Character Name: Fox
Gender: Female
Type of Creature: Hybrid (human on her father's side, Child of Oberon on her mother's)
Rank: Neutral
Movie/TV Series: Gargoyles
Home Island: Isle of the Statue – New York Town
Personality: Fox is a calculating woman. Her nimble mind has been employed from a young age towards vast and many-layered plans and schemes to attain what she wants, or even simply as her own brand of mischievous fun. It takes a very precise individual with incredible patience and admirable foresight to manage what Fox has throughout her life. She can nudge the chess pieces of her plans hither and tither subtly, so that her true intentions are only made clear at the last, when everything is as she wishes it to be. Fox's shrewdness comes into play anywhere from simple things – interacting with another individual, saying just what they want to hear, in just the manner it needs to be said to best help her – to her grandest designs. This is specifically noteworthy in regards to Fox's hand-to-hand fighting style. Yes, she can do much more damage orchestrating things from afar, but when forced to test her mettle against another physically, Fox can scrutinize her opponent (physique, speed, fighting style, etc) and determine how best to go against them.
Fox's patient calculating allows her to accomplish things by crafting careful, astute plans, but it takes a very great deal of cunning for those to be of any merit. It is this trait, above all others, that inspired Fox to change her name to what it is. She is clever to the point of scariness with an agile, manipulative mind that is a match for the genius CEO that she calls her husband. Beyond day-to-day applications of her guile, or the grandeur of tactful strategies, Fox employs this facet of her personality against her adversaries to find chinks in their armor, or assets to her arsenal. Whether they be psychiatric (inflaming someone with a short temper to make them more reckless, as an example) or purely tangible (exploiting a weak guard to its fullest).
Fox is sure of who she is as a woman and refuses to adhere to anyone's standards but her own. She is confident in what she says and does and unapologetic about her behavior on top of that. Fox isn't rude, generally – in fact, she can be impressively charismatic as a rule and certainly when it suits her – but any crass or impolite act she makes, or words she says are done purposefully. There is very little that Fox does on a whim, or by accident, or on instinct. Even reactions that seem reflexive have a good deal more forethought and deliberation behind them than the average person. Fox's will is indomitable to the point of stubbornness and she will not back down from what she believes in, no matter what adversity stands before her.
Most wouldn't place the word “loyal” in Fox's favor. Those who know Fox well are wise enough not to trust her word or actions explicitly, because it's anyone's guess as to whether or not they're in the favor of a predetermined end. Fox is a loyal woman, though. She simply has very few in her life she feels deserving of that loyalty. David and Alexander, in fact, are probably the only two who make the list. And to her husband and child, Fox would give all, do anything and sacrifice herself in an instant, without a second thought to save either of them.
Fox's heart became hardened at an early age. Her parents were loving to her, perhaps, but they never truly seemed smitten with one another. Halcyon loved Anastasia, surely, but Fox could tell even so young that it wasn't quite entirely reciprocated. When the two divorced later in Fox's life, she was given a new and harsher outlook on love and relationships in general and consciously numbed her heart in light of that. Fox believed that true love was a fool's errand and a childish fantasy and the best she could possibly do was invest in a man who would be entertaining, at the least and stimulating at the most. Fox found that in David Xanatos and for a long while their relationship was recreational.
It took a very long time for Fox to acknowledge and then embrace that she loved David; and she only did that once she was convinced that her union with him would be everything that her parents' marriage failed to be. Fox was falling in love with David even while she denied it, so that the true gravity of her adoration for the man caught her quite off guard when she finally faced it. David breached Fox's icy heart, but her son is what truly thawed it. Fox would deny outright the theory, but it was a likely possibility that, had Alexander not been born, David and herself might have ended up just like Halcyon and Titania in a number of years. Bored and monotonous to one another.
Alexander has completely reformed their relationship, though. Given David and Fox a center, a foundation, a focus and ensuring that their love for one another and their son will never end in this life. It is love – sown by David, nurtured by their marriage and blossomed by Alexander – that has softened Fox in recent years. Once harsh and cold and imperious, she can now be gentle and warm to anyone, when those milder emotions were once reserved entirely for David. Her entire opinion of the Manhattan Clan changed when they fought Oberon on her and David's behalf, leaving her tolerant and even fond of them in the now. Alexander is a key to Fox's trust in that any who do not act well with her son do not receive kindness from her.
