a moment, reflected, then added, "Unless you happen upon the Lady with no right to be here."
(Note: I'm embellishing a little here, I know, but the Disney Underworld doesn't exactly behave like the one from actual myth, so I'm trying to make it compatible.)

Goliath looked around, a considering expression on his face. Though he wasn't nearly as versed in Greek mythology as he was in Scottish (he was technically a part of Scottish mythology, after all), he knew some things. And others, he could infer.
From the way this woman was behaving and the way she was speaking of the "Meadows of Persephone," he was willing to hazard a guess that she was the Lady Persephone herself.
Which meant that he was in the presence of a goddess.
"My Lady," Goliath said reverently, sinking to one knee. "Forgive me; I did not realize....," he trailed off.
If he had realized who she was from the beginning, he would have been more polite. Not only that, he wouldn't have been as ... well, as brusque as he had been, in the beginning of their encounter.
But she had brought him into the Underworld through her own path, to avoid the perils he might otherwise have had to face.....; that had to mean something...didn't it? Perhaps he'd managed to ... impress her somehow? Or perhaps she was displeased with him and would shortly be showing him that.
At this point, he could only wait. Wait and see what she chose to do.
Persephone was a deity, but she was not an oracle. She could not see into the future. As it was, Persephone did not know whether or not the gargoyle, Goliath, that she now lead through her fields would discern her true identity. There was enough to point to the truth, and yet not enough to put any shadow of doubt aside. Goliath stopped in his tread suddenly, and sank into a ceremonial kneeling position. Persephone gave him a considering look as she, too, paused, and turned on the spot to face him.
She did not know if Goliath was simply being polite, or was actually in awe of her. Certainly the former made her less uncomfortable. Persephone clasped her hands before her. Her blond eyebrows knit together carefully. "Please stand up," she asked. Persephone bent slightly, and gently took Goliath's chin in her hands to turn his head upward, trying to draw him entirely with the gesture, into a standing position. Once that was done, Persephone drew away from her companion and looked at him, using her best attempt at a nonchalant smile, while looking slightly uncertain.
Really, Persephone wasn't overtly used to being worshiped. Or even treated reverently. Her interaction with mortals had been considerably less than any of her relatives. Growing up, Persephone was kept in the company of other deities, or nature spirits for the most part. Then she became the Queen of the Underworld and... Well... There wasn't a large tourist market for her husband's realm. There had been one or two heroes that came down into the land of the dead for one reason or another, but they had been more fearful (of Hades, specifically) than worshipful.
To that end, Goliath's current display was unnerving. "I will admit, most of my family - and my husband - would be put in a pleasant mood by that kind of behavior... But they - and I - don't deserve it. Not in my opinion, at least." Persephone gave a contemplative, lopsided frown. Admitting that the Olympians demanded reverence they did not deserve was a hefty assertion. Persephone did not like saying it, but once she had, she didn't disagree with herself. "No, what I would really like right now is a friendly face to walk and talk with. Those aren't very common down here. And you've been delivering so far."