Powers, Skills, and/or Any Other Abilities:
Mrs Xanatos: Through David, Fox has virtually unlimited resources, specifically in the realms of technology. Money is of no consequence to Fox.
Scientific: Not on par with her parents, but still notable; Fox is capable of comprehending things of complex scientific, technological or mechanical nature.
Hand-to-Hand: Fox has trained since she was very young in marital arts, making her masterful in disciplines such as boxing, judo, street-fighting and karate and dabbled in a fair few others.
Manipulative: Fox's guile stands alone and many of her schemes rely on the ability to cunningly nudge pieces of the chess board here and there to suit her. Fox is very good at manipulating people, both directly and off stage.
Actress: Given that she was part of the television show “The Pack,” and needs to put on a persona for much of her manipulative aims, Fox is a talented actress.
Pilot: Fox is a competent, if not masterful pilot of all the vehicles that are used by Xanatos Enterprises, going so far as to be David's personal pilot several times in the past.
Gadgetry: Through her husband's company, Fox has access to a vast array of technologically advanced gadgetry, from concentrated hand-held lasers used to carve openings in metal, to the myriad offensive weapons that Xanatos Enterprises has under its umbrella. Fox is proficient in most all of these areas and employs items on a case-by-case basis as needed.
Magic: Fox has shown that, in times of greatest duress and hopelessness, she is able to tap into her magical capabilities and launch an all-out, one-shot offensive on an enemy. Fox's magic talents are very under-developed, meaning that she's fatigued and exhausted beyond moving after using them. She could, possibly, improve her abilities, but she has shown no inclination of desiring to. Her attack against Oberon had been thought to be impossible, which means that (were she so inclined) Fox would need intense focus and/or training to even scratch the surface.[/ul]
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Stubborn: The woman can be a bit mulish. It takes a great deal, to change Fox's more ingrained inclinations.
Untrustworthy: Fox has a checkered past and is known to do and say things that suit her in favor of honesty. Though she's reformed for the most part, Fox is still bound to inspire wariness and lack of trust from most everyone save David. She's okay with that, too.
Curiosity: Fox has an insatiable curiosity. During the events of the City of Stone, she was told explicitly by David not to watch the broadcast going out over all channels, but couldn't help herself from doing so despite his warnings, turning into a statue because of her need to know.
Daredevil: Fox may be a little more careful than she once was, but she is still very adventurous in her pursuits. Perhaps dangerously so. Fox wouldn't bat an eye at casting herself off of a helicarrier thousands of feet in the air with nothing but a glider between her and certain death. In fact, she'd relish it.
Moral Compass: Again, Fox is perhaps a bit more morally conscious now that she knows she has to present an example for Alexander, but she's still not very bothered with the law and if she were to bend or break it. Fox's lawlessness for the sake of play, or an interesting game could present a problem if she were pinned down for it. She's been arrested and incarcerated in the past.
Mortality: Despite all else, Fox is still a mortal woman with all of the frailties that that status entails. She is susceptible to injury, disease and death. No sum of money or cunning can change that.[/ul]
Canon History: Fox was born Janine Renard, daughter of esteemed scientist power couple Halcyon and Anastasia Renard. Janine grew up with all the comforts that her parents' considerable fortune could allot and though her mind was astute and nimble, Janine was not nearly as mesmerized by the sciences as her mother and father. As Janine grew it was no secret that she was possessed of remarkable cunning that lead to more than one scheme of hers completed throughout her childhood and adolescence.
With Halcyon's founding of Cyberbiotics, among other things, it was decided that Janine should begin to learn self-defense for her own personal safety if ever she were to be used as a bartering chip against Halcyon or Anastasia. Janine proved to be a natural and not only that, but took to the lessons with the same fervor that her parents reserved for their scientific pursuits. After mastering all that her self-defense teacher could offer, Janine insisted on broadening her horizons. So, from an early age and particularly during her adolescent years, Janine went from one sensei to another, learning various styles of hand-to-hand.
While Janine grew older, she seemed to align more with her mother's way of thinking instead of the rigidity that her father was known for. Halcyon believed in strict adherence to morality, integrity and responsibility. Janine, meanwhile, much preferred to test her cleverness by scheming and plotting in ways that were more often than not lawless. When she was twenty-five years old, Janine's parents divorced. That, along with the marital rifts and troubles that preceded that conclusive act, greatly affected Janine and influenced her opinion on love and relationships.