Yes, Goliath was being polite when he sank to his knees, but there was a bit of awe behind the motion, as well. He was in the presence of a deity, and one that could create things like trees simply by walking; she was immensely powerful, and he respected that power. He was a simple Gargoyle; he couldn't create anything, especially not by walking.
But he stood as she bid him, understanding how such an action could make her uncomfortable. Yes, from what he'd heard, most of the Greek gods and goddesses would be more than happy to accept such reverence, but Persephone seemed .... more down-to-earth than most of the other deities he'd read about. Either way, he would respect her wishes.
Re-caping his wings around him, Goliath's chiseled face formed a smile at her request, and he nodded.
"Why do you not venture out more, if you feel the need for companionship?" Goliath asked, once more falling into step with the young woman he now knew to be a goddess. Even if he didn't bow to her again, he was going to make sure to hold his temper, should anything arise to disturb it. He knew he had a temper, and he couldn't always keep it in check. Right now, he had to make absolutely certain that he did.
After all, he'd come here to explore any options he might have for really being with Elisa. She was human, he was a Gargoyle, and it was a huge issue between the two of them, ever since she'd kissed him that day.
Though they hadn't wanted things to change, they had, and now they had to find a way to work around that. If there was a way to do so. It was going to be hard, if they decided to basically stay as they were. But it would be even harder if Elisa decided that she needed to move on.
Post by Persephone on May 13, 2014 11:32:42 GMT -5
The Lady Persephone was grateful that Goliath complied without issue to her request. Granted, the obedience could have been seen as another sign of the gargoyle's possible reverence or etiquette. Based on what Persephone had gleaned of her companion, she liked to think that it was the latter; which also aided in her feeling more at ease. Goliath's noble demeanor was genuine, of that the goddess was certain, and she was very glad that it was. Such qualities were almost nonexistent in the realm of the Underworld. Once souls reached Elysium they might regain those attributes, but generally up until that point they were... Difficult house-guests. Persephone hardly blamed them; the Underworld had very few areas that were promising, its main thoroughfare down the River Styx not among them.
Persephone tended to meet the more impressive spirits, because she ushered them safely through her fields to a blessed afterlife. When you had toiled and suffered through several lives' worth of virtuousness, you deserved a sheltered passing to your ultimate destination. From heroes to oracles to average, everyday common folk, all who had purchased their spot in the blessed realm with much hardship, and perseverance of heart. This was the first time that a living creature had passed through Persephone's twilit glades, and she was both very amused, and exceedingly glad at the idea. Goliath appeared to be more than worthy of access to this, the most sacred route in the Underworld.
The gargoyle wrapped his wings over his chest again, and Persephone felt that that was indication enough of his willingness to proceed. She turned again and began drifting forward at a contemplative, gliding pace. Where her feet touched the polished earthen floor, flowers sprang up now. They lingered for several long moments after Persephone's footfall left them before appearing to petrify, then condense into living shadow and fade. The goddess tilted her head as she went, listening to Goliath's question. The timber of his voice resonated through her immortal bones in a way that reminded her of her cousin, Hephaestus' own tone; worthwhile and born from patience as strong as the roots of mountain, but also capable of wrath as wretched as a volcanic eruption.
Persephone smiled absently after the question was asked. "Well," she said in a considering way, "when it's the time of year that finds me in the Underworld, I can't leave. I don't want to, either. This is my domain," she gestured with one willowy arm at the living stone trees and the air filled with dreamlike miasma. "My protectorate. Besides, while I'm in the Underworld I don't want for companionship, other than my husband's. I'm content with him. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate kindly company when I have it." Persephone glanced over her shoulder for a moment with a gentle smirk on her lips. "Then," she sighed as she went on, "when I'm on Olympus I can hardly get a moment to myself."
She sounded forlorn and far from whining. It was the truth. After her duration with her husband in the realm of the dead, Persephone's homecoming to Olympus was one of the largest celebrations of the year. Deities, gods, goddesses, spirits, personifications and mythical creatures would constantly want to see her. Her friends and family felt the need to have her company whenever they could manage. Then there was that whole "bringing spring" business of hers that Persephone had to manage when she first arose. Pretty as it was, the changing of seasons was hard work. And all the while, as Persephone sat on Olympus, her thoughts were downward cast, ever bent on her husband, and what mischief he was up to in her absence; like a child who, ignored, is left to its own devices to gain attention.

Post by Goliath on May 30, 2014 5:19:41 GMT -5
The large Gargoyle matched his pace to the goddess at his side, slowing his strides so that they were truly walking together through this glade that seemed made of perpetual twilight. It was a pleasant sort of gloom, the sort one feels before falling into a deep sleep or when one awakens in the middle of the night.
He watched as flowers sprang up beneath Persephone's feet, only to fade back into the shadows not long after she had passed. She must truly be a powerful being, a creature to be reckoned with, should she wish to be.
Truly, Goliath had not thought much on deities and mythologies beyond those he had met on his tour of the world in Avalon's skiff, trying desperately to get home to New York. He'd met his fair share of creatures thought only to exist in stories and legends, after all. Gargoyles, too, were considered as more stories than they were flesh and blood. Or they had been, rather. Now that the worlds knew of them, it was different.
A small, rather sad smile slipped onto Goliath's face as Persephone said that she didn't lack for companionship while she was in the Underworld, with her husband. And then, of course, when she was with her family, she couldn't get a moment to herself.
"You have a large family," he rumbled, something wistful in his tone. He'd once had a large clan, but they'd been massacred by the Vikings. The pain had lessened, but every once in a while (as now), a fresh pang of grief and guilt knifed its way through him. He had been the clan leader; he should have been able to protect them!
He shook his head to clear it; he shouldn't be thinking about things like that right now. All of that was in the past and he could do nothing to change it. What he could change was the possibility of a future with the woman he loved.
"It must be difficult, to be separated from your husband for much of the year," he said instead, thinking about what he would give to have the same sort of arrangement she had. Even six months with the one he loved would be better than watching her move through her life, ever unable to really touch her.

Professor Ratigan: 'Twas a good trip! I'm sad it's over, but at the same time I'm glad to be back home so I can finish up my cosplays for a con next month and hang out with my cats

Basil of Baker Street: Hope the cosplay goes well. I'm putting away a little extra for a con in a few weeks. and yay cats, they're always good company. Except for that one who slaps me unprovoked XD. So what cosplays do you have in mind unless they're secret?

Professor Ratigan: I only just started watching the anime last year and I haven't even touched the manga, so I'm barely hip with it lol. fortunately I have my cosplay buddy guiding me through the whole experience