Aided by that event and finally too bored to feign compliance with her father's moral compass, Janine transformed herself. Janine Renard went up in flames and from the ashes arose Fox. She had her name legally changed to just that, as well as the now-iconic tattoo etched over her right eye. Fox played a little rough for Halcyon's tastes and openly meddled in his affairs just for the fun of it.
Fox met billionaire CEO David Xanatos. Here was someone who was her equal in terms of cunning and who promised to never bring a dull day to her. Fox was slow to admit it, but once she realized that her relationship to David was everything that her parents' marriage hadn't been (in her opinion), Fox accepted that she had fallen in love with the man. She continued to hone her skills both as a hand-to-hand combatant and a ruthlessly clever strategist so that, by the time David came up with the idea to create a formidable group he could control from off-stage, Fox was more than willing to be a part of the little skit.
Fox became the leader of the Pack, who to public knowledge were nothing more than super-heroic stars of their own television series of the same name, constantly doing battle with villainous ninja foes. When the Pack learned of the Gargoyles existence – secretly at David's behest, in a bid to test the Pack's capabilities – Fox lead her group in a campaign against them using force as much as trickery. Her efforts were in vain, however and Fox, along with Wolf were arrested and sent off to Rikers Island to serve their sentences.
Even from prison Fox continued to manipulate others in her and David's best interests and the two lovers stayed in contact all the while (helping to ensure Derek Maza came into David's services, among other things). Fox engineered an escape for the Pack from the prison, but when offered a chance at freedom from her former teammates, she refused, claiming that she wanted to serve out her sentence, even saving a guard from harm. The parole board of the prison viewed this kindly and granted her early parole because of it – Fox's ultimate goal all along and what prompted her to organize the breakout.
Fox moved into the Eyrie Building with David directly after Rikers and there they continued their relationship in earnest, not tied down by any machinations in the works that would get in the way. Soon after, the two became engaged, with Fox's engagement present from David being a necklace called the Eye of Odin. Unbeknownst to Fox, the amulet was transforming her into a werefox at night that ravaged New York until the sun rose. The Eye was also steadily sapping her life-force, ensuring her imminent death if were not removed. Through the combined effort of David and Goliath, Fox was saved and she and David married soon after.
During one of her playful attempts to destroy her father's empire of Cyberbiotics, Fox was foiled by Goliath. She took defeat well, helped partially by the fact that she realized she was with child. The pregnancy did not deter Fox from scheming. She simply had to focus on more subtle, far-reaching strategies since she could not risk herself in any endeavors. It was during this time that Fox and David enhanced the Pack to use as their own playthings against the Gargoyles, orchestrating them for their own amusement. During her pregnancy also was when Fox voyaged to Australia in order to launch the Matrix (a nanobot program that would allow Fox and David to reshape the world to their liking) with her mother, Anastasia as a scientific consultant. The Matrix backfired, but Fox and Anastasia were saved by the intervention of Dingo and Goliath.
The night of Fox's son's birth, Alexander, was fraught with peril. Shortly after having the child, it was revealed to Fox that her mother, Anastasia was not a mortal woman at all. She was Titania, Queen of Avalon and wife of King Oberon, thereby making Fox a halfling. Titania convinced Oberon to allow her to take Alexander to Avalon and teach him to hone his magic, not wanting him to become mundane as Fox had, being raised on earth. When David and Fox refused, a climactic battle unfolded wherein an unlikely alliance was formed between the Manhattan Clan and David.
The fight against Oberon reached its climax when he finally broke through the Eyrie Building's defenses and came upon Alexander. There was only one thing left between Oberon and the newborn: Fox. In the heat of the moment, possessed of a fierce protectiveness for Alexander fueled by a mother's love, Fox unleashed a powerful magical blast that stunned Oberon. It was decided that if she, who had been thought to have lost her magical aptitude, could reawaken those powers after they'd been dormant for so long, Alexander's potential could be nurtured... By Puck, the Child of Oberon that had been masquerading as Owen for so many years.
That night changed everyone involved. Fox's hardened heart, breached by David, was made more tender in the eyes of her son. Fox became a doting, attentive mother and all animosity she still harbored toward the gargoyles was rendered null and void, because they had helped in the protection of Alexander.
When the Police Clock Tower – home of the Manhattan Clan – was razed by the Hunters and David offered the Eyrie Building as a new homestead for the gargoyles, Fox had her doubts. If only because such an arrangement would likely bring danger upon Alexander in the future. When Fox saw how well the gargoyles were with her son (Lexington foremost), she changed her opinion, knowing that as the son of David Xanatos, Alexander would be in danger either way and at least with the gargoyles using the Eyrie Building as their roost, there were more present to defend him, were tragedy to strike.
Game Information: Since Gargoyles manifested in New York Town of Rohandor, Fox's existence has been fairly plain. Her primary focus is on motherhood and the raising and protecting of Alexander, but that hasn't stopped all of her fun. Fox has helped David gather his bearings in this new world and has a good number of schemes up her sleeve to exploit the realm of Rohandor for the betterment of her family, Xanatos Enterprises and... Well, her own enjoyment, really.
Anything Else:
Fox is well-read (She likes the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre, but considers Nietzsche too “butch” for her tastes and Kafka reminds her of the cockroaches that Hyena liked to shoot rubber bands at in their cell).
Fox did not take her husband's last name, though she does not mind being referred to as “Mr and Mrs Xanatos” or “David and Fox Xanatos” so long as she is with David.
Fox wears size nine shoes and is fond of manolos. (Section with help from Gargwiki)

“No, daddy, everything's fine here.” Fox leaned against the window of the study with the cordless phone against her ear. Outside New York Town rambled off to every horizon, seen in untarnished perfection from the Eyrie Building's elevation. “Alexander is fine, daddy,” she assured. The question and answer had Fox turn to look over her shoulder. On the carpet before the roaring hearth sat Puck cross-legged with Alexander on his lap. The babe's magic lesson for the day was in session and as Fox watched he blinked at the vision of Manhattan floating in the air that Puck had conjured. Alexander giggled and made a grabbing motion for it. The detailed image whirled, shrunk and was suddenly absolutely miniature, held between his pudgy hands.
Fox smirked. “He is definitely his father's son.” She was thinking aloud, really, but when her father responded to this assertion, the redhead chuckled. She turned back to look out of the window from before. The sun was setting over the city and the intermingling colors were a sight to behold. “There was a time, you know, when that comment would have made you cross-eyed with irritation. Now you're proud. How the tables have turned. And I thought old dogs were set in their ways.” Fox's joking aside, she knew the reason for her father's change of opinion about David. Mr and Mrs Xanatos had been acting fairly tame since their son's birth. Hearing Halcyon's satisfaction almost made Fox want to go out and manage a little mischief.
“Uh-huh,” Fox said. She leaned against the sill, checking her cuticles as she spoke. “No. Yes, lunch is still on for tomorrow. David's cleared his schedule for it, in fact.” The woman glanced at the last rays of the fading sun, pursing her lips in thought. “On the veranda of the atrium. Yes, I know how much you like it there.” While Fox continued her conversation, the sunlight continued to dwindle. Soon it would be well and truly set. “Of course, daddy. See you tomorrow.” Fox ended the call and turned away from the window. On the way to where Puck and Alexander were, she placed the phone on the corner of a table.
“Are we about done for today?” she asked evenly. Puck looked up and blinked – Alexander had turned his white hair pink. “I think that'll do for one session, yup yup.” Puck handed the babe up to Fox's waiting arms and spun on the spot. Colors whirled and a strange wind picked up for a moment, then Puck was replaced by Owen, standing imperiously as ever. “If you will excuse me, Miss Fox, I have duties to attend to.” Fox quirked a brow at Owen's retreating backside. It was still odd to her how he adopted the dual personality of whichever form her chose. Now that everyone knew the secret it was hardly necessary. Then again, Fox didn't think she could handle the grating presence of Puck at all hours of the day, so maybe it was a good thing.
Fox coddled Alexander while she turned and walked back to the window. As she reached the pain, night finally fell over Manhattan. “Listen carefully, my love,” she whispered to Alexander. The baby blinked, then tilted his head and remained silent. There came the slightest trembling in the walls of the study and then, with Fox smirking at the sound, a chorus of primal growls, somewhat like panthers and lions, but not quite. “Your friends are awake,” Fox said, offering her finger for Alexander to grab.
